- Contributor:
- Karales, Jim
- Description:
- James "Jim" Karales (1930-2002) was born in Canton, OH, and died in Croton-on-Hudson, NY. He worked for years as Eugene Smith's dark room assistant and printer: directly after college, he even lived with the Smiths and worked without pay. Karales worked for Look magazine from 1960-1972. In this oral history, Karales discusses working W. Eugene Smith as an assistant, and in particular, some of his experiences of printing photographs using complicated technical processes. Karales also talks about Smith's home in Croton-on-Hudson, the Pittsburgh photo project which he helped with, and Smith's retreat to the Jazz Loft in New York City.
