10 days ahead of time, | 33:55
as we who preach in the chapel must do. | 33:58
Thus, the sermon topic for this morning, | 34:02
I would like to share with you, | 34:05
is taken from the Philippians passage, | 34:07
which was read as our Epistle lesson | 34:10
for this third Sunday in Advent. | 34:12
The topic is Rejoice in the Lord Always. | 34:15
Let us pray. | 34:21 | |
Now may the words of my lips | 34:27

There are some passages in Scripture | 34:46
that make absolutely no sense whatsoever, | 34:51
or may even seem absurd, | 34:56
certainly at times unbelievable. | 35:01
Some passages are just too much. | 35:05
They cannot be true or accurate or descriptive or normative | 35:08
for life, for faith, or for Christian living. | 35:14
And yet some of these words are in Scripture. | 35:19
One such passage for me is the Epistle lesson | 35:25
for this third Sunday in Advent, | 35:29
Philippians 4:4-8. | 35:31
These words, it seemed to me, are some of those words | 35:35
which reveal the real skandalos, | 35:37
the skandalos of the gospel, | 35:40
the sheer unbelievability of the Word, | 35:43
the high demands, the extraordinarily high expectations | 35:46
of the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ. | 35:50
For Paul writes, "Rejoice in the Lord always. | 35:53
"Again I will say rejoice." | 35:58
And then he goes on to say, | 36:02
"In everything, in everything by prayer and supplication | 36:03
"with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God." | 36:07
Some passages of Scripture give me difficulty | 36:13
because they are too hard or are too demanding | 36:16
or are too clear for me or are too mysterious | 36:20
or too profound. | 36:23 | |
But not these words. | 36:26
This passage for me is too inclusive, | 36:28
too comprehensive, too complete. | 36:33
It is too total. | 36:36 | |
"Rejoice," Paul says, "always. | 36:39
"In everything | 36:43 | |
"give thanks. | 36:45 | |
Now pray tell me this morning, who rejoices always? | 36:47
And who gives thanks in everything? | 36:54
When I read and hear these words, | 37:01
"Rejoice in the Lord always," | 37:03
I'm reminded of a dear and highly-respected professor | 37:06
of mine, Dr. William Stinespring, who taught Old Testament | 37:09
in the Divinity School when I was a student here. | 37:13
Uncle Dudley, we affectionately and respectfully called him. | 37:17
And every time any one of us would say, | 37:22
"This word always means" or "this passage always says" | 37:25
or "one should always use this word this way," | 37:31
dear old Uncle Dudley would pause | 37:34
and put his fingers together | 37:37
or put his hand to the side of his mouth | 37:39
and purse his lips and say, | 37:42
"My dear friends, always is a bad word. | 37:43
"You should never use always." | 37:49
Clearly wanting us to know that nothing in Scripture | 37:53
or in life is ever true always, | 37:59
in other words, there is always an exception to always. | 38:02
Rejoice in the Lord always. | 38:09
Or are these words just words and not really intended | 38:12
for us to take them at face value? | 38:16
When Paul tells us to rejoice in the Lord always, | 38:19
are these just empty, meaningless, ordinary words, | 38:21
not to be taken seriously? | 38:25
These words are in the imperative mood. | 38:28
We are told to rejoice in the Lord always. | 38:31
This is a command, a directive, or an order | 38:34
from Paul to the church, to us today. | 38:37
"Rejoice in the Lord always." | 38:42
But then there is a reason. | 38:46
There is a reason, a cause to rejoice always. | 38:49
Paul writes, "Rejoice in the Lord always, | 38:52
"for the Lord is at hand." | 38:55
Zephaniah writes, "The Lord is in your midst. | 39:03
"The Lord your God is in your midst," he says. | 39:11
That is cause to rejoice, even always. | 39:18
The Lord is at hand. | 39:27
But I find it awfully hard to rejoice today. | 39:31
I even find it hard to rejoice in the Lord today. | 39:36
I'm reminded of a passage | 39:42
in Nikos Kazantzakis' | 39:43
