- Title:
- [Menaion].
- Alternative Title:
- Menaion. Byzantine Greek. 1200
- Date:
- 1200s
- Creator:
- Orthodox Eastern Church.
- Description:
-
Forms part of the Kenneth Willis Clark Collection of Greek Manuscripts (David M. Rubenstein Rare Book & Manuscript Library, Duke University)
Format: Manuscript codex.
Title supplied by cataloger.
Layout: Written in 2 columns of 45 lines; ruled; prickings visible.
Script: Written by two scribes: Scribe I: fol. 1-167; Scribe II: fol. 168-244. Scribe I: Very fine, professional, regular, small, clear minuscule in a black ink, faded to brown. Ink has faded away almost completely in some places. Scribe II: Slightly larger minuscule, with a slightly wider nib. Still very neat and fine. Same black ink, faded to brown. Uncial theta, lambda, gamma and xi. Occasional blocks of notes written in the margins, in the same hand and ink. In both sections, there is a crude scrawl in black ink (fol. 17v) and also other handwriting in a later hand (fol. 48r, etc.). Red titles throughout.
Decoration: Faded red uncial initials set in outer margins and intercolumnar spaces, some ornamented and as high as 11 lines. Ornamental penwork in faded red ink and occasionally black ink (fol. 21r, f. 25r, f. 33r. etc.). Rectangular bar headpiece in faded red ink (fol. 1r).
Title cataloged from existing description.
Menaion, incomplete at the end, and there are also lacunae in the text, e.g. a leaf missing in the first signature, a leaf torn out between fol. 188-189, etc. Signature designation is in the upper right corner and there is evidence of a corrector, e.g. fol. 129r. There is also a lock of black and gray hair in fol. 31r.
Binding: The binding is, very likely, the original one: leather over heavy wooden boards; back cover has lost its wooden portion; sack-cloth lining. Preserved in strong cloth folder and leather-backed heavy slipcase (by P. Dusel, 1985).
