| And he tells all these satraps, prefects, | 27:01 | |
| governors, counselors, treasurers, | 27:03 | |
| and justices, and magistrates | 27:05 | |
| that he wants them to worship his golden statue. | 27:07 | |
| Whenever they hear the sound of the horn, | 27:12 | |
| the pipe, the lyre, the trigon, | 27:14 | |
| the harp, the drum, and the entire musical ensemble. | 27:16 | |
| Whenever they hear this musical ruckus, | 27:20 | |
| they are to fall to their little bureaucratic knees | 27:21 | |
| or immediately be thrown into a furnace | 27:25 | |
| of blazing fire. | 27:28 | |
| And all these satraps, prefects, governors, | 27:32 | |
| counselors, clerks, treasurers, | 27:35 | |

| played so well by the Department of the Faculty of Music, | 28:03 | |

| See, you thought that maybe we lived in a secular age, | 28:14 | |
| that maybe this was a secular campus | 28:17 | |
| where worship had fallen out of fashion, | 28:20 | |
| that only a minority on this secular place go to worship. | 28:23 | |

| We just love to bow the knee. | 28:37 | |
| It's like we're just born to worship something | 28:39 | |
| if given half a chance to worship anything. | 28:44 | |
| And I'm going to resist the urge to note | 28:48 | |
| the role musicians play in this story of pagan idolatry. | 28:51 | |
| And yet, I must say, there does seem to be | 28:57 | |
| some kind of connection being made | 28:59 | |
| here in this story from Daniel between idolatry, | 29:01 | |
| particularly idolatry to nations, and kings, | 29:05 | |

| and the way the king has been previously addressed. | 32:33 | |
| "O king, | 32:36 | |

