Confederate narrative of C.T. Allen recounting his experiences during the United States Civil War. Discusses time in the 20th Regiment, Virginia Volunteers, with an account of the battle of Rich Mountain; the subsequent retreat; the disbanding of Allen's unit and organization of Co. F, 2nd Regiment, Virginia Artillery; defense of Richmond; loss of Fort Harrison and battle of Sayler's Creek; and Allen's capture and imprisonment in the Old Capitol Prison in Washington and later on Johnson's Island, Lake Erie. Included is a roster of the officers and men serving in Allen's company.
Biographical Sketch of Creators:
C.T. Allen served as an officer in the Confederate States of America Army. He joined the Flat Rock Riflemen, which became part of the Twentieth Regiment, Virginia Volunteers; he began as a second lieutenant and was later promoted to lieutenant and eventually captain. After the Confederate States of America Army lost, Allen became editor of the Princeton Banner, a newspaper in Princeton, Kentucky.There are three accompanying items: a folded manuscript notice indicating that the volume was filed with the Lunenberg County Court on May 10th, 1897; a newspaper clipping showing support for the Lost Cause ("gray soldier of a cause that never was or never can be lost"); and a printed poem, "The U.D.C." by J.B. Bell, dated May 1919.
Pages 170-196 are blank.
Pages 115-116 excised "to correct an error written therein" (page 117). Signed by Allen and dated 1896.
