| - | The Lord is good to all | 18:10 |
| and his compassion is over all that he has made. | 18:14 | |
| Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel, | 18:19 | |
| who alone does wondrous things. | 18:24 | |
| Blessed be his glorious name forever. | 18:29 | |
| May his glory fill the whole earth. | 18:34 | |
| Let us pray. | 18:39 | |
| Almighty and everlasting God, | 18:46 | |
| in whom we live and move and have our being, | 18:51 | |
| who hast created us for thyself | 18:57 | |
| so that our hearts are restless | 19:01 | |
| until they find rest in thee. | 19:05 | |
| Grant unto us such purity of heart | 19:09 | |
| and strength of purpose | 19:14 | |
| that no selfish passion may hinder us from knowing thy will | 19:17 | |
| and no weakness from doing it. | 19:23 | |
| In thy light, may we see life clearly | 19:27 | |
| and in thy service find perfect freedom | 19:32 | |
| through Jesus Christ our Lord, | 19:38 | |
| amen. | 19:42 | |

| When we gather to praise God, | 22:27 | |
| we remember that we are the people of God | 22:29 | |
| who have preferred our wills to the divine will | 22:33 | |
| accepting the power God offers us | 22:39 | |
| to become new persons in Christ. | 22:42 | |
| Let us confess our sin | 22:45 | |
| before God and one another. | 22:48 | |
| Let us pray. | 23:01 | |
| Most merciful God, | 23:05 | |
| we confess that we have sinned against you | 23:07 | |
| in thought, word, and deed. | 23:11 | |
| We have not loved you with our whole heart. | 23:15 | |
| We have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. | 23:20 | |
| We pray you of your mercy. | 23:25 | |
| Forgive what we have been. | 23:29 | |
| Amend what we are, | 23:32 | |
| direct what we shall be | 23:35 | |
| that we may delight in your will | 23:38 | |
| and walk in your ways | 23:42 | |
| through Jesus Christ our Lord, | 23:45 | |
| amen. | 23:49 | |
| Hear the good news, | 23:52 | |
| Christ died for us while we were yet sinners. | 23:54 | |
| That is God's own proof of his love toward us. | 24:00 | |
| In the name of Jesus Christ, you are forgiven. | 24:06 | |
| Glory to God, amen. | 24:18 | |
| - | Let us pray. | 24:41 |
| Prepare our hearts, oh, Lord, to accept your word. | 24:46 | |
| Silence in us any voice but your own | 24:50 | |
| that hearing we may also obey your will | 24:54 | |
| through Jesus Christ our Lord, amen. | 24:57 | |
| Will the congregation please stand | 25:04 | |
| for the reading of the Gospel lesson? | 25:06 | |
| The Gospel lesson is from John chapter four, | 25:14 | |
| versus seven through 26. | 25:18 | |
| "There came a woman of Samaria to draw water. | 25:22 | |
| "Jesus said to her, give me a drink. | 25:26 | |
| "For his disciples had gone away into the city to buy food. | 25:30 | |
| "The Samaritan woman said to him, | 25:35 | |
| "How is it that you a Jew, ask a drink of me, | 25:38 | |
| "a woman of Samaria? | 25:42 | |
| "For Jews have no dealings with Samaritans. | 25:45 | |
| "Jesus answered her, if you knew the gift of God, | 25:49 | |
| "and who it is that is saying to you, Give me a drink, | 25:54 | |
| "you would have asked him, | 25:58 | |
| "and he would have given you living water. | 26:00 | |
| "The woman said to him, Sir, | 26:04 | |
| "you have nothing to draw with and the well is deep. | 26:06 | |
| "Where do you get that living water? | 26:11 | |
| "Are you greater than our father Jacob | 26:14 | |
| "who gave us the well and drank from it himself, | 26:17 | |
| "and his sons, and his cattle? | 26:21 | |
| "Jesus said to her, Everyone who drinks | 26:25 | |
| "of this water will thirst again. | 26:28 | |
| "But whoever drinks of the water | 26:31 | |
| "that I shall give him will never thirst. | 26:33 | |
| "The water that I shall give him will become | 26:37 | |
| "in him a spring of water, welling up to eternal life. | 26:40 | |
| "The woman said to him, Sir, give me this water | 26:46 | |
| "that I may not thirst, nor come here to draw. | 26:50 | |
