- | The Psalmist writes, | 23:15 |
God is our refuge and strength, | 23:17
a very present help in trouble. | 23:19
Therefore we will not fear, though the earth should change, | 23:23
though the mountains shake in the heart of the sea. | 23:26
Though its waters roar and foam. | 23:30
Come, behold the works of the Lord. | 23:34
He makes wars to cease to the end of the earth. | 23:38
He breaks the bow and shatters the spear. | 23:42
Be still, and know that I am God. | 23:47
I am exalted among the nations. | 23:52
The Lord of hosts is with us. | 23:56
God of Jacob is our refuge. | 23:59
My friends in Christ, | 24:04
it is our privilege to come before the presence of God, | 24:06
to offer our prayers of confession, | 24:12
to experience his mercy, | 24:15
and to receive his forgiveness. | 24:18
Let us now, with one voice, | 24:21
confess our sin to almighty God. | 24:23
Let us pray. | 24:27 | |
Almighty God, Our Father, | 24:29
you have created us for life together. | 24:31
We confess that we have turned from your will. | 24:35
We have not loved one another, as you have commanded. | 24:38
We have been quick to claim our own rights | 24:42
and careless of the rights of others. | 24:45
We have taken much and given little. | 24:48
Forgive our disobedience, O God, | 24:51
and strengthen us in love, | 24:54
so that we may serve you as a faithful people | 24:57
and live together in your joy. | 25:01
Through Jesus Christ, our Lord. | 25:04
Amen. | 25:07 | |
Let us continue with our personal confession | 25:09
to the Lord, our God. | 25:13
John writes, this is the message we have heard from him | 25:41
and proclaim to you. | 25:45
God is light | 25:48 | |
and in him is no darkness at all. | 25:51
If we say we have fellowship with him | 25:54
while we walk in darkness, | 25:56
we lie and do not live according to his will. | 25:58
But if we walk in the light, | 26:03
as he is in the light, | 26:05
we have fellowship with one another. | 26:08
The blood of Jesus Christ, his Son, | 26:11
cleanses us from all our sin. | 26:13
Beloved, let us walk in the light | 26:18
with one another. | 26:22
Amen. | 26:24 | |
Let us give thanks | 26:27
for God is good | 26:29 | |
and God's love is everlasting. | 26:32
(congregation murmuring) | 26:36
Amen. | 26:50 | |
On a beautiful November day, | 26:52
which feels almost like spring, | 26:54
may I welcome you to Duke Chapel | 26:57
and to this special service of worship. | 26:59
I pray for you a blessed Thanksgiving week. | 27:03
Those of you who will have some time for rest, | 27:08
may it be a time of rest and renewal and recreation. | 27:10
There will be, on Thanksgiving Day of this week, Thursday, | 27:16
for the first time, at least in many years, | 27:22
a service of worship here in Duke Chapel. | 27:26
The service will be at 11:00 a.m., | 27:29
this Thursday, Thanksgiving Day. | 27:32
You and others in the community are invited to come | 27:34
and share in that time of thanksgiving with us. | 27:37
I've been asked to announce that tonight at 8:15, | 27:42
rather than some other times which have been announced, | 27:45
the Collegium Musicum will present its concert. | 27:48
A concert of music of Heinrich Schutz. | 27:52
You're invited to that concert, there is no charge. | 27:55
The concert will begin at 8:15 p.m. here in the chapel. | 28:00
I'm pleased this morning to say a word of welcome | 28:06
to one whom you have already met | 28:10
in the service of worship on All Saints Day. | 28:12
The Reverend Ms. Juanita Wright began her service here | 28:15
as assistant minister to the University on November the 1st. | 28:19
She presided on All Saints Day | 28:24
and many of you saw her | 28:27
and shared in her leading of that service. | 28:28
She comes to us from nine years of service | 28:31
with The Board of Global Ministries | 28:34
of The United Methodist Church in New York City. | 28:35
She's a native of Tennessee, | 28:38
ordained in the United Methodist Church, | 28:40
educated at Vanderbilt University, | 28:43
and Union Theological Seminary in New York City. | 28:45
She has had many years experience in ministry, | 28:49
in a variety of settings. | 28:53
She is a writer. | 28:56 | |
