	Our first reading comes from second Samuel	13:08
	the seventh chapter.	13:14
	Now when the king was settled in his house,	13:19
	and the lord had given him rest from all his enemies	13:23
	around him, the king said to the prophet Nathan,	13:26
	"See now, I am living in a house of cedar,	13:32
	but the Ark of God stays in a tent."	13:37
	Nathan said to the king, "Go, do all that you have in mind,	13:42
	for the lord is with you."	13:48
	But that same night, the word of the lord came to Nathan.	13:53
	"Go and tell my servant David," thus says the lord.	13:57
	"Are you the one to build me a house to live in?	14:03
	I have not lived in a house since the day	14:08
	I brought up the people of Israel from Egypt to this day,	14:10
	but I have been moving about in a tent and a tabernacle.	14:15
	Wherever I have moved about among all the people of Israel,	14:21
	did I ever speak a word with any	14:25
	of the tribal leaders of Israel	14:27
	whom I commanded to shepherd my people Israel,	14:30
	saying, 'Why have you not built me a house of cedar?'	14:33
	Now therefore, thus, you shall say to my servant David,	14:39
	'Thus says the Lord of Hosts, "I took you from the pasture,	14:44

	such as mortals use, with blows inflicted by human beings.	16:22

	In accordance with all these words,	16:54
	and with all this vision, Nathan spoke to David.	16:57

	of Paul's second letter to the Corinthians.	21:24
	It is necessary to boast.	21:31
	Nothing is to be gained by it, but I will go on	21:34
	to visions and revelations of the lord.	21:38
	I know a person in Christ who, 14 years ago,	21:43
	was caught up to the third heaven.	21:47
	Whether in the body or out of the body,	21:50
	I do not know, God knows.	21:53
	And I know that such a person, whether in the body	21:57
	or out of the body I do not know, God knows,	22:01
	was caught up into paradise and heard things	22:06
	that are not to be told, that no mortal	22:09
	is permitted to repeat.	22:13
	On behalf of such a one I will boast,	22:16
	but on my own behalf I will not boast,	22:21
	except of my weaknesses.	22:24
	But if I wish to boast, I will not be a fool.	22:28
	For I will be speaking the truth, but I refrain from it	22:34
	so that no one may think better of me	22:39
	than what is seen in me or heard from me,	22:42
	even considering the exceptional character	22:48
	of the revelations.	22:51
	Therefore, to keep me from being too elated,	22:55
	a thorn was given me in the flesh.	22:58
	A messenger of Satan to torment me,	23:01
	to keep me from being too elated.	23:05
	Three times I appealed to the lord about this,	23:08
	that it would leave me, but he said to me,	23:12
	"My grace is sufficient for you for power.	23:17
	For power is made perfect in weakness."	23:22
	So I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses,	23:27
	so that the power of Christ may dwell in me.	23:31
	Therefore, I am content with weaknesses, insults,	23:37
	hardships, persecutions, and calamities	23:42
	for the sake of Christ.	23:47
	For whenever I am weak, then I am strong.	23:50
	This is the word of the lord.	23:56

-	Our third reading is from the Gospel of Mark,	28:04
	the sixth chapter.	28:08
	He left that place and came to his home town,	28:11
	and his disciples followed him.	28:17
	On the Sabbath he began to teach in the synagogue	28:20
	and many who heard him were astounded.	28:25
	They said, "Where did this man get all this?	28:29
	What is this wisdom that has been given to him?	28:35
	What deeds of power are being done by his hands?	28:40
	Is not this the carpenter, the son of Mary and the brother	28:46
	of James and Joses and Judas and Simon?	28:52
	And are not his sisters here with us?"	29:00
	And they took offense at him.	29:04
	Then Jesus said to them, "Prophets are not without honor	29:08
	except in their home town and among their own kin	29:14
	and in their own house."	29:20
	And he could do no deed of power there,	29:23
	except that he laid his hands	29:26
	on a few sick people and cured them.	29:28
	And he was amazed at their unbelief.	29:33
	This is the word of the lord.	29:40

	Hmmm, Peppermint Patty is trying	30:02
	to answer a question on a test.	30:06
	The little girl in the desk behind her says,	30:10
	"Psst, what did you put on the third question?"	30:14
	Peppermint patty says, "Green."	30:20
	The little girl replies, "Green?	30:24
	But the question is how much is 15x7!"	30:27
	Peppermint Patty says, "I thought maybe	30:32
	it was a trick question."	30:36
	There are plenty of trick questions in this life,	30:40
	but so often we try to make the questions	30:45
