Interview with Chang Xianglan, Zhang Bixin, Jiang Xiuying, and Wang Fanqi

Chang Xianglan (b.1938) said that there was not enough food at village canteen, she had to find tree leaves and wild herbs and mixed them with grain to feed everyone at home.

常香兰（1938年生）回忆吃食堂吃不饱，摘树叶和野菜混着粮食吃。

Zhang Bixin (b.1934) is a resident of Gaoyao, Luonan County, Shangluo City, Shaanxi Province. Zhang recollects that from 1958 to 60, they ate steamed buns made with corn and lime. Many people had serious constipation upon eating these and some old people died of constipation. Zhang’s family fixed roads and carried iron sand laboriously, but still could not earn enough food. Some children were starved to death. There was a mountain in front of his house and their job was to blow away the mountain and induce a river in this direction. Many people were injured by explosives and their limbs were simply cut off.

张必信（1934年生）是陕西省商洛市洛南县高耀镇兴农村村民。张老人回忆了58年到60年期间，在食堂吃玉米苞搅石灰蒸馍，人们便秘严重，有的老人因此而死。老人一家人拼命锄地、担铁砂，也吃不饱饭，有的孩子就饿死了。那时候，老人家门口是一座山，他们当时要把山切掉然后引一条河过来，好多人被炸药炸伤，只能锯胳膊、锯腿。

Wang Fanqi (b.1935) is resident of Gaoyao, Luonan County, Shangluo City, Shaanxi Province. Wang recollects eating at communal canteens. Due to lack of food, he did all kinds of work in exchange for more food. People were so hungry that they started to eat soil and tree bark.

王范启（1935年生）是陕西省商洛市洛南县高耀镇兴农村村民。王老人回忆了吃食堂的经历，由于吃不饱，他给生产队干过各种活来换取多一点的食物。 人们实在太饿就吃白土、吃榆树皮，老人的兄长吃了谷子糠和柿子叶，便秘致死。老人从大年初一开始工作到年底，起早贪黑，修地、切山改河。 老人的父亲劳动时腿断了，无人医治，后来去世。
