00:00:00--Wu Cunwen (b. 1938) is a resident of Wanquan County. In this interview, Wu says that in those years people didn't have enough to eat while a lot of things were wasted. Carrot were not harvested in time so they were frozen and got rotten. Villagers were labelled as bad people if they were caught picking up a corn or carrot to take home. Wu once had a whole basket of eggs taken away but didn't dare to object.
00:07:08--Wang Fenglan (b. 1944) is a resident of Zhulu County. In this interview, Wang says that the commue canteen started in 1958. Corn flour was the main food, had to mix with tree leaves because it was not enough. People were not allowed to raise chicken or pig at home although their intentions were to exchange for necessities like salt and vinegar. She often had to borrow money from the production team but was not always given. She said that she had better payments when she was working for the landlord before 1949.
00:11:09--Li Baoming (b. 1940) is a resident of Zhulu County. In this interview, Li says that people had to work hard day and night without enough food, but no food at all if they didn't work. No household was allowed to have grain at home, people would be critized at open meetings if they did.
