Fu Youcheng (b. 1934) is a resident of Dazhao Village (Group 3), Chang’an District, Xi’an City, Shaanxi Province. Fu recollects that during the Great Leap Forward, workers were getting less and less food. People grinded corncobs into powder to make steamed buns. At that time, people were sent to different reservoirs and work for work points. During the Production of Iron and Steel, although people were overworking without being fed, they had quite a morale. When there was no harvest later and people were forbidden to grow things on their own, people grew a few radishes. They scrambled for the radishes and cooked soup with radish leaves.
Chang Fufang is a resident of Dazhao Village, Chang’an District, Xi’an City, Shaanxi Province. It was really cold when living in the pit for constructing blast furnace. At that time her family had seven people, and worked like a cattle or a horse for earning work credits.
Bo Qingsong (b.1944) is a resident of Dazhao Village, Dazhao County, Chang’an District, Xi’an City, Shaanxi Province. In this interview, Bo recalls experiences during the Great Famine. There was not enough to eat at school and the school organized the search for food. In the winter they still had to construct blast furnace in the river way. All farming work was stopeed, and no one cared for the fields. In the People’s Commune canteen one still needed money to buy food with food tickets.
Quan Longan is a resident of Dazhao Village, Dazhao County, Chang’an District, Xi’an City, Shaanxi Province. In this interview, Quan recalls life during the Great Famine. At that time food tickets could only exchange for some rotten vegetables, which couldn’t be bought with money. When people went to Xi’an with a bun made with rotten vegetables, they would still worry about being robbed.
Wang Shuhui is a resident of Dazhao Village, Dazhao County, Chang’an District, Xi’an City, Shaanxi Province. In this interview, Wang remembers life during the Great Famine, especially the eperience of constructing blast furnace and the food people ate.
Du Zhixin (b. 1933) is a resident of Dazhao Village (Group 8), Chang’an District, Xi’an City, Shaanxi Province. During the 1958 Production of Iron and Steel, people of all kinds were soaked in the river panning for iron. Iron sand was sent to iron and steel department to be refined into iron nails. Everyone was occupied with iron and steel and none was farming. Every Production Team had a communal canteen and every stove served more than one hundred people, who competed for food. After the Campaign of People’s Communes, people lived on Production Teams, where there was no food but corn husks and bran. People who worked overtime could only have thin corn porridge.
Fu Chengxin (b. 1928) is a resident of Dazhao Village (Group 7), Chang’an District, Xi’an, Shaanxi Province. After the installation of communal canteens, people began to eat chopped corncobs. They made buns out of what came from washed corn husks, and everyone was limited to have only one of these. Fu’s family did not have enough food and often borrowed food from others. The people in the Production Team were of different minds and did not produce an enough harvest. After lands were redistributed to households, life started to get better.
Liu Zhiyun (b.1938) ) is a resident of Dazhao Village (Group 7), Chang’an District, Xi’an, Shaanxi Province. In 1958, during the Production of Iron and Steel, most people were working in the rivers and only a few people were left home to deal with corns and make corn porridge, and deliver the porridage to the river twice a day. People did not have fertilizers, so they pulled down houses and kangs (heated brick beds) and turned them into fertilizers. Before the Cultural Revolution, there was a socialization Education Campaign. Every team was divided into three groups to do four clean-ups. People who sold things were accused of speculating Rebel and royalists created much chaos. The royalists robbed the commune of everything. Commune members had many meetings, every morning and evening, asking for instructions and reports and reciting Chairman Mao’s quotations. During the Cultural Revolution, four landlords were confisticated, but only robes and clogs for bound feet were found.
Zha Wenfang (b. 1932) is a resident of Dazhao Village (Group 7), Chang’an District, Xi’an, Shaanxi Province. She recollects that during the period of Iron and Steel Production, the porridge at communal canteens was so watery that one could see one’s own reflection in it. People were wearing ragged clothes—even their best clothes were patched. Every day before sunrise, Zha moved feces with wheelbarrows, so that she could eat buns afterwards. Based on how much feces she moved, she got work points and, in turn, food. People had no money to visit doctors when they got sick and mostly died before long.
Wang Shufang (b.1941) is a resident of Dazhao Village, Dazhao County, Chang’an District, Xi’an City, Shaanxi Province. In this interview, Wang recalls life during the Great Famine. In 1958, she got married and came here, and went constructing blast furnace in the later half of the year. In 1960 she was pregnant but still had to work all day, and ended up having a miscarriage. At that time both food and clothes were lacking, the government only provided food for the animals, which could not be distributed to the Commune members.
Chen Xiuxian (b.1944) is a resident of Dazhao Village (Group 7), Chang’an District, Xi’an, Shaanxi Province. In 1958, Chen was in elementary school and every day after school, worked in the farm, panning for iron and steel in the river and deliver them. In winter, standing in the water with winnowing fans has left Chen with several sequelae. At night, they slept at kilns. Chen’s parents were repairing the Xitong Road. Chen and her mother were also babysitting others’ children. Chen’s mother, with her bound feet, needed to look after children after work. When panning iron and steel, people wasted much food and ran out of food in 1960. Children did not have inner clothings and were covered by layers of old clothes.
