Guo Xueliang (b.1949) is a resident of Daguo Village, Linying County, Luohe City, Henan Province. When people first started to eat in the eating hall, life was easy. They had enough food and got money every month. In the following two years, things got bad and people ate all kinds of famine food to survive. People in their thirties or forties had rely on walking sticks because of hunger. Guo recollects their hard work at the reservoir and their harsh supervisors. His father stole some food and killed himself by jumping into a well, for fear of being denounced, leaving behind his wife and four children. The youngest child was sent away. During the Cultural Revolution, Red Guards were treated well, and went around the country for free to communicate with each other. Guo travelled many places to denounce people.
