- | The holy gospel of our Lord, Jesus Christ, | 11:26 |
according to Saint Matthew. | 11:28
All | Glory be to thee, O Lord. | 11:31 |
- | Jesus left the temple and was going away | 11:35 |
when his disciples came to point out to him, | 11:38
the buildings of the temple. | 11:41
But he answered them, | 11:43
"You see all these, do you not, | 11:45
truly I say to you, there will not be left here | 11:48
one stone upon another that will not be thrown down." | 11:51
As he sat on the Mount of Olives, | 11:57
the disciples came to him privately saying, | 11:59
"Tell us, when will this be and what will be the sign | 12:03
of your coming and of the close of the age?" | 12:08
And Jesus answered them, | 12:12
"Take he that no one leads you astray, | 12:14
for many will come in my name saying, | 12:18
'I am the Christ' | 12:21 | |
and they will lead many astray. | 12:23
And you will hear of wars and rumors of wars. | 12:26
See that you are not alarmed for this must take place, | 12:29
but the end is not yet. | 12:34
For nation will rise against nation, | 12:36
and kingdom against kingdom. | 12:39
And there will be famines and earthquakes in various places. | 12:42
All this is but the beginning of the birth pains. | 12:46
Then they will deliver you up to tribulation , | 12:50
and put you to death. | 12:53
And you will be hated by all nations for my name's sake. | 12:55
And then many will fall away and betray one another, | 13:00
and hate one another. | 13:05
And many false prophets will arise and lead many astray. | 13:07
And because wickedness is multiplied, | 13:11
most men's love will grow cold. | 13:14
But he who endures to the end will be saved. | 13:18
And this gospel of the kingdom will be preached | 13:22
throughout the whole world as a testimony to all nations. | 13:25
And then the end will come." | 13:30
The gospel of the Lord. | 13:33
Congregation | Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ. | 13:36 |
- | In the name of God, father, son, and Holy Spirit, amen. | 13:39 |
I would like to tell you a story this morning. | 14:04
It is a story about a little boy whose name is Richard. | 14:09
And it is a story that comes from an Episcopal church | 14:14
in Huntsville, Alabama. | 14:19
Richard was a member of the second grade class | 14:24
at St. Thomas Church. | 14:28
He got along relatively well with the members of his class. | 14:32
The other boys and girls liked him and appreciated him. | 14:38
But there was one thing that was different about Richard. | 14:43
He was retarded. | 14:47 | |
And so there were times when the teachers and the other boys | 14:51
and girls had to wait for him to catch up. | 14:54
But he always managed to keep up with them | 14:59
even if he was a little slow. | 15:01
On this particular Sunday, | 15:07
a lot of work had gone into the plans for this class. | 15:10
You see it was Easter, and the teachers wanted | 15:15
to especially celebrate that day in a special way | 15:17
with their boys and girls. | 15:21
They thought and thought about what they could do. | 15:25
Should they retell the beautiful Easter story again | 15:30
for the boys and girls? | 15:33
Should they simply reflect with the class | 15:35
on what the day already meant to them? | 15:37
Should they have an Easter egg hunt and a party? | 15:41
All of these things went through the minds of the teachers | 15:47
as they tried to decide what would be the best way | 15:50
to spend that hour with their students. | 15:54
Finally, after a much thought and prayer, | 16:01
the decision was made to do something a little different. | 16:04
The teachers gathered enough of the plastic containers | 16:08
that legs ladies hose come in | 16:10
so that every member of the class could have one. | 16:14
These were different colors | 16:18
and shaped very much like Easter eggs, | 16:20
except that they were of course | 16:23
larger than most Easter eggs. | 16:24
Each boy and girl was asked to go out into the church yard | 16:28
to get something that represented that day to them. | 16:32
St. Thomas Church was in a large wooded plot | 16:38
where there were many exciting natural possibilities. | 16:41
Very quickly all of the boys and girls scattered, | 16:47
including Richard to find that special item | 16:51
for that special day. | 16:56
After about 30 minutes, one by one, | 17:00
each of the boys and girls began to return | 17:03
to share what he or she had found. | 17:05
Each one came into the class, holding proudly his egg | 17:10
with his secret inside. | 17:13
Each seemed so poor least and could not wait | 17:17
to show and tell its contents. | 17:19
One by one, each second grader opened his container | 17:24
and displayed what was inside. | 17:28
Some of them told why the contents were especially important | 17:32