immortal book, Zorba the Greek. | 39:48
Zorba is speaking to his friend known as Boss. | 39:53
Some of you remember that Zorba's world | 40:00
was really not unlike the world of ours today. | 40:02
It was pictured as a world in which millions | 40:06
were sinking into despair | 40:09
because they hadn't a crust of bread | 40:11
to sustain their bodies or their souls. | 40:13
At one point, Zorba says to Boss, | 40:17
"Boss, let people be! | 40:20
"Don't open their eyes. | 40:24
"For if you do, they will see. | 40:27
"And you know what they will see? | 40:32
"They will see their misery. | 40:36
"Leave their eyes closed," he says, | 40:39
"unless when they open their eyes, | 40:44
"you can show them a better world | 40:46
"in which they are living." | 40:49
So I want to cry out to Paul this morning. | 40:53
Paul, don't talk to us. | 40:55
Don't open our eyes. | 40:58
Don't show us, don't speak to us and say to us, | 41:00
"Rejoice in the Lord always," | 41:03
unless you can show us cause to rejoice, | 41:05
otherwise please, dear friend Paul, | 41:10
let us keep our eyes, our ears, our hearts, our very lives | 41:14
closed and locked and sealed. | 41:17
Life will not hurt as much that way, you see. | 41:20
Life is tough, Paul, but it is really much harder | 41:22
on those who have seen a better way | 41:26
and yet still suffer and are denied and deprived. | 41:29
How can you rejoice in the Lord always? | 41:35
If, as is the case with our own Willy Mason here | 41:39
in the Duke community, | 41:43
if your apartment has burned up completely, | 41:44
and if indeed, as is the case with Mr. Mason, | 41:48
this is the second time all of your earthly possessions | 41:51
have burned within the space of four years' time, | 41:54
and if you have two grandchildren | 41:57
who suffered terribly from the burns, | 42:00
and if one of your daughters dies in the fire, | 42:02
rejoice always? | 42:06 | |
Could you or I rejoice just now, this moment, this morning | 42:10
if a brother or a sister or son or daughter | 42:14
or even a very close friend of ours | 42:16
was one of the 50 hostages in Iran just now? | 42:18
43 days have gone by, my friends. | 42:23
Patience gone, anger and fear welling up inside those | 42:26
who are close to those who are held hostage. | 42:31
Rejoice always? | 42:34 | |
How could you rejoice this morning? | 42:40
If one of the 11 youths killed | 42:43
in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania recently, | 42:46
when thousands of young people swarmed the doors | 42:49
to get into a rock concert, | 42:51
how could you rejoice this morning | 42:54
if one of these young persons was a brother or sister | 42:56
or very close friend of yours, | 42:59
one who had been crushed and died? | 43:01
Absolutely absurd behavior, crazy, wild, animal behavior. | 43:04
How could we rejoice? | 43:09
"Rejoice always," Paul writes? | 43:15
Now you begin to see why I find Paul's words | 43:18
so absolutely unbelievable and unthinkable | 43:21
and incongruous for life and faith and for Christian living. | 43:24
He must've been out of his head, weird, crazy maybe even, | 43:28
a religious fanatic perhaps. | 43:32
But then it occurred to me that Paul is simply calling | 43:34
for what he has experienced. | 43:40
For Paul has come to know | 43:43
a profound, real, present, lasting joy in the Lord. | 43:47
And this joy for Paul is always with him. | 43:54
Therefore he writes, "Why not expect it to be present | 43:58
"and alive and real for all Christians?" | 44:02
Why not rejoice always? | 44:06
Further it also occurred to me that it is | 44:08
as you and I experience the polarities of life | 44:11
that we come to know the meaning of life. | 44:15
It's only when you're thirsty that a cup of water | 44:18
really tastes good. | 44:21
It's only when you're absolutely, utterly all alone | 44:23
that a presence has meaning, real meaning. | 44:26
When you are in absolute pitch darkness, | 44:32
then just a little candle gives much hope, doesn't it? | 44:34
