Du Shengfa (b. 1937) is a resident of Jiaqiao Village Group 4, Zhangcun Town, Dengzhou City, Henan Province. He is also the grandfather of the interviewer Du Guan. Nobody died in Du’s village during the Famine. When eating at communal canteens, one family only got one ladle of rice. Adults drank some thin porridge and children got something thicker. People were too hungry to even walk, so they sat on something pulled by cows when working in the field. Fortunately, their village had a vegetable garden. Other villages could only feed on wild plants. Du was a canteen accountant at Sanwuzhang and had some food at hand. Du’s cousin brought a woman to him for food and Du gave her a pan of sweet potatoes. The woman, who fled here out of hunger, refused to leave after this. She later became Du’s cousin’s wife.