on this Easter Day. | 17:35
Some others had items that were unexplainable, | 17:37
only that they were important to the finder. | 17:40
There was a butterfly and there were flowers. | 17:44
there was a rock, and there was a pine cone. | 17:48
One by one, each boy and girl displayed his Easter symbol. | 17:53
And finally, it was time for Richard to open his egg. | 18:01
When he did the teachers cried inside | 18:07
because Richard's egg was empty. | 18:10
Oh, Richard did not understand the exercise. | 18:15
Oh, Richard did not have enough time to find something. | 18:19
Oh, Richard needed more of their help, | 18:23
and they had been insensitive to his need. | 18:24
But then Richard spoke. | 18:30
Very quietly and hesitantly he said, | 18:33
"He is not here, He has risen." | 18:41
"He is not here, He has risen." | 18:49
And the teachers realized that Richard had perhaps | 18:54
better understood the meaning of Easter Day, | 18:57
and how that day and every Sunday | 18:59
speaks to the lives of those of us as we live them each day. | 19:02
A year later Richard got very sick. | 19:10
As a matter of fact there seemed to be little | 19:14
that anyone could do for him | 19:16
And he died. | 19:19 | |
But somehow in all of the sadness that surrounded his death, | 19:22
there was also great joy for what he had contributed | 19:26
to the lives of so many people in his brief nine years. | 19:30
Richard's class was asked to sit together | 19:37
at his funeral at St. Thomas Church. | 19:39
This seemed to be rather hard to some people, | 19:43
but most of the boys and girls wanted to be there. | 19:47
And it was a joyous celebration of the life, | 19:51
death and resurrection of a little boy. | 19:56
And at the end of the celebration, | 20:03
each of the members of his church school class | 20:07
went up to the altar and placed there now empty | 20:11
Easter eggs there. | 20:16
St. Paul says in the eighth chapter | 20:25
of his letter to the Romans, | 20:27
"We are God's children, and if children then heirs." | 20:30
We see God's heirs and Christ fellow heirs | 20:38
if we share his sufferings now | 20:42
in order to share his splendor hereafter. | 20:45
For I reckon that the sufferings we now endure, | 20:50
bear are no comparison with the splendor, | 20:53
which is in store for us. | 20:56
For the created universe waits with eager expectation | 21:00
for God's sons and daughters to be revealed. | 21:03
It was made a victim of frustration, | 21:09
not by its own choice, but because of him who made it so | 21:12
yet always there is hope, amen. | 21:20
And now to God the father, God the son, God the Holy Spirit, | 21:29
we ascribe as his most justly do Almighty majesty dominion | 21:31
and power henceforth world without him. | 21:35
Congregation | Amen. | 21:39 |
ALL | I believe in one God, the Father Almighty, | 21:41 |
maker of heaven and earth, | 21:45
and of all things visible and invisible, | 21:47
and in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only begotten son of God | 21:50
begotten of his father before all worlds, | 21:55
God of God, light of light, very God of very God, | 21:58
begotten not made, being of one substance with the father, | 22:03
by whom all the were made, | 22:08
who for us men and for our salvation came down from heaven | 22:11
and was incarnate by the holy ghost of the Virgin Mary | 22:15
and was made man, and was crucified also for us | 22:19
under Pontius Pilate. | 22:23
He suffered and was buried. | 22:25
And the third day he rose again, according to the scriptures | 22:27
and ascended into heaven. | 22:31
And seated on the right hand of the Father. | 22:33
And he shall come again with glory to judge | 22:36
both the quick and the dead whose kingdom shall have no end. | 22:39
And I believe in the holy ghost, the Lord and giver | 22:43
of life who proceeded from the father and the son. | 22:47
With the father and the son together is worshiped | 22:51
and glorified, who speak by the prophets. | 22:54
And I believe one Catholic and apostolic church. | 22:58
I acknowledge one baptism for the remission of sins. | 23:02
And I look for the resurrection of the dead | 23:05
and the life of the world to come, amen. | 23:08

maker of all things, judge of all men. | 25:39
We acknowledge and bewail our manifold sins and wickedness | 25:43
which we from time to time | 25:47
most grievously have committed | 25:49
by thought, word, and deed against the divine majesty, | 25:51
provoking most justly via wrath and indignation against us. | 25:56
We do earnestly repent | 26:01
and are hardly sorry for these our misdoings. | 26:03
The remembrance of them is grievous unto us. | 26:06
The burden of them is intolerable. | 26:09
Have mercy upon us. | 26:12

Congregation | Amen. | 27:02 |
- | The peace of the Lord be always with you. | 27:04 |
