- | We welcome our many friends who are gathered this morning | 29:58 |
in the beauty of Duke Chapel on this beautiful day. | 30:01
In particular, we welcome to our worship service | 30:05
this morning the Presbyterian College Choir | 30:08
from Clinton, South Carolina. | 30:12
We are grateful for their contributions | 30:14
in song to this hour. | 30:17
We also welcome all our young friends in the Girl Scouts, | 30:19
their leaders and families. | 30:23
And now, let us open our minds and hearts | 30:26
to the loving God of judgment and forgiveness. | 30:29
O God, hear us as we join together | 30:32
in our unison prayer of confession. | 30:36
O God of mercy, you sent Jesus Christ to save lost people. | 30:39
Judge us with your love and lift the burden of our sins. | 30:45
We confess this day that we are twisted by pride. | 30:50
We see ourselves pure when we are stained, | 30:54
and great when we are small. | 30:58
We have failed in love, forgotten to be just, | 31:01
and have turned away from our truth. | 31:05
Have mercy, O God, and forgive our sin, | 31:08
for the sake of Jesus, your son, our savior. | 31:12
Amen. | 31:16 | |
Now let us each within the still small voice | 31:18
of our conscience, make our personal confession before God. | 31:21
Jesus said, "I am the bread of life. | 31:39
"Whoever comes to me shall never be hungry, | 31:42
"and whoever believes in my shall never be thirsty. | 31:46
"Go henceforth in newness of heart, | 31:50
"walk in freedom for your sins are forgiven." | 31:53
Let us give thanks for God is good, | 31:57
and God's love is everlasting. | 32:00
Thanks be to God whose love has made us. | 32:04
Thanks be to God whose mercy forgives us. | 32:08
Thanks be to God whose promise secures us. | 32:12
Amen. | 32:16 | |
We welcome to the pulpit this morning | 32:18
the Reverend Robert Young, minister to the university. | 32:20
We would also like to call to your attention | 32:24
that there are booklets for your use during the lent season. | 32:27
They're available in the back of the chancel. | 32:32
We also wish to point out that there is an opportunity | 32:35
for people who are coming to Duke Hospital | 32:39
to avail themselves of host homes. | 32:42
This is a service offered by the larger community | 32:45
for a free room for families to go to | 32:49
when they have loved ones in the hospital. | 32:53
We also need people to volunteer their homes | 32:56
for this service and to help in staffing the desk | 32:59
and in transportation. | 33:03
You will look in your bulletin, | 33:05
you will find further information | 33:07
and how to contact the person in charge. | 33:08
Now let us attend to the word of God. | 33:14
O God, let the power of your transforming spirit | 33:17
shine forth from your holy word. | 33:20
Bless the speaking and hearing of your truth. | 33:23
First, let us listen to the lesson from Exodus 3:1-15. | 33:26
Moses was minding the flock of his father-in-law, Jethro, | 33:32
priest of Midian. | 33:36
He led the flock along the side of the wilderness, | 33:38
and came to Horeb, the mountain of God. | 33:41
There the angel of the Lord appeared to him | 33:44
in the flame of a burning bush. | 33:46
Moses noticed that although the bush was on fire, | 33:49
it was not being burnt up. | 33:52
So he said to himself, | 33:54
"I must go across to see this wonderful site. | 33:56
"Why does not the bush burn away?" | 34:00
When the Lord saw that Moses had turned aside to look, | 34:03
he called to him out of the bush. | 34:07
"Moses, Moses" and Moses answered. | 34:09
"Yes, I am here." | 34:12 | |
God said, "Come no nearer, take off your sandals. | 34:15
"The place where you're standing is holy ground." | 34:19
Then he said, "I am the God of your forefathers, | 34:22
"the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, the God of Jacob." | 34:26
Moses covered his face, for he was afraid to gaze on God. | 34:31
The Lord said, "I have indeed seen the misery | 34:36
"of my people in Egypt; I have heard their outcry | 34:40
"against their slave masters. | 34:43
"I have taken heed of their sufferings | 34:45
"and have come down to rescue them from the power of Egypt, | 34:48
"and to bring them out of that country | 34:52
"into a fine broad land. | 34:55
"It is a land flowing with milk and honey, | 34:57
"the home of Canaanites, Hittites, | 34:59
"Amorites, Perizzites, Hivites and Jebusites. | 35:02
"The outcry of the Israelites has now reached me. | 35:06
"Yes, I have seen the brutality | 35:10
"of the Egyptians toward them. | 35:13
"Come now, I will send you to Pharaoh, | 35:14