| "Jesus said to her, go, call your husband and come here. | 26:55 | |
| "The woman answered him, I have no husband. | 27:01 | |
| "Jesus said to her, you are right in saying, | 27:05 | |
| "I have no husband, for you have had five husbands | 27:09 | |
| "and he whom you now have is not your husband. | 27:14 | |
| "This you said truly. | 27:18 | |
| "The woman said to him, sir, | 27:21 | |
| "I perceive that you are a prophet. | 27:23 | |
| "Our father's worshiped on this mountain | 27:27 | |
| "and you say that in Jerusalem is the place | 27:30 | |
| "where men ought to worship. | 27:33 | |
| "Jesus said to her, woman, believe me, | 27:36 | |
| "the hour is coming when neither on this mountain | 27:40 | |
| "nor in Jerusalem will you worship the father." | 27:44 | |
| "You worship what you do not know. | 27:48 | |
| "We worship what we know for salvation is from the Jews. | 27:51 | |
| "but the hour is coming and now is | 27:56 | |
| "when the true worshipers will worship the father | 28:00 | |
| "in spirit and truth | 28:03 | |
| "for such the father seeks to worship him. | 28:05 | |
| "God is spirit and those who worship him must worship | 28:09 | |
| "in spirit and truth. | 28:14 | |
| "The woman said to him, | 28:16 | |
| "I know that messiah is coming, | 28:18 | |
| "he who is called The Christ. | 28:21 | |
| "When he comes, he will show us all things. | 28:24 | |
| "Jesus said to her, | 28:29 | |
| "I who speak to you am he." | 28:32 | |
| Be seated. | 28:36 | |
| I rejoice in the opportunity to be with you this morning. | 28:47 | |
| I have been dreaming about being here | 28:51 | |
| at Duke for many months now. | 28:54 | |
| It is a joy to be here | 28:56 | |
| on this my first Sunday worshiping with all of you. | 28:58 | |
| And I look forward to many times ahead of us | 29:02 | |
| for we will rejoice and celebrate together | 29:06 | |
| in our common faith and in the love | 29:09 | |
| and spirit of Jesus Christ our Lord | 29:12 | |
| which binds us all together. | 29:15 | |
| I am aware that many of our neighbors | 29:20 | |
| in the southwest and northern plains | 29:24 | |
| on this day are suffering and thirsty people. | 29:27 | |
| After long periods of soaring temperatures and no rain, | 29:32 | |
| an official drought has been declared. | 29:37 | |
| Some Texas communities have already begun to ration water. | 29:41 | |
| Suddenly, the importance of this life-giving liquid | 29:47 | |
| becomes grasped by all of us. | 29:51 | |
| Crops are being burned out | 29:56 | |
| because there is no water available for irrigation. | 29:58 | |
| Livestock are being sold or destroyed | 30:03 | |
| because pasture lands are not grassy and green | 30:07 | |
| as they have been in the past. | 30:10 | |
| And I am told that people are actually dying | 30:13 | |
| of heatstroke and dehydration. | 30:17 | |
| We think we're warm here this morning. | 30:20 | |
| I suppose we're fortunate. | 30:23 | |
| Without water, my friends, | 30:26 | |
| there can be no ongoing life. | 30:29 | |
| Water is crucial, | 30:33 | |
| water is precious | 30:36 | |
| for those of us who know its value. | 30:38 | |
| In a time of drought, | 30:43 | |
| the search for water always intensifies. | 30:45 | |
| But here in Durham, we take for granted | 30:50 | |
| that water will be always available to us | 30:54 | |
| forthcoming from the tap in our homes. | 30:58 | |
| The daily routines of showers and bath, | 31:02 | |
| of cooking and cleaning, of washing dishes, | 31:05 | |
| sprinkling our lawns and even going swimming continues. | 31:09 | |
| And I know that at some of our parties, | 31:14 | |
| I catch ourselves raving about the sparkling goodness | 31:17 | |
| of the champagne of water, Perrier. | 31:22 | |
| Hopefully, in spite of all this, | 31:27 | |
| we are still intentional about our own understanding | 31:31 | |
| and need to conserve our use of water, | 31:35 | |
| even if we do take it for granted. | 31:39 | |
