Since we are assembled here to hear | 23:17
God's word and call upon him in prayer, | 23:18
let us think of our unworthiness. | 23:22
Confess before God that we have sinned and fought. | 23:25
Word and deed. | 23:29 | |
And realize also, that we can not free ourselves | 23:31
from our sinful nature, therefore, | 23:35
let us take refuge in his infinite mercy | 23:39
seeking and imploring God's grace for | 23:42
the sake of our Lord, Jesus Christ. | 23:45
Almighty God, you love us but we have not loved you. | 23:57
You call but we have not listened. | 24:03
We walk away from neighbors in need, | 24:07
wrapped up in our own concerns. | 24:10
We have gone along with evil, with prejudice, | 24:14
warfare, and greed. | 24:18
Oh Lord, our God, help us to face up to ourselves | 24:21
so that as you move toward us in mercy, | 24:26
we may repent, turn to you, and receive forgiveness | 24:30
through Jesus Christ our Lord. | 24:37
As you believe so shall it be. | 24:58
By the command of our Lord, Jesus Christ, | 25:03
I announce to all of you the forgiveness | 25:06
of your sins in the name of the | 25:08
Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. | 25:11
May the God of peace sanctify you holy, | 25:15
and may your spirit, soul, and body | 25:20
be kept sound and blameless 'til | 25:24
the coming of our Lord, Jesus Christ. | 25:27
God who calls you his faithful, and he will do it. | 25:30
Let us give thanks for God is good | 25:37
and God's love is everlasting. | 25:39
Thanks be to God, who's love has made us. | 25:43
Thanks be to God, who's mercy forgives us. | 25:47
Thanks be to God, who's promise secures us. | 25:52
Amen. | 25:56 | |
I would like to welcome each and every one of you. | 25:58
This morning, this Lord's day, as we come together, | 26:01
to pray and to lift our voices to our God. | 26:04
I would also like to call attention to the fact | 26:09
that this afternoon at 5:30 in the gardens, | 26:11
there will be a free concert where the music | 26:15
of Johann Strauss will be presented. | 26:18
Once again, it is at 5:30 in the Sarah P. Duke Gardens | 26:21
and it is a free concert. | 26:25
We hope that as many of you can will be in attendance. | 26:27
Let us pray. | 26:34 | |
Prepare our hearts, oh Lord, to accept your word. | 26:38
Silence in us any voice but your own. | 26:43
That hearing, we may also obey your will. | 26:47
Through Jesus Christ our Lord, | 26:52
amen. | 26:55 | |
The old testament lesson for today is from the first | 26:58
book of the Kings, chapter 17, | 27:00
verses 17 through 24. | 27:04
After this, the son of the woman, | 27:09
the mistress of the house, became ill. | 27:10
And his illness was so severe, | 27:14
that there was no breath left in him. | 27:16
And the woman said to Elijah, | 27:20
"What have you against me, O man of God? | 27:23
You have come to me to bring my sin to | 27:27
remembrance and to cause the death of my son!" | 27:29
And he said to her, "Give me your son." | 27:34
And Elijah took him from her bosom and carried him | 27:39
up into his own chamber where he lodged, | 27:42
and laid him upon his own bed. | 27:45
And he cried to the Lord, "O Lord my God, | 27:49
has thou brought calamity even upon the widow | 27:53
with whom I sojourn, by slaying her son?" | 27:55
Then he stretched himself upon the child | 28:00
three times and cried to the Lord, | 28:02
"O Lord my God, let this child's | 28:06
soul come into him again." | 28:09
And the Lord harken to the voice of Elijah. | 28:13
And the soul of the child came | 28:16
into him again, and he revived. | 28:18
And Elijah took the child and brought him down | 28:21
from the upper chamber into the house | 28:24
and delivered him to his mother. | 28:27
And Elijah said, "See, your son lives." | 28:29
And the woman said to Elijah, | 28:34
"Now I know that you are a man of God, | 28:37
and that the word of the Lord in your mouth is truth." | 28:40

Will the congregation please stand | 30:33
for the reading of the gospel lesson. | 30:36
The gospel lesson is from Saint Luke, | 30:42
chapter seven, verses 11 through 17. | 30:45
Soon afterward, he went to a town called Nain, | 30:50
and his disciples and a great crowd went with him. | 30:54
As he drew near to the gate of the city, | 30:58
behold, a man who had died was being carried out, | 31:01
the only son of his mother, and she was a widow, | 31:05
and a large crowd from the city was with her. | 31:09
And when the Lord saw her, he had compassion | 31:13
on her and said to her, "Do not weep." | 31:16
And he came and touched the bier, | 31:20
and the bearers stood still. | 31:23
And Jesus said, "Young man, I say to you, arise." | 31:26
