The first lesson is taken from the second book of Samuel. | 7:15
Chapter 6, verses 1-5 | 7:19
and verses 12B-19. | 7:23
"David again gathered all the chosen men of Israel, 30,000. | 7:28
David, and all the people with him, | 7:35
set out and went from Baala, Judah, | 7:37
to bring up from there, the ark of God. | 7:40
Which is called by the name of the Lord of Hosts, | 7:43
who is enthroned on the Cherubim. | 7:46
They carried the ark of God on a new cart, | 7:50
and brought it out of the house of Abinadab, | 7:53
which was on the hill. | 7:56
Uzzah and Ahio, the sons of Abinadab, | 7:58
were driving the new cart with the ark of God, | 8:02
and Ahio went in front of the ark. | 8:06
David, and all the house of Israel, | 8:09
were dancing before the Lord with all their might. | 8:11
With songs, and lyres, and harps, and tambourines, | 8:14
and castanets, and cymbals. | 8:17
So David went, and brought up the ark of God, | 8:20
from the house of Obed-edum to the city of David | 8:23
with rejoicing. | 8:26 | |
And when those who bore the ark of the Lord | 8:29
had gone six paces, he sacrificed an ox, and a fatling. | 8:31
David danced before the Lord with all his might, | 8:37
the ark of the Lord with shouting and with the sound | 8:41
of the trumpet. | 8:44 | |
As the ark of the Lord came into the city of David, | 8:46
Michael, daughter of Saul, looked out of the window | 8:49
and saw King David leaping and dancing before the Lord | 8:54
and she despised him in her heart. | 8:58
They brought in the ark of the Lord, | 9:02
and set it in it's place inside the tent | 9:04
David had pitched for it, and David offered | 9:08
burnt offerings and offerings of well-being | 9:11
before the Lord. | 9:14 | |
When David had finished offering the burnt offerings, | 9:17
and the offerings of well-being, | 9:20
he blessed the people in the name | 9:22
of the Lord of Hosts, and distributed food among | 9:24
all the people, the whole multitude of Israel, | 9:27
both men and women. | 9:30
To each, a cake of bread, a portion of meat, | 9:32
and a cake of raisins. | 9:36
Then all the people went back to their homes." | 9:39

Dr. Johnson | The second reading is from the | 13:24 |
gospel of Mark, Chapter 6, | 13:26
verses 14-29. | 13:29 | |
"King Herod heard of it, for Jesus' name | 13:34
had become known. | 13:38
Some were saying, 'John the Baptizer has been raised | 13:40
from the dead, and for this reason, these | 13:43
powers are at work in him.' | 13:45
But others said, 'it is a prophet, like | 13:48
one of the prophets of old.' | 13:51
But when Herod heard of it, he said, | 13:54
'John, whom I beheaded, has been raised.' | 13:57
For Herod himself had sent men who arrested John, | 14:00
bound him, and put him in prison, on account | 14:04
of Herodius, his brother Phillip's wife, | 14:06
because Herod had married her. | 14:09
For John had been telling Herod, | 14:12
'It is not lawful for you to have your brother's wife.' | 14:14
And Herodius held a grudge against him, | 14:18
and wanted to kill him. | 14:20
But she could not, for Herod feared John, | 14:23
knowing that he was a righteous man, | 14:26
and he protected him. | 14:29
But an opportunity came, when Herod, on his birthday, | 14:32
gave a banquet for his courtiers, and officers, | 14:35
and for the leaders of Galilee. | 14:39
When his daughter Herodius came in and danced, | 14:42
she pleased Herod and his guests, | 14:45
and the King says to the girl, | 14:48
'Ask me for whatever you wish, and I will give it.' | 14:50
And he solemnly swore to her, | 14:55
'Whatever you ask me, I will give you, | 14:57
even half of my kingdom.' | 14:59
She went out and said to her mother, | 15:03
'What should I ask for?' | 15:05
She replied, 'The head of John the Baptizer.' | 15:07
Immediately, she rushed back to the King, | 15:12
and requested, 'I want you to give me | 15:14
at once the head of John the Baptist | 15:16
on a platter.' | 15:18 | |
The king was deeply grieved, | 15:21
yet out of regard for his oaths, and for the guests, | 15:23
he did not want to refuse her. | 15:26
