Wu Dayu (b. 1924) is a resident of Liudian Village, Madian, Woyang, Anhui Province. Wu recollects that in 1960, some people collapsed on the road and died of hunger. If people worked slowly or stole food, they would get beaten up. For her kids, Wu once walked miles to digged for frozen sweet potatoes. Still, two of her children died of hunger.
吴大雨(1924年生)是安徽省涡阳县马店镇刘店村村民。吴老人回忆了1960年的时候,有些人在路上走着就摔倒饿死了。那时候如果有人干活慢一点,或者偷吃点东西,都会挨打。吴老人曾为了小孩走很远去挖冻坏的红薯,但还是有两个孩子在当时被饿死。
Wang Shuying (b.1935) is a resident of Liudian Village, Madian, Woyang, Anhui Province. Wang recollects that people were all starved during the Three Years of Natural Disasters. One only got 2 to 4 liang of rice per day. People ate dirt and tree barks. Wang’s uncle and aunt died of edema then.
王淑英(1935年生)是安徽省涡阳县马店镇刘店村村民。王老人回忆了三年自然灾害的时候,人们都很饿,每天只有二到四两米 ,吃观音土和树皮。老人的姑父和姑姑得浮肿病去世。
Yu Shumei (b.1944) is a resident of Liudian Village, Madian, Woyang, Anhui Province. Yu recollects her harshipd from 1958 to 1960. She ate sweet potato leaves and tree barks in different ways every day. The canteen only gave one two little buns per day. Yu only got to eat some sugar after she gave birth to a child. Yu’s parents led her to Xi’an to solicit food, but they had to come back because of the government there were catching solicitors. Two radishes then could buy a wife. She also heard that someone got so hungry that she ate a newly dead child in the field.
于淑美(1944年生)是安徽省涡阳县马店镇刘店村村民。于老人回忆了1958年到1960年吃的苦:每天用各种方法吃红薯叶子和树皮。当时的食堂里每天只发两个小馒头,老人坐月子才托人吃到一点糖。老人的父母曾带着她西安要饭,但那里政府抓人,只能回来。那时候两个萝卜可以换一个媳妇。她还听说有人饿得去地扒了一个刚死的小孩吃了。