And the dead man sat up and began to speak, | 31:32
and Jesus gave him to his mother. | 31:36
Fear seized them all, and they glorified God, saying, | 31:40
"A great prophet has arisen among us!" | 31:44
and "God has visited his people!" | 31:47
And this report concerning him spread through | 31:51
the whole of Judea and all the surrounding country. | 31:54
Here ends the reading of the gospel. | 31:59

- | The bible knows the deepest | 33:16 |
sadness of the human experience. | 33:18
It knows the speechless tears that | 33:22
flow in response to life's capricious malice. | 33:25
Today's lessons speak of two widows. | 33:31
We do not know the circumstances of their widowhood. | 33:36
Was one or the other left alone after | 33:41
a long and tender marriage? | 33:45
Or did death strike to frustrate | 33:49
a relationship just beginning? | 33:51
The widowed then and now, | 33:56
can testify that regardless of the length of years. | 34:00
Death always comes in the midst of life. | 34:05
But whatever the sorrow or that first loss | 34:11
of a husband's companionship, | 34:14
the pain is multiplied with the | 34:17
subsequent death of a child. | 34:20
There is an extravagance of agony in both lessons. | 34:24
As if to highlight the miracle of life that overcomes it. | 34:29
The widow of the first lesson, | 34:37
who lived in a village called Zarephath | 34:39
was a pagan, beyond the concern | 34:42
of the community of Israel, | 34:46
a fact that dramatizes the sovereign freedom | 34:48
of the love of God, a love that will not | 34:51
be constrained or retained | 34:54
behind the barriers we build. | 34:58
The widow of Nain lived in an obscure | 35:02
part of Galilee outside the mainstream of Jewish life. | 35:05
Those who were with Jesus when he | 35:10
encountered her would have been | 35:12
familiar with the story of Elijah | 35:14
and the earlier widow, and the meeting of their master | 35:17
with the widow of Nain, would have triggered | 35:23
their memories of the power of God | 35:26
to breathe life into being, in each episode, | 35:30
there's a dramatic response to a specific sorrow, | 35:36
to the suffering of one who doesn't count for much. | 35:41
To the special agony of the bereft. | 35:46
Faith begins there. | 35:52
With that identity, with the acknowledgment | 35:55
of the darkness at the heart of life. | 35:58
With the sense of dependency, with compassion. | 36:02
The word literally means suffering with another. | 36:08
Faith begins, in Christian terms, at the foot of the cross. | 36:14
In the companionship of vulnerable love. | 36:18
But it does not end there. | 36:23
To identify faith as synonymous with sympathy, | 36:27
is really a subtle form of separating ourselves | 36:31
from those who suffer. | 36:34
To say that religious faith is only | 36:37
or even primary expressed in a response | 36:39
to human need is to participate | 36:42
in the oppression of the poor | 36:45
because such an emphasis on sympathy | 36:48
makes a sharp difference between them, | 36:51
those who suffer, and the rest of us | 36:55
who are strong and distant from the sufferers. | 36:59
Faith does begin with compassion. | 37:04
It is a response to the pain and loss | 37:07
of human life that leads a believer | 37:09
to see the precariousness of his own life. | 37:12
To recognize human need. To identify with the losers | 37:15
and to stand with them as a sister | 37:19
or brother to share their suffering. | 37:22
But suffering and the stories of these | 37:27
two widows is a context, | 37:29
a stage, a setting for a more central theme. | 37:33
What the stories are about is gospel, | 37:38
good news, a pronouncement of the way | 37:42
things really are, and they say that | 37:45
the kingdom of God is here. | 37:48
They declare that God reigns, that is a given. | 37:51
And from it, flow these consequences. | 37:57
The desperate loneliness of a widow cut off | 38:01
from her only son, is not going to be | 38:04
the final chapter of her life. | 38:06
Life is stronger than death for those | 38:10
that can perceive it, the most devastating | 38:14
catastrophe has within it, echos, | 38:17
glimpses, possibilities that in the providence | 38:21
of God, reach their fullness in the | 38:25
life to which he is calling us. | 38:28
Faith that begins at the foot of the cross, | 38:33
in standing with the suffering, opens like a rose | 38:36
to receive life's glorious multiplicity. | 38:42
Faith moves from compassion, | 38:46
to perception, to proclamation. | 38:49
From the deepest sadness, to the wonder | 38:53
of what God is doing in human life. | 38:56
From the darkness into the glory of | 38:59
