| Hoo, disaster. | 3:50 | |
| (congregation singing) | 3:55 | |
| - | It is not easy to face our sin, | 6:29 |
| or to admit that we are less than we pretend to be. | 6:32 | |
| We find it easier to raise protective barriers | 6:36 | |
| than to break down our defenses and allow God to change us. | 6:39 | |
| Share now in the power of honest confession. | 6:44 | |
| Let us join in the prayer of confession | 6:47 | |
| found on page 890 in your handbook. | 6:49 | |
| Most merciful God, | 6:58 | |
| we confess that we have sinned against you | 7:00 | |
| in thought, word, and deed, | 7:03 | |
| by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. | 7:06 | |
| We have not loved you with our whole heart. | 7:11 | |
| We have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. | 7:15 | |
| We are truly sorry, and we humbly repent. | 7:19 | |
| For the sake of your son, Jesus Christ, | 7:23 | |
| have mercy on us, and forgive us, | 7:26 | |
| that we may delight in your will, | 7:30 | |
| and walk in your ways, | 7:32 | |
| to the glory of your name. | 7:34 | |
| Amen. | 7:37 | |
| May Almighty God, who caused light to shine out of darkness, | 7:44 | |
| shine in our hearts, | 7:48 | |
| cleansing us from all our sins, | 7:50 | |
| and restoring us to the light of the knowledge | 7:53 | |
| of God's glory. | 7:56 | |
| In the face of Jesus Christ, our savior, Amen. | 7:58 | |
| You may be seated. | 8:04 | |
| - | Let us pray together the prayer for illumination. | 8:18 |
| Open our hearts and minds, oh God, | 8:22 | |
| by the power of your Holy Spirit, | 8:26 | |
| so that, as the word is read and proclaimed, | 8:29 | |
| we may hear your message with joy this day. | 8:33 | |
| Amen. | 8:37 | |
| The first lesson is taken | 8:40 | |
| from Paul's letter to the Ephesians, | 8:42 | |
| the fourth chapter, beginning with verse 25. | 8:45 | |
| "So, then, putting away falsehood, | 8:51 | |
| "let all of us speak the truth to our neighbors, | 8:55 | |
| "for we are members of one another. | 8:58 | |
| "Be angry, but do not sin, | 9:02 | |
| "do not let the sun go down on your anger, | 9:05 | |
| "and do not make room for the Devil. | 9:08 | |
| "Thieves must give up stealing. | 9:11 | |
| "Rather, let them labor and work honestly | 9:14 | |
| "with their own hands, | 9:17 | |
| "so as to have something to share with the needy. | 9:18 | |
| "Let no evil talk come out of your mouths, | 9:22 | |
| "but only what is useful for building up, | 9:26 | |
| "as there is need, | 9:29 | |
| "so that your words may give grace to those who hear. | 9:30 | |
| "And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, | 9:35 | |
| "with which you were marked with a seal | 9:39 | |
| "for the day of redemption. | 9:41 | |
| "Put away from you all bitterness, and wrath, | 9:43 | |
| "and anger, and wrangling, and slander, | 9:47 | |
| "together with all malice. | 9:51 | |
| "And be kind to one another, | 9:53 | |
| "tender-hearted, forgiving one another, | 9:55 | |
| "as God in Christ has forgiven you. | 9:59 | |
| "Therefore, be imitators of God, | 10:03 | |
| "as beloved children, | 10:06 | |
| "and live in love, | 10:07 | |
| "as Christ loved us, | 10:09 | |
| "and gave himself up for us, | 10:11 | |
| "a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God." | 10:13 | |
| This is the word of the Lord. | 10:18 | |
| Congregation | Thanks be to God. | 10:21 |
| - | The second reading is from the Gospel of John, | 10:24 |
| chapter six, verses 35, and 41 to 51. | 10:27 | |
| "Jesus said to them, 'I am the bread of life. | 10:35 | |
| "'Whoever comes to me will never be hungry, | 10:40 | |
| "'and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty.' | 10:43 | |
| "Then the Jews began to complain about him, | 10:48 | |
| "because he said, 'I am the bread | 10:50 | |
| "'that came down from heaven.' | 10:53 | |
| "They were saying, 'is not this Jesus, | 10:55 | |