Immediately, the King sent a soldier of the guard | 15:28
with orders to bring John's head. | 15:31
He went and beheaded him in the prison, | 15:34
brought his head on a platter, | 15:37
and gave it to the girl. | 15:39
Then the girl gave it to her mother. | 15:41
When his disciples heard about it, | 15:45
they came and took his body, and laid it in a tomb." | 15:47

Preacher | Today's epistle is from | 21:51 |
the letter to the Ephesians. | 21:53
"Blessed be the God and Father of our | 21:58
Lord Jesus Christ. | 22:00
Who has blessed us in Christ with every | 22:03
spiritual blessing in the heavenly places. | 22:05

foundation of the world to be Holy and blameless | 22:12
before him in love. | 22:15
He destined us for adoption as children | 22:17

According to the good pleasure of his will, | 22:22
to the praise of his glorious grace, | 22:25

In him, we have redemption through his blood, | 22:33
the forgiveness of our trespass, according to | 22:36
the riches of his grace that he lavished on us. | 22:39
With all wisdom and insight he has made | 22:44
known to us the mystery of his will. | 22:46
According to his good pleasure that he set forth | 22:49
in Christ, as a plan for the fullness of time, | 22:51
to gather up all things in Him, things in Heaven, | 22:56
things on Earth. | 22:59 | |

To the praise of His glory." | 23:41
This is the word of the Lord. | 23:46
(congregation responds) | 23:49
One of the nice things about summer, | 23:53
is that the leisure provided by this time of the year, | 23:57
gives you a chance to read those books you've | 24:00
laid aside over the course of the year. | 24:04
And recently, I read a book called, "Dakota" | 24:09
by the writer Kathleen Norris. | 24:13
"Dakota", a spiritual autobiography. | 24:18
Norris tells about moving from the big city, | 24:22
out to the plains of North Dakota. | 24:25
She doesn't say much about her Christian faith | 24:30
in the book, but in one place in the book | 24:34
Norris recalls growing up in a Presbyterian church | 24:37
in her childhood. | 24:42
And she says, 'I don't remember a lot about | 24:44
church in my childhood. I remember going | 24:46
to a confirmation class, and I did well | 24:48
because I was good at memorization. | 24:52
I remember a kindly pastor. | 24:54
But most of all, what I remember from my | 24:57
childhood church, is singing in my dad's choir. | 25:00
I remember the singing. | 25:06
And looking back, I would say that maybe the purpose | 25:09
of church is praise. | 25:12
The purpose, is the praise.' | 25:17
Now I know, that that might be a problem for you. | 25:24
Because, you are here in the middle of July, | 25:31
in church. | 25:36 | |
And if you go to church, in the middle of July, | 25:38
when most people are on vacation, | 25:40
that's probably a sign, that you are extremely | 25:41
serious about your Christian faith. | 25:44
Oh, there are some slackers show up here | 25:47
on Easter, Christmas, that's enough for them. | 25:49
But not for you. | 25:52 | |
Even though you're on vacation, | 25:54
even though you're coming down 85, | 25:56
you're headed south, you're headed north, | 25:59
you're getting ready, everybody else is out at the lake, | 26:01
you are here in church because you are disciplined. | 26:04
Because you want to work on your faith. | 26:09
And of course, we Americans | 26:13
pride ourselves on our ability to work, | 26:16
and our ability to do. | 26:19
And it's only reasonable that we should do | 26:21
the Christian faith in the same way that | 26:23
we do everything else. | 26:26
We like thinking of ourselves as self-made men, | 26:28
and self-made women. | 26:33
One of Emerson's most famous essays was entitled, | 26:35
'Self-Reliance' | 26:38
'Self-Reliance', if you haven't read it since high school, | 26:40
I'll sum it up for you: | 26:43
'Please mother, I'd rather do it myself' | 26:44
Browse around, at your neighborhood bookstore | 26:47
in the self-help section, it's one of the largest sections. | 26:51
Do-it-yourself, how to fix it yourself, | 26:55
how to do it yourself, self-therapy. | 26:58
