Interview with Liu Huafang

Liu Huafang (b. 1941) is a resident of Jiangwan Village, Shaanxi Province. In this interview, Liu talks about the life during the Great Famine. In 1958 when everyone was eating at the communal canteen, Liu was carrying iron in Ganjianggou Iron Factory and digging the land at the production team. At that time, there were nine people at Liu’s family, but everyone could only get around 10 Jin of grains. Life was the most difficult in 1960, when the production team only provided some food for the laborers. People like Liu who were not counted as labor forces could only live on wild vegetables.

刘花芳1941年出生，是陕西省商洛市丹凤县月日镇江湾村村民，在这段口述中，刘老人回忆了大饥荒时期的生活。58年吃大食堂，刘老人在甘江沟铁厂背铁，在生产队挖地。当时刘老人一家九口人，每人只分到十来斤粮食。60年最艰苦的时候，生产队只给干活的人分一点粮食，像刘老人这样没有劳力的就没有吃的，只能靠挖野菜果腹。
