Interview with Wang Guizhi

Wang Guizhi (b.1932) is a resident of Wanbaochang Village, Tongchang Town, Yimen County, Yunnan Province. She married and moved to this village around 1949. Her husband was village head for many years till Cultural Revolution, and was critized in struggle sessions multple times. She said that people were not allowed to cook at home, had to eat at village canteen. There was not enough food and they ate wild vegetables. People had edema, some had stomachache and died eventually. 1959 was the most difficulty year. Villagers participated in various construction works: building road and dams and working at backyard furnace, but they had more food working at these sites.

王桂芝1932年出生。她1949年前后嫁到这个村子。丈夫当村长一直到文革，曾经多次被批斗。她说吃食堂的时候各家不准烧火，食堂吃不饱。人们吃野菜，得水肿病，有人肚子疼死掉。她说1959年最艰难，村里的劳力被派去大炼钢铁，修路，修水库，在工地上能吃得饱。
