| Lead aprons, separate rooms, | 31:56 | |
| okay I'm ready to turn on the machine now. | 31:58 | |
| A year ago at baccalaureate I told about a conversation | 32:02 | |
| I had with a Duke sophomore. | 32:05 | |
| I had seen her on campus with a young man. | 32:07 | |
| I said, "Are you two dating?" | 32:11 | |
| No no no no, no we're not dating, | 32:12 | |

| Seeing each other, it sounds so Victorian, | 32:17 | |

| We're seeing each other. | 32:23 | |
| And I said to her, "What is this that your generation | 32:26 | |
| "seems so paranoid about commitment, | 32:28 | |
| "about putting your money down on somebody?" | 32:30 | |
| She said, "Yeah we were raised by your generation." | 32:34 | |
| (congregation laughs) | 32:37 | |
| And it's true, I figure about half of us here | 32:39 | |
| came from marriages that failed. | 32:42 | |
| Spouse abuse, elder abuse, | 32:47 | |
| it's all in the family. | 32:50 | |
| Any law enforcement officer would tell you, | 32:52 | |

| than a marital argument. | 32:59 | |
| I understand that more people are shot and killed | 33:02 | |
| in bedrooms than in bar rooms. | 33:04 | |
| The median age for marriage keeps rising, rising. | 33:09 | |
| And I think it's because many of you have seen people chewed | 33:13 | |
| up in the machinery of matrimony, | 33:17 | |
| you are cautious. | 33:21 | |
| It's tough, to be together. | 33:26 | |
| Now if you have been here for the past couple of Sundays, | 33:30 | |
| you know that we have been following the story | 33:32 | |
| of a family in a mess. | 33:35 | |
| Troubled family, our family, this is not The Brady Bunch, | 33:39 | |
| it's The Bible. | 33:43 | |
| It's a true story, | 33:45 | |
| if a not altogether inspiring one, | 33:47 | |
| this isn't Ozzie and Harriet, | 33:51 | |
| this is Isaac and Rebekah. | 33:55 | |
| Poor big dumb older brother Esau. | 33:58 | |
| And the conniving schemer, | 34:02 | |
| upstart little brother Jacob. | 34:06 | |
| While still in the womb, these two twins | 34:09 | |
| had such a struggle that they threw Rebekah | 34:11 | |
| into the first case of pre-partum depression. | 34:15 | |
| And when she delivered these twins, | 34:20 | |
| one came out of the womb, punching the other's heel, | 34:21 | |
| and so they called him Jacob, | 34:24 | |
| which means grabber or heel, | 34:25 | |
| either designation fit Jacob. | 34:28 | |
| And then we're told Mom loved Jacob, | 34:31 | |
| Dad loved Esau, | 34:34 | |
| these were not model parents. | 34:38 | |
| Jacob took advantage then of Esau during a weak moment. | 34:42 | |
| Most of Esau's moments were weak moments, | 34:46 | |
| and duped him out of his inheritance | 34:50 | |
| and then he followed that up | 34:52 | |
| by dressing up in his brother's hunting clothes, | 34:53 | |
| with his poor father dying, blind, | 34:55 | |
| and went to his bedside dressed up in his brothers clothes | 34:58 | |
| and he got the blessing, and then he got the entire | 35:02 | |
| inheritance that should have gone | 35:05 | |
| to his brother Esau. | 35:07 | |
| And Esau hated Jacob for it and said, | 35:10 | |
| "When Dad dies, | 35:14 | |
| "I'm going to kill that little trickster." | 35:15 | |
| Is this Dallas? | 35:21 | |
| Mom, who'd remember unashamedly loved Jacob more than Esau | 35:23 | |
| caught wind of Esau's plan, she warned Jacob | 35:27 | |
| and had him high tail it out of town, | 35:29 | |
| telling her dying husband that she decided | 35:32 | |
| it was a good time for Jacob to go back to Uncle Laban | 35:34 | |
| and find a nice girl of their religion and race to marry. | 35:38 | |
| If you've come here this morning looking for helpful hints | 35:42 | |
| for happy homemaking, you will not find it in this story. | 35:45 | |
| But on the other hand at least you cannot accuse The Bible | 35:49 | |
| of being naive, romantic, | 35:53 | |
| papering over harsh human reality with sweet cliches, | 35:57 | |
| the way we do. | 36:02 | |
| We're listening in on life in a family. | 36:06 | |
| And it's a mess. | 36:10 | |
| Love mixed up with violence, | 36:12 | |
| deceit, envy, popcorn by the fire trips to Disney World, | 36:17 | |
| everybody's sitting on the front row at church | 36:22 | |
| in coat and tie, it's a mess. | 36:24 | |
| To be in such a family, it gets risky. | 36:28 | |
| Can't we just get through one Christmas vacation | 36:34 | |
| without a big fight? | 36:37 | |
| Don't start on me, Rebekah. | 36:40 | |
| Well there haven't been too many family reunions, | 36:44 | |
| not too many meetings since Isaac died | 36:47 | |
| and Rebekah passed on. | 36:50 | |
| Since Jacob slipped out of town | 36:53 | |
