Interview with Tian Peizhen

Tian Peizhen (b. 1930) is a resident of Puyuhe Village, Shaanxi Province. In this interview, Tian recalls the life during the Great Leap Forward and the Great Famine. At that time, because Tian’s family didn’t have enough labor forces, Tian and her husband had to work overtime every night to earn more work points. The women didn’t have any day off when they were pregnant and in one month after they gave birth, they had to go back to work, otherwise their work points would be deducted. Therefore, the women could only work with the babies on their back. The production team always took the villagers to different places to participate in production, and they usually had to get up in the middle of the night to work. If someone was late for work, their work points would be deducted. Scared that they might be criticized and punished, no one dared to question the cadres.

田佩珍1930年出生，是陕西省商洛市商南县青山镇普峪河村民。在这段口述中，田老人回忆了大跃进和大饥荒时期的生活。当时田老人家劳力少，为了多挣工分吃饭，她和丈夫不得不每天晚上加班干活。妇女怀孕都没有假期，生完孩子一满月就要回去干活，不然就要扣工分，所以她们只能一边把孩子背在身上一边干活。生产队经常把村民拉到不同的地方去搞生产，经常半夜就要起床干活，如果迟到了还要扣工分。因为害怕被批斗，没有人敢提出异议。
