- | Let us hear the word of God, | 19:36 |
as it is contained in the Gospel | 19:38
according to Matthew 6:25-34. | 19:40
Therefore I tell you, do not be anxious about your life, | 19:49
what you shall eat or what you shall drink, | 19:55
nor about your body, what you shall put on. | 19:58
Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing? | 20:03
Look at the birds of the air, | 20:09
they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, | 20:11
and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. | 20:14
Are you not of more value than they? | 20:19
And which of you by being anxious | 20:22
can add one cubic to his span of life? | 20:24
And why are you anxious about clothing? | 20:29
Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow, | 20:32
they neither toil nor spin. | 20:35
Yet I tell you, even Solomon in all his glory | 20:38
was not arrayed like one of these. | 20:42
But if God so clothes the grass of the field, | 20:45
which today is alive and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, | 20:48
will He not much more clothe you, O you of little faith? | 20:53
Therefore do not be anxious, saying, "What shall we eat?" | 20:59
or "What shall we drink?" or "What shall we wear?" | 21:02
For the Gentiles seek all these things, | 21:05
and your heavenly Father knows that you need them all, | 21:07
but seek first His Kingdom and His righteousness, | 21:11
and all these things shall be yours as well. | 21:14
Therefore do not be anxious about tomorrow, | 21:19
for tomorrow will be anxious for itself. | 21:24
Let the day's own trouble be sufficient for the day, | 21:27
amen. | 21:33 | |

Which of you, by being anxious, can add to his span of life, | 21:40

Roger Shin calls anxiety | 22:20
life's deepest personal problem. | 22:23
And so I ask myself, | 22:27
"Bob, about what things | 22:28
or what experiences are you anxious?" | 22:31
And a whole host of fears come rolling up and rolling out: | 22:35
death, pain, sickness, cancer, falling, | 22:39
failing, loneliness, heartache, heartbreak, | 22:44
being rejected, losing, darkness, | 22:49
lightning, night, not succeeding, | 22:53
not having enough money, | 22:57
not being loved, not loving, | 22:59
not being wanted, not being needed. | 23:02
I'm afraid to live, to live life to the fullest. | 23:06
I'm afraid to die, to face the unknown and the unknowable. | 23:11
I'm afraid to be too successful, | 23:16
to get more than I really can handle, | 23:19
I'm afraid to fail | 23:22
because to fail might be more than I could bear. | 23:24
I doubt that there is any ordinary human fear | 23:29
that has not crossed my mind, | 23:32
or slept in my thoughts, or walked by my side, | 23:34
or sunk in my soul. | 23:37
You have probably had them, | 23:40
most of them. | 23:44 | |
Look for a moment at this passage | 23:46
from the Sermon on the Mount. | 23:48
Jesus said to the disciples, | 23:50
"Oh, men of little faith," | 23:51
and I ask, "How did he know?" | 23:53
He had just met these men; | 23:56
they had only been together a short period of time. | 23:59
He knew very little about them, | 24:01
and they knew little about him. | 24:03
How did he know that they were men of little faith? | 24:06
Well, you could say | 24:10
that Jesus was omnipotent and omniscient, | 24:11
all powerful and all knowing, | 24:15
but I prefer to think | 24:16
that Jesus spoke with authority about his disciples | 24:18
because he knew human nature. | 24:21
Jesus had not been with them long enough to know them, | 24:26
but he had lived long enough to know | 24:29
that we are all men of little faith. | 24:32
He knew that man lives with little faith, | 24:38
that faith is fleeting, | 24:41
that we get just a glimpse, | 24:43
that our grip slips away just as quickly as it grasps, | 24:46
that we know one moment and know not the next, | 24:51
that we hear and then we're deaf, | 24:55
that we see, and then go blind. | 24:57
He knew that faith comes and it goes. | 25:00
Samuel H. Miller puts it this way, | 25:03
"Believing means | 25:06
"that a man must stand at the edge of uncertainty, | 25:07
"where the dark dims the sureness of his sight, | 25:11
"and he must still find a solid stone | 25:15
"for a forward step. | 25:19
"It means that a man must do more | 25:20
"than add things together in some sort of precarious pile; | 25:22
"he must find a way of fitting them together." | 25:26
Viktor Frankl in "Man's Search for Meaning" says, | 25:32
"He who has a 'why' to live for, | 25:35
"can bear with almost any 'how'," | 25:38
and he should have known. | 25:40
After his years in the German concentration camps, | 25:43
living with fear, death, starvation, | 25:46
deprivation, hunger, and pain, | 25:49
just as Jesus should have known, | 25:51
and just as some of you know. | 25:53
Know that anxiety is a part of the fabric | 25:58
of the human predicament. | 26:01
Anxiety is written into everyone's book of life. | 26:04
Anxiety is curved into the sculpture of every person. | 26:09
Anxiety is real, it's honest, | 26:14
it's present, it's personal. | 26:16
Jesus knew this. | 26:19 | |
You know this. | 26:22 | |
Jesus did not say, "Seek ye first the Kingdom of Heaven, | 26:24
"and you'll have no fear, no worry, no anxiety." | 26:27
No, Jesus said, "Seek you first the Kingdom of Heaven," | 26:30
and then he said, "Do not be anxious about tomorrow, | 26:34
"for tomorrow will be anxious for itself." | 26:37
In other words, one day's dose is enough. | 26:40
Yesterday's tomorrow, that is today, | 26:44
has all the anxiety in it we need. | 26:47
Today has its own cares and they are enough. | 26:51
Some days, one day has more than enough. | 26:56
John McGuire, in "The Dance of the Pilgrim" writes, | 27:02
"The world in which we live, | 27:05
"as depicted by contemporary American novelists | 27:07
"and as reflected in their own titles, | 27:11
"is 'lonely', 'strange', 'hollow', or 'alien'. | 27:13
"The hero is 'shipwrecked', 'thirsty', | 27:19
"or beset by 'disaster'." | 27:22
"'And in the history of this man on earth', | 27:25
"comments lgnazio Silone, | 27:27
