- Dick Katz (1924-2009) was born in Baltimore, MD and died in Manhattan. A pianist and arranger, Katz participated in loft jam sessions in the late 1950s. He was a long time friend of Hall Overton. In this oral history, Katz talks about his development as a musician and his life in New York City. He gives details about attending Manhattan School of Music, composition courses he took with Hall Overton at the New School, and his experiences playing with Charlie Parker and a variety of musicians in the jazz scene at the time. Katz also discusses his own writings about music and shares his views on Ken Burns' Jazz documentary series.
