The Old Testament lesson is from Isaiah 2:1-5. | 19:05
The word which Isaiah, the son of Amoz saw | 19:14
concerning Judah and Jerusalem. | 19:17
It shall come to pass in the latter days | 19:21
that the mountain of the house of the Lord | 19:24
shall be established as the highest of the mountains | 19:27
and shall be raised above the hills. | 19:31
And all the nations shall flow to it. | 19:34
And many people shall come and say, | 19:37
come let us go up to the mountain of the Lord, | 19:40
to the house of the God of Jacob, | 19:43
that he may teach us his ways, | 19:46
and that we may walk in his paths. | 19:49
For out of Zion shall go forth the law. | 19:52
And the word of the Lord from Jerusalem. | 19:56
He shall judge between the nations | 19:59
and shall decide for many peoples. | 20:02
And they shall beat their swords into plowshares, | 20:05
and their spears into pruning hooks. | 20:08
Nation shall not lift up sword against nation. | 20:11
Neither shall they learn war anymore. | 20:15
Oh house of Jacob, | 20:18
come let us walk in the light of the Lord. | 20:20
Here ends the reading of the Old Testament, amen. | 20:25
The epistle lesson is from Romans 13:11-14. | 20:31
Besides this, you know what hour it is, | 20:40
how it is full time now for you to wake from sleep. | 20:44
For salvation is nearer to us now | 20:49
than when we first believed. | 20:52
The night is far gone. | 20:54
The day is at hand. | 20:56
Let us then cast off the works of darkness | 20:59
and put on the armor of light. | 21:02
Let us conduct ourselves becomingly as in the day, | 21:05
not in reveling and drunkenness, | 21:08
not in debauchery and licentiousness, | 21:11
not in quarreling and jealousy. | 21:15
But put on the Lord Jesus Christ | 21:17
and make no provision for the flesh | 21:21
to gratify its desires. | 21:23

The gospel lesson is from Matthew 24:36-44. | 27:13
But of that day and hour, no one knows. | 27:22
Not even the angels of heaven, nor the Son, | 27:25
but the Father only. | 27:29
As were the days of Noah, | 27:31
so will be the coming of the Son of Man. | 27:33
For as in those days before the flood, | 27:36
they were eating and drinking, | 27:39
marrying and giving in marriage, | 27:41
until the day when Noah entered the ark. | 27:44
And they did not know until the flood came | 27:47
and swept them all away. | 27:50
So will be the coming of the Son of Man. | 27:52
Then two men will be in the field. | 27:56
One is taken and one is left. | 27:59
Two women will be grinding at the mill. | 28:02
One is taken and one is left. | 28:04
Watch therefore, | 28:08

when I was about seven or eight | 34:16
and I had been to a neighbor's house. | 34:19
And all the folks who happened to be there that afternoon | 34:23

And about that time it started to storm. | 34:35
And thunder and lightning flashed and sounded all around. | 34:39
And the wind and the rain blew. | 34:42
And I thought the Lord was on his way. | 34:45
And it scared me to death. | 34:48
That may be why I'm still afraid of thunder and lightning. | 34:56
I'm afraid the Lord's gonna be on one of those | 34:59
bolts of lightning. | 35:02
Why have I been afraid? | 35:05
My infantile, juvenile, | 35:11
immature, | 35:14 | |
non-understanding, | 35:15
self-centered desire | 35:16
to live and grow, | 35:19 | |
and have my own way, | 35:20
to live out my life according to my plans, | 35:23
and my desires, | 35:25 | |
to want my way and not God's way, | 35:26
for me and mine, | 35:28 | |
and us, and ours, | 35:30 | |
and for our world, | 35:31
and the coming of Christ, | 35:32
God's coming again in Christ's second Advent | 35:33
would surely mess up all of that. | 35:36
Why can we not? | 35:42 | |
Why do we not really, truly, | 35:44
honestly pray rather than just say the words? | 35:47
Why do we not really honestly pray, | 35:50
thy kingdom come Lord, | 35:53
thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven? | 35:55
