through the radio audience. | 3:13
Our preacher this morning is the reverend John Wall, | 3:16
the chaplain to Roman Catholic students | 3:20
at the university. | 3:22
A priest of the diocese of Raleigh, Father Wall took over | 3:24
the Newman center campus ministry three years ago | 3:28
and has been instrumental in making the ministry | 3:31
one of the most active and vital on campus. | 3:34
We welcome Father Wall to the pulpit today | 3:37
and look forward with eagerness to the message he brings. | 3:40
Now, let us continue with our worship of almighty God. | 3:45

Let us pray. | 8:31 | |
Oh God, who has prepared for those, who love you | 8:34
such good things, that they pass human understanding. | 8:37
Pour into our hearts such love toward you, | 8:42
that we loving you above all things may obtain | 8:46
your promises, which exceed all that we can desire. | 8:49
Through Jesus Christ, our Lord, amen. | 8:53
- | Let us pray. | 9:06 |
Open our hearts and minds, oh God by the power | 9:08
of your holy spirit, so that as the word is read | 9:13
and proclaimed, we might hear with joy | 9:17
what you say to us this day, amen. | 9:20
The first lesson is taken from the book of Ezekiel. | 9:26
Thus says the Lord God, I myself will take a sprig | 9:30
from the lofty top of the cedar and will set it out. | 9:35
I will break off from the topmost of its young twigs | 9:40
a tender one and myself will plant it upon a high | 9:43
and lofty mountain. | 9:47
On the mountain height of Israel will I plant it. | 9:49
That it may bring forth bows and bear fruit | 9:52
and become a noble cedar. | 9:56
And under it will dwell all kinds of beasts, | 9:58
in the shade of its branches birds of every sort will nest. | 10:02
And all the trees of the field shall know, | 10:07
that I, the Lord, being low the high tree | 10:09
and make high the low tree, dry up the green tree | 10:13
and make the dry tree flourish. | 10:18
I, the Lord, have spoken and I will do it. | 10:21
This ends the reading of the first lesson. | 10:25
- | Will you stand and join me in reading responsibly | 10:37 |
song number 46, number 570 in the back of hymnals. | 10:40
God is our refuge and strength. | 10:51
Therefore we will not fear, that the earth should change. | 10:57
Though it's warders roar and foam. | 11:05
There is a city, who's streams make glad the city of God. | 11:11
God is in the midst of her, she shall not be moved. | 11:19
The nation's rage, the kingdom's totter. | 11:26
The Lord of host is with us. | 11:33
Come, behold the works of the Lord. | 11:39
He makes wars seize to the end of the earth. | 11:45
Be still and know, that I am God. | 11:55
The Lord of host is with us. | 12:03
(organ music) | 12:10 | |
(choir singing) | 12:19 | |
- | The second lesson is take from Paul's second letter | 13:16 |
to the Corinthians. | 13:20
So we are always of good courage, we know, | 13:23
that while we are at home in the body, | 13:26
we are away from the Lord, for we walk by faith, | 13:29
not by sight. | 13:33 | |
We are of good courage and we would rather be away | 13:35
from the body and at home with the Lord. | 13:38
So whether we are at home or away, we make it our aim | 13:42
to please him, for we must all appear before the judgment | 13:45
seat of Christ, so that each one may receive good or evil | 13:50
according to what he has done in the body. | 13:55
This ends the reading of the second lesson. | 13:59
(choir singing) | 14:23 | |
- | The following is a reading from the holy gospel | 17:40 |
according to Mark. | 17:42
Jesus said to the crowd | 17:47
this is how it is with the reign of God. | 17:51
A person scatters seed on the ground, they go to bed | 17:56
and get up the day after, and day after that. | 17:59
And through it all, the seed sprouts and grows | 18:03
without their knowing how it happens. | 18:06
The soil produces of itself first the blade, then the ear, | 18:10
finally the ripe wheat in the ear. | 18:14
When the crop is ready, they wield a sickle | 18:18
for the time is ripe for the harvest. | 18:22
Jesus went on to say, what comparison shall we use | 18:26
for the reign of God? | 18:30
What image will help to present it? | 18:34
It is like mustard seed, which when planted in the soil | 18:38
