| - | The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ | 2:57 |
| and the love of God be with you on this Holy Thursday eve. | 2:59 | |
| Now, let us hear these words from holy scripture. | 3:05 | |
| "I am the living bread which came down from heaven. | 3:09 | |
| If anyone eats of this bread, he will live forever, | 3:13 | |
| and the bread which I shall give for the life of the world | 3:18 | |
| is my flesh. | 3:22 | |
| The cup of blessing, which we bless, | 3:24 | |
| is it not a participation in the blood of Christ? | 3:28 | |
| The bread which we break, | 3:32 | |
| is it not a participation in the body of Christ? | 3:34 | |
| Because there is one love. | 3:38 | |
| We who are many are one body | 3:40 | |
| for we all partake of the same loaf. | 3:44 | |
| Beloved, let us love one another for love is of God; | 3:48 | |
| and he who loves is born of God and knows God. | 3:53 | |
| In this, the love of God was made manifest among us, | 3:58 | |
| that God sent his only Son into the world | 4:02 | |
| so that we might live through him. | 4:05 | |
| Christ, our Paschal lamb, is offered up for us, | 4:09 | |
| once for all, | 4:14 | |
| when he bore our sins on his body upon the cross, | 4:16 | |
| for he is a very lamb of God | 4:20 | |
| that takest away the sins of the world. | 4:23 | |
| Therefore, | 4:26 | |
| let us keep a joyful and holy feast with the Lord." | 4:28 | |
| The Lord be with you. | 4:34 | |
| - | And also with you. | 4:36 |
| - | Let us pray together the Collect for Purity of Heart. | 4:38 |
| Almighty God, unto whom all hearts are open, | 4:43 | |
| all desires known, and from whom no secrets are hidden, | 4:47 | |
| cleanse the thoughts of our hearts | 4:52 | |
| by the inspiration of thy Holy Spirit | 4:55 | |
| that we may perfectly love thee | 4:58 | |
| and worthly magnify thy holy name. | 5:00 | |
| Through Christ our Lord, amen. | 5:04 | |
| Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, | 5:07 | |
| thy kingdom come, | 5:13 | |
| thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. | 5:14 | |
| Give us this day our daily bread; | 5:19 | |
| and forgive us our trespasses | 5:21 | |
| as we forgive those who trespass against us. | 5:24 | |
| And lead us not into temptation, | 5:28 | |
| but deliver us from evil. | 5:30 | |
| For thine is the kingdom | 5:32 | |
| and the power and the glory forever, amen. | 5:34 | |

| Ye that truly and earnestly repent of your sins | 7:48 | |
| and are in love and charity with your neighbors | 7:53 | |
| and intend to lead a new life, | 7:56 | |
| following the commandments of God, | 7:58 | |
| and walking from henceforth in his holy ways, | 8:01 | |
| draw near with faith | 8:05 | |
| and take this holy sacrament to your comfort | 8:08 | |
| and make your humble confession to Almighty God. | 8:12 | |
| Let us offer unto God our unison prayer | 8:20 | |
| of general confession. | 8:24 | |
| Let us pray. | 8:26 | |
| Almighty God, Father of our Lord, Jesus Christ, | 8:28 | |
| maker of all things, judge of all men, | 8:32 | |
| we acknowledge and bewail our manifold sins and wickedness, | 8:36 | |
| which we, from time to time, most grievously have committed | 8:41 | |
| by thought, word, and deed against thy divine majesty. | 8:45 | |
| We do earnestly repent | 8:51 | |
| and are heartily sorry for these, our misdoings. | 8:53 | |
| The remembrance of them is grievous unto us. | 8:56 | |
| Have mercy upon us, have mercy upon us most merciful Father. | 9:00 | |
| For the Son, our Lord Jesus Christ's sake, | 9:05 | |
| forgive us all that is passed | 9:09 | |
| and grant that we may ever hereafter serve and please thee | 9:12 | |
| in newness of life to the honor and glory of thy name, | 9:16 | |
| through Jesus Christ, our Lord, amen. | 9:20 | |
| Almighty God, our heavenly Father, | 9:26 | |
