- | When we gather to praise God, | 4:27 |
we remember that we are his people | 4:31
who have referred our wills to his. | 4:33
Accepting his power to become new persons in Christ, | 4:37
let us confess our sins before God and one another. | 4:42
Let us pray. | 4:47 | |
Most merciful God, | 4:50
we confess that we have sinned against you | 4:52
in thought, word and did. | 4:55
We have not loved you with our whole heart. | 4:58
We have not loved your neighbors as ourselves. | 5:02
We pray you of your mercy, forgive what we have been, | 5:06
amend what we are, direct what we shall be | 5:11
that we may delight in your will | 5:16
and walk in your ways. | 5:19
Through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. | 5:21
Here's the good news, Christ died for us | 5:26
while we were yet sinners. | 5:31
That is God's own proof of his love toward us. | 5:33
In the name of Jesus Christ you are forgiven, | 5:37
in the name of Jesus Christ you are forgiven. | 5:42
Glory to God. Amen. | 5:46

- | Let us pray. | 7:05 |
Lord open our hearts and minds | 7:09
by the power of your Holy Spirit. | 7:11
That as the scriptures all read in the word proclaim, | 7:14
we may hear with joy what you say to us today, | 7:18
I was scripted lesson for the morning, | 7:25
comes from the gospel of St. Luke 22:14-20, | 7:28
"And when the hour came, he sat at a table | 7:37
and the apostles with them, | 7:40
and he said to them, 'After earnestly desire | 7:43
to this Passover with you before I suffer | 7:46
for I tell you I shall not eat it | 7:49
until it is fulfilled in the kingdom of God.' | 7:52
And he took a cup when he had given thanks he said, | 7:55
'Take this and divide it among yourselves. | 7:59
I'll tell you that from now on i should not drink | 8:02
of the fruit of the vine until the kingdom of God comes' | 8:04
and he took bread and when he had to give him thanks | 8:09
he broke it and gave it to them saying, 'This is my body.'" | 8:11
May the Lord has blessing to the reading of his word. | 8:19
Let us pray. | 8:25 | |
Jesus Christ, our Lord and whose name we pray. | 8:31
We ask with our mind open up our hearts | 8:36
so that we can participate in this service. | 8:39
And we ask ooh, God thy will be present with us. Amen. | 8:43
So, we are here this morning in this beautiful, | 8:51
peaceful and hallowed place. | 8:55
The beauty of this moment cannot be matched | 8:58
in many places in Durham. | 9:01
We are indeed blessed to be able to experience | 9:03
these moments of peace, these moments of reflection, | 9:05
and quite wise to reach out and grasp them | 9:10
when the lives of too many of us, | 9:14
these moments come to infrequent. | 9:17
And for those who are privileged to be able to experience | 9:20
frequent moments like these, | 9:23
there's always an occasion where are peaceful moments | 9:26
of reflection of (speaks faintly) | 9:28
or somehow bothered some intrusion which breaks in | 9:31
and manages to take away our beautiful moments. | 9:34
a thought here, and event, | 9:37
there are some other bothersome intrusion | 9:41
is always vying for attention. | 9:43
And as we meet this morning, that bothersome intrusions, | 9:48
which are banned for the attention of each of us, | 9:53
where all is attempting to break into this hallowed place | 9:58
and disturb us. | 10:02 | |
A war still goes on. | 10:04
There's the threat of war in several places, | 10:07
people are hungry, sick, and dying. | 10:10
The economy has trouble spots. | 10:14
Racism is still with us | 10:17
and drugs threatened engulf our society. | 10:20
And men and women are campaigning for public office | 10:24
promising to solve these and other problems. | 10:28
We try in our own ways to decide, to participate, | 10:32
to serve these world and national problems. | 10:37
And as we think about individual and personal situations, | 10:41
we all face with other bothersome intrusions. | 10:45
There is a son or daughter that I cannot reach | 10:49
the mother or father that does not understand | 10:53
the troubles that just not go away. | 10:56
The flaws in my character that I can not correct | 10:59
the societal problems that I will not understand. | 11:03
I cannot understand and will not attempt to solve. | 11:06
Indeed when we look at the world national local | 11:12
and personal problems, | 11:15
it appears as if the outside world is attempting to break | 11:16
into this hallowed plagues. | 11:19
And maybe it is good that we must contend | 11:22
with these bothersome intrusions | 11:24
we've there is to be any writing of the wrongs of the world. | 11:27
There has to be an infusion of new meaning into the world. | 11:31
Enough people who profess what we profess | 11:35
must contend with the bothersome intrusions. | 11:38
Well, this is easy to say, | 11:42
"How does one contend with bothersome intrusions | 11:44
in the face of so much confusion | 11:47
and meaninglessness in modern society? | 11:49
In what do we depend? | 11:52
In whom do we find direction and meaning? | 11:55
Too many traditions, institutions | 11:58
and values are losing meaning for us. | 12:00
(speaks faintly) the family, the schools, | 12:03