She has done much creative work in the area of worship. | 28:57
She has been involved in many significant issues | 29:01
and social causes of the church. | 29:03
She has done a good bit of counseling. | 29:07
She has been an editor for our church. | 29:10
So she brings a diversity of experiences and interests | 29:14
to Duke University and to this position. | 29:19
I am pleased that she is here and I know | 29:22
that those of you who will be meeting her | 29:25
and sharing in ministry with her will be pleased as well. | 29:27
I say a word of welcome and present to you Juanita Wright. | 29:31
Today is a special day for us because for five years now, | 29:38
at least once a year, | 29:43
we have selected a student to preach in Duke chapel. | 29:44
Shortly after I was appointed minister of the university, | 29:48
some students suggested that to me | 29:51
and I thought it was an excellent idea. | 29:53
We've had some outstanding sermons | 29:55
preached by students here at Duke. | 29:57
Ed Richardson, a junior in Trinity College, | 30:00
majoring in zoology with special interest in marine biology | 30:03
has been selected by the student committee | 30:08
and invited by the minister to university, | 30:11
to preach on this day. | 30:13
He is from College Park, Georgia | 30:15
and has many interests from singing with the chorale, | 30:18
to being involved in dramatic productions, | 30:23
to serving as a tutor for children | 30:26
who have learning disabilities. | 30:29
One who has had an influence on the lives | 30:32
of many in this community, | 30:34
a junior in Trinity College, | 30:36
Ed, we welcome you and we look forward to the word | 30:39
which you will share with us a little later in the service. | 30:42
Now, let us continue our worship of Almighty God. | 30:46
Let us pray. | 30:51 | |
O Lord, our God, | 30:55 | |
as we read and receive thy word, | 30:57
may we be open and accepting to the truth | 31:02
and the promise that thy word offers to us | 31:06
and to all people. | 31:09
Make us, O God, | 31:12 | |
both receptive and responsive | 31:15
to the truth that thou hast for us this day. | 31:19
Through Jesus Christ, our Lord. | 31:23
Amen. | 31:27 | |
The Old Testament lesson is Psalms 100. | 31:31
Let us hear the word of God. | 31:35
Make a joyful noise to the Lord, all the lands! | 31:40
Serve the Lord with gladness! | 31:44
Come into his presence with singing! | 31:46
Know that the Lord is God! | 31:50
It is he that made us, and we are his. | 31:53
We are his people, and the sheep of his pasture. | 31:57
Enter his gates with thanksgiving, | 32:02
and his courts with praise! | 32:04
Give thanks to him, bless his name! | 32:07
For the Lord is good. | 32:11
His steadfast love endures forever, | 32:13
and his faithfulness to all generations. | 32:17
Here ends the reading of the Old Testament lesson for today. | 32:21

- | Let the congregation stand for the reading of the Gospel. | 35:47 |
The Gospel lesson for this morning | 35:54
is from the Gospel according to St. Matthew, | 35:56
chapter 20, verses 20 through 28. | 35:59
Let us hear the word of God. | 36:02
Then the mother of the sons of Zeb'edee | 36:06
came up to him, with her sons, | 36:08
and kneeling before him she asked him for something. | 36:11
And he said to her, "What do you want?" | 36:15
She said to him, | 36:18 | |
"Command that these two sons of mine may sit, | 36:20
"one at your right hand and one at your left, | 36:24
"in your kingdom." | 36:27
Jesus answered, "You do not know what you are asking. | 36:29
"Are you able to drink the cup that I am to drink?" | 36:34
They said to him, "We are able." | 36:39
He said to them, "You will drink my cup, | 36:42
"but to sit at my right hand and at my left hand | 36:45
"is not mine to grant, but it is for those | 36:48
"for whom it has been prepared by my Father." | 36:52
And when the 10 heard it, | 36:57
they were indignant at the two brothers. | 36:58
Jesus called them to him and said, | 37:02
"You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, | 37:05
"and their great men exercise authority over them. | 37:09
"It shall not be so among you, | 37:13
"whoever would be great among you must be your servant, | 37:16