| who of thy great mercy, has promised forgiveness of sins | 9:29 | |
| to all them that with hearty repentance | 9:33 | |
| and true faith turn to thee, have mercy upon us, | 9:36 | |
| pardon and deliver us from all our sins, | 9:41 | |
| confirm and strengthen us in all goodness | 9:45 | |
| and bring us to everlasting life | 9:49 | |
| through Jesus Christ, our Lord; amen. | 9:52 | |
| Hear what comfortable words the scripture say | 9:57 | |
| to all that truly turn to the Lord. | 10:00 | |
| "Come to me all who labor and are heavy laden | 10:04 | |
| and I will give you rest. | 10:08 | |
| God so loved the world that he gave his only Son | 10:11 | |
| that whoever believes in him should not perish, | 10:16 | |
| but have eternal life. | 10:20 | |
| If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just | 10:23 | |
| and will forgive our sins | 10:28 | |
| and will cleanse us from all unrighteousness." | 10:30 | |
| Let us continue our prayers as we join in the litany | 10:36 | |
| for the whole state of Christ's church. | 10:40 | |
| Most merciful Father, we humbly beseech thee | 10:45 | |
| to receive these our prayers for the universal church, | 10:49 | |
| that thou wilt confirm it in the truth of the holy faith, | 10:54 | |
| inspire it with unity and concord | 10:58 | |
| and extend and prosper it throughout the world. | 11:02 | |
| We beseech thee also, so to guide | 11:06 | |
| and strengthen the witness of the church | 11:08 | |
| to those in authority in all nations, | 11:11 | |
| that they may maintain the justice | 11:14 | |
| and welfare of all mankind. | 11:17 | |
| Hear us, we beseech thee, oh Lord. | 11:20 | |
| Give grace, oh heavenly Father, | 11:24 | |
| to all ministers of thy church, | 11:26 | |
| that both by their life and doctrine, | 11:29 | |
| they may set forth thy true and lively word | 11:31 | |
| and fatefully administer thy holy sacraments. | 11:35 | |
| And to all thy people, give thy heavenly grace | 11:39 | |
| that with willing heart and due reverence, | 11:42 | |
| they may hear and receive thy holy word, | 11:45 | |
| truly serving thee in holiness and righteousness | 11:49 | |
| all the days of their lives. | 11:53 | |
| Here us, we beech thee, oh Lord. | 11:55 | |
| And we most humbly beseech thee of thy goodness, oh Lord, | 11:59 | |
| to support and strengthen all those, | 12:04 | |
| who in this transitory life, are in trouble, sorrow, need, | 12:06 | |
| sickness or any other adversity. | 12:13 | |
| Hear us, we beseech the, oh Lord. | 12:18 | |
| We remember with thanksgiving, those who have loved | 12:21 | |
| and served thee in thy church on earth, | 12:25 | |
| who now rest from their labors, | 12:27 | |
| especially those most dear to us, | 12:30 | |
| whom we name in our hearts before thee. | 12:32 | |
| Keep us in fellowship with all thy saints | 12:39 | |
| and bring us at length to the joy of thy heavenly kingdom. | 12:42 | |
| Grant this, oh Father, for the sake of Jesus Christ, | 12:47 | |
| our only mediator and advocate, amen. | 12:51 | |
| To assist us in recalling who we are | 13:08 | |
| and where we are, | 13:14 | |
| hear these words from St. Mark's gospel. | 13:18 | |
| "Now on the first day of Unleavened Bread, | 13:24 | |
| when the Passover lambs were being slaughtered, | 13:27 | |
| his disciples said to him, | 13:31 | |
| 'Where would you like us to go | 13:34 | |
| and prepare for your Passover supper?' | 13:35 | |
| So he sent out two of his disciples with these instructions. | 13:40 | |
| 'Go into the city | 13:44 | |
| and a man will meet you carrying a jar of water. | 13:46 | |
| Follow him, and when he enters a house, | 13:50 | |
| give this message to the householder. | 13:54 | |
| 'The master says, where is the room reserved for me | 13:58 | |