We are big on doing things for ourselves. | 27:02
And yet, the scripture which I have just read you, | 27:06
this glorious hymn, which opens the letter | 27:10
to the Ephesians. | 27:14
In this passage of scripture | 27:16
Paul speaks about something that we have not done | 27:22
for ourselves. | 27:26 | |
Something that we have not achieved through | 27:29
hard work, or burning the midnight oil, | 27:30
or sly maneuvering, or earnest endeavor. | 27:34
He's talking about our salvation. | 27:39
He's talking about our relationship to God. | 27:43
"Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord, Jesus Christ." | 27:47
Paul opens his letter. | 27:52
"God has blessed us." | 27:54
How has God blessed us? | 27:56
"God chose us in Christ before the very | 27:58
foundation of the world. He destined us for adoption | 28:01
as his children through Jesus Christ. | 28:05
He freely bestowed upon us, in Him, we have redemption, | 28:07
in Him, we have forgiveness. | 28:13
And he has made known to us the mystery of his will." | 28:16
Note, who has done all of this. | 28:24
Note, where the action is in these sentences. | 28:27
It's with God, not with us. | 28:33
We gather as Christians on Sunday to praise God. | 28:38
And we go to the office on Monday through Saturday | 28:43
not in order to get somewhere with God | 28:49
but rather because we believe that in Christ | 28:54
we've already arrived with God. | 28:58
We sing songs to God here on Sunday morning, | 29:02
we bless God here on Sunday with our songs. | 29:04
So that Monday and the rest of the week in the office | 29:09
we might bless God with our deeds. | 29:12
God has blessed us, chosen us, redeemed us, forgiven us. | 29:17
And because of all this, Paul says, | 29:24
"We might live to His praise." | 29:28
When someone gives you a gift, what do you say? | 29:34
You say, "Thanks." | 29:36
And you might think of all Christian ethics, | 29:40
and all Christian believing and doing, | 29:43
as our Christian way of saying, "Thanks," | 29:47
as our song of thanksgiving to God. | 29:50
And you may be the only song to God that | 29:53
anybody may ever hear. | 29:56
So you want to make it a good song. | 29:59
A song worth singing, | 30:02
a song with so catchy a tune, that others | 30:03
might pick it up and get the beat as well. | 30:06
But I confess, that as a preacher, | 30:11
when I looked at this morning's scripture | 30:13
from Ephesians, | 30:15 | |
the preacher in me did not know exactly | 30:18
what to do with it. | 30:20
By that, I mean that you and I, | 30:22
good, American, achieving, self-help people that we are, | 30:24
you and I have been conditioned | 30:28
to think that sermons are mostly addressed to us. | 30:31
They are about what WE are supposed to do. | 30:36
The tales on how WE are to think, | 30:39
or WE are to feel, or WE are to act. | 30:41
But, we have noted there's very little of us | 30:45
in this passage from Ephesians. | 30:47
This is mostly about God. | 30:49
Paul is singing about God has done for us. | 30:52
How God has chosen forgive, and redeem, | 30:56
and adopted us. | 30:58 | |
And I am saying that that's a problem for us | 31:01
modern, 'mother, I'd rather do it myself please' people. | 31:03
Because, many of us have come here this morning | 31:08
anxiously awaiting some word about what WE are to do. | 31:10
And we don't want to waste time singing | 31:14
songs about what God has done. | 31:16
There's a lot of atheism in the modern church. | 31:20
That is, there are too many sermons | 31:25
that spend too much time | 31:31
on us. | 31:33 | |
On our activity about what we are to do, | 31:35
or to think, or to be. | 31:37
How many times have I heard people say, | 31:40
"I like a sermon that tells me what I am supposed to do, | 31:43
that tells me where I have gone wrong, | 31:47
and where I can live a better life." | 31:49
Or we say, church. Church is where | 31:52
we go on Sunday morning and we learn | 31:54
how we can get right with God. | 31:56
Or somebody else says, "Church is a place | 31:59
