noise and conversation and hustle and bustle filled the air. | 32:50

that these are the best years of my life, | 33:37
I'm not so sure I wanna stay around for the rest," | 33:39
lonesome valley. | 33:47
Maybe the real message of Palm Sunday will come through | 33:51
if we look to see how Jesus walked | 33:53
through this lonesome valley. | 33:56
Jesus walked through this lonesome valley, caring. | 33:57
He cared for others. | 34:02
He cared throughout His life. | 34:04
He cared for the blind whom He made to see. | 34:07

He cared for Lazarus and His family with whom He wept. | 34:23
He cared for a little child and said, | 34:27
we should all become as little children. | 34:30
He cared for the thief with whom He'd die. | 34:33
He cared for His mother, as He died. | 34:37
Jesus cared about persons and He cared about them, | 34:41

Today, I'm afraid we are too accustomed | 34:47
to thinking large numbers, hundreds, thousands, | 34:50
maybe even millions, but to Jesus the Christ, | 34:53
it is the one who counts. | 34:56
For when someone hurts, she hurts as one, | 35:00
not as a multitude. | 35:05
When someone is lonely, he is lonely as one, not as a crowd. | 35:08
When someone is sad, she is sad as one, and not as many. | 35:14
When someone is dying, he faces his death, | 35:20
not that of the masses. | 35:25
To the caring Christ, it is the one who really counts. | 35:28
And so it should be for those of us | 35:32
who call ourselves by the name of Jesus Christ. | 35:34
Collin Morris writes in his little book, | 35:38
"Include Me Out!" | 35:40
About the church, | 35:41
"This whole massive structure we call a church," | 35:43

That is what all the singing and praying | 36:01

It is about the paramount significance to God, | 36:06
of a single human being. | 36:09
And if we fail in meeting that single human beings need, | 36:11
we fail in everything." | 36:15
All of this church, singing this choir, | 36:18
this place here where we gather today, praying, giving, | 36:22
building all the other paraphernalia, | 36:26
all of this is to be brought | 36:28
to focus upon any one person's need, | 36:30
and just to show the great significance to God | 36:33
of one human being. | 36:36
Oh the tenderness, the compassion, the care, the love, | 36:39
the concern that God has for one person. | 36:45
Sound absurd? | 36:50 | |
Sure it does, surely it does. | 36:53
Unless your little child | 36:59
is the one who needs the healing hand of the doctor, | 37:00
and then one person is very important. | 37:04
Or unless it is your mother who has become husband-less | 37:09
and she needs comfort and understanding, | 37:14
and then one person becomes very important. | 37:17
Or unless it is your roommate who has failed | 37:21
to get into law school or med school, | 37:24
or who has received a dear John, | 37:27
or who has found out that she is going to have a baby, | 37:29
and then one person is very important. | 37:33
The love and tenderness of God and His concern | 37:38
and care for one person is like that of the little old lady | 37:42
who knocked on the preacher's study door one Sunday morning, | 37:48
about two minutes before 11 o'clock | 37:51
and the preacher opened the door. | 37:54
And the little old lady was standing there | 37:56
with a tiny fluttering bird in her hands. | 37:58
And she said, "He was hurt and I had to pick him up." | 38:02
And the preacher said, | 38:10
"Oh yes, that's nice of you Mrs. Jones, | 38:11
I'm sorry about the little bird." | 38:13
And he hurried off to the sanctuary for the worship service. | 38:16
And reflecting later, the preacher said, | 38:21
"Oh, if only I had had sense enough | 38:23
to let that little old lady preach the sermon that day, | 38:27
to let her stand in the pulpit | 38:31
and just open up her hands and show everybody, | 38:32
how much she cared for a little old bird." | 38:35
The love and care and concern of God is just like that. | 38:42
In his little book entitled "Meditations in Universe," | 38:47
Paul Monka says, "When all is said, nothing is done." | 38:51
And too many of us are sayers, talkers, | 38:59
word mongers, and not doers, carers, lovers. | 39:03
Preachers are taught to talk, to preach, | 39:09
and not really to listen. | 39:13
Professors are trained to tell, | 39:15
and always not to hear from others. | 39:18
Students are instructed to deal with content, | 39:23
not always to care about persons. | 39:27
The engineering student or med student or law student | 39:30
or divinity student or education student | 39:33
is taught skills and methods and materials, | 39:35
and not often helped to be sensitive to people. | 39:39
Oh, how we need carers today. | 39:43

that God comes to us in any death moment or fear moment | 41:34
and despair moment and brings us to life again. | 41:38
But it's fleeting. | 41:43
Karl Harmonie reminds us, | 41:45
"It's time we really face this harsh reality," he says, | 41:46
"Truth is seldom wholly nice, | 41:50
and faith is never wholly certain | 41:54
for more than a moment at a time. | 41:57
Faith has to deal to live with contradictions | 42:01

Lonesome valley, but God is there. | 42:16
This week we have remembered the life | 42:21
of Martin Luther king Jr. | 42:24
On the occasion, the sad occasion | 42:28
of the sixth anniversary of his assassination, | 42:31
his last sermon, like many others | 42:35
had some powerful words in it. | 42:39
Perhaps though as we read them now | 42:43
they have more meaning to us | 42:45
because we know what he did not know at the time, | 42:46
namely that death was just a few hours away for him. | 42:49
The last paragraph of his last sermon includes these words, | 42:53
"Well, I don't know what will happen now, | 42:57
we've got some difficult days ahead, | 43:02
but it really doesn't matter to me now | 43:05
because I've been to the mountain top, and I don't mind. | 43:07
Like anybody. I would like to live a long life, | 43:13
longevity has its place, | 43:17
but I'm not concerned about that now, | 43:20
I just want to do God's will. | 43:22