| with his older brother threatening to slit his throat. | 36:55 | |
| "What about your younger brother," friends used to ask Esau, | 37:02 | |
| "You never mention him." | 37:05 | |
| "My little brother is a shyster, | 37:08 | |
| "I hate his guts." | 37:12 | |
| Friends change the conversation. | 37:15 | |
| "How come you'd never go home for Christmas holidays," | 37:19 | |
| they ask Jacob. | 37:22 | |
| And he never replied. | 37:25 | |
| Now it's now been 10 chapters in Genesis | 37:28 | |
| and many years and now toward the end of the story | 37:31 | |
| Jacob gets a surprising command of God to go back home | 37:35 | |
| and make peace with his brother. | 37:39 | |
| It is a perilous risky journey | 37:42 | |
| that Jacob embarks on. | 37:44 | |
| But aren't all reunions risky after division? | 37:48 | |
| Homecomings after alienation? | 37:53 | |
| With so many cruel words exchanged | 37:57 | |
| and so much difference, | 38:00 | |
| will there be a meeting? | 38:04 | |
| That's the story placed in, | 38:06 | |
| that's the word placed in our minds and the story. | 38:08 | |
| How many of you know what it's like | 38:12 | |
| to walk that path that Jacob walks today? | 38:13 | |
| I don't think it's a path that we walk very often. | 38:18 | |
| With good reason, 'cause there's such risk. | 38:22 | |
| In my experience, most marital couples who separate | 38:28 | |
| eventually divorce. | 38:33 | |
| Most brothers and sisters who split up in a squabble | 38:36 | |
| over the family inheritance, | 38:38 | |
| they stay that way. | 38:41 | |
| 20 years ago, her parents had said, | 38:45 | |
| "If you marry a man of that race, | 38:47 | |
| "don't you ever walk in this door again." | 38:49 | |
| 20 years later, she heard that her father | 38:53 | |
| was dying of cancer, she called home. | 38:55 | |
| "Dad, do you want me to come back home?" | 38:58 | |
| And he said, "No." | 39:03 | |
| It's risky, it's a perilous path to such a meeting. | 39:08 | |
| No wonder that many never make it. | 39:14 | |
| And we doubt that Jacob would even have tried it, | 39:17 | |
| had he not been ordered by God. | 39:21 | |
| He couldn't have walked ahead had not there been | 39:25 | |
| a cadre of angels escorting him, | 39:26 | |
| are they escorting him, | 39:28 | |
| or are these angels pushing him? | 39:30 | |
| I love these angels in that story. | 39:32 | |
| That cadre of angels walking with him. | 39:33 | |
| Angels or no angels, Jacob is scared. | 39:39 | |
| He sends messengers on ahead of him, | 39:43 | |
| and he says, "say, Esau, wait a minute," | 39:45 | |
| "say Lord Esau | 39:48 | |
| "if you will receive me, without blowing my head off, | 39:52 | |
| "there will be oxen, donkeys, male and female slaves | 39:55 | |
| "in the bargain," | 39:57 | |
| I don't think we've seen this stance from Jacob until now. | 40:00 | |
| What a contrast with that once haughty self-assured | 40:04 | |
| schemer, conniver. | 40:06 | |
| If I find favor in Lord Esau's eyes, | 40:11 | |
| receive me. | 40:15 | |
| And then in utter fear and desperation, Jacob prays, | 40:17 | |
| he prays, he prays the longest prayer | 40:21 | |
| in the long book of Genesis. | 40:23 | |
| Dear God, reconciliation remember was your idea. | 40:26 | |
| Save me from the hand of my brother, | 40:30 | |
| don't let him kill us all. | 40:32 | |
| Strange, isn't it? | 40:36 | |
| See Jacob, mister grabber, down on his knees | 40:38 | |
| begging and pleading with God like a baby. | 40:44 | |
| Besides, God, it was you who promised me, | 40:49 | |
| when you let down that ladder from Heaven | 40:53 | |
| to where I was sleeping. | 40:54 | |
| You promised to protect me, | 40:55 | |
| you promised to look after me, | 40:57 | |
| make a great people out of me. | 40:58 | |
| Ah yes, that sounds more | 41:01 | |
| like the old Jacob we know and love. | 41:03 | |
| Bargaining, pleading with God, holding God to account. | 41:05 | |
| He's begging one minute, | 41:09 | |
| he's bargaining the next. | 41:12 | |
| And this is so real, isn't it? | 41:15 | |
| I said these meetings are not without pain, they're messy. | 41:18 | |
| There's a dryness of the mouth, | 41:23 | |
| the sweating of the palms. | 41:25 | |
| No wonder we are usually content to stare at each other | 41:30 | |
| across these great chasms of race, our gender, | 41:34 | |
| our class, or politics. | 41:39 | |
| Though clearly commanded by God to make peace. | 41:44 | |
| (speaks in foreign language) | 41:47 | |
| Be reconciled. | 41:49 | |
| We don't risk many of these perilous meetings. | 41:50 | |
| Well here's the way we say it at Duke. | 41:55 | |