is the smallest of all the earth's seeds. | 18:42
Yet once it is sown, springs up to the largest of shrubs. | 18:47
With branches big enough for the birds of the sky | 18:53
to build nests in its shade. | 18:56
By means of many such parables, Jesus taught them | 19:00
the message in a way, that they could understand. | 19:03
To them, he spoke only by way of parable | 19:07
while he kept explaining things privately to his disciples. | 19:11
This is the gospel, the good news of the Lord. | 19:17
It's a distinct joy for me to be with you this morning. | 19:29
Although as Catholic chaplain at Duke I've conducted | 19:34
many services here in this chapel, | 19:37
this is my first opportunity to mount these steps | 19:41
and preach at the 11 o'clock service on Sunday. | 19:46
Whenever I think of preaching in a church as large as this, | 19:52
with its beauty and its size, | 19:55
I'm reminded of one of the preachers of years gone by | 19:59
over in Europe, Lagardere, who preached in many | 20:04
of the cathedrals of Europe. | 20:09
With such magnificent words, they inspired all those, | 20:13
who gathered and people would line up to hear him. | 20:17
Story has it, and I think it's a bit exaggerated, | 20:22
that on one Sunday he spoke of Noah and the flood. | 20:26
His words were so strong and convincing | 20:33
and people had the flood presented to them so vividly, | 20:37
that they starting standing on the pews to keep their feet | 20:42
from getting wet. | 20:45
I promise you, this morning I'm not going to talk | 20:49
about the flood. | 20:53 | |
Years ago, Lagardere had magnificent churches of Europe, | 20:57
today we're gathered in this magnificent church in America. | 21:02
This church, that symbolized the temple of God, | 21:07
namely his presence among us. | 21:12
Here we are gathered from across the nation | 21:17
and from other nations as well. | 21:20
Our music, our readings, our voices, all proclaim, | 21:24
that God is not only in his heaven, | 21:28
but here in our midst | 21:32
and that we are truly his people, his family. | 21:36
Today's readings from Ezekiel, Paul to the Corinthians | 21:43
and the gospel according to Mark challenge us to ponder | 21:49
the reign of God, the kingdom of God. | 21:54
But where is this kingdom of God? | 22:02
As children, we often think of anything, | 22:08
that is truly good as coming. | 22:11
I remember my days as young North Carolinian | 22:16
from Greensborough vacationing with my grandmother | 22:19
in Wisconsin. | 22:23 | |
The fourth of July was coming. | 22:26
There would be fireworks, a parade, cotton candy | 22:30
and all that would be good. | 22:36
I recall mowing a yard knowing, that soon I would have | 22:41
a dollar in my pocket and I could go to the local | 22:45
A&W root beer stand and that would be good. | 22:48
I know there are people here this morning, | 22:55
who yesterday thought, that tomorrow, being Sunday, | 22:57
they would be in Duke chapel and they thought | 23:01
of the marvelous, magnificent organ, listening | 23:06
to a most professional choir and that would be good. | 23:09
But now, that we are here, we're thinking of the events | 23:16
of the afternoon: a delightful brunch, | 23:20
visits with friends, | 23:25
a drive to the lake and that would be good. | 23:27
We always seem to be looking for the good as coming, | 23:32
as over there, as beyond. | 23:38
And often we fail to see | 23:44
and relish, and experience the good | 23:47
as being here and now. | 23:53
The readings of today's service tell us God | 23:58
is always with us, | 24:02
that God is here, now, | 24:06
present and active among us, continually alive. | 24:11
We do not need to only talk of heaven as coming, | 24:19
but the kingdom of God is actually in our midst. | 24:24
If only we have the faith and take the time to look for it. | 24:32
In short, our heaven has already begun | 24:40
and will be realized more fully later. | 24:46
Those of us, who have been so gifted by God | 24:52
with the light of faith and have allowed ourselves | 24:55
to see God, the Father, to recognize the Son | 24:59
and be filled with the Spirit, through baptism, | 25:04
have received a new life. | 25:09
Jesus says, I have come, that you may have life | 25:13
