	then the head, then the full grain in the head.	22:38
	"But when the grain is ripe, at once he goes in	22:41

-	[Debra K. Brazzel] In Jesus's day, a mustard seed was	23:47
	proverbial for the smallest conceivable thing.	23:50
	Had he told this parable today,	23:55
	he might have used a different image,	23:56
	perhaps a subatomic particle.	23:58
	But in the time that the parable was first told,	24:01
	his audience would have understood that this was small,	24:04
	very small.	24:09
	The smallest possible thing.	24:10
	The kingdom of God was like this,	24:14
	like starting out with the smallest possible thing,	24:17
	the tiniest seed that you can imagine,	24:22
	and planting it and watching in wonder as it becomes	24:25
	the biggest possible shrub.	24:29
	It looks insignificant and trivial to begin with.	24:33
	There's no way that anyone would expect great things	24:36
	from such a small beginning.	24:40
	But it grows to be big, very big.	24:42
	More than eight feet tall	24:45
	so that it towers over all other shrubs.	24:47
	It grows so much that it spreads out with big branches	24:51
	and birds come and make their nests in its shade.	24:55
	In fact, birds love the little black seeds	24:59
	that cover it so much	25:02
	that they often hover over it as a cloud,	25:03
	finding nourishment and protection in its branches.	25:06
	There's nothing else quite like it.	25:11
	It starts with one tiny seed.	25:14
	But it holds within it the promise of greatness.	25:17
	That's what the kingdom of God is like.	25:21
	This parable was somewhat confusing	25:26
	for Jesus's Jewish listeners,	25:28
	for it was traditional in Judaism to compare	25:31
	the kingdom to a tree, not a shrub.	25:33
	Ezekial and Daniel described the powerful restoration	25:38
	of David's kingdom as a mighty cedar of Lebanon.	25:41
	Now anyone knows that a cedar is much greater than a shrub,	25:46
	even if it is the greatest shrub.	25:50
	In fact, when Luke told the same story in his gospel,	25:53
	he said the mustard seed grew up to become a tree.	25:58
	Matthew hedged a bit,	26:02
	and said it's a shrub that becomes a tree.	26:03
	But in Mark, Jesus said the kingdom of God is like	26:06
	a tiny seed, a mustard seed,	26:10
	that becomes a shrub,	26:14
	the greatest shrub, but a shrub nonetheless.	26:16
	He thereby confronted his listeners with their expectations	26:21
	about the kingdom of God.	26:25
	He distinguished between God's kingdom and the kingdom	26:27
	that Israel was looking for.	26:31
	They expected power and demonstration of God's might,	26:35
	but Jesus told them that the kingdom of God	26:38
	god planted through the lowly and the insignificant.	26:41
	It grew big enough and strong enough to do the important	26:46
	work of nurturing and sheltering others,	26:49
	but without a lot of fan fare and show.	26:52
	For the lowly and insignificant,	26:57
	this parable became a great parable of hope	26:59
	and encouragement about what God was doing in the world	27:02
	and in their lives.	27:06
	This parable about the mustard seed,	27:08
	the tiniest thing imaginable,	27:10
	becoming a mighty shrub capable of sheltering many	27:13
	reassured the disciples that even though Jesus	27:18
	hadn't used his power as they had expected	27:20
	to establish a political reign,	27:24
	that the kingdom of God would come through him	27:27
	and that their small, seemingly insignificant movement	27:31
	would have a role in that kingdom.	27:36
	It was also an encouraging parable to early Christians	27:40
	who were persecuted for their beliefs.	27:42
	Even though it might appear that they were defeated,	27:45
	these tiny seeds of faith, even through their deaths,	27:49
	scattered throughout the world to become mighty	27:54
	signs of God's kingdom,	27:57
	capable of nurturing many in the faith.	27:59
	The history of the Christian church is a testimony	28:03
	to the courage of this tiny band of believers	28:06
	and the mighty church that God	28:09
	was able to grow through them.	28:11
	And it is an encouraging parable for us individually	28:14
	and as a community of faith.	28:18
	It tells us that God is at work in the world,	28:21
	taking small, insignificant people and things	28:24
	and growing them up to become productive,	28:28
	important instruments of God's kingdom.	28:32
	It reminds us that maybe it's the small things	28:36
	and the insignificant beginnings that matter most,	28:39
	for the outcomes belong to God.	28:43
	It makes us wonder what small seeds of the kingdom of God	28:46
	are being planted in our lives?	28:51
	Perhaps the seed of faith is growing within us.	28:56
	Some of us attended church as a child,	29:00
	but drifted away in adulthood.	29:02
	Others never had a religious upbringing,	29:05
	but find ourselves searching for something greater	29:07
	than self to believe in.	29:10
	Dan Wakefield talks about this in his book,	29:14
	"Returning: A Spiritual Journey."	29:17
	Though he had been raised a Christian	29:20
	and had a strong spirituality as a child,	29:22
