	Or do you despise the Church of God	19:31
	and humiliate those who have nothing.	19:33
	What shall I say to you?	19:37
	Shall I commend you in this?	19:39
	No, I will not.	19:42
	For I receive from the Lord what I also deliver to you.	19:45

	Where do you find Jesus in Indianapolis?	21:09
	That question was put by the English Shakespearian	21:13
	director Ronald Eyre at the beginning of the PBS series,	21:16
	"The Long Search."	21:22
	Incidentally, this BBC series on world religions	21:25
	is carried every Sunday this fall at two p.m.	21:28
	on public television.	21:32
	An alternative, if you will,	21:36
	to the endless professional football games.	21:37
	And on this Sunday particularly,	21:42
	many of us may not want to be reminded of football.	21:45
	Ronald Eyre pursued this question,	21:52
	"Where do you find Jesus?",	21:54
	and Jesus through three Indianapolis churches.	21:56
	A huge, what I would call, Fighting Fundamentalists	22:00
	Independent Baptist Church.	22:03
	A so called, main stream United Methodist Church.	22:05
	And a lively church, also Baptist,	22:10
	in the midst of a Black ghetto.	22:14
	The Fighting Fundamentalist Church seemed to be interested	22:18
	primarily in such things as confuting	22:20
	the theory of evolution.	22:23
	The Methodist Church was obviously interested	22:26
	in fighting teenage crime and other social ills.	22:28
	But it was in the Black church,	22:34
	in the other Baptist church,	22:36
	and in its combination of spirited worship	22:38
	and social outreach	22:41
	that Eyre thought Jesus might be found.	22:44
	Indeed, had been found.	22:48
	I was struck,	22:51
	as you may have been if you were watching the program,	22:52
	with the quickness and the directness with which	22:56
	Eyre got to the question of Jesus.	22:58
	It is often seemed to me that secular religious programs	23:02
	avoid talk about Jesus like the plague.	23:05
	But Eyre obviously saw that talk about Christianity	23:08
	or Christian churches leads inevitably	23:12
	to the question of Jesus.	23:16
	Where do you find Jesus in Indianapolis?	23:18
	Where do you find Him in Durham?	23:21
	Where in Duke Chapel?	23:24
	Today we come together to celebrate the Lord's Supper.	23:27
	Here Christians down through the centuries have found,	23:31
	or sought to find, Jesus.	23:34
	Jesus and the salvation that he brings.	23:37
	We do well to remind ourselves of whom and what we seek	23:41
	before we proceed further into this service.	23:46
	The Christians of Corinth about whom we have just read,	23:51
	obviously forgot to do this, or neglected to do it.	23:54
	According to Paul, the celebration of the Lord's Supper	23:59
	in the Corinthian Church had become	24:02
	something of a mob scene.	24:04
	The reasons for this may be obscure,	24:06
	but they're not important to us.	24:08
	In any event, the situation had deteriorated	24:10
	so that the purpose of the service and of the occasion	24:12
	had been lost.	24:17
	And Paul writes,	24:18
	When you meet together, it is not the Lord's Supper	24:19
	that you eat.	24:23
	Then after a suitable upbraiding of the Corinthians	24:27
	for their misbehavior,	24:30
	Paul knew nothing of	24:31
	indirect method of counseling or admonition,	24:32
	he rehearses once again, the familiar words of institution	24:37
	of the Lord's Supper.	24:40
	The Lord Jesus on the night he was betrayed,	24:43
	took bread.	24:48
	The reader is reminded	24:50
	that in partaking of the Lord's Supper,	24:52
	one partakes of and participates in	24:55
	the body and blood of Christ.	24:58
	To eat and drink without discerning the body,	25:02
	as Paul says, is to profane the elements,	25:05
	and thus to insult Christ himself.	25:08
	The result is not participation and fellowship,	25:12
	fellowship in the body and blood of Christ,	25:15
	but dissolution and condemnation.	25:18
	Because of this, Paul's injunction to examine ourselves	25:24
	and to partake with discernment	25:27
	is always worth our hearing.	25:30
	But let us turn our attention to the grounds	25:33
	of Paul's exhortation to the Corinthians.	25:37
	This is, after all, the foundation of the new covenant.	25:42
	Jesus is in some very real sense present	25:48
	in the celebration of the Lord's Supper.	25:52
	Probably these import of 16th century debates	25:56
	over the means and mode of Christ's presence	26:00
	in the Lord's Supper is lost on many or most of us.	26:03
	Especially if we're low church Protestants.	26:07
	And yet we can at least appreciate a central point	26:11
	of that controversy.	26:15
	Christians debated vigorously these questions	26:17
	because they felt that the reality of Jesus' presence	26:19
	was at stake.	26:23
	The Lord's Supper answers to the perennial question	26:25
	put to and by Christians.	26:28
	Where do you find Jesus?	26:31
	Where do you look for Him?	26:33
	Around the Lord's table, we find an answer to that question.	26:36
	Now perhaps that's enough to say,	26:42
	but I feel impelled to expand briefly upon that answer,	26:44
	as well as to emphasize it.	26:49