That's all Paul and Jesus are talking about. | 36:02
That's all. | 36:06 | |
That's all. | 36:08 | |
And that is right. | 36:16
That is holy. | 36:18 | |
That is life. | 36:21 | |
And that is God's way. | 36:24
The word is saying to us | 36:27
what one of the great prayers of the church is saying. | 36:29
Eternal God, | 36:32 | |
who commits to us the swift and solemn trust of life, | 36:34
since we know not what a day may bring forth, | 36:37
but only that the hour for serving thee is always present, | 36:41
may we wake to the instant claims of thy holy will, | 36:45
not waiting for tomorrow, | 36:49
but yielding to today. | 36:51
God is simply calling us to live. | 36:54
The word is speaking to all those | 36:58
who refuse to accept life as it is | 37:01
simply because it wasn't always this way. | 37:04
And it need not be this way. | 37:11
Whatever this way is for you, | 37:14
it need not be this way forever. | 37:16
For us individually or for us all over the world. | 37:20
God is simply calling us to choose life, | 37:24
to live, not to wait, or waste, | 37:27
or tarry, or linger, | 37:29
or put off, or delay, | 37:31
or postpone, or neglect, or ignore | 37:32
the magnanimous and the majestic claim or invitation | 37:36
one moment longer. | 37:40
Life, as James Kavanaugh puts it in his little book, | 37:43
Celebrate The Sun, | 37:47
life is learned from suffering and joy, | 37:48
love and friendship. | 37:52
Life is learned from living. | 37:53
Now watch. | 37:59 | |
Be ready. | 38:02 | |
The night is far gone and the day is at hand. | 38:04
If we are to have our fears and anxieties, | 38:07
if you have any at all about this, | 38:09
if we are to have our fears and anxieties | 38:11
relieved about any of these matters, | 38:13
we must understand, I believe, | 38:15
the theological, biblical, | 38:17
and personal meanings of the word-symbols night and day. | 38:19
If the night is far gone really means what I think it means, | 38:25
then the darkness and the fearsomeness of night | 38:31
are almost gone. | 38:34 | |
Symbolically the word is saying then | 38:37
that the evil of life is almost over. | 38:40
The heaviness and emptiness of spirit are near their end. | 38:43
That the sin of the soul, | 38:49
the destructiveness of the demonic, | 38:50
the savageness of Satan, | 38:52
the power and pull, and influence of evil, | 38:54
are now far gone. | 38:58 | |
Is this not what the night which is far gone means? | 39:02
If the day is at hand means what I think it means, | 39:11
then the hope and the promise, | 39:14
and the fulfillment of God's love are also near at hand. | 39:16
Symbolically I believe, | 39:19
the word is saying that the day of peace for all, | 39:20
the time when the lion and the lamb will lie down | 39:24
side by side, | 39:28 | |
the time when justice will roll down like waters | 39:30
and righteousness like an ever-flowing stream, | 39:34
the time when none of God's children, pray God, | 39:38
none of God's children will want, | 39:43
when there will be bread, and water, and food | 39:46
for body and for spirit for all, | 39:49
the time when the water of life which flows | 39:56
from that tree of life | 40:00
brings to all of us the healing of the nations, | 40:03
is this not | 40:08 | |
the day which is at hand? | 40:11
Paul writes, the night is far gone. | 40:16
The day is at hand. | 40:20
Let us then cast off the works of darkness | 40:22
and put on the armor of light. | 40:24
Put on the Lord Jesus Christ. | 40:26
All of this raises for me a question. | 40:31
Namely, why is there such a great preponderance | 40:35
of writings like this in scripture? | 40:40
Is this God's way to win and woo you and me | 40:47
and all other children of God? | 40:51
In the Old Testament, in the New Testament, | 40:55
in the Gospels, in Paul's writings, | 40:58
in Revelation, | 41:00 | |
teachings and parables, | 41:02
and stories and writings like this | 41:03