	he drifted away from the church and from any relationship	29:25
	to God as a young adult.	29:28
	Then through the trials of his adult life,	29:30
	he discovered within himself a growing desperation,	29:33
	a need to find something outside of himself to hang onto.	29:37
	In faltering, unsure steps, he made his way back to church.	29:43
	His occasional attendance grew to regular participation,	29:49
	and then to a hungering for a deeper relationship with God.	29:53
	This led him to Sunday School, and then to Bible Study,	29:57
	and then to a prayer group, and daily prayer,	30:01
	and finally to a Spiritual Director and spiritual retreats,	30:04
	and a genuine engagement with the life of the spirit.	30:09
	The seed of faith had been dormant within him for years,	30:13
	but as he became aware that he needed more from life	30:17
	than career and self,	30:21
	the seed began to take root and grow.	30:23
	The seed of faith can start very small,	30:28
	but it is nourished when we discover from within	30:32
	a hunger for God.	30:35
	We may be unsure how to proceed	30:37
	or even what it means to have faith,	30:40
	but the desire to know and be known by God	30:42
	is all that it takes.	30:46
	God can take this small beginning and nourish it	30:48
	and grow it until we have faith beyond measure.	30:52
	There are other seeds that get sown in God's kingdom,	30:58
	like the seed of forgiveness.	31:02
	I worked with a woman in counseling who was going through	31:06
	an extremely painful divorce.	31:08
	Her husband left her for a younger woman,	31:11
	and she felt bitter and angry about all the years	31:14
	that she had given to the marriage.	31:17
	She felt that she had given everything she had to give,	31:19
	and that there was nothing left for herself or anyone else.	31:22
	She couldn't think about starting over because she was	31:26
	in so much pain about the marriage.	31:30
	She relived scenes from her life together	31:32
	over and over until it began to disrupt her sleep.	31:36
	Her anger was legitimate,	31:41
	but it was hurting her more than anyone else.	31:44
	We discussed the need for her to begin to forgive	31:47
	her husband so that she could start the process	31:50
	of healing in her own life.	31:53
	He was moving on with his life,	31:56
	but hers was stuck in resentment and bitterness.	31:57
	Each time we met, we would pray for the gift of forgiveness	32:02
	to lift the veil of anger.	32:06
	In the beginning, the anger was all that she felt,	32:09
	but slowly she started to feel less bitter.	32:12
	She would forget her hurt for hours at a time,	32:15
	and then days at a time.	32:18
	And then one day the anger was gone.	32:21
	There was sadness about the divorce	32:24
	and the loss of the relationship,	32:27
	but there was no more anger, no more bitterness.	32:29
	The mustard seed had grown and forgiveness had blossomed.	32:33
	Perhaps God has sown the seed of forgiveness in us.	32:40
	We may know that we've been harboring a hurt	32:44
	for much too long,	32:46
	or we may be racked with guilt about some pain	32:48
	that we've caused someone else.	32:51
	God can nurture the smallest desire	32:54
	to give or receive forgiveness	32:57
	until it blooms in full force.	33:00
	Another seed that is sewn in the kingdom	33:05
	is the seed of love.	33:07
	When asked about the greatest commandment,	33:09
	Jesus responded, "Love the Lord your God	33:11
	"with all your heart, and all your mind,	33:14
	"and all your soul, and your neighbor as yourself."	33:15
	Love is at the heart of the kingdom of God.	33:20
	Our ability and desire to love may begin very small.	33:23
	We might start out by putting a few dollars	33:28
	in the collection plate.	33:30
	Then signing up for Habitat for Humanity work day.	33:32
	Then making a monthly pledge to the church.	33:37
	Then volunteering twice a month at the soup kitchen.	33:40
	The point is, the seed of love, once planted,	33:44
	moves us to ever greater acts of loving service.	33:47
	Giving our money can no longer take the place	33:51
	of our self giving.	33:54
	Occasional service projects no longer feel like enough.	33:55
	We start to look at people differently.	33:59
	We start to think about our role in the world differently.	34:02
	The seed of love can be dangerous to our	34:07
	well-laid plans and ambitions.	34:10
	I know a student who went on a couple of mission projects	34:14
	who's now living in the L'Arche Community	34:18
	for mentally handicapped,	34:20
	and another student who deferred a medical career	34:23
	to work at a community center in Washington D.C.,	34:25
	and a doctor who agreed to lead a medical mission team	34:29
	one time, but who is now coordinating a course	34:32
	on medical missions and a much larger	34:36
	medical center initiative.	34:39
	They didn't start out looking for big ways to love,	34:41
	but the seed of love got planted and it grew	34:44
	and they became lovers in the kingdom of God.	34:48
	Another seed that starts small but grows great	34:54