| But my guess is that basically, | 31:42 | |
| we just believe that water will be there for us | 31:45 | |
| as we turn our wrists. | 31:49 | |
| I grew up in Florida, a state literally surrounded by water. | 31:53 | |
| Sometimes the power of water became present | 31:59 | |
| to us there in hurricanes. | 32:03 | |
| During hurricane watches while I was growing up, | 32:07 | |
| my family always prepared for emergency procedures. | 32:11 | |
| And one of my responsibilities as a little girl was to go | 32:16 | |
| and fill up the bathtub full of water | 32:21 | |
| before the hurricane came, | 32:24 | |
| just in case the water supply got cut off. | 32:27 | |
| And on one occasion, which I do remember, | 32:31 | |
| we did have to use some water from the bathtub | 32:34 | |
| before the storm ended. | 32:38 | |
| That early experience in my life began to teach me | 32:41 | |
| the mysteries of this gift | 32:46 | |
| of creation called water. | 32:49 | |
| In Jesus's day, | 32:53 | |
| water was valued as a gift of life. | 32:55 | |
| Without it, there simply was no source of life. | 32:59 | |
| Jesus knew the powerful impact of water in daily life. | 33:04 | |
| He knew that thirst, | 33:10 | |
| that cleansing and healing all came from water. | 33:13 | |
| And on that day when a woman of Samaria came to the well | 33:18 | |
| to draw her daily supply of water, Jesus was there. | 33:23 | |
| He was thirsty and he made a simple request for a drink | 33:29 | |
| from a woman who had a dipper and a bucket in hand. | 33:34 | |
| Jesus's own thirst and the rather startling encounter | 33:39 | |
| that develops by the well focuses | 33:44 | |
| on the life-giving nature of water. | 33:47 | |
| No matter that he was a stranger and a Jew | 33:52 | |
| whom her people despised, | 33:56 | |
| no matter that he was conversing with a woman, | 33:59 | |
| a custom which was not allowed, | 34:03 | |
| this woman must have surely stumbled uncertainly | 34:07 | |
| to the well, wondering what to do. | 34:11 | |
| To the woman of Samaria who had come here, | 34:15 | |
| water was a necessity. | 34:18 | |
| She laboriously carried it from the well each day. | 34:20 | |
| She must have the water to survive. | 34:25 | |
| And here she found herself standing face to face | 34:28 | |
| with a man who asked, even commanded her, | 34:33 | |
| to give him a drink of water. | 34:37 | |
| As they shared this moment, | 34:40 | |
| Jesus began to speak to her of living water | 34:43 | |
| and it became apparent that he had more | 34:48 | |
| than a creature comfort in mind. | 34:52 | |
| In the hot noonday sun, | 34:56 | |
| this odd pair began to confront one another. | 34:58 | |
| They began to argue about religious history, | 35:04 | |
| recalling the gift of the well | 35:08 | |
| that their ancestor Jacob had dug for this town. | 35:10 | |
| This woman was also amazed to know | 35:16 | |
| that this man knew her personal history as well. | 35:19 | |
| In a very straightforward manner, | 35:24 | |
| Jesus named her past and he named her present. | 35:27 | |
| The woman of Samaria then became defensive | 35:33 | |
| and accused him of being a prophet. | 35:36 | |
| She was afraid to receive this gift | 35:40 | |
| that he offered called living water. | 35:44 | |
| She didn't even know what Jesus was talking about | 35:49 | |
| but she began to realize that she was thirsty. | 35:53 | |
| I see that out of Jesus's own thirst for a drink | 35:59 | |
| and out of a Samaritan woman's thirst for life | 36:04 | |
| came the possibility of a water that would satisfy. | 36:08 | |
| When Jesus revealed himself | 36:14 | |
| to be that living water, | 36:17 | |
| the messiah, the well of life and hope, | 36:19 | |
| she came and drank. | 36:24 | |
| She drank of the knowledge that her life did have meaning. | 36:27 | |
| She drank of the knowledge that her past | 36:32 | |
| and present sins were forgiven. | 36:36 | |
| She drank because she had a thirst for life. | 36:39 | |