| "'the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know? | 10:58 | |
| "'How can he now say, I have come down from Heaven?' | 11:02 | |
| "Jesus answered them, 'do not complain among yourselves. | 11:06 | |
| "'No one can come to me unless strong by the Father | 11:11 | |
| "'who sent me. | 11:14 | |
| "'And I will raise that person up on the last day. | 11:16 | |
| "'It is written in the prophets, | 11:21 | |
| "'and they shall all be taught by God. | 11:23 | |
| "'Everyone who has heard and learned from the Father | 11:27 | |
| "'comes to me. | 11:29 | |
| "'Not that anyone has seen the Father, | 11:32 | |
| "'except the one who is from God. | 11:33 | |
| "'He has seen the Father. | 11:36 | |
| "'Very truly, I tell you, whoever believes has eternal life. | 11:39 | |
| "'I am the bread of life. | 11:45 | |
| "''Your ancestors ate the mana in the wilderness, | 11:48 | |
| "'and they died. | 11:51 | |
| "'This is the bread that comes down from Heaven, | 11:54 | |
| "'so that one may eat of it and not die. | 11:56 | |
| "'I am the living bread that came down from Heaven. | 12:00 | |
| "'Whoever eats of this bread will live forever, | 12:04 | |
| "'and the bread that I will give for the life of the world | 12:07 | |
| "'is my flesh.'" | 12:11 | |
| This is the word of the Lord. | 12:14 | |
| Thanks be to God. | 12:17 | |
| - | Reading the Gospel in Dutch- | 12:35 |
| - | This is the Gospel of John, | 15:08 |
| according to the Netherlands, | 15:11 | |
| the Dutch translation. | 15:13 | |
| Today, I would like to give honor to God | 15:17 | |
| for this opportunity to stand here, | 15:20 | |
| to proclaim the message, and to express my appreciation | 15:24 | |
| to the Dean of the Chapel, Dean Willimon, | 15:28 | |
| and the associate Dean, Debra Brazell, | 15:31 | |
| for this opportunity. | 15:34 | |
| A few weeks ago, I visited a friend of mine, | 15:37 | |
| and we talked about the situation in Rwanda. | 15:42 | |
| Praying, wishing, and hoping, | 15:47 | |
| that the international community | 15:51 | |
| would bring an end to this dreadful situation. | 15:54 | |
| As we talked, | 15:59 | |
| my friend's seven- or eight-year-old daughter was around, | 16:00 | |
| and she had a lot of questions. | 16:04 | |
| Specifically, questions about the geographic location of | 16:07 | |
| where all of this was taking place. | 16:12 | |
| So her mother took a globe | 16:16 | |
| and pointed out to her where Rwanda was, | 16:17 | |
| and Zaire, and what was happening, | 16:22 | |
| and how the people were moving from Rwanda to Zaire. | 16:24 | |
| And the little girl became afraid, | 16:29 | |
| I would say, horrified, insisting that | 16:33 | |
| we could not allow people to go to Zaire, | 16:37 | |
| or they will all die. | 16:41 | |
| We would never be able to see them again. | 16:44 | |
| And her mother tried to assure her that | 16:48 | |
| things would be okay. | 16:52 | |
| The child disappeared for a while, | 16:56 | |
| and then reappeared with books. | 16:58 | |
| And she tried to share with us her worldview, | 17:03 | |
| her understanding, | 17:06 | |
| of what happens in Zaire. | 17:09 | |
| You see, this child was educated to believe | 17:12 | |
| that the people in Zaire were cannibals. | 17:16 | |
| They ate other people. | 17:21 | |
| So she was really afraid. | 17:25 | |
| As I listened to this child, I thought, | 17:30 | |
| how fearful it must be | 17:34 | |
| for most of the world's people, | 17:37 | |
| who are devoured up by economic and political cannibals, | 17:41 | |
| chewing their souls, | 17:47 | |
| and draining them of all hope, | 17:50 | |
| power, and self-esteem. | 17:55 | |
| The disparity between the world's people is great. | 17:59 | |
| We categorize the world into First World, | 18:05 | |
| Second World, | 18:10 | |
| and Third World peoples, | 18:12 | |
| with the First World people being the most | 18:15 | |
| economical and political powerful. | 18:18 | |
