- Date:
- March 5, 2006
- Contributor:
- Ingram, Peter
- Description:
- Peter Ingram is a scientist from England, recruited to work in the Research Triangle Park in the 1960s. In 1968, Ingram, also a drummer, opened the Frog and Nightgown, a jazz club in Raleigh. In 1970, Thelonious Monk, a North Carolina native, played at the club. This oral history focuses on Ingram's efforts to bring live jazz performance to Raleigh, the challenges he faced, and his methods of getting the word out about his club. Ingram notes that threats from the KKK and local uproar didn't keep the club from opening. While mentioning some of the club's famous players including Stan Getz and Ervin Booker, Ingram also talks about setting up a historic series at the club by Thelonious Monk.