	so much more difficult than they have to be.	30:49
	Take this one, for example.	30:54
	How is Jesus present	30:57
	in this world?	31:02
	A trick question?	31:05
	There isn't one of us here who wouldn't like	31:08
	to point to something spectacular, extraordinary,	31:13
	some tangible triumph	31:19
	of divine presence in our midst.	31:23
	We all know how we would like to answer the question.	31:28
	Imagine,	31:34
	if only Jesus would put in a personal appearance	31:36
	to a few of us,	31:42
	reverse poverty to prosperity,	31:45
	sickness to soundness,	31:49
	barrenness to birth.	31:53
	And on a larger scale, everyone would be impressed	31:58
	to see some mighty intervention that would turn	32:03
	hate into harmony,	32:08
	greed into generosity,	32:12
	conflict into compassion.	32:16
	It doesn't have to be anything too Hollywood	32:21
	or flamboyant, mind you.	32:25
	Maybe just a voice from the clouds	32:29
	over Washington DC,	32:33
	or a little walk on the water	32:36
	in the Persian Gulf,	32:41
	or a political leader here or there,	32:43
	converted or overturned.	32:48
	Face it, we all would prefer a lord	32:52
	who comes in the spectacular,	32:57
	the extraordinary, the triumphant.	33:00
	Mark the evangelist and Paul have something to say	33:06
	to us about our wishes, and their word	33:12
	is so simple it is disconcerting.	33:17
	It is this.	33:22
	Jesus' presence is concealed	33:25
	in the commonplace.	33:30
	Let's hear what Mark has to say.	33:34
	In the passages preceding this one about Jesus'	33:38
	return to his home town, Mark established	33:42
	Jesus' authority and teaching.	33:47
	His influence over the elements of calming the waves	33:50
	and the wind,	33:55
	his tangling and triumph over the demon	33:58
	in the man from Gerasa,	34:03
	and his power over death	34:06
	in the raising of Jairus's daughter.	34:09
	So when Jesus arrived at his home,	34:14
	we would expect the people to receive him,	34:18
	even celebrate the return of this wonder worker.	34:22
	Instead they rejected him,	34:28
	and we need to understand why.	34:32
	I can just hear those Nazarenes.	34:37
	"Does not this man cast out demons?	34:41
	Yes.	34:46
	Does he not have power over nature?	34:48
	Yes.	34:52
	Does he not even raise the dead?	34:54
	Oh, yes.	34:58
	Does he not teach with authority?	35:00
	Yes, but where does he get all this?	35:05
	What wisdom and power have been given to him?	35:09
	This man is a Nazarene, he is one of us.	35:16
	He is Mary's son,	35:22
	a carpenter with four brothers	35:26
	and several sisters."	35:30
	And that's the crux of the matter.	35:34
	As sharply as anywhere in the new testament,	35:39
	Mark presented Jesus	35:43
	in what one bible commentator calls,	35:46
	the scandal of particularity.	35:50
	Jesus was a person	35:55
	living under the conditions of time,	35:58
	place, and relationships,	36:02
	which we all know.	36:06
	And that ran counter	36:09
	to expectations of one who would,	36:12
	in spectacular display, deliver a nation.	36:15
	Who in extraordinary fashion	36:21
	would relieve oppression,	36:25
	one who would triumphantly	36:29
	free a people.	36:33
	In contrast,	36:37
	Jesus' presence was concealed	36:40
	in the commonplace, and that was a hindrance	36:44
	to the Nazarenes' belief.	36:50
	If we are permitted another glimpse of Jesus	36:54
	from Mark's gospel, the message is reinforced.	36:59
	On the mountaintop, Jesus was transfigured	37:05
	before the eyes of Peter and James and John.	37:09
	Taken by the moment, Peter wanted to	37:15
	capture it for all time.	37:19
	If it happened now, we'd go get the camcorder,	37:23
	but Peter proposed to build a booth	37:27
	and keep this transfiguration, and Jesus,	37:33
	safe for all time.	37:38
	However, staying on the mountaintop was not in Jesus' plans,	37:41
	and he led the disciples back down into the valley	37:47
	of day in and day out living,	37:52
	back to the commonplace	37:55
	where there were no clouds,	37:58
	no voices, no visions,	38:00
	but where they were to live and to work.	38:06
	We, like the Nazarenes and Peter,	38:13
	long for the tangible presence of Jesus,	38:18
	and especially in the spectacular,	38:22
	the extraordinary, the triumphant.	38:25
	One need only to witness pilgrimages	38:30
	of masses of people to a place like the Basilica	38:34
	of the Virgin of Guadalupe in Mexico City,	38:39
	or to talk to someone who has had a dramatic conversion,	38:44
	or an experience of a spiritual gift	38:49
	like healing or tongues, to know how	38:54
	the extraordinary appeals to us.	38:58
	But the temptation is to cling to those expectations	39:02