| to eat the Passover with my disciples?' | 14:01 | |
| He will show you a large room upstairs, | 14:05 | |
| set out in readiness. | 14:08 | |
| Make the preparations for us there.' | 14:11 | |
| Then the disciples went off, | 14:15 | |
| and when they came into the city, | 14:16 | |
| they found everything just as he had told them. | 14:19 | |
| So they prepared for Passover. | 14:23 | |
| During supper, he took bread, and having said a blessing, | 14:28 | |
| he broke it and gave it to them with the words, | 14:33 | |
| 'Take this, this is my body.' | 14:37 | |
| Then he took a cup, and having offered thanks to God, | 14:42 | |
| he gave it to them and they all drank from it. | 14:46 | |
| And he said, 'This is my blood of the covenant, | 14:50 | |
| shed for many. | 14:54 | |
| I tell you this, | 14:57 | |
| never again shall I drink from the fruit of the vine | 14:59 | |
| until that day when I drink it new in the kingdom of God.'" | 15:03 | |
| The night has come, | 15:15 | |
| the day is far spent. | 15:18 | |
| The gifts of the day opened as the day unfolded | 15:23 | |
| had been set aside. | 15:29 | |
| The gifts of the night await to be opened. | 15:33 | |
| The gifts before us, | 15:40 | |
| which we are to give and to receive | 15:41 | |
| are those of bread and grape juice, | 15:47 | |
| not unusual gifts. | 15:52 | |
| Yearly for nearly 2000 evenings such as this one, | 15:56 | |
| groups have gathered in upper room places, | 16:02 | |
| varieties of people drawn quietly together | 16:08 | |
| in a variety of places | 16:12 | |
| by these gifts of bread and grape juice, | 16:15 | |
| not unusual gifts. | 16:23 | |
| But with interesting variations, | 16:27 | |
| this past a year, in my own experience, | 16:30 | |
| there has been bread, leavened and unleavened, | 16:35 | |
| salted and unsalted, | 16:39 | |
| whole loaf and broken pieces, | 16:42 | |
| and a variety of wines and grape juice and true aide, | 16:47 | |
| and most recently, a bunch of grapes; | 16:54 | |
| still not unusual gifts, | 17:00 | |
| but a strange way of giving. | 17:05 | |
| That which we offer here | 17:10 | |
| seems to be that which is in turn offered to us. | 17:14 | |
| Are we to receive merely what we already have offered? | 17:22 | |
| Is there not some transformation to occur | 17:31 | |
| from what we have to what we need? | 17:39 | |
| What does this exchange of gifts mean? | 17:48 | |
| The gifts here for exchange are symbols, of course, | 17:55 | |
| and as symbols, they seem far removed in time | 18:01 | |
| from the original gifts of the broken body | 18:06 | |
| and the shed blood of Jesus Christ. | 18:13 | |
| The distance between is more than a distance of time. | 18:19 | |
| The distance between is a pilgrimage of meaning, | 18:25 | |
| and each of us is on that pilgrimage, | 18:30 | |
| somewhere between Kroger bread and the body of Christ, | 18:35 | |
| somewhere between Welch's grape juice | 18:43 | |
| and the blood of Christ. | 18:47 | |
| We seek to anchor the meanings of these gifts | 18:52 | |
| in our own time and across time. | 18:58 | |
| Without such anchor points dug deep | 19:05 | |
| in the river bed of meaning, | 19:09 | |
| we drift. | 19:12 | |
| There are such anchor points to be found. | 19:16 | |
| Grapes belong to Christ. | 19:21 | |
| The juice of the crushed grape | 19:24 | |
| represents his blood shed for us. | 19:27 | |
| Grapes also belong | 19:33 | |
| to the nameless Mexican-American grape pickers | 19:37 | |
| in their struggle for human dignity | 19:42 | |
| in the face of exploitation. | 19:44 | |
| Broken bodies and shed blood, | 19:50 | |
| whether in innocence or in guilt, | 19:53 | |
| destructively or redemptively across time, | 19:57 | |
| there are a plenty. | 20:02 | |
| With so many broken bodies and so much shed blood, | 20:07 | |