stream forth from the word of God, why? | 41:05
Is this the only way, by fear? | 41:12
Is this the only way to get people to follow the way? | 41:15
If so, it hasn't worked has it? | 41:22
I think there is a preponderance of literature | 41:29
like this in the word | 41:33
because the night is always far gone, | 41:35
and the day is always at hand for all of us | 41:39
all the time. | 41:46 | |
The night is far gone. | 41:48
It was for those who were around Jesus. | 41:50
Mary and Joseph, who understood not who Jesus was. | 41:55
Simeon whose eyes had seen the glory of the Lord | 42:00
when they looked upon Jesus. | 42:03
For John the Baptist, | 42:05
not worthy even to tie the sandals of his Lord. | 42:06
The night was far gone for Peter's mother-in-law | 42:10
who lay dying. | 42:13 | |
For Nicodemus who chose to come to Jesus by night. | 42:15
For Zacchaeus, so eager to find life | 42:18
that he climbed a tree and then took Jesus home with him. | 42:21
For the hemophiliac woman | 42:25
who wanted simply to touch the hem of Jesus' garment. | 42:27
The night was far gone for the whore | 42:32
who was accused by the crowd on the beach. | 42:35
For the woman who insisted | 42:40
on washing Jesus' feet with her ointment | 42:42
and drying his feet with the hair of her head. | 42:44
The night is far gone for Judas. | 42:48
For those who slept while Jesus prayed. | 42:56
For Caiaphas and Pilate. | 43:01
For Peter on that fateful Friday morning. | 43:05
For the crowd who would not release Jesus. | 43:09
For one thief. | 43:14 | |
For a second thief. | 43:17
For John at the foot of the cross. | 43:20
For Mary at the cross. | 43:21
The night is always far gone for Jesus, | 43:24
and for those around Jesus, | 43:27
and for us. | 43:30 | |
The day is at hand for Mary. | 43:34
My soul, she cried, | 43:39
my soul doth magnify the Lord. | 43:42
For Simeon, mine eyes have seen thy salvation. | 43:47
Lord now letest thou thy servant depart in peace. | 43:53
For Peter, thou art the Christ, | 43:58
the son of the living God. | 44:00
The day was at hand for Zacchaeus, | 44:03
for Jesus said after he went home with him, | 44:05
surely salvation has come to your house this day. | 44:07
For the centurion at the foot of the cross, | 44:11
surely this man was the Son of God. | 44:13
For Mary, | 44:20 | |
the Lord is risen. | 44:23
For the two strangers on the road, | 44:28
did not our hearts burn within us? | 44:30
For Thomas | 44:34 | |
who touched the wound in Jesus' side and said, | 44:36
my Lord and my God? | 44:40
The night is far gone. | 44:44
The day is at hand, always, | 44:45
for all of us, | 44:52 | |
all the time. | 44:54 | |
For I believe we're like John. | 44:57
We really are always looking for the one who is to come. | 44:58
And if this he or she is not the one, | 45:01
we ask like John the Baptist, | 45:04
are we to look for another? | 45:06
Are we really? | 45:09 | |
The night is far gone. | 45:13
The day is at hand. | 45:15
But put on the Lord Jesus Christ. | 45:17
You know it's the buts and the therefores in scripture | 45:20
that really do us in. | 45:23
We hear a simple statement, | 45:27
or we hear a simple story, | 45:28
and it sounds simple and easy. | 45:33
And then, but, | 45:36 | |
go ye and do likewise. | 45:39
Or therefore. | 45:41 | |
But put on the Lord Jesus Christ. | 45:44
The first time I read these words and studied them | 45:47
in the interpreters Bible, | 45:51
I wrote in the margins several years ago | 45:53
what does that mean? | 45:56
What does it mean to put on the Lord Jesus Christ? | 46:01
Well I didn't know years ago | 46:06
when I wrote that in the margin, | 46:08
and I'm not so sure that I know even now. | 46:09
We use words often in preaching and teaching, | 46:12
and in talking about the Christian faith | 46:16
that sound good but we don't always know | 46:18
or understand what we mean when we say them. | 46:20