	or experiences, and to fail to see Jesus	39:07
	in the scandal of particularity	39:14
	in our own time,	39:18
	place, and relationships.	39:21
	The commonplace of our own lives.	39:25
	If the Nazarenes misunderstood this,	39:31
	the Corinthians to whom Paul addressed his letter	39:36
	were even more misguided.	39:41
	Paul was concerned about how Jesus' presence	39:46
	was being interpreted by the Corinthian christians.	39:51
	It seems that that surly bunch in Corinth	39:58
	questioned Paul's influence and leadership.	40:03
	From what we can gather it appears that Paul's critics,	40:08
	allegedly Christian missionaries and community leaders,	40:14
	found it necessary to authenticate their ministry	40:21
	with such things as reports about signs and wonders,	40:27
	visions and revelations, and other demonstrations	40:32
	of the powerful presence of Jesus Christ in their lives.	40:37
	I can hear it now, a case of	40:42
	spiritual one-upmanship run rampant.	40:46
	The more spectacular, the better.	40:51
	Now Paul, on other occasions, had addressed the foolishness	40:57
	of this line of argument, and he had chastised	41:00
	the Corinthians for attempting to authenticate	41:04
	their ministry with boasting about how Jesus	41:08
	had been made manifest to them.	41:13
	But this time around, Paul had had enough,	41:17
	and he conceded to playing the game	41:21
	on the Corinthian turf.	41:24
	And what an array of visions and revelations	41:27
	Paul paraded before his detractors.	41:33
	He knew it was wrong to boast.	41:38
	He even referred to the experiences	41:42
	as though they had happened to someone else,	41:45
	but there is little doubt that he was talking about himself	41:49
	caught up in the third heaven,	41:54
	taken up into paradise,	41:57
	hearing voices	42:01
	of things that were not to be told,	42:04
	that no mortal was permitted to repeat.	42:08
	The interesting turn is that	42:16
	Paul placed little importance	42:19
	in the revelations as an occasion for boasting,	42:22
	or even for authenticating his ministry.	42:26
	He argued that more is often made of such matters	42:32
	than they deserve,	42:36
	and often they lead to exaggeration.	42:39
	Sure, Paul had his share of revelations.	42:44
	As a matter of fact, he had an abundance of them.	42:50
	But he also contended daily	42:55
	with a thorn in his flesh.	42:59
	It was through this, the thorn, whatever it was,	43:04
	and scholars have spilled volumes of ink over it.	43:09
	It was this	43:15
	that gave Paul his most keenly	43:18
	and profoundly interpreted	43:22
	experience of Jesus Christ.	43:27
	Concealed in the commonplace,	43:33
	a thorn in the flesh.	43:39
	And there was the grace	43:42
	and the power of Jesus Christ.	43:45
	This revelation from the lord, more than all of his other	43:49
	visions and revelations, provided Paul with the key	43:53
	for interpreting his own experience.	43:57
	What he knew only too well	44:01
	was that this experience	44:04
	and others like it,	44:09
	weaknesses, insults, hardships,	44:11
	persecutions, calamities,	44:16
	were far more frequent	44:20
	and typical of his life of discipleship	44:23
	than were visions and revelations.	44:27
	And what is more,	44:33
	this thorny revelation	44:36
	placed him in more direct touch	44:39
	with the experience and presence of Jesus Christ.	44:44
	A thorn,	44:51
	circumstance of the commonplace.	44:54
	And in it, Jesus is concealed.	45:00
	It is true for us as well.	45:08
	Two students talk about how they have never	45:13
	lived through a war	45:17
	in which the United States is involved.	45:20
	They recount experiences of sleepless nights	45:24
	and churning stomachs, and in the turmoil	45:29
	Christ is calling them to action.	45:35
	And it is in that turmoil that is born concern	45:40
	for the Kurdish people,	45:46
	and a relief effort takes shape.	45:49
	Jesus, concealed in the commonplace.	45:56
	At a nursing home in upper Bucks county, Pennsylvania,	46:04
	an elderly man arrives at noon daily	46:11
	in a threadbare tie and suit.	46:17
	He carries in a flower,	46:22
	a single piece of candy,	46:25
	or a handmade card.	46:28
	He goes into a room	46:32
	where a woman lies,	46:35
	not knowing time or place.	46:39
	Every day the man sits	46:45
	and reads the same Psalm,	46:49
	and as the woman's agitation dissolves,	46:53
	the man offers prayers of thanksgiving	46:58
	for their 50+ years of marriage.	47:03
	Jesus, concealed in the commonplace.	47:09
	It does happen over and over again.	47:16
	Mistakes in relationships that memories won't relinquish	47:22
	make us more committed to be honest and compassionate	47:27
