The first reading is taken from the Book of Job. | 8:10
Then Job answered the Lord | 8:16
I know that you can do all things | 8:19
and that no purpose of yours can be thwarted. | 8:22
Who is this that hides council without knowledge? | 8:27
Therefore, I have uttered what I did not understand, | 8:32

Here, and I will speak, I will question you | 8:44
and you declare to me I have heard of you | 8:49
by the hearing of the ear, but my now eye sees you, | 8:54
therefore I despise myself and repent in dust and ashes. | 9:00
This is the word of the Lord. | 9:08
Congregation | Thanks be to God. | 9:11 |
- | The second reading is from the letter of James. | 9:17 |
Come now, you who say today or tomorrow | 9:21
we will go to such and such a town | 9:26
and spend a year there doing business and making money. | 9:29
Yet, you do not even know what tomorrow will bring. | 9:35
What is your life? | 9:40 | |
For you are a mist that appears | 9:42

As it is, you boast in your arrogance. | 9:58
All such boasting is evil. | 10:03

and fails to do it commits sin. | 10:11
This is the word of the Lord. | 10:17

- | This reading is taken from the Gospel | 10:27 |
according to Saint Mark. | 10:29
John said to him teacher, we saw someone | 10:33
casting out demons in your name | 10:38
and we tried to stop him because he was not following us. | 10:42
But Jesus said do not stop him, | 10:47
for no one who does a deed of power in my name | 10:52
will be able soon afterward to speak evil of me. | 10:57
Whoever is not against is us for us, | 11:02
for truly I tell you whoever gives you | 11:07
a cup of water to drink because you bear the name of Christ | 11:10
will by no means lose the reward. | 11:15
If any of you put a stumbling block | 11:20
before one of these little ones who believe in me, | 11:23
it would be better for you if a great millstone | 11:28
were hung around your neck and you were thrown into the sea. | 11:32
If your hand causes you to stumble, cut it off. | 11:38
It is better for you to enter life maimed | 11:44
than to have two hands and to go to Hell, | 11:47
to the unquenchable fire. | 11:51
And if your foot causes you to stumble, cut it off. | 11:55
It is better for you to enter life lame | 12:00
than to have two feet and to be thrown into Hell. | 12:04
And if your eye causes you to stumble, tear it out. | 12:09