and have it more abundantly. | 25:19
This new life, the presence of the divine, is not only | 25:23
where we one day wish to be, | 25:29
but it is where we are now, | 25:32
by faith and love, in union with the trinity | 25:36
and one another. | 25:41 | |
But you may say, yes, I've received that life in seed form, | 25:45
but it's only a seed and honestly I have not seen | 25:50
the growth in my life, nor have I experienced it personally | 25:53
in the lives of others. | 25:59
I know it's there, but that seems about it. | 26:01
Recently I read the story of a handful of wheat, | 26:09
that was found by archeologists | 26:13
in a 5000 year old tomb | 26:17
of an ancient Egyptian monarch. | 26:20
You can well imagine how that huge tomb was built, | 26:25
by the back breaking labor, under the hot desert sun, | 26:30
all in an effort to make one's life immortal. | 26:35
Today hardly anyone knows the monarch's name, | 26:41
that was lost in the 5000 years of recorded history | 26:45
between the day of his burial and the present. | 26:51
Yet there was a sign of life that continued | 26:56
between then and now. | 27:00
The archeologists found, that some wheat seeds | 27:04
were found in the tomb, possibly placed there by a workman | 27:07
shortly before the tomb was closed. | 27:13
It was these seeds, that held a promise of life, | 27:18
however long the time, they simply waited | 27:24
patiently in secret for the right time, | 27:28
the right condition to release the life | 27:33
that was within them, yet dormant for some 5000 years. | 27:37
After the archeologists had planted them, | 27:46
at the right time, in the right place, | 27:50
they rooted themselves and pushed their way | 27:54
into the sunlight rewarding their trusting archeologist | 27:57
sowers with a harvest that was truly wonderful. | 28:02
The archeologists who planted the seeds showed their trust | 28:10
in a belief in the endurance of life. | 28:15
They didn't put those seemingly dead seeds in a museum, | 28:20
rather they planted them and allowed them to grow. | 28:25
The same kind of faith we see today in our first lesson | 28:30
from Ezekiel, the 17th chapter. | 28:37
Here, Ezekiel sees beyond the Babylonian exile | 28:41
to the return of his people to the land of Judah. | 28:45
In the fourth chapter of Mark we heard Jesus seeing | 28:52
a group of simple followers, | 28:56
whose faith in the kingdom of God | 29:00
would someday transform the world. | 29:03
That seed of their faith would grow to what we see here | 29:09
this morning, ourselves, gathered, | 29:13
proclaiming God's presence among us. | 29:19
Making his kingdom come in Durham, | 29:23
June 1988. | 29:28 | |
The beauty of the kingdom of God is that it is so diverse. | 29:32
God's seedlings are not all the same, | 29:38
nor can they be perceived as acting in the same way. | 29:41
Let us listen again to the words of Jesus | 29:46
in the fourth chapter of Mark's gospel. | 29:50
What comparison can we use for the reign of God? | 29:54
What image will help to present it? | 29:59
It's like a mustard seed, which when planted in the soil | 30:03
is the smallest of all the earth's seeds, | 30:08
yet once it is sown, springs up to become | 30:12
the largest of the shrubs. | 30:16
With branches big enough for the birds of the air | 30:19
to build nests in its shade. | 30:24
For many of us baptism was the great sign of the beginning | 30:28
of our growth in faith. For many here this morning, | 30:32
that seed of faith has grown to the point | 30:37
where we have grained strength in crisis. | 30:40
It has shown itself as mature by our willingness | 30:45
to give ourselves in hours of service to family | 30:49
and neighbors and church. | 30:54
It has shown itself in our prayer life, | 30:57
that now overflows into action. | 31:01
Our faith life, the faith life of our community, | 31:06
has taken root and is coming alive like a plant | 31:10
coming to full stature. | 31:15
We can see it all around us here this morning. | 31:18
We can see it in the faces of those gathered. | 31:22
Teachers, engineers, secretaries, | 31:26
TV technicians, health professionals, | 31:32
the retired, all diligently working | 31:35
to build up the kingdom. | 31:39