When you have been sick, | 44:40
very seriously ill, then good health | 44:44
takes on new meaning, doesn't it? | 44:47
Or when you have been worried and anxious | 44:50
about the unknown, | 44:52
some word of certainty and surety brings relief, doesn't it? | 44:54
After the storm | 44:59 | |
calm always has a new beauty, doesn't it? | 45:01
If you have been rejected and put down, | 45:08
then, then you come to know | 45:12
appreciation and affirmation. | 45:16
Perhaps it is only as we experience the polarities of life | 45:20
that we know the meaning of life. | 45:24
Then perhaps those who have known suffering and sadness | 45:29
and estrangement and lossness and separation most | 45:34
can appreciate what it is to rejoice in the Lord always. | 45:37
Perhaps in the life of obedience and faith | 45:42
that Paul had lived, | 45:44
he had earned his credentials and had had the experiences | 45:45
and had earned the right to tell us | 45:49
to rejoice in the Lord always. | 45:51
Listen to how Paul describes, | 45:54
not boastfully but, I presume, just factually | 45:56
the life which he lived. | 45:59
Five times he said, | 46:01
"I have received at the hands of the Jews | 46:02
"the 40 lashes less one. | 46:04
"Three times I have been beaten with rods. | 46:07
"Once I was stoned. | 46:10
"Three times I have been shipwrecked. | 46:12
"A night and a day I had been adrift at sea, | 46:15
"in danger from rivers, robbers, from my own people, | 46:18
"from the Gentiles, in toil and hardship | 46:21
"and hunger and thirst, in cold and exposure." | 46:25
He also was sick off and on all of his life, | 46:29
and spoke of a thorn in the flesh that God gave him, | 46:32
he said, "to keep me from being too elated." | 46:35
Epilepsy, hysteria, who knows? | 46:39
Sometimes his depression was so great | 46:41
that one gets the feeling | 46:44
that Paul could hardly take his pencil | 46:45
and take it from one side of the page to the other. | 46:47
Frederick Buechner, in his book Peculiar Treaures, | 46:51
writes about Paul, | 46:55
"The ups and the downs, | 46:58
"the fights with his enemies, | 47:00
"and the fights with his friends, | 47:02
"the endless trips with a fever and with diarrhea, | 47:04
"keeping one jump ahead of the sheriff, | 47:08
"giving his spiel on windy street corners | 47:11
"with nobody much to hear him. | 47:13
"Where was it all going to get him in the end? | 47:16
"Where was it all going to get all of them | 47:19
"or any of them in the end? | 47:22
"When you come right down to it, what was God up to | 47:24
"for God's sake? | 47:28 | |
"Sending them all out, prophets, apostles, evangelists, | 47:30
"teachers, the whole tattered bunch, | 47:34
"to beat their gums and work themselves into an early grave? | 47:38
"Is this what it was all about?" | 47:42
Yes, as one reads this description of Paul's life, | 47:46
one must say that he had earned the right | 47:49
to speak to us and to say to us, | 47:51
"Rejoice in the Lord always." | 47:54
One who has been through all of that surely has a right | 47:59
to say to you or to me no matter what our troubles, | 48:01
"Rejoice in the Lord always, | 48:07
"and again I say rejoice." | 48:11
My friends in Christ, on this third Sunday in Advent, | 48:15
nine days before we celebrate again the birth | 48:20
of Christ the King, Christ our Lord, Christ our Savior, | 48:22
it is hard to rejoice. | 48:26
It was hard for Zephaniah and his people, | 48:29
it was hard for Paul and the early church, | 48:31
and it is hard today. | 48:34
Zephaniah is addressing a slum of the northern kingdom, | 48:37
refugees from Jerusalem they were. | 48:42
And he tells them, | 48:46
"Rejoice | 48:48 | |
"and shout aloud." | 48:50
Rejoice and shout aloud an unexpected and unwarranted call | 48:52
to joy in the midst of almost total distress | 48:56
for these people. | 48:59
The prophet is telling the people | 49:00
that joy is not rated or is not maintained | 49:02
by happy or good circumstances, | 49:05
