| a finale and an advent, | 33:04 | |

| There comes an advent which begins the church year | 33:13 | |

| It has been so before. | 33:21 | |
| For a century or more, | 33:25 | |

| As the Christian era approached, | 33:44 | |
| there were oracles and prophecies of a new beginning | 33:47 | |
| and a sheer unwillingness to give up the dimension of hope. | 33:53 | |
| Horace and Virgil looked to Octavian | 33:59 | |
| as the present deity, the August One, | 34:03 | |
| and he came to be known as Augustus Caesar. | 34:06 | |

| and hope for conquering strength. | 34:16 | |
| Mystery religions and Gnostic sex | 34:20 | |
| look for knowledge and immortality. | 34:22 | |

| May He establish His kingdom in your lifetime | 34:32 | |
| and in your days, | 34:36 | |
| and in the lifetime of the whole house of Israel. | 34:39 | |
| In this era, with its sense of exhaustion and hope, | 34:47 | |
| there was another appearance. | 34:50 | |
| Jesus came. | 34:53 | |
| Perhaps he was not unexpected if one stresses | 34:56 | |
| the theme of hope, but certainly he was unrecognized | 34:59 | |
| if one takes his effort as evidence the response to him. | 35:04 | |
| If only he had been a political revolutionary, | 35:11 | |
| the Galileans would have understood and rallied. | 35:14 | |
| If only he had done a rabbi of more prestige | 35:20 | |
| and more in line with dominant Torah interpretation, | 35:24 | |
| the Pharisees would have been supportive. | 35:28 | |
| If only, but one can play that game endlessly. | 35:32 | |
| Jesus came. | 35:39 | |
| Born in an inconspicuous place, | 35:42 | |
| living in an ordinary way. | 35:46 | |
| He finally in manhood started preaching | 35:49 | |
| that the kingdom of God was at hand. | 35:52 | |
| The reign of God or better the reigning God was his theme. | 35:56 | |
| God was sovereign. | 36:03 | |
| He could change the old into something so new | 36:06 | |
| the old could not contain it. | 36:09 | |
| God, Jesus claimed, could take both the faded trust | 36:12 | |
| and the hopeful expectation and transform them. | 36:19 | |
| The sovereign reigning of God was the reality | 36:26 | |
| of which Jesus spoke, | 36:29 | |
| the reality which Jesus represented, | 36:30 | |
| the reality which he was, in a decisive way, bringing. | 36:33 | |
| And to this, he called people to respond. | 36:39 | |
| But people were not very responsive. | 36:47 | |
| With the intermingling of cries, hope and despair, | 36:51 | |
| and the over loud proclamation of new beginnings, | 36:55 | |
| and the blinding activity attempting to force change, | 36:58 | |
| God's presence was neither heard nor seen. | 37:02 | |
| Jesus came but in a quiet way, | 37:08 | |
| and with the humility of a servant. | 37:13 | |
| No king this. | 37:17 | |
| No leader who all would be forced to recognize. | 37:20 | |

| the awareness of a mission, | 37:32 | |
| consorting with outcast, crying at death, | 37:35 | |
| laughing at a wedding. | 37:40 | |
| In the company of believing, | 37:43 | |
| unbelieving disciples, Jesus came. | 37:45 | |
| He died a common death and he arose | 37:49 | |
| even to the astonishment of those closest to him. | 37:53 | |
| He came. | 37:57 | |
| Not many wise and not many powerful | 38:00 | |
| recognized his coming. | 38:06 | |
| Indeed they scoffed. | 38:09 | |
| Can sovereignty and such weakness be combined? | 38:12 | |
| Can hope be attached to a servant? | 38:19 | |
| It's always difficult to recognize the coming of God. | 38:26 | |
| It is open only to the eyes of faith | 38:31 | |