| It was her longing thirst | 36:44 | |
| and her drinking of faith that cleansed her, | 36:47 | |
| just as Jesus knew it could. | 36:51 | |
| With a clean spirit then and suddenly a hopeful outlook, | 36:56 | |
| her own healing would come | 37:01 | |
| as she would be able | 37:05 | |
| to remember the taste and the power of this water. | 37:06 | |
| Her satisfaction at meeting Jesus | 37:11 | |
| and discovering herself | 37:15 | |
| in the process was deep for her. | 37:17 | |
| She straightway left her water jars and went into the city, | 37:22 | |
| telling the story of the marvelous living water. | 37:27 | |
| Today, I proclaim to you | 37:32 | |
| that Jesus is still our living water. | 37:35 | |
| The messiah, the Christ. | 37:40 | |
| The spirit of Christ stands ready even now | 37:44 | |
| to satisfy our own thirst of life. | 37:48 | |
| As we come and gather around this table today, | 37:53 | |
| let us come to a place where the well, | 37:59 | |
| the water, the living water runs deep for our spirits | 38:03 | |
| and let us come remembering these words | 38:09 | |
| of our Lord, Jesus the Christ. | 38:13 | |
| "Whoever drinks the water I will give | 38:17 | |
| "will never be thirsty again. | 38:21 | |
| "The water I will give will become a spring | 38:24 | |
| "which will provide you with life-giving water | 38:28 | |
| "and give you eternal life." | 38:32 | |
| Amen. | 38:36 | |

| - | We welcome you today to this service | 43:03 |
| of worship in Duke Chapel. | 43:06 | |
| We hope that it will be for all of us | 43:09 | |
| a time of spiritual renewal | 43:13 | |
| and genuine richness | 43:16 | |
| in the corporate community | 43:19 | |
| of the followers of Jesus Christ. | 43:23 | |
| As Chairman of the Duke University | 43:27 | |
| Council and Religious Life, | 43:29 | |
| it's a special joy for us in this chapel | 43:32 | |
| and in this community to welcome | 43:37 | |
| to the staff of Duke Chapel, Charlene Kammerer. | 43:40 | |
| This is her first Sunday | 43:46 | |
| as Assistant Minister to the university. | 43:48 | |
| After many months of careful search and deliberation, | 43:52 | |
| the Council and the Central Administration of the University | 43:58 | |
| asked that she be appointed as Assistant Minister | 44:04 | |
| and she comes to us this year under appointment | 44:10 | |
| from her bishop who is in Florida | 44:14 | |
| where she has served two parish churches | 44:17 | |
| before coming to be with us. | 44:21 | |
| And she and her husband, Leigh, | 44:23 | |
| and their small son, Christopher, are now in our midst | 44:25 | |
| and we are delighted to have them with us. | 44:31 | |
| It is customary in Duke Chapel | 44:35 | |
| at the reception of the holy communion | 44:38 | |
| for those who come to come by the center aisle | 44:41 | |
| and to form a large circle here in the crossing | 44:46 | |
| and we commune together that way | 44:50 | |
| and then return to the pews by the side aisles. | 44:53 | |
| We begin the liturgy for the Eucharist | 45:00 | |
| with prayers for others, let us pray... | 45:03 | |
| That the world may live in peace | 45:10 | |
| and that the church may achieve unity, | 45:13 | |
| fulfilling its service here and everywhere. | 45:16 | |
| That all ministers and teachers in the church | 45:23 | |
| may be faithful servants of the Gospel, | 45:27 | |
| leading others into its way of life | 45:31 | |
| and strengthening their faith. | 45:34 | |
| That the leaders of this nation | 45:40 | |
| and of the world may govern with justice and mercy. | 45:43 | |
| That all our work may be done for the common good, | 45:52 | |
| that it be done in safety, | 45:56 | |
| and that all may be spared from grinding toil | 46:00 | |
| which destroys fullness of life. | 46:03 | |
| That those who work on frontiers of truth | 46:10 | |
| and those who enrich our lives with beauty and joy | 46:13 | |
| may be free to follow their vocations. | 46:18 | |