"and whoever would be first among you must be your slave. | 37:22
"Even as the Son of man came not to be served but to serve, | 37:27
"and to give his life as a ransom for many." | 37:32
Here ends the reading of the Gospel lesson. | 37:37
All praise and glory be to God. | 37:40
Amen. | 37:43 | |
(light organ music) | 37:45
- | Here is a picture. | 39:00 |
You're playing baseball, | 39:04
it's the bottom of the ninth, | 39:06
the score is tied. | 39:09
There are two outs and your team is at bat. | 39:12
You're at the plate | 39:18
facing the pitcher who has struck out the last four batters. | 39:20
He winds up, he throws. | 39:25
You close your eyes and swing the bat. | 39:29
There's a crack, | 39:33 | |
as the ball is sent climbing through the air | 39:35
and then disappearing beyond the left field fence. | 39:38
The umpire signals, home run! | 39:43
And your teammates rush out to greet you | 39:46
as the bat boy scampers under foot to find the loose bat. | 39:49
There are cries of hero from the screaming crowd. | 39:53
As the fans pour out onto the field | 39:58
and the scoreboard flashes the final score. | 40:01
Your dad in the third row is all smiles. | 40:06
Your mom can only say, "That's my boy." | 40:11
Would you like an instant replay? | 40:18
If you're a coach, a baseball player, a fan or a parent, | 40:21
you probably would say, "Yes, let's see that play again." | 40:27
You probably won't think my instant replay is very exciting. | 40:34
Because it focuses on the bat boy, | 40:39
not the hero. | 40:42 | |
It goes like this, | 40:45
the boy scampers around, under foot, to find the loose bat. | 40:49
In fact, the only person | 40:56
who might appreciate my instant replay is another bat boy. | 40:59
But I'm convinced that this bat boy, | 41:06
who performs a small service for his team, | 41:09
illustrates a quality which each of us should display | 41:14
in our daily lives. | 41:19
It's a quality of service. | 41:22
Matthew's Gospel, read earlier, | 41:27
tells us that in order to be saved, we must be servants. | 41:30
So you say, what do you mean by a servant? | 41:36
Well, a servant is defined | 41:42
as a person who labors or exerts himself | 41:45
for the benefit of another, a master or employer. | 41:49
So you say, he's trying to get me to believe | 41:55
that I have to hire my life out to someone | 42:00
in order to be saved? | 42:03
This isn't exactly true. | 42:07
There's only one person who is our master. | 42:10
So, the logical question we must face this morning is, | 42:15
who is our master? | 42:21
In order to find an answer to this, | 42:25
we examine the life of Christ, | 42:28
whose actions served as the example for all Christians. | 42:30
In his life, we see the constant devotion | 42:35
to the will of God, his master. | 42:38
Even until death. | 42:42
Although Christ died for our sins, | 42:45
he died because God willed his death. | 42:48
He practiced a life of complete devotion to God, his master. | 42:53
If we understand that we should follow Christ, | 43:00
and Christ's master is God, | 43:04
then we realize that our true master is God. | 43:08
We can serve no other thing or person ahead of God | 43:12
and still maintain an intimacy with God through Christ. | 43:17
Yup. | 43:25 | |
It seems clear, I believe, | 43:26
that we do not always submit ourself | 43:27
constantly to God's will. | 43:31
We often lose sight of the fact that we are God's creatures | 43:34
and that we, as his creation, owe him our total devotion. | 43:40
Other times, our knowledge of sin takes away | 43:47
our courage to approach God. | 43:50
Our sin creates in us a fear of God. | 43:53
But our attitude when we approach God | 43:59
should not be one of fear, | 44:01
instead we should give ourselves completely | 44:04
to God's loving care. | 44:07
The most essential attitude we should adopt as a servant | 44:11
is self-denial. | 44:16 | |
'Cause only through self-denial are our powers set free | 44:19
to devote themselves totally to God. | 44:23
Christ's example is one of self-denial, | 44:29
in addition to humility and obedience to the cross. | 44:32
Well, we say, where's this freedom through Christ | 44:39
