Interview with Hu Qiangcai

胡强才1931年出生。他说58年开始那三年最困难。家里有四口人，吃食堂只有粥吃不饱。人们到山上找野菜采树叶充饥。有一个人得黄肿病死了。他在农村合作社种庄稼，修公路，搞水利，给铁厂烧炭，挣六七分工。当时有两个铁厂：西沟铁厂和下关铁厂。 那时候村子山上树砍了烧炭，草割了做肥料，山上光秃秃。

Hu Qiangcai (b. 1931) is a resident of Xiangzidian Village, Yinhua Town, Shanyang County, Shangluo City, Shanxi Province. He said that starting 1958 they had three very difficult years. There were four people in his family. They ate at village Commune Canteen, where only congee was served. People went to find wild vegetables and tree leaves in the mountains as food. One villager developed edema and died eventually. He worked for People's Commune on the farmland, was sent to contruct road and dams, and did charcoal burning for the two iron factories: Xigou Iron Factory and Xiaguan Iron Factory. He was a teenager and earned 60 to 70 percent of a regular laborer. All the trees in the mountains were cut and burned as charcoal, all grasses were cut to use as fertilizer, the mountains were barren.