Many of us would say, yes, Mr. Reagan and Mr. Gorbachev, | 31:43
they're trying to build a better world, but as for myself, | 31:49
I haven't thought of myself as doing just that, | 31:54
I don't perceive any change is coming from what I do. | 31:59
Listen again to the words of our blessed Lord | 32:05
in Mark's gospel. | 32:08
Now this is how it is with the reign of God. | 32:11
A person scatters seed on the ground | 32:15
and then goes off to bed, getting up day after day. | 32:17
And through it all, the seeds sprout without their knowing | 32:22
how it happens. | 32:26 | |
The soil produces of itself first the blade, then the ear | 32:28
and finally the ripe wheat in the ear. | 32:32
The kingdom that you and I are building is often | 32:38
not that perceptible, but it is there and can be seen | 32:41
through faith. | 32:47 | |
It is envisioned in the lives of your coworkers, | 32:49
families and friends, whose lives are different, | 32:54
because of the love, that you have for them. | 32:58
It is in this world, that is becoming a better place, | 33:04
because you're concerned about social and ecological issues. | 33:07
It is slowly visible in your associates and family, | 33:13
who are beginning to mirror your values. | 33:18
For many of us today who are gathered here, | 33:25
this seed of faith has not grown to its potential, | 33:28
as we would like. | 33:33 | |
It's like the wheat seed in the Egyptian monarch's tomb. | 33:35
It's been kept undercover, dark and hidden. | 33:40
Not exposed to the light of service, | 33:46
nor kept in an environment such as the church, | 33:50
where its roots can be nourished. | 33:53
It's been endangered by being exposed to a climate, | 33:55
that is lacking in true love. | 33:59
And has become placed in a very cold environment. | 34:03
A climate, that will surely hinder its growth. | 34:08
Yet, just as the case of the wheat seeds | 34:13
and the Egyptian tomb, there is nothing to prevent | 34:15
these seeds from growth in the proper place | 34:18
with the proper nourishment. | 34:22
The archeologists made the decision regarding the wheat. | 34:25
You and I, more than anyone else, will make the decision | 34:29
regarding the growth with God's help of our faith. | 34:34
How beautiful this day in Durham. How wonderful to be alive | 34:41
as a friend of mine says, in God's world. | 34:47
The rich diversity of nature continues acting out | 34:50
its inherent potential, grass, the flowers, the trees, | 34:55
the cool climate we experience this morning. | 35:01
The blue sky, all reflecting the rich diversity | 35:04
of the kingdom of earth. | 35:08
Look at the diversity of the seeds, that produce the rose, | 35:11
the lily and the red cedar tree. | 35:16
God allows each to come forth according to their nature. | 35:20
It is said that true artist do the same | 35:24
with the materials they work with. | 35:26
They don't impose themselves on their stone, | 35:28
or their ivory that they're working with, | 35:34
rather the true artist allows the inherent beauty of each | 35:37
to come forth alive from within itself, one might say. | 35:42
Michelangelo looked long and hard for the tremendous piece | 35:48
of Carrara marble, that he would be able to work with | 35:52
to produce the Pieta. | 35:56
It's almost as if the artist does not feel | 35:59
that the form has to be created, | 36:03
it was there from the beginning. | 36:06
Michelangelo summed it up in one of his famous sonnets. | 36:09
The best of artists has that thought alone | 36:14
which is contained within the marble shell. | 36:18
The sculptor's hand can only break the spell | 36:23
to free the figures slumbering in the stone. | 36:28
With God's grace, this faith of ours can grow | 36:33
to produce, as Jesus says, one of the largest shrubs. | 36:37
Truly then, we can become significant world leaders. | 36:42
We can become loving and forgiving parents. | 36:48
We can become those dedicated nurses and doctors, | 36:54
those business persons respected for their ethical standards | 36:58
and social responsibility. | 37:03
Yet, yes, let this environment we're experiencing today, | 37:06
the weather, this beautiful temple of God | 37:11
in which we are to find ourselves. | 37:15