where you know what you need to do to get saved." | 32:01
And of course, there is truth in that. | 32:08
But sometimes, how to live a better life, | 32:11
just becomes another self-help, human technique | 32:13
of secular therapy for human betterment. | 32:17
Some kind of political program to save the world. | 32:20
Sometimes getting saved can be a matter of I have done, | 32:25
or I have believed, or what I have chosen. | 32:29
And so the Church's message comes just one | 32:33
more petty list of suggestions for better living, | 32:36
helpful hints for homemakers, just one | 32:40
more means of setting ourselves up, | 32:43
getting us somewhere. | 32:45
But I'll have you know, that Paul mentions | 32:48
none of this. | 32:50 | |
The message he has is grand, it's large, | 32:53
it's cosmic. | 32:56 | |
He begins not with us, | 32:59
not with our anxious navel-gazing, | 33:01
not with our anxious, moral introspection | 33:03
and scanning of our egos, and our needs, | 33:07
and our striving, our moral temperature-taking. | 33:10
He begins with God, the creator of Heaven and Earth, | 33:14
who an amazing act of divine graciousness | 33:19
has chosen, adopted, forgiven, redeemed us. | 33:24
And maybe he's saying that's where we | 33:32
ought to begin too. | 33:34
With remembrance of what God has done. | 33:37
With recognition of how blessed we are in Christ. | 33:41
Before we launch into any exploration about what we | 33:48
are to do for God. | 33:51 | |
As John says, 'We love because God first loved us.' | 33:54
We bless God here on Sunday morning, | 34:00
because God has blessed us. | 34:02
Everything that we do as Christians flows from that. | 34:04
Any goodness we might achieve in this life | 34:09
is our humble way of just saying, "Thanks." | 34:12
Oh, but alas, so many times, | 34:18
church on Sunday mornings becomes a time | 34:21
where we come with our little moral notepads | 34:23
to get our homework for the week. | 34:25
Do this, don't do that. | 34:30
But this wonderfully exuberant shout of praise | 34:34
here in Paul's letter to the Ephesians | 34:38
reminds us, church really is as Kathleen Norris says, | 34:40
"the point is the praise." | 34:44
In praise, we get right down to the heart | 34:49
of what religious faith is. | 34:52
Our faith is not some anxious means for us to get | 34:55
somewhere with God. | 34:59
Rather praise reminds us that, the church is | 35:03
recognition of where God has gotten with us. | 35:07
Everything flows with that. | 35:13
Church, | 35:21 | |
is our time to sign, | 35:23
to signal, to witness to the advent of the kingdom | 35:25
a counter-cultural place where the prisoners | 35:29
are freed, and the poor and the wretched of the Earth | 35:32
are royalty, and all things are made new. | 35:35
And when we gather to praise God on Sunday morning, | 35:38
what our hope is that we'll get good enough | 35:40
at praising God on Sunday that we'll know how | 35:42
to praise God on Monday. | 35:45
The world too easily captures us. | 35:48
We've become blinded, we've become paralyzed | 35:51
by the givens, prisoners of the status quo. | 35:54
Rather than adventurers, pushing, always probing out | 35:58
into that great unknown space God is creating by his love. | 36:02
How tragic, that the business of too many modern | 36:07
churches is just that, business. | 36:10
The round of programs, and ceramics classes, | 36:14
and basketball games, and choir practices, | 36:18
and finance committee meetings keep us all | 36:20
breathless and fatigued as we bustle about, | 36:23
working and becoming better and better every day, | 36:27
in every way. | 36:30 | |
Keep people going to meetings rather than | 36:31
looking for the kingdom of God. | 36:34
Rather than being a sign, pointing to God's kingdom, | 36:36
we've become a roadblock constructed by a church | 36:40
which has forgotten how to throw a party. | 36:44
Alas, much of our worship is distinguished by it's | 36:47
dogged persistence rather than it's beauty. | 36:50
And there we sit morosely in our bolted down pews | 36:54