government, marriage, law, | 12:06
and yes, even the church are losing that meaning for us. | 12:09
Yes, in the midst of meaninglessness, | 12:14
too many things appear to be lost forever. | 12:17
Often it is as if our entire beings | 12:21
were threatened by the overwhelming | 12:24
meaninglessness of it all. | 12:26
And we have come to this beautiful, | 12:29
peaceful and hallowed place this morning, | 12:31
not seeking to escape | 12:34
or to participate in the holy communion. | 12:36
We must ask doesn't have real meaning for us. | 12:39
Or is it also like so many other things that we experience, | 12:43
we must answer no. | 12:47
Holy Communion is so rich | 12:50
and full of meaning that one cannot grasp | 12:51
no articulated school meaning. | 12:54
In a real sense, Holy Communion brings meaning | 12:57
to intrude upon and destroy meaninglessness, | 13:00
the way the Holy Communion and affects the participants | 13:05
individually can not be fully understood nor articulate. | 13:07
However, my task this morning is not to exhaust the meanings | 13:13
of the Holy Communion, | 13:16
nor is it to define it a new | 13:18
rather it is to reflect upon some essential dimensions | 13:22
of the Holy Communion and what they can mean for our times, | 13:24
the prominent theologian, John Macquarrie | 13:29
provide some insights into the Holy Communion | 13:31
that are a word the of serious reflection. | 13:34
He instructs us that in the Holy Communion, | 13:38
one can recognize the unity of a past, future, and present. | 13:41
Therefore, one can feel the Holy Communion | 13:46
as the remembering, the anticipating, | 13:48
and the making present. | 13:52
The Holy Communion, is the remembering of Christ, | 13:54
but it's also the remembering of his word, | 13:57
the re presenting of his saving word. | 14:00
It is God's action through Christ that we remember | 14:04
the life and self giving of Christ | 14:07
becomes a work of salvation for us. | 14:09
Not only do we remember who we also anticipate, | 14:12
we participate in the Holy Communion until Christ comes | 14:17
to complete his work. | 14:20
We look forward to his coming. | 14:22
We anticipate this completed word. | 14:25
We remember the work of Christ we anticipate the completion | 14:28
of the saving work. | 14:32
And we also acknowledge the making present of Christ | 14:34
and his word. | 14:37 | |
The Holy Communion we have knowledge that Christ is with us | 14:39
working in the world, to right the wrongs of the world, | 14:43
bringing peace where there is war, love where there is hate, | 14:46
freedom where there is racist pressure, | 14:52
joy and fulfillment where there is sorrow hunger and death. | 14:54
(speaks faintly) with us, bringing | 14:59
meaning to our existence, | 15:00
infusing meaning and vain to those things | 15:02
that appeared to be devoid of meaning and vain. | 15:06
As we come together as one community to participate | 15:10
in the Holy Communion, | 15:13
we are participating in the representation | 15:15
of the saving work of Christ, | 15:17
where he seeks to communicate his presence to us | 15:20
and to incorporate us with him | 15:24
when we have gone far from this place and to the world, | 15:27
our existence will conform to the pattern of his life. | 15:33
Remembering that Christ says to those who follow him, | 15:36
do this in remembrance of me. | 15:40
Thank God. Amen. | 15:44 | |
- | May we rise as we affirm our faith as Christian. | 16:01 |
We believe in God who has created and is creating, | 16:11
who has come and the true man, Jesus to reconcile | 16:16
and make new who works in us and others by a spirit. | 16:20
We trust him. | 16:26 | |
He calls us to be in his church to celebrate his presence, | 16:27
to love and serve others, to seek justice and resist evil, | 16:33
to proclaim Jesus crucified and risen our judge | 16:38
and our hope and life and death and life beyond death. | 16:42
God is with us. | 16:49 | |
We are not alone. | 16:51 | |
Thanks the to God. | 16:53
Let us offer prayers of intercession for our world | 17:07
and our neighbors. | 17:11
Let us pray. | 17:13 | |
Let us pray that the world may live in peace | 17:16
and that the church may achieve unity, | 17:20
fulfilling its service here and everywhere. | 17:23
This is our prayer | 17:27
that all ministers and teachers in the church | 17:29
may be faithful servants of the gospel, | 17:32
leading others into its way of life | 17:35
and strengthening their faith. | 17:38
This is our prayer that the leaders of this nation | 17:40
and that the world may govern with justice and mercy. | 17:44
(congregation speaking faintly) | 17:50
That all our work may be done for the common good | 17:51
that it'd be done in safety. | 17:56
And that all may be spared from grinding toil, | 17:58
which destroys the fullness of life. | 18:01
(congregation speaking faintly) | 18:04
That those who work on frontiers of truth, | 18:06
and those who enrich our lives with beauty and joy | 18:09
may be free to follow their vocations. | 18:13
(congregation speaking faintly) | 18:16