"and you shall bring my people out of Egypt. | 35:17
"But who am I?" Moses said to God, | 35:21
"That I should go to Pharaoh and that I should bring | 35:23
"the Israelites out of Egypt?" | 35:26
God answered, "I am with you. | 35:28
"This shall be the proof that it is I who have sent you. | 35:31
"When you have brought the people out of Egypt, | 35:35
"you shall all worship God here on this mountain." | 35:39
Then Moses said to God, "If I go to the Israelites | 35:42
"and tell them that the God of their forefathers | 35:45
"has sent me to them, and they ask me his name, | 35:47
"what shall I say?" | 35:51
God answered, "I am, that is who I am. | 35:53
"Tell them that I am has sent you to them." | 35:57
And God said further, "You must tell the Israelites this: | 36:00
"that it is Jehovah the God of their forefathers, | 36:05
"the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, the God of Jacob | 36:08
"who has sent you to them. | 36:12
"This is my name forever. | 36:14
"This is my title in every generation." | 36:16
And now let us move to the New Testament lesson, | 36:20
to the Second Epistle with Paul to the Corinthians, | 36:23
chapter five, verses 17 through 21. | 36:26
When anyone is united to Christ, | 36:30
there is a new world. | 36:33
The old order has gone, | 36:36
and a new order has already begun. | 36:39
From first to last, this has been the work of God. | 36:42
He has reconciled us men to himself through Christ, | 36:46
and he has enlisted us in this service of reconciliation. | 36:50
What I mean is that God was in Christ, | 36:55
reconciling the world to himself, | 36:58
no longer holding men's misdeeds against them, | 37:01
and that he has entrusted us | 37:04
with the message of reconciliation. | 37:06
We come, therefore, as Christ's ambassadors. | 37:09
It is as if God were appealing to you through us. | 37:12
In Christ's name, we implore you, be reconciled to God. | 37:16
Christ was innocent of sin, | 37:20
and yet for our sake, God made him one | 37:23
with the centralness of men so that in him | 37:26
we might be made one with the goodness of God himself. | 37:30
Bless the hearing of this word to our use. | 37:34

The Scripture lesson this morning is from Luke 18 | 42:53
verses one through eight. | 42:57
He spoke to them in a parable to show that | 43:00
they should keep on praying and never lose heart. | 43:02
There was once a judge who cared nothing for God or man. | 43:05
And in the same town there was a widow | 43:09
who constantly came before him, | 43:11
demanding justice against her opponent. | 43:14
For a long time he refused. | 43:16
But in the end, he said to himself, | 43:19
"True, I care nothing for God or man, | 43:21
"but this widow is so great a nuisance | 43:24
"that I will see her righted before she wears me out | 43:27
"with her persistence." | 43:30
The Lord said, "You hear with the unjust judge says, | 43:31
"and will not God vindicate his chosen | 43:35
"who cry out to him day and night | 43:38
"while he listens patiently to them? | 43:41

- | In the name of the Lord, our God, | 45:01 |
creator, redeemer and sustainer. | 45:03
Amen. | 45:07 | |
Jesus was asked many questions in his day. | 45:10
The questions he was asked then are questions | 45:16
we still ask today. | 45:19
But our Lord had the unusual capacity | 45:23
and the distinctive gift of taking a situation | 45:26
where he was asked a question by the scribes | 45:30
or Pharisees or lawyers or even his disciples | 45:34
and responding to the question with a parable, | 45:38
and leaving his inquirers with an even more difficult | 45:42
and more profound and more important question for them | 45:47
than the question that they had put to him. | 45:52
Thus, in response to the question put to Jesus, | 45:57
who is my neighbor, Jesus told us the parable | 46:01
that we call the parable of the good Samaritan | 46:06
and left his lawyer/interrogator with the question, | 46:08
which of these three who came upon the man beaten | 46:12
and in the ditch, which of these was neighbor | 46:16
to the man who fell among thieves? | 46:20
And then his word go and do likewise. | 46:23
To the question who is righteous, | 46:26
Jesus told the parable of the Pharisee and the tax collector | 46:28
and then asked which of these two | 46:31
who had been in the temple, | 46:34
which of these two went away justified? | 46:37
Here in the parable read for our gospel lesson this morning, | 46:42
Jesus is answering the Pharisee's question | 46:46
about when is the kingdom of God coming. | 46:49
And he tells his disciples this story, | 46:54
of the widow and the unjust judge, | 46:56
