Interview with Zhang Qiuyue

Zhang Qiuyue (b.1937) is a resident of Zhengge Village, Duqu County, Linying County, Luohe City, Henan Province. During the famine of 1942, Zhang was only old enough to start to remember things. Her father sold clothes and bought Chinese bean pancakes back. They cut the pancakes into pieces to eat them. They relied on Zhang’s uncle’s help to survive. Later, Zhang’s grandfather gave her some lands, and she ate food left by the Japanese people who lived there. When people ate at eating halls, Zhang cooked there and had enough food. She also brought buns to her mother from work. After people could work on their own, life became better. Zhang also recollects her family stealthily made baskets and went to sell them at night.

张秋月（1937年生）是河南省临颍县杜曲镇大孟村村民。 1942年饥荒的时候，老人刚记事，父亲出去卖衣服，买了豆饼回来砍了吃，靠舅舅家接济。后来老人的爷爷给了老人几亩地，吃日本人剩下的食物。吃食堂的时候，老人在食堂做饭，没有挨饿，给母亲带馍馍吃，单干以后生活才逐渐改善。老人还回忆了和家人在家里偷偷地编篮子，晚上背去卖。