| "be it known to you, O king, | 32:58 | |

| And Nebuchadnezzar went berserk. | 33:10 | |
| He not only ordered that Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego | 33:13 | |
| be thrown into the furnace, he ordered | 33:15 | |
| that the furnace be made seven times hotter than usual. | 33:18 | |
| It was so hot that the Judicial Board members | 33:20 | |
| who lifted the three young men into the furnace | 33:23 | |
| were incinerated instantly by the fire. | 33:25 | |
| And Nebuchadnezzar peered into that fiery furnace, | 33:28 | |
| and behold, he saw the three young men | 33:32 | |
| strolling around in the furnace. | 33:35 | |
| No, there were four. | 33:38 | |
| The young men had been joined in the furnace | 33:40 | |
| by a fourth figure, shadowy, unknown, | 33:43 | |
| leading them about through the fire. | 33:46 | |
| Everybody was amazed in Babylon. | 33:51 | |
| All the satraps, prefects, governors, | 33:53 | |
| counselors, clerks, deans, generals, | 33:55 | |
| they saw that not a hair was singed. | 33:58 | |
| They didn't even smell like smoke when they came out. | 34:00 | |
| Didn't my Lord deliver Daniel? | 34:04 | |
| Nebuchadnezzar was amazed. | 34:09 | |
| It had been so long since anybody had disobeyed | 34:12 | |
| or even questioned one of his royal decrees, | 34:15 | |
| particularly in the name of religion. | 34:19 | |
| But Nebuchadnezzar said, (sighing) | 34:23 | |
| your God must be some God. | 34:25 | |
| And in a marvelous show of royal generosity, | 34:30 | |
| he changed his first decree to read, | 34:34 | |
| "If anybody says anything against the God | 34:37 | |
| "of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, | 34:39 | |
| "they shall be torn limb from limb | 34:40 | |
| "and their house be pulled down." | 34:42 | |
| Which is about as close to generosity | 34:44 | |
| as Babylonian kings got. | 34:48 | |
| (congregation laughing) | 34:50 | |
| And the young Jews lived happily ever after | 34:51 | |
| until their next confrontation | 34:55 | |
| with the administration. | 34:58 | |
| Now, | 35:02 | |
| I know that part of you thinks that you are above a story, | 35:03 | |
| a playful, childlike story like this one. | 35:09 | |
| We are conditioned to believe that such bible stories | 35:15 | |
| are just a little too good to be true, | 35:17 | |
| products of overwrought primitive imagination. | 35:21 | |
| And I think we believe this in part | 35:26 | |
| because we are more familiar with stories | 35:27 | |
| of threatened, | 35:30 | |
| oppressed, young women and men, | 35:32 | |
| stories which end quite differently. | 35:36 | |
| Most of our stories of political oppression | 35:40 | |
| don't end with the condemned dancing | 35:43 | |
| through the flames untouched, | 35:45 | |
| with a king dramatically converted to our point of view, | 35:48 | |
| and those who were once condemned | 35:53 | |
| being delivered and given a royal promotion. | 35:57 | |
| Now, we know other stories, | 36:02 | |
| stories about those Haitian school girls | 36:04 | |
| who | 36:08 | |
| when they chanted the name of the ousted Aristide | 36:10 | |
| were mowed down by the bullets | 36:14 | |
| of the Haitian military. | 36:16 | |
| No God entered the fiery furnace | 36:20 | |
| with those little girls. | 36:24 | |
| We don't swallow stories of courageous young adults | 36:27 | |
| who buck the establishment and are vindicated | 36:30 | |
| because we know stories about other young adults | 36:35 | |
| like Hans and Sophie Scholl at the University of Munich. | 36:37 | |
| They were asked to sign a pledge. | 36:43 | |
| All the faculty signed a pledge to national socialism. | 36:44 | |
| And when they were told not to do any organizing | 36:49 | |
| or handing out of leaflets, Hans and Sophie Scholl | 36:51 | |
| appeared before the university administration | 36:54 | |
| and said, no, we will not bow down to that altar. | 36:57 | |
| And they were chastised, and they were released. | 37:03 | |
| And that afternoon, Sophie Scholl was on the streets | 37:05 | |
| at the University of Munich handing out her flyers, | 37:09 | |
| and four days later she was hung by the Nazis. | 37:11 | |
| So, what if the story of these | 37:19 | |
| three young men ended differently? | 37:21 | |
| Three young Jews dared to question the royal edict, | 37:26 | |
| and for their resistance, | 37:31 | |
| they were incinerated. | 37:34 | |
| But you already know that story. | 37:38 | |
| A crowd of Jews were huddled into the | 37:42 | |
| so-call camp shower at Auschwitz. | 37:44 | |
| And the guard, just following orders, | 37:47 | |
| took some cyanide pellets | 37:50 | |
| and dropped them down a little hole in the ceiling. | 37:52 | |
| And a few screaming, horrible moments later, | 37:57 | |
| it was over. | 38:01 | |
| The chapel choir | 38:04 | |
| walked the streets of Auschwitz last January, | 38:05 | |
| and we heard no story of a fourth figure | 38:10 | |
| walking in the gas chambers. | 38:13 | |
| You know that story. | 38:18 | |
| And the story of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego | 38:21 | |
| could have ended that way. | 38:24 | |
| Stories like that usually end that way. | 38:27 | |
| And what then? | 38:31 | |
| The power of the empire went head to head | 38:36 | |
| with the God of Israel, and Nebuchadnezzar, | 38:38 | |
| or Hitler, or Paul Potter, or Stalin, won. | 38:40 | |
| What then? | 38:44 | |
| What then? | 38:47 | |
| I think the three young men give answer. | 38:50 | |
| "If our God whom we serve is able to deliver us | 38:55 | |
| "from the furnace of blazing fire | 38:57 | |
| "and out of your hand, let him deliver us. | 39:00 | |

| You will note that the courage of these three young men | 39:44 | |
| is not based on some facile theological assertion | 39:46 | |
| that our God always delivers. | 39:50 | |
| Or that this God is always in the deliverance business, | 39:53 | |
| particularly for nice, Hebrew boys who obey the rules. | 39:57 | |

| Good things always happen to good people. | 40:08 | |

| But that's not what they say. | 40:14 | |
