| The Gospel lesson is from the second chapter of John | 31:32 | |
| verses 1 through 11. | 31:37 | |
| On the third day, there was a marriage | 31:40 | |
| at Cana in Galilee and the mother of Jesus was there. | 31:43 | |
| Jesus also was invited to the marriage | 31:48 | |
| with his disciples. | 31:51 | |
| When the wine gave out, the mother of Jesus said to him, | 31:53 | |
| "They have no wine." | 31:57 | |
| And Jesus said to her, "Oh woman, | 32:00 | |
| "what have you to do with me? | 32:04 | |
| "My hour has not yet come." | 32:06 | |
| His mother said to the servants, | 32:10 | |
| "Do whatever he tells you to do." | 32:12 | |
| Now six stone jars were standing there | 32:17 | |
| for the Jewish rites of purification, | 32:21 | |
| each holding 20 or 30 gallons. | 32:24 | |
| Jesus said to them, "Fill the jars with water." | 32:27 | |
| And they filled them up to the brim. | 32:32 | |
| He said to them, "Now draw some out | 32:35 | |
| "and take it to the steward of the feast." | 32:39 | |
| So they took it. | 32:43 | |
| When the steward of the feast tasted the water | 32:45 | |
| now become wine and did not know where it came from, | 32:48 | |
| though the servants who had drawn the water knew, | 32:53 | |
| the steward of the feast called the bridegroom | 32:57 | |
| and said to him, "Every man serves the good wine first | 33:00 | |
| "and when men have drunk freely then the poor wine. | 33:06 | |
| "But you have kept the good wine until now." | 33:11 | |
| This, the first of his signs, Jesus did at Cana in Galilee | 33:17 | |
| and manifested his glory and his disciples believed in him. | 33:23 | |
| The word of the Gospel. | 33:30 | |

| Have you ever seen it | 35:19 | |
| or felt it? | 35:22 | |
| Can you in any way picture it or tell another about it? | 35:25 | |
| The manifestation of the glory of God | 35:30 | |
| are the words that come at the end of the Gospel reading | 35:34 | |
| and then these words | 35:37 | |
| "His disciples believed in him." | 35:39 | |
| I puzzle a good bit about the glory of God. | 35:44 | |
| Always wondering where it is and how it looks | 35:47 | |
| and how it feels. | 35:50 | |
| Is it anywhere in this world of mine and yours? | 35:52 | |
| One day in my office I was struggling with the word. | 35:57 | |
| Reading in the prophet Isaiah, the lights went out. | 36:01 | |
| Not able to struggle with the text any longer | 36:08 | |
| from what I was reading I walked out into the hallway. | 36:10 | |
| There I met my friend and colleague, | 36:14 | |
| the late Carlyle Marney. | 36:17 | |
| He said, "John, you look a little glum. | 36:20 | |
| "What's the matter?" | 36:24 | |
| Well I smiled and said, | 36:26 | |
| "I was reading this text in Isaiah and the lights went out. | 36:28 | |
| "It was about the glory of God." | 36:33 | |
| "What do you want to know about it," he said. | 36:37 | |
| "I know all about Isaiah." | 36:40 | |
| "Good." | 36:43 | |
| "Well I'd like for you to tell me | 36:45 | |
| "about the glory of God." | 36:48 | |
| "Sometimes," he says, "it surprises you. | 36:53 | |
| "It'll grab you from behind." | 36:59 | |
| And then we spoke about the young Isaiah | 37:03 | |
| in the temple that day when his king had died. | 37:05 | |
| And suddenly the whole temple was filled with glory. | 37:09 | |
| And the angel's song was everywhere. | 37:14 | |
| And he saw himself differently. | 37:17 | |
| Well I walked on musing about the glory of God | 37:22 | |
| and when I come to those texts in scripture | 37:26 | |
| that seem somehow to really compute with my meanings | 37:29 | |
| about the manifestation of the glory of God, | 37:33 | |
| they're like that. | 37:36 | |
| A young prophet in the temple. | 37:38 | |
| An old prophet, Elijah, in a cave. | 37:41 | |
| And after an earthquake and a mighty wind and fire | 37:44 | |
| there is the soft murmuring of a gentle breeze | 37:51 | |
| and he covers his face because he knows | 37:57 | |
| the Lord God passes by. | 38:00 | |
| That speaks to me of the glory of God. | 38:05 | |
| Or that grand story of Christmas time, | 38:10 | |
| of the manger and the mother, | 38:14 | |
| of stardust and stable straw. | 38:17 | |
| Of wise men and shepherds. | 38:21 | |
| Shepherds in a Jordian hillside. | 38:23 | |
| And suddenly, | 38:25 | |
| the glory of God fills the whole sky. | 38:28 | |
| Or when Peter and James and John are on the mountaintop. | 38:34 | |
| And then their Lord is transfigured before them. | 38:39 | |
| Garments brighter than any foolish bleach could make them. | 38:43 | |