unending light that reveals the purposes of God. | 39:02
These stories are revelatory episodes. | 39:08
They are like banners that speak | 39:12
boldly and clearly of the tenderness | 39:15
and of the power of God. | 39:18
The stories summon faith, they call it forth. | 39:21
And that happens whenever the word, | 39:26
the truth of God invades the distorter | 39:29
of human existence and quails the storms of chaos. | 39:31
Whenever the light overcomes the darkness of the world. | 39:36
The word invades that darkness and in the world | 39:42
is so illumined, men and women respond in faith. | 39:47
As if to say, "Aha, yes, that's the way it is." | 39:51
"I can see it now." | 39:55
"When I stand with the suffering, | 39:57
I see things in a new way." | 39:59
"I see possibilities and signals I did not see before." | 40:02
Elijah said to the widow at Zarephath, | 40:09
"See, your son lives." | 40:13
He summoned from her a new perception | 40:17
of the way things are and the young | 40:19
son of the widow on Nain was commanded by Jesus, | 40:23
"Young man, I say to you, arise." | 40:26
and the dead man sat up and began to speak. | 40:29
And he gave him to his mother. | 40:32
What was lost is found, life is given | 40:36
anew by the command of the Lord of Life. | 40:39
And faith is the way to see all of this. | 40:42
It provides a new perception, | 40:47
a different way of looking at what is, | 40:49
finding in it what God is doing | 40:51
and praising God for the wonder of it all. | 40:54
Faith makes a difference. | 40:59
It makes all the difference. | 41:01
It is a foundation, a place to stand. | 41:03
Not for protection from life's tumalts | 41:07
but for perception of life's gifts. | 41:10
Ours though, is a faithless age. | 41:17
Our generation looks at events and does | 41:21
not see what is happening, there's hardly any vision. | 41:24
We experience life, not as the context | 41:27
for meeting God, for deepening our | 41:31
sense for wonder and love and justice. | 41:34
But as a threat to what is familiar. | 41:38
A danger. | 41:41 | |
Something unknown and therefor against us. | 41:42
Those who stand on a foundation of faith, | 41:47
who begin at the foot of the cross, | 41:51
see things differently. | 41:54
Men and women of faith in every event | 41:57
ask this question, "What does this event | 42:00
say to me of my world or of my God or of me?" | 42:03
"What response does it command?" | 42:09
Those who stand on the foundation of faith | 42:12
look for example at the eruption of Mount Saint Helens | 42:15
and see not the failure of modern | 42:19
science to predict it, but see | 42:21
the wonder of a world still in the process of formation. | 42:24
They hear the message that human | 42:28
beings are made to live in harmony with | 42:29
their sister's and brothers of creation, | 42:32
with rocks and hills and the forest and seas, | 42:34
and all the vast array that God has made. | 42:38
Those who stand on the foundation of faith, | 42:42
listen to the human explosion and a refugee | 42:45
camp in Arkansas or in the desperate streets of Miami. | 42:48
And hear the prophetic judgment that national | 42:53
and racial animosities erupt like volcanoes | 42:56
when justice is ignored or suppressed. | 43:01
Faith makes a difference, it begins with compassion | 43:06
and moves towards hope, | 43:12
hope divorced from compassion, becomes a mindless optimism. | 43:16
Compassion without the direction of hope | 43:22
is a sugary sympathy with no capacity, | 43:26
no passion for justice. | 43:29
Faith is the energy that unites compassion and hope. | 43:32
Does faith make a difference in your life? | 43:39
How do you look at what you do? | 43:42
At what happens to you. | 43:44
What messages are you ready to hear through | 43:46
the events of your life? | 43:48
What is God saying to you through them? | 43:50
About your world, yourself, and him. | 43:53
And what response will you make. | 43:59
Faith that begins at the foot of the cross | 44:03
in wonder at the love that sustains us there. | 44:07
Channels that love and compassion towards others | 44:11
and enters life with invincible hope. | 44:15
Such a faith is a rock. | 44:19
High above the confusion and noise of the landscape | 44:22
of despair and from it we can see clearly enough. | 44:25
There are clouds, to be sure. | 44:31
There will be uncertainty but the foundation | 44:34
is safe and the direction is clear | 44:38
for those who began in compassion and live their lives | 44:43
in hope for by faith they are aligned | 44:47
with the purposes of almighty God. | 44:52
Who's kingdom is surely coming | 44:55
