| Let us pray. | 3:49 | |
| Almighty God. | 3:51 | |
| Our Heavenly Father, | 3:52 | |
| who didst cause light to shine out of darkness | 3:54 | |
| in the birth of our Lord Jesus Christ, | 3:58 | |

| we humbly confess our transgressions, | 4:04 | |

| that the spirit of Christ may be born anew within us. | 4:35 | |
| Amen. | 4:40 | |
| And let us read together the comfortable words | 4:45 | |
| of the assurance of sin forgiven, | 4:48 | |
| as they are found in the hymnal 654, | 4:51 | |
| "By grace you have been saved." | 4:57 | |
| Let the congregation remain seated. | 5:01 | |
| "By grace you have been saved. | 5:06 | |
| And you He made alive, | 5:09 | |
| when you were dead through the trespasses | 5:12 | |
| and sins in which you once walked, | 5:14 | |
| following the course of this world. | 5:17 | |
| But God, who is rich in mercy, | 5:20 | |
| out of the great love with which He loved us, | 5:24 | |
| even when we were dead through our trespasses, | 5:27 | |
| made us alive together with Christ, | 5:30 | |
| and raised us up with Him. | 5:34 | |
| And made us sit with Him | 5:36 | |
| in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, | 5:38 | |
| that in the coming ages | 5:42 | |
| He might show the immeasurable riches of His grace. | 5:43 | |
| For by grace you have been saved through faith, | 5:48 | |
| and this is not your own doing. | 5:52 | |
| It is the gift of God. | 5:55 | |
| Not because of works, | 5:57 | |
| lest any man should boast, | 6:00 | |
| for we are His workmanship | 6:02 | |

| - | Let us hear the word of God as it's recorded. | 10:27 |
| First, in the book of the Prophet Isaiah. | 10:32 | |
| Three verses from chapter nine. | 10:34 | |
| "The people who walked in darkness, have seen a great light. | 10:40 | |
| Those who dwelt in a land of deep darkness, | 10:45 | |
| on them has light shined. | 10:49 | |
| For unto us a child is born. | 10:53 | |
| Unto us a Son is given. | 10:58 | |
| And the government will be upon his shoulder. | 11:03 | |
| And his name will be called Wonderful Counselor, | 11:07 | |
| Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. | 11:12 | |
| Of the increase of his government and of peace | 11:19 | |
| there will be no end, | 11:23 | |
| upon the throne of David and over his kingdom, | 11:25 | |
| to establish it and to uphold it with justice | 11:29 | |
| and with righteousness | 11:33 | |
| from this time forth and forevermore. | 11:35 | |
| The zeal of the Lord of hosts will do this." | 11:40 | |
| And it in the Gospel according to St. Luke, | 11:48 | |
| the second chapter, verses eight to 14. | 11:51 | |
| "And in that region there were shepherds out in the field, | 11:59 | |
| keeping watch over their flock by night. | 12:03 | |
| And an angel of the Lord appeared to them, | 12:07 | |
| and the glory of the Lord shone around them, | 12:09 | |
| and they were filled with fear. | 12:13 | |
| And the angel said to them, "Be not afraid, for behold, | 12:17 | |
| I bring you good news of a great joy, | 12:23 | |
| which will come to all the people. | 12:27 | |
| For unto you is born this day in the city of David, | 12:31 | |
| a Savior, who is Christ the Lord. | 12:35 | |
| And this will be a sign for you: | 12:41 | |
| you will find a babe wrapped in swaddling cloths | 12:44 | |
| and lying in a manger." | 12:49 | |
| And suddenly there was with the angel | 12:52 | |
| a multitude of the heavenly host | 12:54 | |
| praising God and saying, | 12:57 | |
| "Glory to God in the highest, | 12:59 | |
| and on earth peace among men with whom he is pleased." | 13:03 | |
| Amen. | 13:13 | |

