| personified in Luke's gospel by the devil. | 30:08 | |
| Now the concept of the devil is somewhat difficult | 30:12 | |
| for us to accept, given our 20th Century worldview. | 30:15 | |
| We tend to picture the devil as a comic figure | 30:19 | |
| in red leotards with horns and a pitchfork, | 30:22 | |
| frequently seen on Saturday Night Live. | 30:25 | |
| It makes great comedy, but most of us don't take the idea | 30:29 | |
| of an evil being out to capture our souls very seriously. | 30:33 | |
| Yet the devil in the wilderness | 30:39 | |
| is the symbol of evil, | 30:43 | |
| and his attempts to tempt Jesus | 30:46 | |
| can be seen as part of the cosmic struggle | 30:48 | |
| between good and evil. | 30:52 | |
| The encounter in the wilderness | 30:54 | |
| may have been within Jesus' own mind and soul. | 30:56 | |
| But Jesus discovered that the power of evil | 31:01 | |
| is real and potent. | 31:03 | |
| It is a power against which every human being | 31:07 | |
| and even the Son of God must contend | 31:10 | |
| because we've been given the freedom | 31:14 | |
| to choose between good and evil. | 31:15 | |
| Jesus had not eaten a thing in 40 days | 31:20 | |
| and when they were over he was famished. | 31:23 | |
| The devil said to him, | 31:27 | |
| "If you are the Son of God, command this stone | 31:29 | |
| "to become a loaf of bread." | 31:33 | |
| What a subtle thing evil can be. | 31:37 | |
| After all, everyone must eat to survive. | 31:40 | |
| Surely the Son of God wasn't being asked to starve. | 31:45 | |
| Jesus was tempted to secure a legitimate end | 31:50 | |
| through illegitimate means, | 31:54 | |
| to use God's power to meet his own needs. | 31:57 | |
| But this temptation was not about | 32:01 | |
| Jesus' immediate need only. | 32:03 | |
| One of Israel's expectations for their Messiah was a leader | 32:07 | |
| who could turn stones into manna, someone like Moses. | 32:10 | |
| A leader who would provide a great banquet for Israel. | 32:16 | |
| By performing this sign Jesus could have proved | 32:20 | |
| his divinity and met the instinctive desire | 32:24 | |
| all people have for better conditions of life, | 32:28 | |
| for some relative abundance instead of poverty. | 32:32 | |
| He could have become and economic messiah, | 32:37 | |
| dedicated to improving their material conditions | 32:39 | |
| without doing anything to alleviate their spiritual poverty. | 32:43 | |
| The devil tried to appeal to Jesus' compassion. | 32:49 | |
| Jesus had experienced hunger first hand. | 32:53 | |
| And he knew how it forces one's attention | 32:57 | |
| to the immediate, material need. | 33:00 | |
| He knew that physical depravation | 33:03 | |
| often dulls the senses to the higher claims of life. | 33:05 | |
| Hunger is a genuine need, | 33:11 | |
| and God desires people to be fed. | 33:15 | |
| But it is not the most important thing. | 33:18 | |
| What they needed most was spiritual nourishment. | 33:22 | |
| Seek ye first the kingdom of God | 33:26 | |
| and all these things will be added unto you. | 33:29 | |
| Through this first temptation Jesus clarified | 33:34 | |
| that he could not be a messiah of economics. | 33:37 | |
| For Israel needed bread for its soul | 33:41 | |
| much more than bread for its body. | 33:44 | |
| He responded to the tempter, | 33:47 | |
| "It is written, one does not live by bread alone." | 33:50 | |
| But the devil doesn't give up easily. | 33:56 | |
| He next led him up and showed him | 33:59 | |
| all the kingdoms of the world in an instant. | 34:01 | |
| And the devil said to him, | 34:05 | |
| "To you I will give their glory and all this authority | 34:07 | |
| "for it has been given over to me | 34:12 | |
| "and I give it to whomever I please. | 34:14 | |
| "If you then will worship me it will all be yours." | 34:17 | |
| There were many in Israel who hoped that the messiah | 34:24 | |
| would come as a conqueror to deliver them | 34:27 | |
| from the oppression of Rome and bring them to world power. | 34:30 | |
| The devil offered Jesus world domination. | 34:35 | |
| Jesus never doubted the devil's ability | 34:41 | |
| to deliver this power because he knew | 34:44 | |
| that the temporal kingdoms are under the influence | 34:46 | |
| of the power of evil. | 34:50 | |
| The tempter offered Jesus the opportunity | 34:52 | |