The choir, the music, that all make our hearts and minds | 37:17
rejoice in saying, truly, the kingdom of God is here. | 37:21
And I'm building up that kingdom. | 37:27
Yes, Lord God, we truly say with Jesus, | 37:32
thy kingdom come, thy will be done, | 37:37
on earth as it is in heaven. | 37:41
(organ music) | 37:54 | |
(choir music) | 38:25 | |
- | The Lord be with you. | 41:26 |
Audience | And also with you. | 41:27 |
- | Let us pray. | 41:29 |
Father, we are your children. | 41:40
Your spirit lives in us and we are in your spirit, hear us | 41:43
for it is your spirit, who speaks through us as we pray. | 41:49
Almighty God, you created the heavens and earth. | 41:55
Bless the produce of our land and the works of our hands. | 42:00
You created the human family in your own image, | 42:06
teach us to honor you in our brothers and sisters. | 42:10
Redeeming Lord, you inspired the prophets of old. | 42:15
Grant, that we, your church may faithfully proclaim | 42:19
your truth to the world. | 42:23
You sent your son into the world, reveal him to others | 42:27
through his life in us. | 42:32
Lord Jesus, for your sake, men and women forsook | 42:36
all and followed you. | 42:40
We pray, that you will call many to serve you | 42:43
in religious communities and in the ordained ministry | 42:45
of your church. | 42:49 | |
You called men and women to be your disciples | 42:51
and each of us, Lord, deep in a sense of vocation. | 42:55
And you prayed, that your church might be one | 43:00
and we pray, that you will unite all Christians, | 43:05
so that the world may believe you have sent us. | 43:08
You forgave the thief on the cross, we pray, | 43:13
that you will bring to all penitence and reconciliation. | 43:17
And you gave to us your peace. | 43:22
We pray, that you will bring the people of this world | 43:25
to live in true community and concord. | 43:28
You cured by your healing touch and word. | 43:33
We pray, that you will heal the sick | 43:38
and bless all, who minister to them. | 43:40
You were unjustly condemned by Pontius Pilate. | 43:45
We pray, that you will strengthen our brothers and sisters, | 43:49
who are suffering injustice and persecution. | 43:52
You have been glorified in the lives of countless saints, | 43:57
give us strength through their prayers | 44:01
to follow in their footsteps. | 44:04
Loving God, we know, that you are good and that you hear | 44:08
all those, who call upon you. | 44:11
Give to us and to each person what is best, | 44:14
so that we may glorify you through your son Jesus Christ | 44:18
our Lord, who is alive and reigns with you | 44:21
and the holy spirit, one God, now and forever, amen. | 44:24
With joyous and grateful hearts, let us now offer ourselves | 44:34
and our gifts to God. | 44:39

Almighty God, father of all mercies, we, your servants, | 51:21
to give you must humble and hearty thanks | 51:25
for all your goodness and loving kindness to us. | 51:28
We bless you for our creation, preservation | 51:32
and all the blessings of this life. | 51:35
But above all, for the inestimable love | 51:38
and the redemption of the world by our Lord Jesus Christ. | 51:40
We beseech you give us that du-sense of all your mercies, | 51:44
that our hearts may be truly thankful and that we may | 51:48
show forth your praise, not only with our lips | 51:52
but with our lives. | 51:55
To you | 51:58 | |
be honor and glory now and forever, world without end | 52:00
and with the confidence of children we pray. | 52:06
Our father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, | 52:10
thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on the earth, | 52:15
as it is in heaven and give us this day our daily bread | 52:20
and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those, | 52:24
who trespass against us. | 52:28
And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil, | 52:30
for thine is the kingdom and the power, | 52:35
and the glory forever, amen. | 52:38

And now go forth into the world to be seeds | 57:12
of God's kingdom alive and at work. | 57:15
And may the grace of our lord Jesus Christ, | 57:19
the love of God and the encouragement of the holy spirit | 57:22
be with you now and always, amen. | 57:25