| While the Third World people are the poorest. | 18:22 | |
| The desolate. | 18:26 | |
| The irony of this, however, is that | 18:29 | |
| the Third World people possess | 18:33 | |
| most of the world's raw, natural resources. | 18:35 | |
| However, they continue to be the poorest. | 18:43 | |
| Not because they are lesser ilks, | 18:50 | |
| but because of continued domination | 18:54 | |
| by peoples of the other World. | 18:57 | |
| When they come to the international negotiation table, | 19:01 | |
| they come not as equals. | 19:06 | |
| They come as price-takers, | 19:10 | |
| rather than price-makers. | 19:13 | |
| They must settle, or be settled. | 19:16 | |
| They must sign suicidal peace treaties, | 19:20 | |
| or be torn to pieces. | 19:23 | |
| They must comply, or be labeled, | 19:26 | |
| complacent communists, or immoral terrorists, | 19:29 | |
| or a combination of these adjectives. | 19:34 | |
| The early Christians knew, too well, | 19:40 | |
| what it meant to be at the bottom of the barrel. | 19:44 | |
| The last rung of the social ladder. | 19:49 | |
| You see, they were the minorities among the minorities. | 19:54 | |
| It is therefore no wonder that their central practice | 19:59 | |
| was misrepresented and stereotyped. | 20:04 | |
| Yes, the early Christians were said to be cannibalistic. | 20:09 | |
| They were turned to these people who ate each other's flesh | 20:16 | |
| and drank each other's blood. | 20:22 | |
| All because the Eucharist, the Lord's supper | 20:27 | |
| that we celebrate, | 20:30 | |
| was central in their belief. | 20:32 | |
| You see, in the early Church, the teachings and practice | 20:36 | |
| of the Church, were guarded very closely. | 20:39 | |
| That's because of the persecution. | 20:43 | |
| And so many people outside of the Church | 20:46 | |
| did not understand what was happening with the Christians. | 20:50 | |
| And we know, if we don't know what's going on, | 20:54 | |
| that we just make it up. | 20:56 | |
| We know too well in this culture | 21:00 | |
| how ignorance, or the lack of knowledge | 21:04 | |
| about other people's cultures and beliefs | 21:07 | |
| leads to stereotyping. | 21:11 | |
| In our text today, | 21:15 | |
| the Lord utter these words: | 21:17 | |
| - | Speaking Dutch | 21:22 |
| "I am the living bread | 21:46 | |
| "that came down from Heaven. | 21:49 | |
| "Anyone eating this bread shall live forever." | 21:52 | |
| This text continues with an invitation that we | 21:59 | |
| eat on this flesh, | 22:04 | |
| and that is the modest, English interpretation of it. | 22:05 | |
| The Greek renders it that we chew on this flesh. | 22:10 | |
| And drink this blood. | 22:16 | |
| So that we might have a full life in Christ. | 22:20 | |
| A life that is rooted in our baptismal vows. | 22:26 | |
| A life of reconciliation. | 22:31 | |
| A life that bears witness to the redeeming works of Christ. | 22:35 | |
| The Eucharist, or the Lord's supper that we celebrate, | 22:42 | |
| is central for our understanding | 22:46 | |
| of Christ's redemptive work. | 22:49 | |
| The Eucharist calls us to | 22:53 | |
| experience a newness in Christ. | 22:56 | |
| This newness is both a vertical and horizontal relationship. | 23:00 | |
| The Eucharist expresses | 23:07 | |
| God's relationship to us, | 23:10 | |
| and our relationship | 23:14 | |
| with each other. | 23:17 | |
| So as we come around the Eucharist table, | 23:21 | |
| we are invited to come so that we might be one | 23:25 | |
| in the Spirit with Christ. | 23:28 | |
| So that together we can come with one voice, | 23:32 | |
| glorifying God, | 23:36 | |
| and joining with angels and archangels | 23:38 | |
| and a company of hosts crying, | 23:41 | |
| "holy, holy, holy, | 23:45 | |
| "God of power and might, | 23:48 | |
| "Heaven and Earth are full of your glory, | 23:51 | |
| "Hosanna in the highest." | 23:54 | |
| When we render praise and thanks to God, | 23:58 | |