- | We're at a business meeting, | 13:10 |
the flip chart shows production schedules, | 13:13
cost estimates, profit projections, | 13:16
and descriptions of several promising locations | 13:20
for the new business venture. | 13:23
The board of directors has been discussing | 13:25
their marketing strategy for the past several hours | 13:27
and are finally at the point of agreeing. | 13:31
They're excited about the business plans that they've made | 13:34
and about their new venture, and they see great potential | 13:38
for success and a hefty profit for each of them. | 13:41
It's a common scene, IBM, AT&T, | 13:46
Glaxo, Duke University. | 13:50
But in this case, it is a Greco-Roman business meeting | 13:54
in the Far East in the Hellenistic world | 13:59
of the early Christians. | 14:02
It involved several well-respected church members | 14:04
who we may assume hold positions | 14:07
of leadership on the finance committee | 14:09
because of their business expertise. | 14:12
Their products were most likely wine or spices | 14:15
instead of phone systems or computers, | 14:19
but the process of business planning and profit projection | 14:22
is as old as human enterprise, and it is certainly | 14:25
something that each of us here this morning | 14:29
would have recognized. | 14:31
Admittedly, it was a primitive business meeting, | 14:33
and you MBA people or Economics majors | 14:36
would have certainly had things to teach them, | 14:40
but all of us are familiar with the process | 14:43
of engaging in business to make profit. | 14:46
After all, most of us have to make a living. | 14:48
It's a familiar scene, and a comfortable one | 14:52
for most of us because we're experts at planning. | 14:55
After all, we've learned how important it is. | 14:58
To take the right college prep courses, | 15:02
to make the right grades, to join the right clubs | 15:04
so that you can go to the right college | 15:08
and make the right grades and join the right clubs | 15:11
so you can get the right job and make the right salary | 15:15
and marry the right person and join the right clubs. | 15:19
Well, you know how it goes. | 15:23
But something happens that we don't expect. | 15:25
James walks into the meeting, looks around, | 15:30
gets the gist of what's happening | 15:35
and says come now, you who say today or tomorrow, | 15:36
we'll go to such and such a city and spend a year there | 15:41
and engage in business and make a profit, | 15:44
yet you do not know what your life will be like tomorrow. | 15:47
Well, just what is James saying? | 15:53
And why is he criticizing a perfectly | 15:56
legitimate business meeting? | 15:58
After all, we're not talking about shady dealings here, | 16:00
these are good Christians, they're church members. | 16:03
They're honest, ethical business people | 16:07
who seek to engage in a legal business practice | 16:11
to make a reasonable profit, so what's wrong with that? | 16:14
Was James saying that being in business is wrong? | 16:18
That it's sinful to set goals and plan ahead? | 16:22
That it's unacceptable to make a profit? | 16:26
Well, he certainly wouldn't have been admitted | 16:29
to Duke with that kind of attitude. | 16:31
But as we read on in the letter, he says what is your life? | 16:34
For you are a mist that appears | 16:40
for a little time and then vanishes. | 16:43
Now folks, this is frightening stuff. | 16:47
It has overtones of the hellfire, brimstone type sermon | 16:50
that threatens one with death and eternal damnation | 16:54
if one doesn't obey every dictate of God and the preacher. | 16:57
I'll never forget attending a Revival | 17:03
at my grandparents' church when I was a child. | 17:05
It was the Corinth Community Baptist Church, | 17:08
it was a little country church | 17:11
deep in the woods of north Louisiana, | 17:13
and it's where most of my relatives happen to be buried. | 17:15
As I set there between my parents, | 17:19
I just knew the preacher was looking straight at me | 17:21
as he said this may be the last chance | 17:26
you have to be saved, are you gonna let it pass you by? | 17:30
The Devil is out there waitin' for you | 17:37
just around the corner to snatch you up when you leave here | 17:39
and throw you into the pits of eternal damnation. | 17:43
Well I don't know if I got saved that night or not, | 17:48
but my parents had a heck of a time | 17:50
convincing me it was okay to get back in the car | 17:53
to go to Grandma's house because I just knew | 17:56
the Devil was out there waiting for me. | 17:58
Now is the author of James using scare tactics | 18:02
to try to frighten his readers | 18:07
into obedience to some moral dictates? | 18:09
Or is there something that he has to teach us | 18:13
about the business of life? | 18:17
He goes on, you ought to say if the Lord wills, | 18:19
we shall live and we shall do this or that. | 18:24
As it is, you boast in your arrogance | 18:27
and all such boasting is evil. | 18:30
James doesn't say business is evil | 18:34
or planning is evil, | 18:38
or even that making a profit is evil. | 18:41
It seems that the problem with our business meeting | 18:45
is that the board members have forgotten | 18:48
that they're not ultimately in control of life, | 18:51
and they have been boasting in their own powers | 18:54
and intelligence and planning abilities. | 18:57
Remember now, these are good church members | 19:00
he's speaking to who faithfully attend worship. | 19:03
They serve in positions of leadership in the church | 19:06
and they try to live good lives, | 19:09
but they have excluded God from their business transactions | 19:11
and made their plans as if they alone | 19:16
could bring them to fruition. | 19:19
They profess belief in Christ, | 19:21
but in actuality live as practical atheists. | 19:24
They plan their lives as if God doesn't exist, | 19:28
or at the very least as if God had no concern | 19:32
about how they lived day to day. | 19:35
Even worse, they brag about their abilities | 19:38
and plans as if they had the power | 19:41
to accomplish anything apart from God. | 19:44
James reminds them that life | 19:48
doesn't always go according to plan, | 19:52
that their lives are like the mists, | 19:56
vapors, puffs of smoke that appear | 19:59
for a little while, and then disappear. | 20:03
The insecurity of life stands in stark contrast | 20:07
to the secure rationality of their plans. | 20:12
But James reminds them that, in actuality, | 20:16
they don't know what their lives will be like tomorrow, | 20:20
or even if they will be alive. | 20:22
He tells them, instead you ought to say if the Lord wills, | 20:26
we shall live and we shall do this or that. | 20:29
To plan without acknowledging our absolute dependence | 20:33
upon God and without seeking God's will | 20:39
is not only foolish, but sinful, | 20:43
as we put ourselves in God's place. | 20:46
As James says in the letter, | 20:50
whoever knows what is right to do and fails to do it, | 20:52