| and to set at liberty those who were in bondage. | 39:22 | |
| James Montgomery attempted to capture | 39:29 | |
| this same meaning in his well-known advent hymn. | 39:31 | |
| Hail to the Lord's anointed. | 39:37 | |
| Great David's greater Son. | 39:39 | |
| Hail in the time appointed. | 39:42 | |
| His reign on earth begun. | 39:45 | |
| He comes to break oppression to set the captives free, | 39:48 | |
| to take away transgression and rule in equity. | 39:53 | |
| He comes with sucker speedy to those who suffer wrong, | 39:59 | |
| to help the poor and needy and bid the weak be strong. | 40:05 | |
| Small tokens, perhaps, | 40:12 | |
| but tokens of immense power. | 40:15 | |
| So now we come once again to the season of advent. | 40:19 | |
| In this December season with its dormant life | 40:23 | |
| shrouded with tinsel and parades, | 40:27 | |
| we are in a time which in the guise of remembering | 40:31 | |
| often forgets or simply fails to see the presence of God. | 40:34 | |
| It requires a sensitive eye to see God, | 40:43 | |
| a spirit attuned | 40:49 | |
| to recognize that sovereign power | 40:54 | |
| can come in unexpected form. | 40:56 | |
| The tokens are small. | 41:00 | |
| caring, healing, | 41:02 | |
| bonding the bruised, | 41:07 | |
| strongly serving the cause of equity. | 41:09 | |
| Is this the way of sovereign power? | 41:14 | |
| It was in Christ God's way. | 41:18 | |
| He came bearing this gospel. | 41:23 | |
| And the gospel is wonderful. | 41:28 | |
| Its hope includes all persons. | 41:31 | |
| It carries a contagious joy. | 41:34 | |
| It meets the world forthrightly challenging | 41:36 | |
| its evil and embracing its love. | 41:39 | |
| Every person without exception is brother and sister. | 41:43 | |
| The gospel witnesses to the fact | 41:50 | |
| that with God, every hunger pain is felt. | 41:52 | |
| Every tear is collected. | 41:56 | |
| Every demeaning is known. | 42:01 | |
| Every loneliness is met | 42:05 | |
| and every spiritual emptiness evokes grace. | 42:09 | |
| God affirms our present human life | 42:16 | |
| and our ultimate meaning. | 42:19 | |
| The gospel expresses this affirmation | 42:21 | |
| and sends us forth to serve its cause. | 42:24 | |
| It is an awesome thing to see with the gospel, | 42:30 | |
| God loves you. | 42:34 | |
| For to say this can only be done with the awareness | 42:37 | |
| that we are often speaking to those | 42:40 | |
| who have been discriminated against | 42:43 | |
| by those who speak of God. | 42:46 | |
| We carry the knowledge that those whom God loves | 42:50 | |
| we have not always loved. | 42:55 | |
| In acknowledging God's reign, | 42:59 | |
| we often act on personal and societal self-interest. | 43:02 | |
| So we cannot speak of God's love carelessly | 43:08 | |
| or offhandedly, or casually. | 43:12 | |
| Good words misused only imprint pain more deeply. | 43:18 | |
| Pious words spoken impiously reveal disrespect for God | 43:24 | |
| and insensitivity to our neighbor. | 43:29 | |
| We must be carefully and comprehending | 43:32 | |
| and with intentionality. | 43:35 | |
| To love God is costly. | 43:39 | |
| To carry the gospel is costly. | 43:42 | |
| To speak of advent of the reigning God is demanding. | 43:47 | |
| To say God loves you is a speech act. | 43:52 | |
| It is to go to the hungry, to the outsiders, | 43:58 | |
| to the poor, and to the spiritually sick. | 44:03 | |
| And it has to go to our social order | 44:08 | |
| and to struggle in the behalf of those in need. | 44:12 | |
| In all of this, the Lord and the neighbor | 44:19 | |
| become interconnected. | 44:21 | |
| They're not identical. | 44:24 | |
| The neighbor is not the Lord. | 44:26 | |
| But to follow the Lord leads us directly to the neighbor. | 44:29 | |
| A loving care for the neighbor requires it returned | 44:33 | |
| to the Lord for strength. | 44:36 | |
| For those who have eyes to see and ears to hear, | 44:41 | |
| there is a recognition of the reigning God, | 44:46 | |
| God reigning, and a servant, | 44:48 | |
| and a man who lived and suffered and was renewed. | 44:50 | |
| With such a one the kingdom comes. | 44:55 | |
| God's kingdom and our history. | 44:58 | |
| It does not come with completeness. | 45:02 | |
| But his karat is revealed. | 45:05 | |
| Its form displayed, its requirements set. | 45:07 | |
| And the hope, which is realized | 45:12 | |
| in this strangely simple way, among those who serve, | 45:14 | |
| reaches beyond itself to more eternal dimensions | 45:20 | |
| when the kingdom shall be present in its fullness. | 45:24 | |
| And in the midst of it all, | 45:30 | |
| we hear the heartbeat of God's spell. | 45:33 | |
| Prepare ye the way of the Lord. | 45:36 | |
| It is moving, driving music, | 45:42 | |
| yet the command is simple in its direction. | 45:46 | |
| For as much as you do it to one of the least of these, | 45:50 | |
| my brethren, you have done it under me. | 45:53 | |
| The way is prepared. | 45:59 | |
| And into the paradox of an old time, | 46:02 | |
| which is giving way to a new time, we offer a prayer. | 46:04 | |
| Day-by-day | 46:10 | |
| oh dear Lord three things I pray. | 46:13 | |