| O God, may the words of my mouth, | 20:04 | |
| and the meditations of our hearts, | 20:08 | |
| be acceptable in Thy sight, | 20:11 | |
| O Lord, our Strength and our Redeemer. | 20:14 | |
| Amen. | 20:18 | |
| "Unto you." You've heard the words a hundred times, | 20:23 | |
| a thousand times, as I have. | 20:29 | |
| Heard them as part of the Christmas narrative, | 20:32 | |
| of sermons, of the soprano recitative in the "Messiah". | 20:36 | |
| "And the angel said unto them, 'Fear not. | 20:42 | |
| For behold I bring you good tidings of great joy, | 20:47 | |
| which will be to all people. | 20:51 | |
| For unto you is born this day, in the city of David, | 20:54 | |
| a Savior, which is Christ, the Lord." | 20:58 | |
| Quite suddenly one day, however, | 21:03 | |
| I realized that these familiar words were out of place. | 21:06 | |
| They were spoken to the wrong people. | 21:11 | |
| They were not addressed to Joseph and Mary, | 21:14 | |
| the parents of the Child, about Whom the angel spoke, | 21:17 | |
| but to a group of shepherds, | 21:21 | |
| who had nothing to do with the Baby born in their midst. | 21:23 | |
| Why say, "Unto you", to the shepherds? | 21:28 | |
| Was it because they were relatives of Joseph, | 21:33 | |
| and thus able to feel that the baby belonged | 21:37 | |
| to their own family? | 21:39 | |
| Yes, this would be quite possible | 21:41 | |
| in a tightly-knit community, | 21:44 | |
| with which Joseph did have family ties; | 21:47 | |
| even though for many years | 21:51 | |
| he had been living in a distant city. | 21:53 | |
| But there's nothing else to show | 21:56 | |
| that any of the shepherds | 21:57 | |
| had close blood relationship to Joseph, | 21:59 | |
| or to the promised Child. | 22:03 | |
| Was it because they were Bethlehemites? | 22:06 | |
| This is much more likely, | 22:10 | |
| for that community had a strong sense of history, | 22:12 | |
| and reflected with some pride on their associations | 22:18 | |
| with King David of long ago. | 22:21 | |
| If what the vision proclaimed were true, | 22:25 | |
| then the birth of a new leader in Bethlehem | 22:29 | |
| would certainly be something to add to civic pride. | 22:32 | |
| Or did the angels say, "Unto you is born this day | 22:38 | |
| in the city of David, a Savior," | 22:43 | |
| to this handful of shepherds, | 22:45 | |
| simply because they were Jews, | 22:47 | |
| representatives of the many thousands | 22:50 | |
| who were looking and longing for a Messiah, a Savior; | 22:53 | |
| not only from the Romans, but from sin and frustration? | 22:58 | |
| Maybe this, at last, was the Good News, | 23:04 | |
| for which they had been waiting. | 23:07 | |
| And it came to them as members of the Jewish people. | 23:10 | |
| In that case, this was indeed a red letter day for them. | 23:14 | |
| Yet, the context makes it clear | 23:20 | |
| that this intimate manner of speaking | 23:22 | |
| arose from none of these reasons, | 23:25 | |
| but was used simply because they were ordinary people. | 23:28 | |
| The message, "Unto you," came to them as human beings. | 23:33 | |
| They were the chosen representatives | 23:39 | |
| of the whole human race. | 23:41 | |
| "I bring you good tidings, which shall be to all people." | 23:45 | |
| There is a sense in which the basic events | 23:54 | |
| of birth, marriage, death, | 23:57 | |
| in some mysterious way, | 24:01 | |
| bring all people together as one family. | 24:03 | |
| In these events, all are one. | 24:07 | |
| Barriers and shynesses are forgotten; | 24:11 | |
| differences of race and color and culture and creed. | 24:15 | |
| Particularly is this the case, when a baby is born. | 24:20 | |
| All the world loves a baby. | 24:25 | |
| Yet for the shepherds, this was not mere sentimentality. | 24:28 | |
| These men were rough fellows; | 24:33 | |
| ready to haggle in the marketplace, | 24:36 | |
| to tangle in a brawl, when they had had too much to drink, | 24:39 | |
| ready to fight grimly for their right, | 24:43 | |
| if anyone encroached on their territory. | 24:46 | |
| But they were also men | 24:50 | |
| with a warm tenderness for their own children, | 24:51 | |
| and protective toward all children; | 24:55 | |
| ready to lay down their lives even for their sheep. | 24:59 | |
| They were indeed in their changing moods, | 25:03 | |
| their strange blend of good and evil, | 25:07 | |
| their love of the earth, | 25:10 | |
| and their occasional glimpses of heaven, ordinary people. | 25:12 | |
| This is what makes their singling out so important. | 25:19 | |
| Indeed, you might say that they were not singled out, | 25:22 | |
| they were picked blindfold with a pin. | 25:26 | |
| The symbol of sacrifice and courage in war, | 25:30 | |
| is an unknown soldier. | 25:35 | |
| An unknown shepherd is the symbol of God's offer | 25:39 | |
| for human need. | 25:45 | |
| If indeed that promise, | 25:49 | |
| given by the Herald of God to the shepherds, | 25:50 | |
| came to them as representatives of the human race, | 25:53 | |
| then exactly the same promise would be held out | 25:58 | |
| to all people. | 26:01 | |