| That those who suffer disease, or poverty, | 46:24 | |
| or loneliness, or grief, | 46:28 | |
| may be healed and comforted. | 46:31 | |
| That those who are oppressed or persecuted | 46:35 | |
| may be strengthened and delivered. | 46:38 | |
| That those whom we have known and loved | 46:45 | |
| who have died in the faith may be a glorious memory to us | 46:48 | |
| and a source of renewed fellowship with all the saints. | 46:53 | |
| Let us stand for the invitation to the Lord's holy table. | 47:05 | |
| Christ Our Lord invites to his table all who love him | 47:12 | |
| and who desire to live in peace with one another, | 47:18 | |
| the peace of the Lord is with you always. | 47:22 | |
| As forgiven and reconciled people, | 47:28 | |
| let us offer ourselves and our gifts to God. | 47:33 | |
| (soft organ hymn music) | 47:40 | |
| (soft dramatic organ music) | 51:03 | |
| (soft organ hymn music) | 51:19 | |
| (bright organ music) | 52:50 | |
| (music drowns out lyrics) | 53:10 | |
| Be seated, please. | 54:38 | |
| The Lord is with you. | 54:44 | |
| Lift up your hearts, | 54:49 | |
| let us give thanks to the Lord, our God. | 54:53 | |
| Oh, God, it is right that we should always | 55:02 | |
| and everywhere give you thanks and praise. | 55:05 | |
| We thank you, oh, Lord, our God, | 55:09 | |
| that you love the world so much | 55:12 | |
| that you sent your only son to be our savior. | 55:16 | |
| We remember that on the night | 55:21 | |
| in which he gave himself up for us, | 55:23 | |
| our Lord Jesus took bread. | 55:27 | |
| After giving you thanks, he broke the bread, | 55:30 | |
| gave it to his disciples and said, "Take, eat, | 55:34 | |
| "this is my body which is given for you." | 55:40 | |
| When supper was over, he took the cup, | 55:46 | |
| again he returned thanks to you, | 55:49 | |
| gave the cup to his disciples and said, | 55:53 | |
| "Drink from this all of you. | 55:57 | |
| "This is the cup of the New Covenant in my blood | 56:00 | |
| "poured out for you and for many | 56:05 | |
| "for the forgiveness of sins." | 56:08 | |
| When we eat this bread and drink this cup, | 56:12 | |
| we experience anew in the presence of our Lord Jesus Christ | 56:17 | |
| and look forward to his coming in final victory. | 56:21 | |
| Help us to know in the breaking of this bread | 56:27 | |
| the presence of Christ who gave his body | 56:31 | |
| and blood for us and for all people. | 56:36 | |
| Make us one with Christ, | 56:41 | |
| one with each other, | 56:44 | |
| and one in service to all people. | 56:47 | |
| Through Jesus Christ Our Lord, | 56:52 | |
| with the Holy Spirit in your holy church, | 56:56 | |
| all glory and honor is yours, | 56:59 | |
| oh, Lord, our God, amen. | 57:03 | |
| Our father, who art in heaven, | 57:08 | |
| hallowed be thy name, | 57:12 | |
| thy kingdom come, thy will be done | 57:15 | |
| on earth as it is in heaven. | 57:19 | |
| Give us this day our daily bread | 57:22 | |
| and forgive us our trespasses | 57:25 | |
| as we forgive those who trespass against us | 57:29 | |
| and lead us not into temptation | 57:34 | |
| but deliver us from evil | 57:37 | |
| for thine is the kingdom, and the power, | 57:39 | |
| and the glory forever and ever, amen. | 57:44 | |
| Because there is one loaf, | 58:00 | |
| we, many as we are, | 58:03 | |
| are one body. | 58:06 | |
| For it is one loaf of which we all partake. | 58:09 | |
| When we break the bread, is it not a means | 58:14 | |
| of sharing in the body of Christ? | 58:18 | |
| When we give thanks over the cup, | 58:22 | |
| is it not a means | 58:29 | |
| of sharing in the blood of Christ? | 58:32 | |
| (soft organ music) | 58:49 | |
| Will now from this table in peace | 1:04:12 | |
| and with the assurance that you have been visited | 1:04:15 | |
| with God's grace, which is eternal, amen. | 1:04:19 | |
| (soft symphonic organ music) | 1:04:32 | |
| (bright symphonic organ music) | 1:09:30 | |
| (soft symphonic organ music) | 1:09:43 | |