I've heard so much about? | 44:43
Why should I give up my freedom just so I can serve Christ? | 44:46
Either I serve him and am not set free | 44:51
or I choose freedom instead, | 44:56
and lose God's salvation through Christ. | 44:59
But look, through serving Christ, | 45:04
we are set free. | 45:09 | |
Free from sin. | 45:12 | |
Through God, we gain a greater victory | 45:16
than we could ever accomplish alone. | 45:19
We become capable, with God's help, | 45:23
to reign or rule as masters | 45:26
over our own faculties and powers | 45:31
and over the created things around us. | 45:33
We come to know ourselves better | 45:38
and begin to understand what is wrong in our own lives. | 45:41
We can gain, through our service to God, | 45:48
an intimacy and blessed communion of life | 45:50
and knowledge and love with God himself. | 45:55
Jesus asked us, "Are you a wise and faithful servant? | 46:01
"Blessings on you, | 46:09
"if I return and find you faithfully doing your work." | 46:10
In Revelation, we read that those who are saved | 46:15
and serve the Lord, | 46:19
will be fed by the lamb, who will be their shepherd | 46:20
and lead them to the springs of the water of life. | 46:26
And God will wipe their tears away. | 46:31
Look what God has promised us. | 46:38
More love, more compassion than we could find anywhere. | 46:42
And you know what? | 46:48
You don't even have to be a minister | 46:53
to be able to serve God. | 46:56
Service to God can be seen | 47:00
throughout the Christian community. | 47:01
There is diversity of action, but unity of purpose. | 47:04
We are all part of Christ's body, | 47:11
which has many needs | 47:13
and therefore many different expressions of service | 47:14
to meet these needs. | 47:17
We won't all be the hero who hits a home run, | 47:20
but I think all of us, | 47:24
regardless of our occupation, | 47:26
can be a servant for Christ, | 47:28
like the bat boy. | 47:31 | |
A bat boy receives no recognition | 47:34
from the multitudes at the stadium. | 47:37
His only comfort is the satisfaction of knowing | 47:40
he is helping out the team by doing an act of service. | 47:43
Each of us, if we adopt the outlook of the bat boy, | 47:50
has a similar calling in our lives. | 47:55
It is the calling to serve our neighbors. | 47:59
The calling to be a neighbor to each person we encounter. | 48:02
And of actively helping him when he comes across our path. | 48:08
Whether it be on the quad, on the athletic field, | 48:13
in our office, in our room, | 48:21
at 2:00 a.m. in the morning, | 48:25
or even the night before our major geology exam. | 48:28
In becoming servants of our neighbor, | 48:35
we serve God and Christ, | 48:37
who commands us in Galatians to be, through love, | 48:41
servants of one another. | 48:45
By serving God through serving our neighbors, | 48:48
we can lead them to understand God, | 48:50
and lead them to understand his love. | 48:54
So that they too, will want to express this love. | 48:57
I don't feel that Matthew's Gospel | 49:03
asks us to be on hand and knee before everyone we encounter. | 49:05
Certainly, you would laugh at me this morning | 49:11
if I told you that you should serve your family | 49:13
breakfast in bed everyday. | 49:16
Or do your secretary's typing tomorrow when you go to work. | 49:19
Can you imagine the heart attacks which would be reported | 49:26
if each one of you students here this morning | 49:31
went back to your room | 49:36
and offered to do your roommate's laundry? | 49:39
I know that in my own situation, | 49:46
I would probably be busy all afternoon. | 49:49
(congregation laughs) | 49:52
I won't mention any names. | 49:55
But this literal interpretation of Matthew | 50:00
is not emphasized in the remainder of the New Testament. | 50:03
Well, what then is Matthew talking about? | 50:08
The Living Bible paraphrases Jesus' words as follows, | 50:14
"Your attitude must be like my own, | 50:19
for I, the Messiah, | 50:24
"did not come to be served, but to serve, | 50:26
"and to give my life as a ransom for many." | 50:29
"We see that the very life of Christ | 50:34
was centered on serving God through serving man. | 50:36