| to be the messiah who would satisfy the patriotic passion | 34:55 | |
| of his people and bring Israel to world power. | 34:59 | |
| Many would try to make Jesus this kind of king | 35:04 | |
| but he understood that to accept power | 35:08 | |
| was to worship the one who gives power | 35:11 | |
| and all that he stands for. | 35:15 | |
| Jesus understood that power is always purchased at a cost. | 35:18 | |
| Jesus answered the tempter, | 35:26 | |
| "It is written, worship the God of Israel, | 35:29 | |
| "the Lord your God alone and serve only him." | 35:33 | |
| Rebuffed, but not beaten, | 35:39 | |
| the devil then tried to tempt Jesus a third time | 35:42 | |
| by taking him to Jerusalem and placing him | 35:46 | |
| on the pinnacle of the Temple. | 35:48 | |
| And saying to him, | 35:51 | |
| "If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down from here | 35:52 | |
| "for it is written, 'He will command his angels | 35:56 | |
| "'concerning you to protect you and on their hands | 35:59 | |
| "'they will bear you up | 36:03 | |
| "'so that you will not dash your foot against a stone.'" | 36:04 | |
| The devil changed tactics in this temptation. | 36:09 | |
| Jesus had consistently quoted Scripture | 36:13 | |
| as he sought to discern God's will and resist temptation. | 36:16 | |
| So this time the tempter also quoted Scripture | 36:20 | |
| to strengthen the appeal of his temptation. | 36:24 | |
| He was inviting Jesus to put God to the test, | 36:28 | |
| to make God act on his behalf | 36:32 | |
| and publicly demonstrate Jesus' divinity, | 36:35 | |
| to use God's power for his own glorification. | 36:39 | |
| The devil was tempting Jesus to put conditions on his faith. | 36:44 | |
| If you want me to obey you | 36:49 | |
| then you must prove yourself by protecting me. | 36:51 | |
| The lure of conditional faith is always strong. | 36:56 | |
| I'll believe as long as I prosper. | 37:00 | |
| If you want me to obey then give me what I want. | 37:04 | |
| Bad things never happen to good people. | 37:09 | |
| But Jesus knew that he wasn't given spiritual power | 37:14 | |
| for his own protection and glorification. | 37:17 | |
| To worship God was to trust God | 37:21 | |
| and leave the results in God's hands even unto death. | 37:25 | |
| Jesus answered Satan, | 37:32 | |
| "It is said, do not put the Lord your God to the test." | 37:35 | |
| When the devil had finished every test | 37:41 | |
| he departed from him until an opportune time. | 37:44 | |
| Would this end the temptations Jesus faced? | 37:48 | |
| No, these same temptations would be repeated | 37:52 | |
| throughout Jesus' ministry. | 37:55 | |
| He would have to reaffirm his determination | 37:57 | |
| not to let his concern for people's physical well-being | 38:00 | |
| divert him from a greater ministry to their empty souls. | 38:04 | |
| He would have to resist more than once | 38:08 | |
| the fierce pressure of nationalistic desire | 38:11 | |
| by those who wanted to take him by force and make him king, | 38:14 | |
| by those who wanted him to assume power, whatever the cost. | 38:18 | |
| And he would have to resist repeatedly, | 38:23 | |
| the temptation to save himself | 38:26 | |
| from pain, agony, and ultimately, death. | 38:28 | |
| So the struggle was not ended in the wilderness. | 38:34 | |
| But the essential victory was won. | 38:38 | |
| Jesus' decisions had been so deep | 38:41 | |
| and sure that they could not afterward | 38:44 | |
| be taken by surprise or shaken. | 38:46 | |
| So what difference does this make to us? | 38:51 | |
| We know that Jesus is the Messiah. | 38:55 | |
| We know that Jesus overcame temptations in the wilderness. | 38:58 | |
| After all, who would expect anything less | 39:03 | |
| from the Son of God. | 39:05 | |
| But what does this have to do with us? | 39:08 | |
| Wilderness experiences are not for Christ alone. | 39:13 | |
| Through this period of testing, | 39:18 | |
| Jesus came to understand who he was called to be, | 39:20 | |
| what he was called to do, | 39:24 | |
| and what he would give his life for. | 39:26 | |
| Sometimes it is also necessary for us to go with Christ | 39:30 | |
| into the wilderness | 39:36 | |
| to figure out what and who God is calling us to be. | 39:37 | |
| Sometimes we must withdraw into solitude and quiet | 39:43 | |
| to discern what is important | 39:49 | |
