- Description:

Shen Nianshen recalled that cooking pots and pans at home were all taken to be melted at village's iron furnace. The village canteen only had soup to serve people and only one spoon for each person at meal time. People tried to find anything to eat like kaolin clay and tree truck skins. People all starved. They were skinny with big belly and growling stomach. Some starved to death. Theings were not as strict in her parents' village so her family had a small vegetable garden and they survived the famine.