That those who suffered disease or poverty or loneliness | 18:19
or grief may be healed and comforted. | 18:23
That those who are oppressed or prosecuted, | 18:27
maybe strengthened and delivered. | 18:30
(congregation speaking faintly) | 18:34
But those whom we have known and love | 18:35
who have died in the faith | 18:39
may be a glorious memory to us | 18:40
and a source of renewed fellowship with all the saints. | 18:43
This is our prayer through Jesus Christ, | 18:48
our Lord. Amen. | 18:51 | |
Christ our Lord invites to his table | 18:58
all who love him and who desire to live in peace | 19:01
with one another. | 19:06
May the peace of the Lord be with you. | 19:08
(congregation speaking faintly) | 19:11
As forgiven and reconciled people, | 19:14
let us offer ourselves and our gifts to God. | 19:17

You break bread that we may taste heaven, | 29:06
you pour wine that we may receive salvation. | 29:09

that grace shall marrow into our very bones. | 29:59

(congregation speaking faintly) | 30:50
Let us give thanks to the Lord, our God Father. | 30:52
(congregation speaking faintly) | 30:55
Father, it is right that we should always | 30:59
and everywhere give you thanks and praise only. | 31:02
You are God, you created all things and call them good. | 31:06
You made us in your own image. | 31:12
Even when we rebelled against your love, | 31:16
you did not desert us. | 31:19
You delivered us from captivity, | 31:21
made covenant to be our God and king | 31:24
and spoke to us through your prophets. | 31:28
Therefore, we joined the entire company of heaven | 31:31
and all your people now on earth | 31:34
and worshiping and glorifying you. | 31:36
Holy, holy, holy, Lord, God of power and might, | 31:40
heaven and earth are full of your glory. | 31:46
Hosanna in the highest blessed is he who comes | 31:49
in the name of the Lord Hosanna in the highest | 31:53
we thank you, father, that you loved the world so much. | 31:58
You sent your only son to be our savior. | 32:02
The Lord of all life came to live among us, | 32:05
the healed and taught men eat with sinners | 32:08
and one for you, a new people by water and the spirit. | 32:13
We saw his glory. | 32:17 | |
Yeah. He humbled himself in obedience to your will | 32:20
freely accepting death on a cross. | 32:24
By dying he freed us from unending death | 32:28
by rising from the dead. | 32:32
He gave us everlasting life. | 32:34
We remember that on the night in which he was betrayed, | 32:37
he gave himself up for us. | 32:42
The Lord Jesus took bread. | 32:44
And after giving thanks, | 32:47
he broke the bread and gave it to his disciples and said, | 32:49
"Take eat This is my body, which is given for you." | 32:54
When this supper was over, he took the cup. | 33:00
And again, he returned thanks to you | 33:08
and gave the cup to his disciples and said, | 33:11
"Drink from this all of you. | 33:14
This is the cup of the new covenant in my blood | 33:17
poured out for you and many for the forgiveness of sin." | 33:20
When we eat this bread and drink this cup, | 33:26
we experience anew the presence of the Lord, Jesus Christ | 33:29
and we look forward to his coming in victory. | 33:34
Christ has died, Christ is risen, Christ will come again. | 33:37
We remember and proclaim with gratitude, Heavenly Father, | 33:44
what your son has done for us in his life and death | 33:48
and his resurrection and Ascension, | 33:52
except our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving | 33:55
and union with Christ offering for us | 33:59
as a reasonable and holy surrender of ourselves, | 34:02
send the power of your holy spirit on us gathered here | 34:06
out of love for you and on these gifts, | 34:10
help us know in the breaking of this bread | 34:14
and the drinking of this wine the presence of Christ | 34:17
who gave his body and blood for mankind. | 34:20
Make us one with Christ, one with each other, | 34:24
and one in service to all mankind | 34:28
through your son, Jesus Christ, with the holy spirit | 34:31
and your holy church of glory | 34:35
and honor is yours father. | 34:38
Amen. | 34:41 | |
In unity with Christ and with each other we pray. | 34:42
Our father in heaven. | 34:46
Holy be your name, your kingdom come, | 34:48
your will be done on earth as in heaven, | 34:52
give us today the bread we need. | 34:56
Forgive us, our sins as we forgive those who sin against us, | 34:59
save us in the time of trial and deliver us from evil | 35:04
for the kingdom, the power and the glory are yours | 35:09
now and forever. | 35:13 | |
Amen. | 35:16 | |
Because there is one loaf we as many as we are, | 35:35
are one body for it is one loaf of which we all partake. | 35:40
When we break the bread, | 35:48
it is a means of sharing the body of Christ. | 35:50
When we give thanks over the cup, | 36:03
it is a means of sharing and the blood of Christ. | 36:05
The gifts of God, for the people of God, | 36:12
body of Christ, the bread of heaven, the blood of Christ, | 36:17
the cup of salvation. | 36:23
Take them in remembrance that Christ gave himself for you | 36:26
and feed on him in your hearts, by faith with thanksgiving. | 36:32