| and what we are willing to give our lives to. | 39:51 | |
| Lent is a time in the Christian year | 39:56 | |
| when we follow the spirit into the wilderness. | 39:59 | |
| Like Jesus' sojourn, it too is 40 days. | 40:03 | |
| It is a time when we prepare ourselves to die with Christ | 40:08 | |
| so that we might be raised with him. | 40:12 | |
| It is a time of reflection, when we strip away | 40:15 | |
| all that is extraneous in life so we can see | 40:19 | |
| and affirm the essentials. | 40:23 | |
| As Jesus was tested in the wilderness, | 40:26 | |
| so too we will be tested. | 40:29 | |
| In these times of testing God confronts us | 40:33 | |
| with decisions difficult to make | 40:35 | |
| and lets us hear the plausible voices of false alternatives | 40:39 | |
| in order that we may learn to discern the truth | 40:44 | |
| and commit ourselves in obedience to God. | 40:48 | |
| Like Jesus, we also must confront the reality of evil, | 40:53 | |
| not the devil in red tights | 40:58 | |
| but that reality which has a grip on human life and society. | 41:00 | |
| Lest any of us doubt the reality of the power of evil, | 41:06 | |
| turn on the evening news any day of the week. | 41:11 | |
| You'll see rape, murder, fraud, racism, starvation, and war, | 41:14 | |
| visible signs of evil's grip on our world. | 41:21 | |
| Ask the families of the victims of Jeffrey Dahmer. | 41:26 | |
| They don't doubt; they have suffered the effects of evil. | 41:30 | |
| Ask the prisoners of conscience who fill the world's jails. | 41:37 | |
| They know first hand what evil individuals and governments | 41:41 | |
| will practice to maintain power. | 41:45 | |
| Ask the grandmothers raising their children's children | 41:49 | |
| because the parents have been lost to drugs. | 41:53 | |
| They too have experienced evil's insidious seduction. | 41:57 | |
| Most of us prefer to deny the existence of evil, | 42:03 | |
| to close our eyes to the evidence around us, | 42:07 | |
| to turn away from its consequences, to minimize its power. | 42:11 | |
| After all, we've never been tempted | 42:16 | |
| by this kind of blatant evil. | 42:18 | |
| It has no hold on us. | 42:21 | |
| We aren't murderers, oppressors, addicts. | 42:23 | |
| The temptation to see ourselves as immune | 42:28 | |
| from evil's influence is strong. | 42:30 | |
| But whenever we deny evil, we give it power over us | 42:34 | |
| and participate in it through our silent complicity. | 42:39 | |
| This was not Jesus' way. | 42:45 | |
| Jesus didn't deny evil. | 42:48 | |
| Jesus confronted the devil, who symbolized the full power | 42:51 | |
| of evil, head on, and he was victorious over it | 42:56 | |
| because he trusted in God's power. | 43:01 | |
| When we are called into the wilderness | 43:05 | |
| during this Lenten season, we too must confront | 43:07 | |
| the reality of evil and its temptations in all its forms. | 43:10 | |
| Evil always appeals to us in ways that are most inviting. | 43:17 | |
| We must decide whether we will be seduced by its promise | 43:23 | |
| of material abundance, power, or self glorification. | 43:26 | |
| What will we worship? | 43:32 | |
| What will we give our lives to? | 43:34 | |
| Will we listen to the voices that promise prestige, | 43:38 | |
| success, human respect, | 43:42 | |
| pleasure, power, and influence? | 43:45 | |
| Or will we listen to God's word and God's promises? | 43:50 | |
| We must decide whether we will follow God's way | 43:56 | |
| or the way of the world. | 43:59 | |
| When Jesus went into the wilderness he didn't go alone, | 44:02 | |
| he was led by the spirit and he was sustained by the spirit | 44:08 | |
| during this time of testing | 44:13 | |
| and through all the trials of his life and death. | 44:15 | |
| Whenever he encountered evil in any form, | 44:19 | |
| he relied upon God's word and God's power | 44:22 | |
| to carry him through. | 44:26 | |
| Ultimately, he knew that the love of God and our obedience | 44:28 | |
| to God are all that matter in life. | 44:32 | |
| And with nothing more than faith, | 44:37 | |
| he conquered death and the power of evil. | 44:40 | |
| Jesus teaches us that when we are called | 44:44 | |
| into the wilderness, it is an opportunity to strip down | 44:47 | |
| until we are left with nothing but the essentials, | 44:52 | |
| God's word, God's spirit, and God's power. | 44:56 | |