| for his redemptive work, | 24:02 | |
| then Saint Cyril of Jerusalem says, | 24:05 | |
| "we move from the Earthly fear, | 24:08 | |
| "and enter into the opportunity to meet God | 24:12 | |
| "in his very presence." | 24:17 | |
| In the book of Colossians, the writer refers to this | 24:20 | |
| as the ability to set our minds on things above, | 24:23 | |
| so that we might be here in Christ. | 24:28 | |
| In the Eucharist, we are called to | 24:35 | |
| draw near to God, | 24:39 | |
| so that we might experience grace, and mercy, | 24:42 | |
| to help us in a time of need. | 24:47 | |
| We're also reminded that, | 24:53 | |
| while we worship in this presence of God, that | 24:55 | |
| if we remember that we have | 25:00 | |
| sinned against our brother and sister, | 25:03 | |
| to leave a gift at the alter. | 25:06 | |
| You see, this is where we enter into the horizontal | 25:09 | |
| relating with God. | 25:14 | |
| For in order for us to understand what it means | 25:17 | |
| to be in that vertical relationship with God, | 25:21 | |
| then we must be faithful in our horizontal relating, | 25:25 | |
| one to the other. | 25:29 | |
| So therefore, if we come to the table | 25:32 | |
| and we remember that we have ought with a brother or sister, | 25:34 | |
| the scripture says, "leave your gift at the alter, | 25:38 | |
| "and go be reconciled to that brother and sister." | 25:43 | |
| For Christ says to us, "How can you love the Father | 25:49 | |
| "that you have not seen? | 25:54 | |
| "If you continue to hate your brother and sister | 25:58 | |
| "that you live with daily?" | 26:03 | |
| In the Eucharist, when we come into God's presence | 26:06 | |
| to celebrate this supper, | 26:10 | |
| we pray that God would send His Holy Spirit | 26:12 | |
| upon the people and upon the gifts, | 26:16 | |
| the wine, and the bread. | 26:19 | |
| This is our way that we enter into God's horizontal, | 26:23 | |
| reconciling work in Christ. | 26:29 | |
| The Eucharist brings us together | 26:33 | |
| as one people in Christ, | 26:35 | |
| from the east, from the west, | 26:38 | |
| far and near, | 26:41 | |
| weak and strong, | 26:44 | |
| Third Worlds or First Worlds. | 26:46 | |
| For in Christ, we are one people. | 26:49 | |
| For isn't the bread that we partake in | 26:54 | |
| the body of Christ? | 26:58 | |
| And because we who are many participate | 27:01 | |
| and partake of one bread, | 27:05 | |
| then we, too, are one in Christ. | 27:07 | |
| When we experience the Eucharistic meal | 27:13 | |
| by being in God's presence | 27:16 | |
| and by the ability to love each other in the Church, | 27:19 | |
| it does not end there. | 27:23 | |
| But we are called and challenged, | 27:26 | |
| that we should take this experience with us | 27:28 | |
| in our daily lives | 27:32 | |
| so that Eucharist that we celebrate | 27:35 | |
| can become for us a practice of word and deed. | 27:38 | |
| I grew up in a small farm community in Suriname, | 27:44 | |
| where the people were Christians, Muslim, Hindus, | 27:50 | |
| you name it. | 27:54 | |
| My family that I lived in was Catholic. | 27:57 | |
| And we only saw a priest about three times a year. | 28:03 | |
| And whenever the priest came, all Christians went. | 28:08 | |
| Because that was the opportunity to assemble together | 28:13 | |
| as a Church. | 28:17 | |
| And after the Holy Communion, all families were given | 28:20 | |
| a portion of the bread to take back home with them, | 28:26 | |
| so that, by our daily practice, | 28:31 | |
| the Eucharist would be alive and present with us. | 28:36 | |
| The Eucharist, once we take it back with us, | 28:42 | |
| helps us to realize, and it's not just the physical bread, | 28:46 | |
| but the spirit of the Eucharist, | 28:50 | |
| calls us to realize that, once we live in Christ, | 28:51 | |
| then we are called to a life of radical extremism. | 28:56 | |
| We are called to be radical in our love. | 29:02 | |