and ends by asking when the son of man comes, | 46:59
will he find faith on earth? | 47:05
The point of this word I think is | 47:10
don't raise a question with Jesus | 47:13
unless you're ready to deal with a more | 47:16
serious question yourself. | 47:18
Or the point may well be, | 47:22
don't ask Jesus for an answer when you | 47:25
are to be searching and probing and struggling | 47:28
for an answer yourself. | 47:31
Or the point may be | 47:35
let us not always think that we know | 47:39
what the most important question really is. | 47:41
For what is at the top of our list | 47:45
may not necessarily be at the top of the list | 47:47
of questions for our Lord. | 47:49
And here in the lesson for this morning | 47:54
I think is a perfect example of this. | 47:56
Today, we may think that the real question, | 47:59
the urgent question, the timely question, | 48:03
the most important question is | 48:05
when, O Lord, is your kingdom coming? | 48:07
When will you return in power and might and glory | 48:10
and in triumph to reign and to rule over the earth? | 48:14
For many good Christian folk today, that is the question: | 48:18
when is Jesus coming again? | 48:22
And Jesus replies, I think, | 48:27
that is an important question. | 48:31
Let me tell you what it will be like | 48:33
when the son of man returns, | 48:36
and in the verses just preceding our lesson | 48:37
for this morning, he describes some of the way | 48:40
that he wants us to understand that it will be | 48:42
when the son of man does return. | 48:45
But then Jesus doesn't leave us there to speculate | 48:48
over the when. | 48:50 | |
No, he moves on to tell the story | 48:53
of the widow and the unjust judge, | 48:56
and ends by asking us the question, | 48:58
the most personal and the most crucial question | 49:02
I believe for them and for us: | 49:05
when the son of man returns, whenever that is, | 49:07
will he indeed find faith on earth? | 49:10
In other words, will you persevere, will you persist, | 49:16
will you be faithful? | 49:20
There are some questions more important than the question | 49:22
of when is the kingdom of God coming. | 49:25
One of those more important questions that Jesus | 49:28
is putting to us I think is how are you living your life? | 49:31
Are you being faithful to the Lord, our God? | 49:35
Will you personally and communally be found with faith? | 49:39
As we know from reading and studying | 49:48
and trying to understand the gospel, | 49:50
Jesus told many parables. | 49:52
We're not always sure about why he told some of them, | 49:55
the specific purpose is often open to debate | 49:59
about many of them. | 50:04
But here, however, in the introduction to this parable, | 50:05
Jesus tells the disciples precisely why he is | 50:08
telling this particular one that they ought | 50:11
always to pray and not lose heart. | 50:13
Now usually when I read or hear or study a parable, | 50:19
I find myself identifying with one or the other | 50:22
particular character in a given parable. | 50:26
Often when I've read a parable many times, | 50:30
I find that I identify with a different person one time | 50:33
and another person another time, | 50:36
or another situation another time. | 50:37
Perhaps this is one of the real beauties of the parables | 50:40
and of the fact that Jesus did tell and each in parables. | 50:43
We can hear them over and over and over again, | 50:48
and it seems as if they give a different | 50:51
message to us each time. | 50:52
The message we hear may well depend on the person we are | 50:55
at that particular moment. | 50:59
The person we identify with in a given parable | 51:00
may depend on who we are, | 51:03
how old we are, what our responsibilities in life are, | 51:06
where we are ourselves in the pilgrimage of faith. | 51:09
For example, in the parable that we call | 51:14
the parable of the prodigal son, | 51:17
or the waiting father, or the loving father, | 51:19
or the elder brother, or call it whatever you will, | 51:22
you know the one to which I'm referring. | 51:25
In this particular parable, I find myself identifying | 51:28
first with one of the characters and then with another. | 51:30
Sometimes I feel very much like the younger brother | 51:35
and want to take all that is mine and run away. | 51:39
At other times, I find myself identifying | 51:46
with the elder brother. | 51:49
And I find that I want to play it safe, | 51:52
that I want to be secure, that I want tp stay at home, | 51:54
that I don't want to venture out to take any risks | 51:56
or to dare at all. | 51:59 | |
