Interview with Hu Rutian

胡入天1942年出生。他说解放前，山里打仗死人，野兽吃死人甚至吃活人。吃食堂和大炼钢铁是同时发生的。各家的锅台都被扒掉，大锅收走炼铁，给留一个小锅。大炼钢铁的时候，山上的树全被砍光了，加上牛羊多，山上草也没有；大炼钢铁过后，全村人一起在山上植树造林。吃食堂吃不饱饭，一些人得黄肿病，干活的人肚子饿干不动活。有老汉因为饿偷挖坟里的尸体吃，最后被抓住。59年还有一个丈夫把妻子杀了吃了。村干部因此而自缢。他还提到87年的洪水。

Hu Rutian (b. 1942) is a resident of Xiangzidian Village, Yinhua Town, Shanyang County, Shangluo City, Shanxi Province. He said that before liberation, dead bodies left on the battle field were eaten by wild animals. At People's Commue, stove at each house was demolished, big iron pots were taken to make iron, only one small pot was allowed to keep. To make iron at the backyard furnaces, trees on the hills were all cut off, grasses were eaten by cows and sheeps. Villagers planted trees after that period. There was not enough food at the Commune Canteen, people developed edema, people didn't have energy to work in the field. A man was caught stealing a corp from a grave to eat. In 1959 there was a cannobalist case, as a result the village cadre killed himself. He also mentioned the flood in 1987.