| We can no longer, once we experience | 29:06 | |
| the spirit of the Eucharist, | 29:10 | |
| have a hate for each other, | 29:12 | |
| but rather we are called to love God | 29:14 | |
| with all our hearts, | 29:17 | |
| and with all our mind, | 29:19 | |
| and with all our strength, | 29:20 | |
| and our neighbor as ourself. | 29:23 | |
| We are called to love our enemies. | 29:26 | |
| To do good to those who hate us and persecute us. | 29:29 | |
| We are called to a radical life of justice. | 29:36 | |
| A justice that Amos speaks about in the Old Testament, | 29:40 | |
| that rolls down like rivers of water. | 29:44 | |
| A justice that helps us to know | 29:48 | |
| that we cannot be complacent | 29:51 | |
| as long as there is injustice anywhere. | 29:53 | |
| We are challenged to a life of righteousness. | 29:58 | |
| Not a life that is filled with double=talk, | 30:03 | |
| and political correctness, | 30:06 | |
| but rather a life that will help us to say | 30:09 | |
| like the Apostle Paul, that we bear the marks of Christ | 30:12 | |
| in our bodies, | 30:16 | |
| and therefore, we are not ashamed of the Gospel of God, | 30:18 | |
| for it's our power unto salvation. | 30:23 | |
| Today, God calls us to eat his flesh, | 30:28 | |
| to drink his blood, | 30:33 | |
| and as we do that, we can stand with Martin Luther and say, | 30:35 | |
| "here I stand, I am assured." | 30:40 | |
| - | The Lord be with you. | 30:58 |
| Congregation | And also with you. | 31:00 |
| - | Let us pray. | 31:02 |
| God of creation, | 31:09 | |
| we thank you that you loved us enough | 31:11 | |
| to take on our flesh, | 31:14 | |
| and redeem it through the death and resurrection | 31:16 | |
| of your Son. | 31:19 | |
| Give us the courage to eat your bread, | 31:22 | |
| and drink your blood, | 31:25 | |
| that we might abide in you, and you in us. | 31:27 | |
| Lord, in your mercy, | 31:32 | |
| hear our prayer. | 31:35 | |
| God of abundance, | 31:38 | |
| we have too often settled for so much less | 31:40 | |
| than you would give us. | 31:42 | |
| We work for the mana which perishes, | 31:45 | |
| when we could have eternal life. | 31:47 | |
| We look for ways to secure our transitory lives, | 31:51 | |
| when we could have true security in Christ. | 31:55 | |
| We seek out an existence and struggle to survive | 31:59 | |
| when we are offered life abundant. | 32:03 | |
| Our lives are spent in meaningless, frantic activity, | 32:07 | |
| when we could know fulfillment | 32:12 | |
| and a sense of purpose through Christ. | 32:14 | |
| You want so much more for us. | 32:17 | |
| You have offered so much more to us. | 32:21 | |
| Help us to want it and accept it for ourselves. | 32:25 | |
| Lord, in your mercy, | 32:29 | |
| hear our prayer. | 32:32 | |
| God of mercy, | 32:35 | |
| as you show compassion and mercy to us, | 32:37 | |
| so you call us to be compassionate and merciful | 32:40 | |
| to one another. | 32:44 | |
| Through the Eucharist, you call us to a life of unity, | 32:46 | |
| where what impacts one of us impacts all of us. | 32:50 | |
| Remove the protective barriers that we erect | 32:55 | |
| around our hearts, | 32:59 | |
| for fear that we might be used up by the needs we encounter. | 33:01 | |
| Remind us that love is increased by being given, | 33:06 | |
| rather than by being hoarded. | 33:10 | |
| Lord, in your mercy, | 33:14 | |
| hear our prayer. | 33:16 | |
| God of power, | 33:19 | |
| we ask for wholeness, | 33:21 | |
| for ourselves, for the Church, and for the world. | 33:23 | |
| The complexities of our world are overwhelming, | 33:29 | |
| and sometimes we know not how to respond. | 33:32 | |
| Give us guidance. | 33:37 | |
| Show us what we can do to make a difference. | 33:39 | |
| Do for us what we cannot do for ourselves. | 33:43 | |
| Lord, in your mercy, | 33:48 | |
| hear our prayer. | 33:50 | |
| God of freedom, | 33:54 | |