for that person, it is sin. | 20:57
You see, our merchants knew that all life | 20:59
was created by God and belongs to God, | 21:02
remember these are church members, | 21:05
he's preaching to the choir. | 21:07
But they chose to act as if they were in control of life. | 21:09
James was condemning them because they, | 21:14
of all people, should know better. | 21:16
He was reminding them that apart from God, | 21:20
there is no security in life. | 21:23
In a Duke hospital room, a mother sits, | 21:29
silently weeping, at the bedside of her child. | 21:34
Anxiously awaiting every painful, | 21:38
rasping breath | 21:43 | |
as evidence that the child still clings to life. | 21:46
But the bleeding from a lung pierced by a stray bullet | 21:51
in a drive-by shooting just won't stop. | 21:55
At another bedside, | 22:02
a child sits holding her mother's hand | 22:05
as she slips in and out of consciousness | 22:08
while the tumor grows larger | 22:13
and her grasp on life weaker. | 22:16
A phone call in the middle of the night, | 22:20
a father awakened, startled, it's 3 o'clock a.m., | 22:23
heart pounding, gut wrenching fear, | 22:27
it must be some emergency. | 22:31
Are you the parent of? | 22:35
Your son has been in a driving accident, driving drunk. | 22:38
A Duke student goes in for a routine physical exam, | 22:46
just feeling a little tired, y'know, | 22:50
so many exams and staying up late. | 22:52
The doctor's report we'd like to do some additional tests, | 22:56
the signs indicate leukemia, | 23:02
but of course nothing's definite, yet. | 23:04
A hard-working businessman en route to another meeting, | 23:10
a diabetic seizure and a coma, | 23:15
losing control of the car as it plummets across the median. | 23:19
On the other side, a student, excited, | 23:23
returning to Duke for the fall semester, | 23:27
a PhD finally within his grasp. | 23:30
And suddenly, the car is there and there is no place to go, | 23:34
no time to react. | 23:39 | |
Lives not according to plan. | 23:44
These are not scare tactics, we see them daily | 23:50
and hear these stories nightly on the news, | 23:55
and our newspapers, in the hospital, | 23:58
in our own homes and families. | 24:01
Whenever we are faced with the unexpected or with tragedy, | 24:05
we are reminded uncomfortably of our own mortality. | 24:11
How desperately we try to deny or forget our finiteness | 24:15
and lack of control over life, | 24:21
obsessively planning every detail of our futures. | 24:23
It's easier to turn off the news | 24:28
or pretend that bad things only happen to other people, | 24:30
desperately hoping it won't happen to us | 24:35
until we come face to face with some circumstance | 24:39
or unexpected tragedy in life. | 24:44
How many of us here have already experienced | 24:48
some major disappointment or loss? | 24:52
How many of us have lives that have | 24:56
not turned out exactly according to plan? | 24:59
It's so easy to get caught up in our plans | 25:04
and puffed up about our futures, | 25:06
but whenever we encounter our lack of control | 25:09
over other people or over our own lives, | 25:13
we are reminded dramatically, though sometimes painfully, | 25:17
of our absolute dependence upon God. | 25:22
So where do we find meaning or hope | 25:27
in the midst of such uncertainty? | 25:30
How do we find the courage to face life | 25:32
given the reality of our own mortality? | 25:35
What plans for the future can we, or should we make | 25:39
when we have so little control over life? | 25:43
The mistake our board members made was planning without God. | 25:47
They gave God control over their Sunday behavior, | 25:52
but not their every day, weekday transactions. | 25:56
James reminded them and us | 26:00
that all of life is dependent upon God. | 26:03
God belongs in the boardroom, in the classroom, | 26:07
in the bedroom, in the living room. | 26:10
We know that life is created by God | 26:14
and belongs to God, again we are the choir, | 26:16
we are the church that are here. | 26:20
Yet, we have a hard time believing | 26:23
that God wants to be involved in its day to day operation. | 26:24
Ours is a God that has chosen to be involved | 26:30
with us in the most intimate way. | 26:34
God has taken on human existence | 26:39
in the person of Jesus Christ, | 26:43
and there is no part of life that God hasn't experienced, | 26:47
and there is nothing in life that is insignificant to God. | 26:53
This is the God that has even entered | 27:01
in to and overcome death for our sakes, | 27:04
as we will remember this morning | 27:08
as we celebrate Communion here in this place. | 27:10
Through Jesus Christ, our lives, | 27:15
as fleeting as they might be, | 27:18
take on eternal significance. | 27:20
When Christ is at the center of all our plans, | 27:24
then we need not fear the uncertainty of the future. | 27:29
For even in the midst of tragedy or death, | 27:34
we discover that Christ has gone before us, | 27:38
that Christ stands beside us, | 27:43
and that Christ is ahead of us preparing the way. | 27:47
Christ has died, Christ is risen, | 27:52
Christ will come again. | 27:58
And we can rejoice that there is nothing | 28:02
in life or death that can separate us | 28:06
from the love of God in Christ Jesus. | 28:11
Thanks be to God. | 28:16 | |
Preacher | The Lord be with you. | 28:31 |
All | And also with you. | 28:32 |
- | Let us pray. | 28:34 |
Loving God, every time we come to the table, | 28:39
to eat and to drink, we are reminded of how dependent, | 28:45
how utterly daily dependent we are upon your Grace. | 28:51
Now we plan and we set goals, | 29:00
but you hold our lives in the palm of your hand. | 29:04
Without you, we are nothing. | 29:09
And that is why we pray, | 29:14
setting the needs of suffering humanity | 29:17
before your loving heart. | 29:20
We pray for all those brothers and sisters | 29:24
who perish from too little to eat, | 29:29
for little children who go to bed | 29:33
every night with knowing hunger, | 29:35
and for those who have so much food | 29:40
that we fail to recognize what a great gift | 29:44
and responsibility is something | 29:46
so ordinary and necessary as bread. | 29:50
We pray for children around the world, | 29:57
the little ones whom you love so much, | 30:02
children whose vulnerability and poverty | 30:05
reminds us of our denial of our own. | 30:09
Particularly do we pray for the suffering children of Iraq, | 30:15
of Northern Ireland, Lebanon, | 30:20
Azerbaijan, | 30:25 | |
Serbia, | 30:28 | |
Croatia, | 30:30 | |
and the forgotten children of American's inner cities, | 30:34
and the overplanned, over program children | 30:39
of America's suburbs. | 30:42
We pray for those whose lives have been recently disrupted, | 30:48
whose plans have been set aside due to death, | 30:54
or the loss of a job, or a bad quiz grade, | 31:03
or children growing up, or friendship rejected. | 31:10
Be with them, oh God, | 31:17