| Magdelene in the garden | 38:49 | |
| surprised when the stone is rolled away | 38:52 | |
| and the tomb is empty. | 38:55 | |
| That's the glory of God. | 38:57 | |
| But then comes this lesson. | 39:02 | |
| This lesson from the second chapter | 39:05 | |
| of the gospel of John offered | 39:07 | |
| for this Second Sunday in Epiphany, | 39:10 | |
| a time between Christmas and Lent | 39:13 | |
| when we will consider in the church | 39:16 | |
| the manifestation of the glory of God. | 39:18 | |
| And the Gospel lesson, | 39:21 | |
| a strange story about Jesus providing more booze | 39:25 | |
| for a party that has pooped. | 39:32 | |
| When the wine fails, | 39:39 | |
| is that in fact the time when you will see | 39:42 | |
| a manifestation of God's glory? | 39:45 | |
| My first struggle with the text is long ago | 39:51 | |
| and far away. | 39:54 | |
| You see I was born into a very strict religious family | 39:57 | |
| and we believed that the manifestations of true religion | 40:01 | |
| were not having anything to do | 40:08 | |
| with spirits or liquor or wine. | 40:13 | |
| We passed over rather quickly this first miracle | 40:18 | |
| where the Lord would make very good wine out of water. | 40:22 | |
| Indeed, if I wanted miracle stories | 40:29 | |
| to tell me about the glory of God, | 40:33 | |
| then give me some of those that have the blind seeing, | 40:36 | |
| the lame walking, deaf hearing, lepers being cleansed. | 40:40 | |
| Now my problem with the miracle story | 40:48 | |
| is simply that it fails to hook up. | 40:55 | |
| Fails to reach down to where the meanings are. | 40:59 | |
| When I walk through a university like this | 41:04 | |
| I know that miracles are not the categories by which | 41:07 | |
| you organize your lives. | 41:10 | |
| Not the way in which you understand your world. | 41:15 | |
| Most times we hear about miracles | 41:19 | |
| and we begin to look around for charlatans | 41:22 | |
| or at least for ignorant people who may claim too much. | 41:25 | |
| Can it be that a miracle story | 41:36 | |
| can reveal to this crowd the glory of God? | 41:40 | |
| The first question we must struggle with is this one: | 41:49 | |
| Is it really true? | 41:53 | |
| Did it really happen? | 41:56 | |
| May I confess to you that I traffic in wonder stories. | 42:00 | |
| Oh the wonder stories of folklore | 42:06 | |
| and fables where animals talk | 42:10 | |
| and miracle stories and grand stories in scripture. | 42:13 | |
| And my favorite audience for those | 42:18 | |
| is my nephew, Christopher. | 42:20 | |
| He's one of my favorite people in the world. | 42:23 | |
| He has a grand bringing together of both reason and wonder. | 42:27 | |
| His father is a neurosurgeon. | 42:35 | |
| Well-trained doctor and a scientist. | 42:38 | |
| He practices his surgery at Harvard | 42:42 | |
| and does research there in academic medicine. | 42:46 | |
| And Christopher knows that he is the child of a father | 42:50 | |
| who works in a world of science and reason | 42:55 | |
| but he's still intrigued that he has an uncle | 42:59 | |
| who's a preacher. | 43:01 | |
| And when I come around invariably he's saying, | 43:04 | |
| "Uncle John, tell me a Bible story." | 43:07 | |
| One day we were into the story of Jonah and the big fish. | 43:12 | |
| We had this runaway, disobedient prophet | 43:16 | |
| who was finally in the storm at sea. | 43:18 | |
| They cast lots to see who was the cause of it all. | 43:20 | |
| It was Jonah. | 43:22 | |
| "Throw him in the sea," they said. | 43:23 | |
| And the big fish swallowed him. | 43:26 | |
| Three days he was in the belly of the fish, praying. | 43:28 | |
| And then the fish spit him up on dry land. | 43:33 | |
| That's when my nephew couldn't stand it any longer | 43:38 | |
| and he interrupted the story. | 43:41 | |
| "Uncle John, is that part really true?" | 43:43 | |
| "Christopher," I said, "that is so true | 43:52 | |
| "that even if it never was, it always is." | 43:57 | |
| He just looked at me with those eyes | 44:03 | |
| filled with wonder and puzzle. | 44:05 | |
| But what began to happen was a dialogue | 44:09 | |
| between my brother and myself. | 44:11 | |
| He put aside his newspaper and said, "What do you mean, | 44:13 | |
| "even if it never was, it always is?" | 44:16 | |
| "Oh just that." | 44:18 | |
| There is a kind of truth that is so true | 44:20 | |
| that it is before history and beyond history. | 44:23 | |
| And it's not big enough to ask "did it happen?" | 44:28 | |