like people sitting next to one another on a bus. | 36:57
Few people therefore cut loose. | 37:00
Burst into song. | 37:03 | |
The philosopher Nietzsche spoke for many | 37:06
when he said, "You are going to have to look a lot | 37:08
more redeemed before I could believe in your redeemer." | 37:11
Oh but whenever the church does cut loose, | 37:19
in those moments when you found yourself, | 37:26
caught up, lost in wonder, love and praise, | 37:28
as the hymn puts it. | 37:32
This is our way of being in love, | 37:34
it's our way of witnessing to the world | 37:37
that there's a power let loose among us. | 37:39
To anyone who will listen, we proclaim, | 37:43
"Christ loved the church." Ephesians 5:23 | 37:46
And that's why we shout Hosanna, | 37:50
and that's why we get all worked up. | 37:53
His love explains, if reasons be needed, | 37:55
why are we here, why we sing. | 37:59
Some of you have heard me tell the story of | 38:04
visiting a friend of mine, | 38:06
at a brand new church his congregation had built | 38:09
in the inner city of a southern town, | 38:12
and he was showing me proudly around his | 38:17
multi-million dollar sanctuary, and it was beautiful. | 38:19
The stained glass windows, the great organ, | 38:23
the carpet, the beauty of this great sanctuary. | 38:26
And he was very proud of what his congregation | 38:30
had accomplished in this great building for God. | 38:33
And when we got through, I said to my friend, | 38:37
"You know, George, this is beautiful. | 38:40
And it's a wonderful church, building. | 38:44
But aren't you a little, don't you feel a little guilty | 38:48
building such a fine church in such a terribly | 38:52
poor neighborhood? | 38:55
Don't you feel kind of odd about building | 38:58
such a grand place of worship where there is | 39:01
so much poverty so close by?" | 39:03
And with that my friend George kind of stepped back | 39:07
and shook his head and laughed and said, | 39:09
"You white folks just can't stand for anybody | 39:14
to have a good time, can you?" | 39:17
Let me tell you one thing, | 39:22
if this neighborhood looks bad, | 39:24
if lives are being ruined in this neighborhood | 39:27
through poverty, | 39:29
this church exists to tell the world | 39:32
that's not the way God intended it to be. | 39:34
God didn't plan for ugliness for human lives, | 39:39
God planned for beauty. | 39:42
This church is here to sign, to signal, to witness | 39:44
to God's intention for humanity. | 39:51
And you know, | 40:00 | |
that your faith is at its' best | 40:03
at those moments | 40:06 | |
when you just sort of cut loose | 40:07
and something gets ahold of you | 40:09
and you soar forth with wings. | 40:11
Some utilitarian, pragmatic self-help person | 40:17
wandering around meets you on your way | 40:20
out of such an adventure and says, | 40:22
'Now what good does that do? What are you gonna do with | 40:24
that at the hardware store on Monday morning? | 40:27
How does that put bread on anybody's plate?' | 40:29
No, no, no, that's all quite beside the point now. | 40:31
The point is you've seen a vision. | 40:34
Something has grasped you, greater than yourself. | 40:36
For one glorious moment, you climbed out of yourself | 40:39
and your ego needs, and your selfish strivings, | 40:43
and you have soared. | 40:47
And you know it's right, right there. | 40:48
Is what it's all about. | 40:53
I remember one Easter, not too long ago, | 40:56
when one of you emerged from an Easter service | 40:59
in which we had rented timpani, | 41:02
and we brought in trumpets, and we had violins, | 41:04
and cellos, and 150 voice choir, | 41:07
and we had banners, and walked out and you said, | 41:10
'If I die right now, | 41:16
it's okay.' | 41:19 | |
It's that praise, that is the point. | 41:23
In a famous prayer, St. Augustine | 41:30
noted that despite all of our sin | 41:34
and human weaknesses, it does seem like | 41:37
God has implanted deep within each of our souls | 41:41
a need to praise. | 41:46 | |
Will you pray with me this prayer of St. Augustine? | 41:52