At other times, and particularly as our children | 52:02
are growing older, | 52:05
I see myself more and more as the father; | 52:08
not as a godly figure by any means, | 52:12
but as a father who can only wait, | 52:14
who can give freedom and can love | 52:20
and hope and pray. | 52:23
But really only can offer security and acceptance | 52:26
and a home to which our children may always return. | 52:29
But in that parable, as well as in the parable for today, | 52:36
we need to remember that the focus is really | 52:40
on who God is, what the character and nature | 52:43
of God really are, and of what God expects | 52:47
and desires from us. | 52:50
Here's the story of a widow in Jesus' day, | 52:54
a widow who simply wanted the judge | 52:59
to save her from her adversary, to set her free, as it was. | 53:02
Perhaps we need to be reminded that women in Jesus' day | 53:09
had absolutely no power. | 53:11
They had no familial power, they had no legal power, | 53:15
they had no religious or social power, whatever. | 53:17
None whatsoever. | 53:21
Here the judge did, however, have all the power | 53:24
and the authority that this widow needed. | 53:27
The only question was would he hear and respond | 53:30
helpfully to her plea, to her cries? | 53:36
Would he use his power for her good | 53:39
and for her benefit? | 53:41
Would he show mercy to one who had no real claim | 53:42
on his mercy, who had no authority, no power, | 53:46
who was completely and utterly helpless before him? | 53:49
Those are the questions, some of them. | 53:54
Well there are many messages I think in this parable | 53:59
worth noting, even though Jesus has already told us | 54:01
what the main reason for telling this parable is. | 54:04
There is one central message, but perhaps there are | 54:08
other messages, and I think there are. | 54:11
Is this story here to help us to see | 54:14
and understand better God's relationship | 54:17
with the poor, the oppressed and the dispossessed? | 54:21
Is this story to give hope to the outcast, | 54:26
the powerless, the weak and the ignored? | 54:30
Are these the ones, my friends, | 54:35
who finally will be accepted and heard and shown mercy | 54:37
when the kingdom of God is fully present? | 54:42
Or another theme may be, | 54:47
is this a word to give support to the poor | 54:52
and the weak? | 54:57 | |
I don't know how you feel but I think | 55:01
that we cannot help but be impressed | 55:03
by one obvious thread that runs through this story | 55:07
from the very beginning. | 55:12
Even though the woman was weak, | 55:14
even though she was absolutely powerless, | 55:17
even though we assume that she was very poor, | 55:19
even though she had no rights and surely knew | 55:22
that she had no rights, | 55:25
nonetheless this woman was still willing | 55:27
to assert herself, to claim some rights for herself, | 55:30
to stand up unashamedly and unabashedly | 55:34
for what she needed and wanted | 55:38
and felt was important and necessary for her | 55:39
to have life and to live life. | 55:42
It is beautiful, I believe, it is absolutely beautiful; | 55:44
it was then and it is now, | 55:48
to see a person, any person, young or old, | 55:51
black or white, rich or poor, | 55:54
educated or uneducated, the ins or the outs; | 55:57
it is absolutely beautiful, I believe, | 56:00
to see someone stand unflinchingly and unhesitatingly | 56:02
firm and tall and sure in the face of all kinds of odds | 56:06
and insist on being treated fairly and justly | 56:10
and humanely, and that was what she was asking for. | 56:14
And we may not like to see it in others | 56:18
at times when those who are down and out | 56:20
rise up and claim their rightful place in the church | 56:22
or in society or in the world as children of God. | 56:25
But I cannot help believe, my friends, | 56:29
that when any one child of God stands up | 56:31
as this woman did, God almighty surely must rejoice. | 56:34
This woman just simply would not be denied | 56:41
her rightful place. | 56:44
There are people like her around us | 56:47
all over the place today. | 56:49
People who are clamoring to be heard, | 56:53
to be seen, to be recognized, | 56:55
to be treated humanely, fairly, justly. | 56:57
Their voices will be heard, they will be recognized, | 57:01
their rightful place will be given them. | 57:05
Colin Morris, in a little book of his entitled | 57:10
"Unyoung, Uncolored, Unpoor" | 57:12
says that the real battle that is yet to come | 57:15
will not be between East and West | 57:21
or communist and capitalist, | 57:23
it will not be even between black and white, | 57:27
