Father Jean-Bertrand Aristide describes the reasons for his refusal to leave Haiti, after the Salesian order had him transferred and summoned him to Rome. Aristide describes his church as one that provides "preferential option for the poor." If he had stopped speaking out, he would have betrayed the poor. Aristide believes this is a plot against him on the part of powerful Macoutes, and accuses Leslie Manigat of being a Macoute. He gives a chronology of events from 1986-1988 that have led to this moment, and describes the divisions between the church authorities and the "ti legliz." Exclusive interview, received 19 October.