	in the kingdom is the seed of courage.	34:57
	Throughout the centuries, ordinary men and women	35:00
	of faith have shown extraordinary courage	35:03
	in the face of adversity.	35:06
	But none of them ever set out to be extraordinary.	35:08
	Dietrich Bonhoeffer, one of the great Christian witnesses	35:12
	during World War II didn't want to become a martyr.	35:15
	But he left the safety of exile in the United States	35:20
	to return to Germany because he said,	35:23
	"I shall have no right to participation in the	35:25
	"reconstruction of Christian life in Germany	35:28
	"after the war if I don't share in the trials	35:31
	"of my people now.	35:34
	"Christians in Germany will face the alternative of	35:36
	"either willing the defeat of their nation in order	35:39
	"that Christian civilization might survive,	35:42
	"or willing the destroying of our civilization.	35:45
	"I know which of those two alternatives I must choose,	35:52
	"but I can't make that choice in safety."	35:56
	Bonhoeffer never regretted his decision to return,	36:02
	not even in prison where he wrote prior to his death,	36:06
	"I'm sure of God's hand and guidance.	36:09
	"You must never doubt that I am thankful	36:13
	"and glad to go the way that I am being led."	36:16
	His courage was an inspiration to all with whom	36:20
	he came in contact,	36:22
	and continues to be a great witness to the world.	36:24
	Another woman of courage, Elvia Alvarado, was unlikely.	36:29
	She is an illiterate Honduran who would have been	36:34
	content to raise her children and tend the fields	36:36
	to provide food for her family,	36:39
	but the living conditions in Honduras were so difficult	36:41
	that she found herself pulled into the role of leadership.	36:44
	She was first recruited by the Catholic Church	36:48
	to organize women's groups to improve health and sanitation	36:51
	in the villages,	36:55
	but after many years, she and others began to ask questions	36:56
	about why their living conditions were so poor	36:59
	and never got any better.	37:03
	They began to seek ways to find comprehensive solutions	37:05
	to their problems.	37:09
	She became active organizing communities to work	37:10
	for land reform.	37:13
	She was disowned by the church,	37:15
	and persecuted by government authorities.	37:17
	She has been frequently arrested and sometimes tortured,	37:19
	and her life has often been threatened.	37:23
	And yet, she continues her work.	37:27
	In her book, "Don't Be Afraid Gringo",	37:29
	written from oral transcripts, she says,	37:32
	"I don't think God says go to church and pray all day	37:35
	"and everything will be fine.	37:38
	No, for me, God says go out and make the changes that	37:41
	need to be made, and I'll be there to help you."	37:46
	The seed of courage in Elvia has grown very strong indeed.	37:51
	Sometimes, we are called to take a stand	37:57
	on a difficult issue,	37:59
	and maybe something we would rather avoid.	38:01
	We don't have to start out doing anything heroic.	38:05
	One small act of faithfulness is all that is necessary,	38:09
	for as the seed of courage is planted in us,	38:13
	we will be strengthened, first to know what we ought to do,	38:16
	and second to have the courage to do it.	38:21
	As the seed of courage grows to fruition,	38:25
	then we become ever greater witnesses to God's kingdom.	38:28
	I've talked about just four small seeds that God plants	38:35
	to grow the kingdom within us:	38:39
	faith, forgiveness, love, and courage.	38:42
	Each of them may start small,	38:47
	a nagging thought, a desire, a tiny step.	38:50
	But God can use the smallest seed to grow us up	38:55
	into mighty witnesses to the kingdom of God.	38:59
	Perhaps other seeds not mentioned are being planted in you,	39:03
	like hope or healing or trust or obedience.	39:07
	The good news is that God does great things	39:12
	from small beginnings.	39:16
	Be encouraged wherever you see the seeds of the kingdom	39:18
	being sewn in you,	39:22
	for God can take you where you are and nurture you	39:24
	and grow you up to realize the seeds of the kingdom	39:27
	that are within you.	39:32
	And when you become the person that God envisions,	39:34
	you will be as a great mustard shrub that nurtures others	39:37
	and shelters them within your shade.	39:41
	And as a community of faith, we should also be encouraged	39:45
	that God doesn't sew just one seed, but many seeds.	39:49
	The kingdom of God gets planted in many people	39:53
	and many places.	39:56
	It isn't one might tree,	39:58
	but many shrubs grown up from small, insignificant,	40:00
	inconspicuous beginnings.	40:04
	From seeds, even as small as a mustard seed,	40:08
	the kingdom of God is sewn in you and in me,	40:11
	in Durham and Los Angeles,	40:15
	in the United States and Honduras and Africa.	40:18
	From millions of small, inconspicuous beginnings,	40:22
	the kingdom grows to be a mighty thing indeed.	40:27
	The seeds have been sewn.	40:31
	The kingdom of God is at hand.	40:33