Jesus gives us a clear example | 50:42
of fulfilling the role of servant | 50:45
in several instances of his life. | 50:47
His washing of the disciples' feet | 50:51
is perhaps the most well-known. | 50:52
In this act of servanthood, | 50:56
Jesus shows his great love for his disciples. | 50:58
He also charges us to find ways | 51:03
to express our love for one another. | 51:07
We begin now to realize that our obligation | 51:13
is one towards the needs of our friends and neighbors. | 51:17
But you say, I've got enough problems of my own. | 51:22
How can I help someone else | 51:27
when I don't even have control of my own life? | 51:30
Love. | 51:35 | |
Love is the key. | 51:38 | |
Love provides the main support for this mission. | 51:40
First Corinthians says, | 51:44
if you love someone, you will be loyal to him | 51:46
no matter what the cost. | 51:51
You will always believe in him, | 51:54
and always stand your ground in defending him. | 51:56
This is what service is all about. | 52:03
Loving, caring, forgetting about oneself, | 52:06
and being sensitive to the needs of the person | 52:11
who lives across the hall or across the street. | 52:13
I hope no one is keeping count | 52:20
of the number of times I've avoided an opportunity | 52:21
God has given me to be a servant, a friend, to my neighbor. | 52:25
To listen to a problem, to share a problem of my own, | 52:32
to comfort and to encourage my friends, | 52:38
rather than ignore them in favor of | 52:42
other important affairs. | 52:45
You know, it doesn't take much to be a servant. | 52:52
I think the most precious memories of my grandfather | 52:56
were the times when he would babysit | 53:00
for my sisters and brother and me. | 53:02
Of course, we often wondered who was taking care of who, | 53:06
for my grandfather had a slight tendency to fall asleep, | 53:12
and we were always checking to see | 53:16
if the cigar had fallen out onto the chair. | 53:17
But you know, my granddad was a servant | 53:22
because my grandad had love. | 53:27
Yes, you have to give of yourself to be a servant. | 53:32
You have to be willing to love | 53:38
and be willing to express your love. | 53:41
But don't worry, with God's love inside of you, | 53:46
you can never give too much of yourself. | 53:50
The more you give, the more you radiate the love | 53:54
which God has given you. | 53:58
Shel Silverstein's book, "The Giving Tree," | 54:03
is a favorite of mine. | 54:07
He tells the story of the relationship | 54:10
between a tree and a man. | 54:13
Of how when the man was a young boy, he loved the tree. | 54:16
The tree literally sacrificed itself | 54:22
for the worldly needs of the growing boy. | 54:26
Everyday, the boy would come to the tree to eat its apples, | 54:31
swing from its branches or slide down the trunk. | 54:36
The tree was happy. | 54:43
But as the boy grew older, | 54:46
he began to want more from the tree | 54:48
and the tree gave and gave and gave. | 54:51
The last pages of the poem | 54:57
relate how the boy, now an old and withered man, | 54:59
returns to the tree for the last time. | 55:05
After a long time, the boy came back again. | 55:12
"I am sorry, boy," said the tree. | 55:16
"But I have nothing left to give you. | 55:19
"My apples are gone." | 55:22
"Oh, my teeth are too weak for apples," said the boy. | 55:25
"Well, my branches are gone," said the tree. | 55:31
"You cannot swing on them." | 55:34
"I am too old to swing on branches," said the boy. | 55:38
"Well, my trunk is gone," said the tree, "You cannot climb." | 55:43
"I am too tired to climb," said the boy. | 55:48
"I am sorry," said the tree. | 55:53
"I wish that I could give you something, | 55:55
"but I have nothing left. | 55:58
"I am just an old stump. | 56:00
"I am sorry." | 56:04 | |
"Oh, I don't need very much now," said the boy. | 56:07
"Just a quiet place to sit and rest. | 56:12
"I am very tired." | 56:17
"Well," said the tree, | 56:20
straightening herself up as much as a stump could do, | 56:22
"Well, an old stump is good for sitting and resting. | 56:28
"Come, boy, sit down, sit down and rest." | 56:34
And the boy did, and the tree was happy. | 56:41
