- Assorted manuscript documents from the Massie family, arranged chronologically. This section includes the 1862 death of William Massie and subsequent control of the plantation by Maria C. Massie, his widow. Includes business correspondence, prices, and trade news, from Massie's agent J.M. Cobbs; includes lists of articles and items auctioned in 1862 by Maria C. Massie following William Massie's death; correspondence and receipts to Florence, Hope, and M.C. Massie regarding the impressment of coal, hay, oats, iron, potatoes, and horses for the Confederacy in 1863. Includes receipts for the enslaved labor of Jack and Richard, impressed by the Confederacy in Richmond "for work on fortifications at and near this City," on 1863 Sept. 23, as well as for Edwin, on 1864 February 24. Contains postwar correspondence to Maria Massie from her sister and daughter regarding family news and well-being, travels, income from boarders, and hiring rates for servants. One letter dated 1869 January 11 references mental health, noting that a family acquaintance "has lost her mind and is now in the insane asylum in Staunton."
