He Maigui (b.1928) is a resident of Daguo Village, Daguo Xiang, Linying County, Luohe City, Henan Province. During the famine of 1942, He’s sister was forced to marry to someone far away from home, so that her family could get a basket of food in return. In 1958, all the cookware was confiscated and families were not allowed to cook at home. People ate at the eating hall, where noodle soups did not have noodles. Many people starved to death. Unwilling to take orders, He refused to take the good job of cooking in the eating hall, but was still assigned the job of cooking when he went to work at the river. Workers at the river worked nonstop with day and night shifts. People worked hard there for steamed buns.
Wu Peng (b.1930), wife of He Maigui.