| we reach perhaps for bread and grape juice | 20:14 | |
| to hide the horror of what we might have as offerings. | 20:19 | |
| So these elements, these gifts, | 20:28 | |
| these symbols present a two-fold invitation to us, | 20:31 | |
| indeed a two-fold challenge to be anchored in our time | 20:36 | |
| and to be anchored across time. | 20:43 | |
| They invite us to be anchored | 20:48 | |
| in our own individual life experiences, | 20:51 | |
| to draw upon our own deep experiences for meanings, | 20:55 | |
| to be the presentation of our brokenness | 21:00 | |
| and our search for wholeness, | 21:04 | |
| to be the presentation of our crushed dreams, | 21:08 | |
| which ever seek to be resurrected. | 21:13 | |
| These become our gifts, | 21:17 | |
| meanings of our experiences offered. | 21:21 | |
| Indeed in offering the meanings of our life experiences, | 21:26 | |
| we offer our lives in all their brokenness, | 21:30 | |
| but offered and offered to another. | 21:36 | |
| These elements, these gifts, | 21:43 | |
| these symbols also invite us to be anchored across time, | 21:46 | |
| to participate in the meanings offered to us by the faith. | 21:51 | |
| What is offered in return are the meanings | 21:56 | |
| which Christ's life gave to these elements, | 22:00 | |
| meanings which grab us and hold us in their grip, | 22:04 | |
| meanings which are offered to us in return | 22:10 | |
| by the person of Christ. | 22:13 | |
| This is the body of Christ representing not only brokenness, | 22:15 | |
| but a gift within brokenness. | 22:22 | |
| So the invitation is to let the anchor points drop deep | 22:28 | |
| into the bed of life, our life, and that of Christ; | 22:33 | |
| life offered to life. | 22:40 | |
| The temptation is to go no deeper | 22:46 | |
| than cider press experiences. | 22:49 | |
| In my youth, Wednesday and Friday, during apple season, | 22:54 | |
| was cider press day at uncle Sylvester's. | 23:01 | |
| Yes, I had an uncle Sylvester | 23:06 | |
| with his cider press along the Wiconisco Creek | 23:10 | |
| in Central Pennsylvania. | 23:13 | |
| Bushels of apples resulted in gallons of cider. | 23:17 | |
| A sip of that sweet cider was the end result | 23:22 | |
| of a series of marvelous changes, | 23:25 | |
| which began with spring blossoms months before. | 23:29 | |
| Even a muscly bunch of apples resulted inevitably | 23:35 | |
| in the marvelous gift of sweet cider. | 23:40 | |
| But the cider press does not anchor one very deep in life. | 23:44 | |
| It represents the picture card outlook on life. | 23:53 | |
| We seek rather anchor points at a deeper level | 23:58 | |
| to ride out stormier weather than even winter snows. | 24:03 | |
| And the transformation which we seek | 24:11 | |
| is sought at the deepest levels of life. | 24:14 | |
| Our anchors, if they are to hold, | 24:20 | |
| must drop deep through the chaos, | 24:23 | |
| which is there when life seems senseless, | 24:27 | |
| the meaninglessness when life seems empty, | 24:31 | |
| the despair, which is the far side of hope. | 24:35 | |
| The gifts before us are capable of being related | 24:41 | |
| to the depth of human experiences. | 24:46 | |
| We question not the realities | 24:50 | |
| which are symbolized by these elements. | 24:52 | |
| Their realities are all too painfully real. | 24:55 | |
| What is to be questioned rather | 25:01 | |
| is the level of commitment we dare to make | 25:04 | |
| to these realities, | 25:08 | |
| whether our commitment will be shallow or deep. | 25:10 | |
| We risk being grabbed by more than bread and grape juice, | 25:16 | |
| but by body and blood issues, | 25:23 | |
| by issues of life and death. | 25:27 | |
| The question then becomes, | 25:31 | |
| how deeply are we willing to grab hold of | 25:32 | |