	The Christians' quest for Jesus is in fact	26:53
	always in danger of becoming	26:57
	simply a quest for our own security	26:59
	and our own tranquility.	27:02
	Blessed assurance Jesus is mine.	27:05
	The intention of that gospel hymn,	27:09
	may be quite sound and valid.	27:12
	But the expression of is it not without its dangers.	27:14
	Jesus cannot be used for our purposes.	27:17
	When Paul begins to recite the words of institution,	27:21
	he says, "The Lord Jesus,	27:25
	"on the night when he was betrayed."	27:28
	And thus Paul sets these words in their proper context:	27:32
	the death of Jesus.	27:37
	That death was a public event,	27:39
	as well as a private experience.	27:42
	And as he speaks of the death of Jesus,	27:45
	he reminds us of who Jesus was and what He did.	27:48
	That is	27:55
	He reminds us of the light of Jesus.	27:58
	"Do this in remembrance of me," says Jesus.	28:01
	Who Jesus is can never be separated	28:08
	from who He was.	28:12
	And as we learn who Jesus was,	28:14
	we know that to find Jesus	28:18
	is to find one who disturbs our own peace	28:19
	in order to give us a peace of a different order.	28:23
	We cannot command him.	28:28
	He commands us.	28:31
	I read the Religion columns of Newsweek with great interest.	28:35
	About two weeks ago, Newsweek reported	28:40
	a fresh investigation of the famous Turin Shroud.	28:43
	And that was the Turin Shroud was allegedly	28:47
	the burial robe of Jesus himself.	28:50
	On that shroud, as you may have read,	28:54
	there seems to be visible,	28:58
	the life-sized imprint of the face and figure of a man.	28:59
	The shroud is thought to be ancient.	29:05
	And the imprint, also ancient,	29:08
	not the result of painting or other artificial reproduction.	29:11
	And the question is,	29:17
	what caused it?	29:19
	Newsweek suggests the possibility of a quasi photographic	29:22
	process brought about by some brilliant flash of light.	29:25
	Such light, as is traditionally associated	29:29
	with the glorification and resurrection of Christ.	29:32
	All this, of course, awaits further testing.	29:37
	Naturally, profane, as well as Christian curiosity	29:42
	is fascinated by the prospect of some dramatic	29:45
	scientific confirmation of the reality of Christ	29:48
	and His resurrection.	29:52
	And yet, as even the editor of Newsweek points out,	29:55
	faith in the resurrection is something more	30:00
	and other than this.	30:03
	The faith that is distinctly Christian	30:06
	does not hinge upon such signs and wonders.	30:09
	That faith, that faith, finds its vindication,	30:14
	its proof, if you will, in a congregation in Indianapolis	30:19
	which feeds thousands of poor people	30:24
	turkey dinners on Thanksgiving,	30:26
	and runs a vocational training center	30:29
	in an abandoned school building.	30:31
	The pastor of that church says,	30:35
	says very simply,	30:37
	"Unless we love one another, we can't have faith.	30:39
	"We can't find Jesus.	30:44
	"We cannot command his presence whether by scientific proof,	30:48
	"or by our religious rights.	30:54
	"Jesus becomes real for us as we obey His command	30:57
	"to love one another."	31:02
	That is certainly true.	31:06
	If anything in the Gospel is true, that is true.	31:08
	But it doesn't nullify what we do here today.	31:11
	Rather it justifies and interprets	31:16
	what we now do.	31:20
	For around this table, we celebrate Jesus.	31:23
	Who he was, and what he means.	31:28
	Moreover, Jesus Himself commands this celebration.	31:32
	Do this in remembrance of me.	31:37
	Our celebration is not simply the memorial	31:42
	of a great historic figure.	31:45
	But neither is it some mystical or magical transaction	31:48
	whereby we assure ourselves of the kind of salvation	31:51
	that we would like.	31:55
	In the presence of one another,	31:58
	and in the presence of the scriptural word about Jesus,	32:01
	we gather around His table.	32:05
	Where do you find Jesus in Indianapolis?	32:10
	Where in Durham?	32:14
	Where in Duke Chapel?	32:18
	Jesus may or may not be found in any of these places.	32:21
	But He is to be found as we wait upon	32:28
	the gift of God's grace,	32:30
	in the partaking of bread and wine.	32:33
	The body and blood of the Lord Jesus,	32:38
	which is given for you.	32:42
	Amen.	32:45

	Today is Worldwide Communion Sunday.	42:11
	All of us, particularly those of the Roman Catholic faith,	42:16
	were shocked and aggrieved by the death of Pope John Paul I.	42:22
	It seems to me that,	42:31
	in any Christian gathering this day,	42:33
	it would be appropriate, but particularly as we celebrate	42:35
	the sacrament of our Lord's Supper,	42:39
	it would be most appropriate,	42:41
	for us to remember him and his life,	42:43
	and all our fellow Christians who share	42:47
	this moment of sorrow together.	42:50
	Will you join with me and with others as we remember him.	42:52
	Gracious God,	43:08
	for Pope John Paul I,	43:11
	for his goodly gifts and kindly ways,	43:15
	his gentle humanness for all that he has meant	43:21
	to your church and to your world,	43:27