| It happens. | 44:32 | |
| There's that thing going on in the whole gospel of John. | 44:35 | |
| There are those simple surface stories | 44:40 | |
| that anybody can hear and retell | 44:43 | |
| and believe or not believe. | 44:47 | |
| But beyond those stories, behind those stories, | 44:52 | |
| before those stories, there is that truth | 44:58 | |
| that is so true | 45:05 | |
| no history can contain it, | 45:08 | |
| no happening is big enough for it. | 45:12 | |
| And as you come to them with simple child-like ears | 45:17 | |
| you may in fact know the glory of God. | 45:23 | |
| Be touched by the eternal. | 45:28 | |
| And so I bring the story again into our presence. | 45:35 | |
| Cana was not far from Nazareth. | 45:41 | |
| About three miles. | 45:44 | |
| Mary had relatives there, I dare say. | 45:48 | |
| At least she was invited to an important wedding | 45:52 | |
| and I think had a part in the arrangements for it. | 45:54 | |
| Was she the one who was hosting the banquet? | 45:58 | |
| Jesus came with at least five of his disciples. | 46:04 | |
| A wedding was a grand time. | 46:10 | |
| Life was hard in Palestine and most of it was marked | 46:14 | |
| with drudgery and misery. | 46:17 | |
| Very little joy and not much feasting. | 46:20 | |
| But then came a wedding and guests put aside the week. | 46:26 | |
| It lasted for more than a day. | 46:31 | |
| And on that special day | 46:35 | |
| the feasting moved forward with joy. | 46:39 | |
| But then, the wine gave out. | 46:43 | |
| Halfway into the party and the wine failed. | 46:48 | |
| I'd like to stop here and wonder why. | 46:53 | |
| Was it that some people came there too thirsty? | 46:57 | |
| Some of those fisherman not polite enough | 47:02 | |
| in the presence of all that wine? | 47:04 | |
| Could it be that some uninvited guests showed up, | 47:08 | |
| even the disciples of our Lord? | 47:10 | |
| Was it that the host had not prepared well enough? | 47:14 | |
| Whatever, the wine had failed | 47:20 | |
| and there was embarrassment. | 47:24 | |
| And Mary was standing before Jesus saying, | 47:26 | |
| "The wine is gone. It's done." | 47:30 | |
| "My time hasn't come yet," He said. | 47:34 | |
| And then, ignoring that, she goes on to say | 47:38 | |
| to servants, "Do whatever he tells you to do." | 47:43 | |
| Now the wonderful part. | 47:48 | |
| Close to the door are six large stone jars. | 47:50 | |
| Each of them will hold 20 or 30 gallons. | 47:55 | |
| They are there for water for purification rites. | 48:00 | |
| Jesus says to the servants, "Fill them to the brim | 48:04 | |
| "so nothing else can be added. | 48:08 | |
| "Now take a dipper of that to the steward of the feast." | 48:11 | |
| He tastes it. | 48:15 | |
| "That's good wine. The best we've had yet tonight." | 48:16 | |
| And I suppose that 180 gallons | 48:23 | |
| of new wine will make the party go on and on and on. | 48:30 | |
| Consider with me, brothers and sisters, this: | 48:44 | |
| That the first place we really begin to know the color | 48:47 | |
| and tone of our lives | 48:51 | |
| is when the exhilarations of life begin to fade. | 48:54 | |
| When all of the sparkle begins to go away. | 48:59 | |
| We're so optimistic at the beginning of a new semester. | 49:04 | |
| Walk into classes saying, "This time I'm going to ace it." | 49:07 | |
| But that's before there have been too many nights | 49:12 | |
| with the wine. | 49:17 | |
| (laughter) | 49:19 | |
| Life always seems to rise with such promise, | 49:26 | |
| such hope, | 49:29 | |
| and then it fades. | 49:34 | |
| Well it always does, doesn't it? | 49:37 | |
| Every sunrise finally surrenders to evening. | 49:41 | |
| All of the light finally turns to darkness. | 49:46 | |
| And the days of our years finally end. | 49:52 | |
| What is young becomes old. | 50:01 | |
| What is strong becomes weak. | 50:05 | |
| I'm fascinated that the gospel of John | 50:11 | |
| wants to turn that all around, | 50:13 | |
| wants to say the light shines | 50:16 | |
| and if there is darkness the light still shines. | 50:20 | |
| And if you think it is sunrise running to sunset, | 50:23 | |
| turn it around, turn it around. | 50:27 | |
| If you think it is wine failing, | 50:30 | |
| turn it around. | 50:32 | |
| Well there's a new splendor and a new glory | 50:36 | |
| and a new life-giving power here. | 50:38 | |
| Have to do with it, believe it. | 50:40 | |
| F.W. Boreham in preaching on this text noted | 50:48 | |
| that when life's exhilarations fade | 50:52 | |