	when given a second chance.	47:32
	Physical impairments	47:36
	push some to new horizons	47:39
	of patience, understanding, and dedication.	47:42
	A disappointment presents new opportunities	47:49
	for us to stretch the limits to which we will forgive	47:55
	and care for another.	47:58
	Failure in a task	48:03
	forces us to face our limitations	48:06
	and to focus on integrity and courage	48:10
	and the true source of our strength.	48:16
	And a success, a success	48:21
	brings forth rejoicing.	48:24
	And love born recklessly	48:28
	in strange places	48:32
	and wondrous ways.	48:35
	There is Jesus,	48:39
	concealed in the commonplace.	48:44
	How is Jesus present in this world?	48:50
	It is not a trick question,	48:57
	and the answer is not green.	49:01
	Jesus' presence is concealed	49:05
	in the commonplace.	49:10
	We need only to have eyes to see it,	49:13
	ears to hear it,	49:18
	and faith to discern it.	49:22
	Unto God,	49:27
	ascribe all majesty and power,	49:30
	glory, and dominion now and forevermore.	49:33
	World without end, amen.	49:38

	O god of all, help us to find strength and confidence	52:39
	in the knowledge that wherever we are,	52:45
	there shall you be also.	52:48
	Whether we reside in the palace of a king	52:51
	or the house of a carpenter, the mansion	52:54
	of a president or the dwelling of a tenant,	52:58
	ours is your dwelling place.	53:02
	Remind us that whether we labor in the business place	53:06
	or the assembly line of a factory,	53:09
	in the classroom of a school or the ward in the hospital,	53:12
	ours is your workplace.	53:17
	Give us your assurance that even if our home	53:21
	is the street and the doors of the workplace	53:24
	are barred to us, you make your dwelling with us.	53:26
	Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.	53:31
	Help us to rely with confidence upon your love,	53:36
	for you have proven your loyalty to us again and again.	53:40
	Yours is a loyalty that surpasses	53:45
	the greatest love we have ever known.	53:47
	It is a loyalty that persists through all terrors,	53:50
	survives despite all betrayals,	53:55
	and endures for all generations.	53:58
	Greater love has no one than this,	54:02
	that you have laid down your love for the life of the world.	54:05
	We thank you for loving us so much.	54:11
	Teach us to love others as you have loved us.	54:15
	Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.	54:19
	O God, let your loyalty to us arouse in us a commitment	54:24
	to envision more, to do more, to be more.	54:28
	And not more only, but more for you.	54:33
	Give us the courage to surrender to you our weakness,	54:39
	that you might make it our strength.	54:43
	Grant us the humility to yield to you our power,	54:46
	that you might fill it with grace.	54:51
	And endow us with the confidence to submit to you our will,	54:54
	that you might adapt it to your purpose.	54:59
	Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.	55:02
	Just as Jesus was rejected by those who thought	55:08
	they knew him best, our commitment to you	55:11
	shall render us unknown, shall make us strangers	55:14
	among many who once knew us.	55:18
	They will remember us in old rules	55:21
	with old habits and old limitations.	55:24
	The more we envision the kingdom,	55:28
	the more they will call us back to the real world.	55:30
	The more we do the work of the kingdom,	55:34
	the more resistance they will offer,	55:36
	and the more they will long for the persons we once were.	55:39
	Help us to understand that our identity and mission	55:43
	must not depend on the acceptance of others,	55:47
	and that its success or failure	55:50
	cannot be measured in human terms.	55:52
	Help us to rely upon your guidance and rest in the knowledge	55:56
	that wherever we are, there shall you be also.	56:00
	Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.	56:05
	As you send us forth from this place	56:10
	into our commonplace lives, we pray that you will use us	56:13
	as instruments of you peace and your will.	56:18
	Help us to see the need and the opportunities	56:22
	for service all around us.	56:25
	Remind us that when we look into the eyes	56:28
	of the abandoned child, the homeless person,	56:30
	the person suffering from illness,	56:34
	the destitute and despairing in our world,	56:37
	we are indeed looking into your eyes.	56:41
	Help us to respond to their need by serving as vessels	56:45
	for your healing presence in our world,	56:49
	for in you the sick are made well	56:53
	and the weak are made strong.	56:56
	Teach us to rest with confidence in your love.	56:59