but that joy is quite simply something that is received. | 49:07
Zephaniah is pronouncing the presence of joy. | 49:15
It is available, he says. | 49:20
Joy is, in the words of CS Lewis, the "utter reality." | 49:24
And Zephaniah writes again, "Fear not oh Zion. | 49:31
"Be not discouraged. | 49:34
"The Lord your God is in your midst, a mighty Savior. | 49:36
"He will rejoice over you with gladness | 49:41
"and renew you in His love. | 49:44
"He will sing joyfully because of you | 49:47
"as one sings at festivals." | 49:49
For the prophet, joy is, first and finally, | 49:52
what is happening all around. | 49:56
Paul also, in writing to the Philippians | 50:00
from his prison chains, | 50:02
pours out his heart, | 50:06
calling for them always and in every way | 50:09
to know and to experience joy. | 50:11
The New Jerusalem Bible says, | 50:13
"I want you to be happy. | 50:15
"Always happy in the Lord. | 50:17
"I repeat, what I really want is your happiness." | 50:19
Zephaniah and Paul in the Word for today | 50:25
are calling us to wholeness and holiness. | 50:28
They take us far beyond our existential conditions | 50:32
and our happy feelings to another source, I believe, | 50:36
to a bottomless well where joy is drawn and received | 50:40
in obedience and in faithfulness. | 50:44
They know and tell us, | 50:48
and this was a new insight to me this week. | 50:51
I don't know what you have thought joy is | 50:55
or how it comes or how we experience it. | 50:57
But I think they are telling us | 51:03
that joy finally is a decision that we make. | 51:04
Joy is something we decide for or against, | 51:09
something we accept or reject, | 51:13
something we enter into or walk around, | 51:15
something we let into our lives, | 51:18
or is something we keep out. | 51:20
Living in joy or out of joy is, | 51:22
in the final and important moment, | 51:26
something that we choose to do or choose not to do. | 51:28
It's like Viktor Frankl, the German psychiatrist | 51:34
who spent many months in Nazi concentration camps | 51:36
during the Second World War. | 51:40
And one of his writings says, | 51:42
"There is one freedom | 51:44
"that no one and nothing can ever take away from any of us. | 51:47
"And that one freedom which no one and nothing | 51:54
"can ever take away is the right to choose one's attitude | 51:57
"in any given set of circumstances." | 52:01
I guess that may be why God's Word | 52:11
constantly makes the choice for or against life our choice. | 52:13
"Choose you this day whom you will serve. | 52:20
"As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord. | 52:22
"I put before you this day life or death. | 52:26
"Choose you. | 52:29 | |
"If anyone will come after me, let him or her come unto me. | 52:30
"Come, take up your cross and follow me." | 52:36
Choice, choice, choice. | 52:39
If you and I are waiting on God to give us | 52:42
a fault-free environment, or an anxiety-free atmosphere, | 52:45
or a risk-free way of life, or a tension-free life to live, | 52:52
then I think we had best forget it. | 52:58
Not any or all of these | 53:02
will ensure our happiness or our joy. | 53:04
I am convinced that joy is, finally, a decision | 53:07
that each of us makes or does not make. | 53:11
You and I can choose life, or we can choose death. | 53:15
We can choose to be miserable. | 53:20
We can choose to be joyful. | 53:23
You can choose to wallow, to be lost, to be estranged | 53:26
and to be separated, to be alone, to be alienated, | 53:30
to be empty, to be sad and lonely and heartsick | 53:33
and woeful and sinsick, or you can choose life. | 53:36
You can choose to be joyful. | 53:43
We simply are called in these passages | 53:49
to recognize the joy of the Lord in our midst. | 53:52
Recognize it, trust it, believe it, and receive it. | 53:56
Receive it as did Mary, | 54:00
poor, little old innocent, God-chosen Mary. | 54:03
"Do not be afraid, Mary, | 54:08
"for you have found favor with God. | 54:11
"You will conceive in your womb and bear a son, | 54:14