Great art thou O, Lord | 41:59
and greatly to be praised. | 42:02
Great is thy power, infinite is thy wisdom. | 42:05
Thou hast made in us a desire to praise thee. | 42:10
For we are part of thy creation. | 42:15
Though we bear mortality about us | 42:18
and carry evidence of our sin, | 42:20
still we desire to praise thee. | 42:22
We are only a small part of thy creation, | 42:26
and yet we desire to praise. | 42:30
Thou has prompted us, | 42:33
that we should delight to praise thee. | 42:36
For thou hast made us for thyself, | 42:39
and restless are our hearts | 42:43
until they rest in thee. | 42:46
Amen. | 42:52 | |
(organ music playing) | 43:00
(choir singing) | 43:47 | |
Woman | The Lord be with you. | 46:58 |
Congregation | And also with you. | 47:00 |
- | Let us pray, saying Lord in your mercy, | 47:01 |
hear our prayer. | 47:04 | |
You may be seated. | 47:05
O, eternal God, you have created us for yourself | 47:17
and for one another in a world of your own making. | 47:23
You are Lord above all Lords, | 47:28
and God above all Gods. | 47:31
Our Lord, and our God. | 47:34
As we bow before you, refresh our memories. | 47:37
Let us not forget where we are, | 47:42
whose we are, | 47:45 | |
or the purpose you have ordained for our gifts. | 47:47
Remind us that the land in which we dwell, | 47:52
wherever it be, is your land. | 47:55
That the people among whom we dwell, | 47:58
whoever they be, are your people. | 48:01
And that the gifts, with which we are endowed, | 48:05
whatever they be, are bestowed to make us one | 48:09
as we sing your praises, and in our service to one another. | 48:13
Almighty God, you have called us ever to be mindful | 48:20
of the needs of our sisters and brothers | 48:24
around the world. | 48:25
Thus, we offer these prayers in | 48:27
faithful response to your word. | 48:29
O, God of compassion, you watch the ways of all of us, | 48:32
and accompany us through our darkest days. | 48:36
Surround those who have been shaken by tragedy | 48:40
of any sort, with a sense of your present love | 48:43
and hold them in faith. | 48:47
Though they may be drowning in a sea of grief, | 48:50
may they find you, and be comforted. | 48:53
Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer. | 49:00
O, Lord Jesus Christ, help us always | 49:04
to remember that it is you whom we behold | 49:07
in the weakened bodies and haunting faces | 49:10
of the hungry of the world. | 49:13
Grant that we may not turn away, | 49:15
but rather that we may receive your blessing | 49:17
as we minister to the least of our sisters and brothers. | 49:20
Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer. | 49:24
O, God of peace, you have bound us together | 49:28
in a common life. | 49:31 | |
Help us in the midst of our struggles | 49:33
for justice and truth, | 49:35
to confront one another without hatred or bitterness, | 49:37
and to work together with mutual patience and respect | 49:41
for the good of the whole world. | 49:44
Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer. | 49:49
O, God of plenty, in the midst of our abundance, | 49:53
we recall our debt to those who garner our food for us, | 49:57
for migrant workers who gather the crops in the blazing sun, | 50:02
for those who tend livestock through all | 50:07
types of weather, | 50:09
for farmers who plow, sow, and cultivate | 50:11
and then wait in hopeful anticipation. | 50:15
Teach us that we live because of your | 50:18
abundant mercy, and the labor of others. | 50:20
Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer. | 50:25
All knowing God, show us the poor | 50:30
both those who have been pushed aside | 50:32
in the wake of competition, | 50:35
and those who are victims of the system they | 50:37
helped to build. | 50:39 | |
Show us that there is also a poverty of heart. | 50:41
When saving is more important than sharing. | 50:45
Help us to find security in sharing all our resources, | 50:48
and to discover the joy of giving. | 50:53
Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer. | 50:57
O, God of creation, in the course | 51:01