| We believe in multiculturalism, that means I got my culture | 41:59 | |
| and you got yours, stay out of mine, | 42:03 | |
| I'll stay out of yours. | 42:05 | |
| Good fences make good neighbors. | 42:07 | |
| A senior told me, just watch, freshman year, everybody | 42:11 | |
| first semester got your door open, | 42:16 | |
| everybody's in and out of rooms, | 42:18 | |
| all up and down the hall just one big happy family. | 42:20 | |
| But after rush, by second semester, | 42:25 | |
| the doors start to close. | 42:30 | |
| Until it's just me and my friends | 42:33 | |
| behind the locked door. | 42:35 | |
| It takes guts to come to such a meeting. | 42:40 | |
| And this escort of Heavenly angels with Jacob, | 42:45 | |
| I think signifies that this isn't just a family matter. | 42:48 | |
| No, God is mixed up in this. | 42:53 | |
| God's got a vested interest in this meeting. | 42:54 | |
| Homecoming I remind you, was God's idea, not Jacob's. | 42:59 | |
| Reconciliation is always a God's initiative and command, | 43:04 | |
| not ours. | 43:07 | |
| Meeting | 43:09 | |
| is the primary biblical agenda, | 43:12 | |
| and it is always God's meeting. | 43:16 | |
| And the presence of these angels I think suggest | 43:22 | |
| that God does not command | 43:26 | |
| what God does not enable us to do. | 43:29 | |
| So next day, Jacob sends on ahead of him 200 female goats | 43:35 | |
| 20 male goats, 200 ewes, 20 rams, 40 cows, 10 bulls. | 43:39 | |
| Some of you will have to explain | 43:44 | |
| this gender disproportion to me. | 43:46 | |
| And this is Jacob, I mean prayer is fine. | 43:50 | |
| It's fine, good, pray. | 43:52 | |
| But a few hundred goats and ewes will make reconciliation | 43:55 | |
| a bit easier for Esau to swallow. | 43:58 | |
| Jacob in a stunningly courageous act, | 44:03 | |
| even sends his wives and children on ahead of him, | 44:06 | |
| so if Esau is in a murderous mood | 44:10 | |
| the wives and children will find out about it first. | 44:12 | |
| Jacob prays, yeah but his motives, | 44:18 | |
| his tactics are still mixed. | 44:20 | |
| But Esau ran to meet him | 44:25 | |
| and he embraced him and they wept. | 44:30 | |
| Does that echo in your mind a later story, | 44:36 | |
| told by one of Jacob's progeny named Jesus, | 44:41 | |
| 15th chapter of Luke? | 44:45 | |
| There was a young son, younger son, just like Jacob. | 44:49 | |
| Just like Jacob wanted more than anything else | 44:52 | |
| his father's inheritance. | 44:55 | |
| His father gave it to him just like Jacob, | 44:56 | |
| he went out into the far country, | 44:58 | |
| he lost it. | 45:00 | |
| He comes back in rags starving. | 45:01 | |
| He has a little speech prepared for his father, | 45:03 | |
| but his father runs to meet him. | 45:06 | |
| And he embraces him. | 45:10 | |
| He falls upon him, he kisses him. | 45:12 | |
| He says, "My son, which was lost is now found, | 45:15 | |
| "which was dead is alive." | 45:19 | |
| Meeting. | 45:22 | |
| We're in a mess in our human family, | 45:25 | |
| we've done a better job historically of cutting | 45:28 | |
| our brother's throat rather than falling upon his neck | 45:30 | |
| and kissing him. | 45:33 | |
| Separated, alienated across great gaps | 45:35 | |
| of gender, race, | 45:39 | |
| economics, politics. | 45:42 | |
| Oh we blessed his diversity, | 45:45 | |
| but that's just another word for separation. | 45:48 | |
| And this old story dares to promise that God | 45:54 | |
| both commands | 45:58 | |
| and enables meeting. | 46:01 | |
| There is no gap so great, | 46:06 | |
| God cannot usher over that gap. | 46:07 | |
| While the story ends in a curious turn, | 46:13 | |
| as good old trusting Esau says to Jacob, | 46:17 | |
| "Now let's all put our things together | 46:19 | |
| "and we will now journey together." | 46:21 | |
| But Jacob begs often, says he's got something | 46:23 | |
| about nursing flocks he's got to attend to. | 46:26 | |
| And so we wonder after this dramatic meeting, | 46:31 | |
| wait a minute. | 46:33 | |
| Has Esau again been duped? | 46:35 | |
| Has Jacob really changed? | 46:39 | |
| Are they now back together or not? | 46:42 | |
| But that's the way it often is in families, or meeting. | 46:48 | |
| Among brothers, sisters, races, nations. | 46:53 | |
| It's a mess, it's always full of risk and peril | 46:57 | |
| and uncertain, there are no guarantees. | 47:00 | |
| Nothing is ever easy or too sure in life | 47:03 | |
| or in The Bible. | 47:09 | |
| But this old story promises. | 47:13 | |
| Even amid the mess, | 47:16 | |
| God both commands and enables | 47:19 | |