but it will be between the haves and the have nots. | 57:32
And what I think we're seeing and experiencing | 57:38
here at home and all around the world | 57:41
in so many, many ways | 57:44
is one by one, group by group, | 57:46
nation by nation, people by people, | 57:49
all over this earth, people standing up for themselves | 57:51
and for their own rights and wanting to be treated | 57:55
humanely and fairly and justly. | 57:58
Well, another theme in this may be this: | 58:03
is this story told to tell us that the power to be gracious, | 58:06
to show mercy, to restore people to their rightful place | 58:10
may not really be ours to control? | 58:13
With regard to this parable, | 58:17
some of us were studying it back last summer. | 58:18
And someone posed the question. | 58:22
The question was this: are there ways in which | 58:25
the grace of God is seen as a threat to some of us? | 58:29
Are there any ways in which the grace of God | 58:39
and the way God reveals that grace, | 58:42
are there ways in which you may feel | 58:45
that that grace is a threat to you or to me? | 58:48
Well I think so. | 58:54 | |
There are some us in the church who seem | 58:57
to want to control the grace of God, | 59:00
to say who should be blessed by God | 59:04
and who should not be blessed, | 59:07
to say who should be forgiven by God | 59:10
and who should not be forgiven, | 59:12
to say who should be in and who should be out. | 59:14
Have you ever noticed how some Christians | 59:18
want God's grace to be poured out only | 59:20
on those who believe as they do, | 59:22
or who interpret Scripture as they do, | 59:25
or who behave as they do? | 59:27
How some good church members want only | 59:29
their kind of people in the church? | 59:32
Ever notice that? | 59:36
Well, I have. | 59:39 | |
And somehow or other, those of us who are | 59:43
a part of the church seem to think that we | 59:45
can control the grace of God, | 59:47
or that somehow or other we want to control it. | 59:50
But God says to you and to me, | 59:53
to all of us, "Am I not allowed to do | 59:55
"as I chose with what is mine?" | 59:59
And rather timidly and ashamedly at times, | 1:00:04
I think we have to say yes, Lord. | 1:00:07
But we still don't like it, some us anyhow. | 1:00:10
The poor, the harlots, the adulterers, | 1:00:12
the outcast, the sick, the weak, | 1:00:14
these may be the ones to know and receive God's grace, | 1:00:17
to taste the kingdom of God long before | 1:00:21
some of the rest of us ever will. | 1:00:24
And though there were many who felt that she | 1:00:30
was not entitled to any mercy at all, | 1:00:32
the judge finally showed mercy. | 1:00:36
But Jesus tells us that he told this parable | 1:00:40
to show how we ought always to pray and not lose heart. | 1:00:42
I think we need that word today, as they did in Jesus' day. | 1:00:48
Jesus knew that suffering and persecution | 1:00:52
and hard times would come to the disciples; | 1:00:54
life would be very, very difficult for them. | 1:00:57
Before they left this earth, they too would suffer | 1:00:59
many things before the kingdom would really come. | 1:01:02
So this parable is told as a world of hope, | 1:01:06
a word of support, a word or encouragement. | 1:01:08
The word is be faithful, be persistent, | 1:01:10
be steady, be loyal, be patient; | 1:01:12
hold on, never give up. | 1:01:14
And that word remains a word which we need, even today. | 1:01:18
But this parable is to show us the character of God | 1:01:23
and to show us our responsibility before God. | 1:01:26
And the character of God is that of a God of infinite mercy, | 1:01:30
of boundless compassion, | 1:01:37
and of unconditioned love. | 1:01:40
The point here is that is a scoundrel of a judge, | 1:01:44
if a human judge who neither fears God | 1:01:47
nor regards men whatsoever, | 1:01:49
if somebody like you or like me knows | 1:01:51
how to show mercy and love and forgiveness, | 1:01:54
how much more will the Lord, our God, | 1:01:57
show mercy to all of us? | 1:01:59
Which one of you, if his sons asks for a loaf of bread, | 1:02:01
is going to give him a stone? | 1:02:06
Or which among you, if you child asks for a fish, | 1:02:07
will give your child a serpent? | 1:02:11
How much more then, if you know how to give | 1:02:13
good gifts to your children, | 1:02:15
will your father, who is in heaven, | 1:02:17
give good gifts to you? | 1:02:19
But then responsibility, which is ours here, | 1:02:25
is a very simple one. | 1:02:29
Be faithful. | 1:02:32 | |
Be stubbornly and persistently faithful | 1:02:35
