Shi Xiangrong (b.1928) is a resident of Daguo Village, Linying County, Luohe City, Henan Province. During the Great Leap Forward, Shi was in her 30s. Her husband was away from home and she was sent to dig the Northern Canal until she got sick. When eating at the canteen, many people would sneakily put sweet potatoes in their own bags, but the interviewer Guo Rui’s grandmother didn’t dare to take any food. They ate little sweet potatoes and wheat stalks. Shi nearly died because of eating Chinese toon leaves. One son and one daughter of Shi’s died within the same year. Once, 9 people died within the same day and there were barely people to dig graves for the dead.