| to see this thing, which had come to pass, | 32:07 | |
| which the Lord had made known unto them. | 32:10 | |
| In our turn, | 32:13 | |
| we study the beginnings of the Christian religion; | 32:14 | |
| the worldwide impact of the Christian faith | 32:18 | |
| during the centuries, | 32:21 | |
| its effect on those whom we know and respect. | 32:23 | |
| We make our own experiments | 32:28 | |
| in prayerful communication with God, | 32:30 | |
| our own ventures into the unknown, | 32:33 | |
| guided only by the flimsy chart | 32:37 | |
| of an experimental belief in Christ. | 32:39 | |
| And hopefully we find, as millions have found before us, | 32:44 | |
| that it works. Christianity is true. | 32:49 | |
| Second, we thank God for the fulfillment of his prophecy. | 32:55 | |
| The shepherds returned, | 33:01 | |
| glorifying and praising God for all | 33:03 | |
| the things that they had seen and heard, | 33:06 | |
| as it was told unto them. | 33:08 | |
| We in our turn read the old story, | 33:11 | |
| look back wishfully on memories of childhood, | 33:15 | |
| try to escape for a time | 33:19 | |
| from the tinsel and glitter of material prosperity, | 33:21 | |
| stretch out a helping hand | 33:25 | |
| to the multitudes far less fortunate than we. | 33:27 | |
| In our better moments, we are joyful, | 33:32 | |
| with the confidence of those who believe in a saving God. | 33:35 | |
| We realize where true joy comes from. | 33:40 | |
| We try to ensure both the extension of our own joy to others | 33:44 | |
| and its continuance into the future. | 33:49 | |
| We wish each other a Merry Christmas and a happy new year. | 33:53 | |
| But if these highest hopes and hearty greetings | 34:00 | |
| are not to fade in the thin and frosty air, | 34:05 | |
| we must do a third thing: | 34:09 | |
| We must adjust our lives to new circumstances. | 34:11 | |
| Something has happened, | 34:18 | |
| which should change our thoughts and feelings, | 34:20 | |
| change our homes, | 34:23 | |
| change our relationships with other people, with God. | 34:24 | |
| The shepherds couldn't keep what had happened to themselves, | 34:29 | |
| but made known abroad the saying | 34:33 | |
| which was told them, concerning this Child. | 34:36 | |
| A child in the home makes a big difference. | 34:41 | |
| Especially the first child, but each later one, too. | 34:44 | |
| Even when a child who belongs to everybody | 34:50 | |
| comes into our home, it should make a big difference. | 34:54 | |
| And those of us who yet have no children of our own, | 34:59 | |
| or whose children have long grown up, | 35:04 | |
| or who can never hope to have children, | 35:07 | |
| even we have a Child born unto us this Christmas. | 35:11 | |
| Surely we cannot any longer neglect | 35:18 | |
| the one who has been entrusted to us. | 35:22 | |
| No longer put off making the sacrifices that are necessary, | 35:25 | |
| that he may grow in wisdom and in stature | 35:29 | |
| and in favor with God and man. | 35:35 | |
| He relies upon us. | 35:37 | |
| And more than we can imagine, | 35:41 | |
| depends upon our being faithful to our trust. | 35:42 | |
| "Unto you is born," said the angel. | 35:49 | |
| Christians through the long centuries, however, | 35:54 | |
| have linked with these the words of the Prophet Isaiah, | 35:57 | |
| with a change of the second person to the first person: | 36:01 | |
| "Unto us a Child is born. Unto us a Son is given." | 36:06 | |
| And many generations of Christians | 36:13 | |
| have enthusiastically affirmed that, | 36:15 | |
| in personal life, in national life, in international life, | 36:18 | |
| all that God-inspired Isaiah said about the coming One, | 36:22 | |
| was true. Gloriously true. | 36:25 | |
| "The government shall be upon His shoulder | 36:28 | |
| and His name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, | 36:32 | |
| The Mighty God, The Everlasting Father, | 36:38 | |
| The Prince of Peace." | 36:40 | |
| Let us hear the testimony of one of these later Christians, | 36:43 | |
| who insisted that "Unto you" meant "Unto us". | 36:47 | |
| Charles Wesley wrote a poem based on the nativity story. | 36:53 | |
| And especially upon the angel's message | 36:58 | |
| in Luke chapter two verse 11. | 36:59 | |
| "Unto you is born this day". | 37:02 | |
| It was found in manuscript after his death | 37:06 | |
| and first published in a supplement | 37:09 | |
| to the Methodist hymn book in 1830. | 37:10 | |
| He speaks as a shepherd who has heard the universal message. | 37:13 | |
| And also as a Christian, | 37:18 | |
| who gladly welcomes the Child and Savior | 37:21 | |
| to his own heart and home. | 37:25 | |
| "To us a child of royal birth, | 37:28 | |
| Heir of the promises, is given; | 37:32 | |
| the Invisible appears on earth, | 37:36 | |
| The Son of Man, the God of heaven. | 37:40 | |
| A Savior born, in love supreme | 37:45 | |
| He comes our fallen souls to raise; | 37:48 | |
| He comes his people to redeem | 37:52 | |
| with all his plenitude of grace. | 37:56 | |
| The Christ by raptured seers foretold, | 38:00 | |
| Filled with the eternal Spirit's power, | 38:04 | |
| Prophet, and Priest, and King behold, | 38:08 | |
| And Lord of all the worlds adore. | 38:12 | |
| The Lord of hosts, | 38:17 | |
| the God most high, | 38:18 | |
| Who quits his throne on earth to live, | 38:20 | |
| With joy we welcome from the sky, | 38:25 | |
| With faith into our hearts receive." | 38:29 | |
| Let us, also, this day return to our homes, | 38:35 | |
| glorifying and praising God | 38:42 | |
| for all that we have seen and heard. | 38:44 | |
| Let us resolve | 38:48 | |
| that the promised Savior is indeed to be our Lord, | 38:49 | |
| the Lord of our jobs, of our recreation, of our hearts. | 38:55 | |
| Of every molecule, every moment, every memory, every motive. | 39:02 | |