| and to be grabbed hold of? | 25:38 | |
| What is our offering to be? | 25:43 | |
| Whatever it may be, | 25:48 | |
| offer it at the level at which you need to receive. | 25:51 | |
| Offer all that you have at that level | 25:58 | |
| to receive all that you need. | 26:04 | |
| The woman told her psychotherapist, | 26:10 | |
| "You gave me back my life." | 26:14 | |
| That's what she had experienced. | 26:18 | |
| She brought him life in despair; that was her offering. | 26:22 | |
| She found her life with hope mingled among the despair. | 26:29 | |
| The gift of herself was a gift of life | 26:38 | |
| at the level of despair. | 26:40 | |
| It had be given at that level | 26:42 | |
| if she was to receive the gift of life at the level of hope. | 26:45 | |
| Until she dug one point of the anchor deep in her despair, | 26:51 | |
| she could not find the other dug deep in hope. | 26:56 | |
| Or putting it another way, | 27:02 | |
| only those who mourn are comforted. | 27:04 | |
| There is no comfort for those who do not offer their tears. | 27:09 | |
| Or putting it another way, | 27:17 | |
| we receive only at the level at which we let go. | 27:19 | |
| So these gifts lie before us | 27:27 | |
| waiting to be given and to be received. | 27:31 | |
| It is possible to anchor these gifts | 27:37 | |
| deep in human experiences, | 27:39 | |
| as deep as life broken, | 27:42 | |
| as deep as blood shed. | 27:47 | |
| These gifts represent our experiences | 27:51 | |
| as we wander, hoping and despairing between life and death, | 27:55 | |
| and they represent the response of another, | 28:01 | |
| God in Christ to these experiences. | 28:06 | |
| The transformation which is to be found in that response | 28:11 | |
| takes place at the level that which the gift is offered. | 28:18 | |
| If we offer our despair, hope breaks through. | 28:24 | |
| If we lay bare our weakness, | 28:30 | |
| there is a resurgence of strength. | 28:33 | |
| If we weep, there may yet be comfort. | 28:37 | |
| If we come face to face with our wickedness, | 28:42 | |
| we may yet see the goodness of God | 28:46 | |
| in the land of the living. | 28:50 | |
| We receive only at the level at which we let go. | 28:54 | |
| The transformation sought comes in the meeting of two lives: | 29:00 | |
| one anchored in your life, | 29:08 | |
| the other anchored in the life of another, who is Christ. | 29:12 | |
| We are asked to risk being present | 29:19 | |
| in the presence of another, | 29:24 | |
| to offer what we are | 29:27 | |
| at the level at which we need to be met. | 29:29 | |
| The first miracle is being present to another. | 29:35 | |
| The second miracle is the transformation which occurs | 29:41 | |
| when another is present to us. | 29:46 | |
| Amen. | 29:51 | |

| Holy Father, | 38:32 | |
| who, through the of thy Son, | 38:34 | |
| has consecrated for us a new and living way | 38:37 | |
| to the throne of grace, | 38:40 | |
| we come to thee through him, unworthy as we are. | 38:43 | |
| We come to commemorate the First Supper of our Lord, | 38:47 | |
| remembering his passion and death, | 38:52 | |
| believing in his promise of resurrection, | 38:55 | |
| and longing to recognize his presence here among us. | 38:58 | |
| We offer unto thee, oh Lord, | 39:03 | |
| the fruits of our labors for the work of thy church. | 39:06 | |
| We offer our lives to be renewed and used for thy purposes. | 39:10 | |
| We offer unto thee the bread of the earth | 39:15 | |
| and the fruit of the vine | 39:18 | |
| to be hallowed in our communion. | 39:19 | |
| Accept them, oh Lord; | 39:23 | |
| send down by spirit of light and power, of glory and love | 39:25 | |
| upon this people, upon this bread and wine, | 39:32 | |
| that to us, they may be his body and his blood. | 39:36 | |
| Amen. | 39:43 | |