"and you shall call his name Jesus." | 54:16
All she had to do was receive it. | 54:19
Receive it as did Zechariah, the father of John the Baptist. | 54:22
Blessed be the Lord God of Israel, | 54:26
for God has visited and redeemed His people. | 54:28
Receive it. | 54:33 | |
Receive it as did the shepherds in the fields. | 54:35
"And the angel said to them, 'Be not afraid, | 54:39
"'for behold, I bring you good news of a great joy, | 54:42
"'which shall be to all the people. | 54:47
"'For to you is born this day | 54:48
"'in the city of David a Savior.'" | 54:50
Receive it. | 54:53 | |
Receive it as did the aging Simeon, who said, | 54:55
after seeing Jesus when Jesus was brought into the Temple, | 54:58
"Lord, now let us Thy servant depart in peace, | 55:01
"for mine eyes have seen Thy salvation." | 55:06
All he did was receive it. | 55:10
Every once in a while, you come across a line or a word | 55:16
or a truth that really registers clearly | 55:19
and forcibly on you. | 55:23
It may not be anything new | 55:24
or it may not be written in a novel way, | 55:25
but all of a sudden it just hits you, | 55:27
and the meaning comes clear. | 55:30
It's sort of like a student was telling me this week | 55:33
after studying for a religion exam. | 55:35
In reading in 1 John chapter 3 verse 11, the words, | 55:39
"For this is the message which you have heard | 55:47
"from the beginning that we should love one another." | 55:50
And the student said, | 55:54
"I read that, and I had heard it. | 55:56
"I probably had even read it many times before, | 55:58
"but when I read that I said, 'Yeah! | 56:01
"'That's the truth!' | 56:03
"And it's been there from the very beginning." | 56:04
Well, in a way similar to that, | 56:09
I came across a word or a statement the other day | 56:11
by Fr. Murray Bodo | 56:16
that had a similar impact on me. | 56:19
He writes, | 56:22 | |
"The presence of God in your life, | 56:25
"you cannot merit | 56:33
"such an experience." | 56:37
That's not new. | 56:43 | |
It's not novel. | 56:45 | |
It's not cleverly written, | 56:47
but the impact, my friends, was very real to me. | 56:51
So I read them. | 56:56 | |
And I read them again. | 56:58
"The presence of God in your life, | 57:00
"you cannot merit such an experience." | 57:03
And I read them again. | 57:08
And I reflected, and I meditated on the words. | 57:11
And then I prayed. | 57:15
I prayed about these words, | 57:18
and then I said, "Yes, that is it. | 57:19
The presence of God, | 57:22
the presence of God in our lives, you, we, | 57:25
we cannot merit such an experience. | 57:27
We really cannot. | 57:31
We cannot earn it or deserve it or work for it. | 57:33
But then thanks be to God. | 57:40
Even if we are never aware of God's presence | 57:44
or of God's closeness with us, | 57:47
God is still dwelling within us and around us. | 57:49
We simply have to commit ourselves | 57:52
to make a decision to accept it | 57:54
and recognize God's presence. | 57:56
I have come to believe | 58:01
that those people who make space in their lives for joy, | 58:04
those who prefer joy at some times over everything else, | 58:09
those who really desire the reality of joy, | 58:14
those who earnestly seek to find and experience joy | 58:17
and live joy, those who pray for joy, | 58:21
those who decide for joy are those who will experience joy. | 58:26
The Lord your God is in your midst. | 58:39
Barbara Hitsquith writes in her book, | 58:46
A Sunday in the 30s, these words. | 58:51
She writes about her Uncle Frank. | 58:59
"My Uncle Frank," she says, "who lived in New York City | 59:04
"and had a beautiful Mexican mistress | 59:10
"who was always trying to bring him back to the faith. | 59:13
"My Uncle Frank was an atheist. | 59:18
"But he used to say, | 59:23
"'All I know about Jesus is | 59:27
"'He never used a gun, | 59:33
"'He had no use for money, | 59:37
"'He never burned anyone at the stake, | 59:41
"'and by God He never turned His back on anybody.'" | 59:46