Congregation | And with your spirit. | 27:07 |
- | I wanna thank the administration | 27:54 |
and those responsible for this beautiful edifice | 27:56
for letting us year after year share it with them | 28:02
in this grand and glorious service. | 28:08
I also want to express my appreciation | 28:11
to the Reverend John Jessup, | 28:13
the youth commission and all who volunteered | 28:15
to handle the details of this service. | 28:18
We owe a particular debt of gratitude | 28:22
to Father Bruce Shepard, | 28:25
who is chaplain here at Duke University, | 28:27
who year after year is consumed | 28:29
with children and fried chicken, | 28:33
and makes the arrangements for this service. | 28:36
He already has it arranged for next year, | 28:40
and the date is November the 6th. | 28:43
So Bruce stays one year ahead of himself. | 28:46
I'm grateful to our organist, the choir, | 28:49
the young people's choir from the Chapel of The Cross, | 28:54
and the young people who are sharing | 28:57
with them from St Titus Church in Durham. | 28:59
This is began years ago as an Acolyte Festival, | 29:03
at which we prepared for 75 people to attend. | 29:09
And the first year there were over 900. | 29:14
It has slowly become and is developing into, | 29:17
not only an acolyte but a youth festival. | 29:22
I think this is important. | 29:26
I think it is important to you to be here. | 29:29
It is important to us that you are here. | 29:32
It is important to the church as a whole, that you are here. | 29:35
And it is important to everyone to have this witness | 29:40
of as many young people as are in this church today | 29:45
who stand here in the name of the faith, | 29:52
which they profess as Episcopalians | 29:55
to share at the Lord's table | 29:58
in the breaking of bread and the pouring of wine. | 30:00
More important, it's good for your soul. | 30:04
And I rejoice. | 30:08 | |
And it's good for my soul just to see you here, | 30:09
and to share in the service with you. | 30:12
I'm supposed to make an announcement. | 30:17
You will be directed by the ushers | 30:21
to the stations where you will make your communion. | 30:24
To do good and to distribute forget not | 30:28
for with such sacrifices, God is well pleased. | 30:30

Congregation | It is meet and right so to do. | 38:22 |
- | It is very meet, right, | 38:28 |
and our bounden duty that we should at all times | 38:30
and in all places give thanks unto thee, O Lord | 38:34
Holy Father, Almighty, everlasting God. | 38:37
Therefore with angels and archangels, | 38:42
and with all the company of heaven, | 38:45

Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord. | 39:43
Congregation | Hosanna in the highest. | 39:47 |
- | Sorry father, I have sinned. | 40:22 |
- | All glory be to the almighty God | 40:30 |
our heavenly father, father of thy tender mercy | 40:32
didst give thine only son, Jesus Christ to suffer death | 40:36
upon the cross for our redemption. | 40:39
Who made there by his one oblation of himself once offered, | 40:42
a full, perfect and sacrifice oblation and satisfaction | 40:47
for the sins of the whole world. | 40:51
And did institute and in his holy gospel | 40:57
command us to continue a perpetual memory | 40:59
of that his precious death and sacrifice | 41:02
until his coming again. | 41:04
For in the night in which he was betrayed, he took bread. | 41:09
And when He had given thanks, | 41:13
He break it, and gave it to his disciple saying, | 41:19
"Take, eat, this is my body, | 41:24
which is given for you do this in remembrance of me." | 41:28
Likewise, after supper he took the cup. | 41:47
And when he had given thanks, | 41:53
he gave it to them saying, | 41:55
"Drink ye all of this, for this is my blood | 41:58
of the New Testament, which is shed for you | 42:03
and for many, for the remission of sins. | 42:07
Do this as oft as you shall drink it | 42:12
in remembrance of me." | 42:17
Wherefore, O Lord and heavenly Father | 42:37
according to the institution of thy dearly beloved son, | 42:39
our savior Jesus Christ, | 42:42
we thy humble servants to celebrate | 42:45
and make here before thy divine majesty, | 42:48
with these thy holy gifts | 42:52
which we now offer unto thee, | 42:53
the memorial thy son hath commanded us to make, | 42:56
having in remembrance the blessed passion and precious death | 43:00
his mighty resurrection and glorious ascension, | 43:04
rendering unto the most hearty thanks | 43:08
for the innumerable benefits procured unto us by the same. | 43:10
And we most humbly beseech thee, | 43:15
O merciful father to hear us | 43:17
and of thy almighty goodness vouchsafe to bless | 43:19
and sanctify with thy word and Holy Spirit. | 43:23
These thy gifts and creatures of bread and wine | 43:27