and true to our Lord. | 1:02:38
This story is about the widow, | 1:02:43
about you and me, | 1:02:46
and about how we are to hold on, | 1:02:49
to stick with it, to hang in there, to persevere, | 1:02:56
to persist, to be loyal and to be faithful. | 1:02:59
But we're not called to do this blindly or with no hope | 1:03:03
or no assurance or no promise, my friends. | 1:03:07
No, we do it because we know in whom we have believed | 1:03:10
because we can say with the psalmist of old, | 1:03:13
the Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want. | 1:03:16
Because we hear Jesus' words come to us, | 1:03:19
I will not leave you comfortless, I will come to you. | 1:03:21
Because we hear the word saying | 1:03:26
it is the Lord, God, who has made us and not we ourselves. | 1:03:28
We are his people and the sheep of his pasture. | 1:03:31
We hear Jesus saying, "Lo, I am with you always, | 1:03:35
"even to the end of the age." | 1:03:37
We hear John writing in Revelation, | 1:03:39
"I am the alpha and the omega, | 1:03:41
"the beginning and the ending." | 1:03:43
The word is from the beginning through the ending, | 1:03:44
the word is eternal. | 1:03:48
So the question then, | 1:03:55
is it persistence that pays off? | 1:03:58
Well I really don't think so. | 1:04:04
Persistence may be necessary, | 1:04:08
but it is not persistence which pays off. | 1:04:10
It is the grace of God. | 1:04:15
Was it the persistence or the perseverance | 1:04:21
of Moses that led his people into freedom | 1:04:24
and into the promised land, or what is the sustaining | 1:04:27
grace of the Lord almighty? | 1:04:30
Was it the persistence of the woman | 1:04:34
who had the disease of the flow of blood, | 1:04:36
and all she needed was to touch the hem of Jesus' garment? | 1:04:40
Was it her persistence or was it the healing grace | 1:04:43
of the Lord, our God, which brought wholeness to her? | 1:04:47
Was it the persistence of the woman of the city | 1:04:53
who washed Jesus' feet with her tears | 1:04:57
and wiped them with the hair of her head? | 1:05:00
Was it her persistence which brought her forgiveness | 1:05:03
and a new sense of purpose and wellbeing in life, | 1:05:06
or was it the redeeming grace of Jesus, the Christ? | 1:05:09
Was it the dogged persistence of Zacchaeus | 1:05:19
to see Jesus and to have some experience with Jesus | 1:05:23
that brought salvation to his house that particular day, | 1:05:26
or was it the accepting forgiving grace | 1:05:30
of our Lord Jesus Christ? | 1:05:33
Was it the faithfulness and the loyalty | 1:05:37
and the persistence of Peter | 1:05:39
that made him the one chosen disciple, | 1:05:43
or was it the understanding, forgiving, | 1:05:48
healing, restoring grace of the Lord, our God? | 1:05:51
No, I guess I believe that that woman in the parable | 1:05:57
this morning could have hammered away at the door | 1:06:01
of the judge forever. | 1:06:04
And if the judge at some point had not changed his mind, | 1:06:06
she could have hammered on forever. | 1:06:12
And I guess I would like to say or I believe | 1:06:16
that we could pray to God endlessly, | 1:06:19
but if it were not God's nature to hear and to respond, | 1:06:24
then it would be as Paul says about love, | 1:06:28
it would simply be a noisy gong and a clanging cymbal, | 1:06:30
and we could go on praying forever | 1:06:33
if it were not for the grace of God. | 1:06:36
Persistence then, is that what really pays off now? | 1:06:40
I don't think so. | 1:06:44
Persistence could simply be another means | 1:06:47
of works righteousness, and Paul tells us | 1:06:50
that it is by grace that we are saved through faith. | 1:06:52
So I want to contend this morning | 1:06:58
that our hope for fullness in this life, | 1:07:03
for wholeness in this day, | 1:07:08
for meaning moment by moment, | 1:07:12
for a lasting relationship with the Lord God almighty | 1:07:16
in this life and in the age to come, | 1:07:20
that our hope really does not rest | 1:07:23
on our desire or ability to be persistent. | 1:07:25
I want to contend that you or I can be | 1:07:30
as persistent as possible, but unless the one | 1:07:33
to whom we are pleading hears and understands | 1:07:37
and responds, we could go on pleading forever. | 1:07:42
But that, my friends, is the sheer beauty | 1:07:48
and the loveliness and the goodness of the gospel, | 1:07:50
that God is going to hear. | 1:07:54
We can be persistent because we know | 1:07:59
and can rely on the character and the nature of God | 1:08:01
to be attentive and caring and concerned | 1:08:05
and gracious and accepting and forgiving. | 1:08:08