| Lift up your hearts. | 40:13 | |
| - | We lift them up unto the Lord. | 40:14 |
| - | Let us give thanks unto the Lord. | 40:17 |
| - | It is meet and right so to do. | 40:19 |
| - | It is very meet, right, and our bound and duty, | 40:23 |
| but we should at all times | 40:27 | |
| and in all places, give thanks unto thee, | 40:29 | |
| oh Lord, holy Father, almighty, everlasting God. | 40:32 | |
| Therefore, with angels and archangels | 40:37 | |

| Let us offer unto God the prayers of consecration. | 41:25 | |
| Almighty God, our heavenly Father, who of thy tender mercy, | 41:31 | |
| didst give thine only Son, Jesus Christ, | 41:35 | |
| to suffer death upon the cross for our redemption; | 41:38 | |
| who made there by the one offering of himself, | 41:42 | |
| a full, perfect, and sufficient sacrifice | 41:46 | |
| for the sins of the whole world, | 41:49 | |
| and did institute and in his holy gospel, | 41:52 | |
| command us to continue a perpetual memory | 41:54 | |
| of his precious death until his coming again. | 41:57 | |
| Hear us, oh merciful Father, we most humbly beseech thee; | 42:01 | |
| and grant that we receiving these, | 42:06 | |
| thy creatures of bread and wine, | 42:08 | |
| according to thy Son, our savior, | 42:11 | |
| Jesus Christ's holy institution, | 42:13 | |
| and remembrance of his passion, death, and resurrection, | 42:16 | |
| may be partakers of the divine nature through him. | 42:20 | |
| But when the same night that he was betrayed, took bread, | 42:25 | |
| and when he had given thanks, he broke it | 42:30 | |
| and gave it to his disciples saying, "Take, eat. | 42:33 | |
| This is my body which is given for you. | 42:38 | |
| Do this in remembrance of me." | 42:41 | |
| Likewise, after supper, he took the cup, | 42:45 | |
| and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them saying, | 42:48 | |
| "Drink ye all of this | 42:52 | |
| for this is my blood of the new covenant, | 42:54 | |
| which is shed for you and for many, | 42:58 | |
| for the forgiveness of sins. | 43:00 | |
| Do this as oft as you shall drink it | 43:03 | |
| in remembrance of me," amen. | 43:06 | |
| Let us pray together. | 43:10 | |
| We do not presume to come to this, thy table, | 43:13 | |
| oh merciful Lord, trusting in our own righteousness, | 43:16 | |
| but in thy manifold and great mercies. | 43:20 | |
| We are not worthy so much | 43:24 | |
| as to gather up the crumbs under thy table, | 43:26 | |
| but thou art the same Lord, | 43:29 | |
| whose property is always to have mercy. | 43:31 | |
| Grant us therefore, gracious Lord, | 43:35 | |
| so to partake of this sacrament of thy Son, Jesus Christ, | 43:37 | |
| that we may walk in newness of life, | 43:42 | |
| may grow into his likeness, | 43:45 | |
| and may evermore dwell in him and he in us, amen. | 43:48 | |
| When you come now to the supper of the Lord, | 46:26 | |
| at the direction of the ushers. | 46:29 | |
| Jesus said, "I am the vine, you are the branches. | 48:31 | |
| By this, my Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit | 48:36 | |
| and so prove to be my disciples." | 48:40 | |
| Rise and go in peace with courage. | 48:42 | |
| May the glory of your life be the fruits of the spirit, | 48:46 | |
| amen. | 48:50 | |
| (gentle music) | 48:53 | |
| Jesus said, "I am the bread of life; | 51:07 | |
| he who comes to me shall not hunger | 51:10 | |
| and he who believes in me shall never thirst." | 51:13 | |
| Rise and go in peace with courage | 51:16 | |
| and may the bread of heaven nourish your soul | 51:19 | |
| into everlasting life, amen. | 51:21 | |
| Will the congregation come to communion | 51:49 | |

| Arise and go in peace with courage, | 53:57 | |

| and whoever loses his life for my sake will find it." | 56:23 | |
| Rise and go in peace with courage, | 56:29 | |
