Xia Daini (b.1935) is a resident of Dameng Village, Luohe City, Henan Province. In the Spring of 1958, Xia was in confinement after giving birth to her daughter, and she was sick in bed because of hunger. Her grandmother ate some kinds of famine food. As a result, her stomach went wrong and she died in September. Xia remembers going out to solicit food after eating at the eating hall. With other companions, Xia walked lengths for food. Many still starved to death.