What does it mean to say put on the Lord Jesus Christ? | 46:23
I'm still not sure, | 46:30
but it may mean something like this. | 46:31
Be gentle as he was. | 46:36
Be faithful as he was. | 46:41
Be kind. | 46:46 | |
Be human. | 46:48 | |
Be tough and firm in the face of authorities. | 46:51
Be strong to condemn evil, and injustice, | 46:55
and oppression as he was. | 46:58
Be compassionate, | 47:01
compassionate toward all. | 47:03
Be obedient, | 47:07 | |
obedient to God as Jesus was. | 47:10
Be humble, unassuming, | 47:13
unpretentious. | 47:16 | |
Be prayerful. | 47:19 | |
Pray in the morning, in the night, | 47:21
with a crowd, all alone, | 47:23
on the mountains, | 47:25
when you go away by yourself. | 47:27
Stand with those who have no one else to stand with them. | 47:30
Walk with those who, | 47:33
if you were not walking with them, | 47:34
would walk all by themselves. | 47:36
Cry with those who grieve. | 47:40
Drink and rejoice with those who celebrate. | 47:43
Be loving. | 47:46 | |
Be loving. | 47:49 | |
Be loving again. | 47:52 | |
Put on the Lord Jesus Christ. | 47:57
That my friends is the day which is at hand. | 48:01
And you and I can be as Jesus was. | 48:06
We can know that day. | 48:08
For Christ has come and Christ has come to make us | 48:11
who we are intended to be. | 48:15
As a matter of fact, | 48:17
as Carlyle Marney once said, | 48:18
you already are | 48:20 | |
who you wish you were in Christ. | 48:24
You already are | 48:32 | |
who you wish you were in Christ. | 48:34
I don't really know how to say put on the Lord Jesus Christ. | 48:44
I don't even know how to do it myself. | 48:49
But if I were going to suggest a thing or two, | 48:55
let me suggest this. | 49:00
I believe it means to surrender yourself | 49:07
and ask for the presence of Christ | 49:13
to become real in your life. | 49:15
Ask for it. | 49:19 | |
And as I say these words, | 49:22
there's a part of me that kind of recoils | 49:23
because this all sounds so simple and childish. | 49:25
But I really don't know any other words to use | 49:37
than to say, as Paul did, | 49:41
put on the Lord Jesus Christ. | 49:44
Or to say, ask, | 49:52 | |
seek, knock. | 49:55 | |
Ask and ye shall receive. | 50:02
Knock and ye shall find. | 50:03
Knock and it shall be opened to you. | 50:06
Seek and ye shall find. | 50:08
And pray. | 50:12 | |
Pray in whatever words you use. | 50:15
And if there's a little voice inside you that is there, | 50:19
I think as the inheritance of generations of unfaith | 50:23
that most of us have grown up around. | 50:28
If a little voice inside of you cries out and says, | 50:31
but I don't believe, I don't believe, | 50:33
don't worry too much. | 50:40
Let's just keep on and on. | 50:44
Lord I believe, help my unbelief, | 50:50
may be the best we can ever say. | 50:53
But the beauty of it is that that's enough. | 50:58
Seek and you will find. | 51:07
This presence of Christ, of God's love to heal, | 51:10
to give peace, | 51:14 | |
and at last | 51:15 | |
something like real life will come. | 51:20
And then you and I my friends can get up and live. | 51:26
But we must seek first. | 51:29
And to pray is the way. | 51:34
We must work at it. | 51:39
It's like playing a new game as a child. | 51:41
We have to learn as we go because | 51:44
prayer for many of us is so foreign. | 51:46
It is so very, very hard. | 51:50
And yet it is so very easy. | 51:52
And everything in life and in death, | 51:54
in this life and in the life to come, | 51:56
everything I believe depends on that. | 51:58
Seek, ask, | 52:01 | |
knock, pray, | 52:02 | |
put on the Lord Jesus Christ. | 52:03
And by God's grace we will find. | 52:10
In Christ's name and with Christ's power | 52:16
I promise you just that. | 52:19
My guess is most of you have seen the poster | 52:27
quoting Camus, | 52:30 | |
the existentialist French philosopher playwright. | 52:33

an invincible summer. | 52:51