of our hectic lives, give us times of refreshment and peace. | 51:04
Grant that we may so use our leisure to rebuild | 51:09
our bodies, and renew our minds, | 51:13
that our spirits may be open to the goodness | 51:16
of your creation. | 51:19
Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer. | 51:21
O, merciful God, we pray for all those who travel | 51:26
that they may be preserved in safety to their | 51:30
journey's end. | 51:32 | |
Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer. | 51:35
O, sustaining God, you have blessed us with | 51:39
the joy and care of children. | 51:42
Grant us strength and wisdom as we bring them up, | 51:44
that we may teach them to love whatever is just, | 51:47
and true, and good. | 51:50
Following the example of our savior, Jesus Christ. | 51:52
Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer. | 51:57
Everlasting God, we pray for the sick and the afflicted, | 52:01
that they may be comforted and restored | 52:05
to fullness of life. | 52:07
When they are afraid, give them courage. | 52:09
When they are weary, strength. | 52:12
When they are in despair, hope. | 52:14
Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer. | 52:19
O, Lord, our redeemer, accept the fervent prayers | 52:23
of your people. | 52:27 | |
In the greatness of your mercy, | 52:28
look with compassion upon us, | 52:31
and all who turn to you for help. | 52:33
For You are gracious, O lover of souls. | 52:36
And to you we give glory, now and forever. | 52:39
Amen. | 52:44 | |
As we prepare to present our offerings of our life | 52:47
and our labor to the Lord, | 52:50
remember the words of Jesus, | 52:52
"Let your light so shine before people, | 52:55
that they may see your good works, | 52:57
and give glory to God in Heaven." | 52:59
(organ music playing) | 53:09
(choir singing) | 55:05 | |
- | O, God, giver of all good, | 1:01:09 |
who continually pours your benefits upon us, | 1:01:11
age after age, your people wait upon you, | 1:01:15
and find that of your faithfulness, | 1:01:18
there is no end, and that your care is unfailing for us. | 1:01:21
We praise you that the mystery of our life | 1:01:26
is a mystery of infinite goodness. | 1:01:29
We praise you for the order and | 1:01:32
constancy of nature. | 1:01:33
For the beauty and bounty of the Earth, | 1:01:35
for day and night, | 1:01:38
seed time and harvest. | 1:01:39
For the varied gifts of loveliness and use | 1:01:42
which every season brings. | 1:01:44
We give you thanks for all the surprising | 1:01:47
graces which come to us. | 1:01:49
For those that sustain our lives, | 1:01:51
and those that change them. | 1:01:53
For friends, old and new. | 1:01:55
For homes, which are places of redemptive love. | 1:01:58
For routine task which give order to our days, | 1:02:01
and which from time to time, | 1:02:05
restore a needed humility to us. | 1:02:07
Most especially, we thank you for your action | 1:02:10
in Christ, by which our lives are measured, | 1:02:12
found wanting, and renewed. | 1:02:16
Help us to remember your gifts, | 1:02:19
that we may praise you with lives of joy and service. | 1:02:21
These things we pray in the name of Jesus Christ, | 1:02:26
who taught us to pray with confidence. | 1:02:28
Our Father, who art in Heaven, | 1:02:31
hallowed be thy name. | 1:02:34
Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, | 1:02:36
on Earth as it is in Heaven. | 1:02:39
Give us this day, our daily bread, | 1:02:41
and forgive us our trespasses, | 1:02:44
as we forgive those who trespass against us. | 1:02:46
And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. | 1:02:49
For thine is the kingdom, the power, | 1:02:54
and the glory, forever. | 1:02:57
Amen. | 1:02:59 | |
(organ music playing) | 1:03:04
(choir singing) | 1:03:56
Now, may the grace of our Lord and Savior, | 1:08:02
Jesus Christ, and the love of God, | 1:08:04
and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit | 1:08:06
be with you now and always. | 1:08:08
(choir singing) | 1:08:13
(organ playing) | 1:08:30 |
