	On this first Sunday after Pentecost,	18:13
	also called Trinity Sunday,	18:16
	the lectionary rewards us with what I consider a real treat,	18:19
	an entire reading of the first creation account	18:24
	in the book of Genesis.	18:27
	In an eloquent course of affirmations,	18:29
	the priestly writer proclaims,	18:32
	"And God said, 'Let there be...' and it was so."	18:34
	Light, darkness, dry land, the sun, the moon, the stars,	18:40
	living creatures of every sort imaginable,	18:46
	including even humankind,	18:49
	all responded to God's call into being	18:53
	in an orderly, dignified procession.	18:56
	Like a proud parent, God was moved to proclaim	19:00
	at the end of each day, it was good,	19:04
	until the very end of the sixth day,	19:07
	after God dared to create humanity,	19:10
	and then God pronounced the creation very good.	19:15
	Thus, the heavens and the Earth were finished,	19:19
	and all the host of them,	19:22
	and on the seventh day, God rested.	19:25
	One of my favorite parts.	19:29
	What a wondrous thing is the hearing of this story,	19:32
	even if only for a few moments,	19:34
	we are called to lay aside our worldly preoccupations.	19:36
	Deadlines at the office, decisions about new paint,	19:41
	or should it be wallpaper for the kitchen?	19:45
	Getting the children ready for their summer excursions.	19:48
	We are called to ponder,	19:52
	insofar as our limited imaginations,	19:54
	and whatever courage we can muster will allow us,	19:57
	we are called to ponder the Creator of the universe.	19:59
	I am impressed by Annie Dillard's suggestion	20:05
	that when we come to church, perhaps we should all	20:08
	be wearing crash helmets.	20:11
	So powerful is the absolute	20:14
	upon which we are attempting to gaze.	20:16
	"I often think of the set pieces of liturgy	20:20
	as certain words which people have successfully	20:23
	addressed to God without getting killed," she writes,	20:26
	"Who are we, mere mortals,	20:31
	to presume upon the one who called the world into being,	20:34
	who created us, created us,	20:39
	sojourners in a land we did not make.	20:42
	A land with no meaning in and of itself,	20:46
	and no meaning that we alone can make for it.	20:50
	Who are we to demand explanations of God?"	20:54
	"God is at home," said Meister Eckhart.	20:59
	"We are in the far country."	21:03
	Such is the sense of awe and of mystery	21:08
	which Genesis 1 inspires in me.	21:11
	I never have understood the shortsightedness	21:15
	of those who would quibble over the problem	21:17
	of just exactly how God did it,	21:18
	often quibbling at the expense of other,	21:22
	much more pressing matters.	21:25
	I am more inspired to consider the nature of a God	21:27
	who chose to create in the first place.	21:29
	What does it really mean when the author	21:35
	of Genesis 1 tells us that we, after all,	21:36
	are made in the image of God?	21:40
	The church calendar affords us the perfect opportunity	21:45
	for reflecting on the mysterious nature of God	21:49
	on this Trinity Sunday.	21:51
	Unlike other feast days in the church year	21:54
	that celebrate a particular event in the life of the church,	21:56
	we take this occasion to affirm God as three in one.	22:00
	Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.	22:05
	The Old Testament reading eloquently points us	22:09
	toward God as creator, craftsperson of the world,	22:11
	mother and father to us all.	22:14
	Yet the New Testament tells of a command	22:17
	where Jesus calls the disciples to baptize,	22:20
	not only in the name of the Creator,	22:24
	but of the Father, and of the Son,	22:26
	and of the Holy Spirit.	22:28
	What was this new way of talking about God?	22:32
	How was this different, or was it?	22:35
	From the monotheistic God of the Jews,	22:38
	what did this mean about who Jesus was?	22:41
	Well it's not surprising that the church	22:45
	should require at least four centuries	22:47
	to wage the debate about the Trinitarian nature of God,	22:49
	for the New Testament never really gives us	22:52
	an actual doctrine of the Trinity.	22:55
	Christians, of course,	22:58
	inherited from the Jews monotheism,	22:59
	or the belief in one God.	23:01
	Yet they asserted that in Jesus Christ	23:03
	there was a special revelation about God.	23:07
	In Christ, God created everything.	23:11
	"Christ is the image of the invisible God",	23:14
	we read in the letter to the Colossians.	23:16
	"In union with Christ, all things hold together.	23:19
	In Christ all things are reconciled unto God."	23:22
	So to be Christian is to assert that Jesus Christ	23:27
	has reshaped human knowledge about God.	23:30
	But how?	23:34
	The early Christians knew that it was essential	23:36
	to explain this relationship between Jesus and God,	23:38
	at least as best such things could be explained.	23:42
	They had to develop a language	23:45
	which would point toward the mystery of God	23:47
	in an inclusive way.	23:50
	One which would keep them from backsliding	23:52
	into the polytheism of the superstitious times	23:54
	preceding them,	23:57
	but which would also prevent Jewish monotheism	23:59
	from undermining the significance of Jesus Christ.	24:02
	The formula which they finally agreed upon	24:06
	says that God is three persons in one nature	24:08
	or substance.	24:14
	Or as the Athanasian Creed puts it,	24:16
	"For there is one person of the Father,	24:18
	another of the Son, and another of the Holy Ghost,	24:20
	but the Godhead of the Father and of the Son	24:24
	and of the Holy Ghost is all one."	24:27
	Sounds quaint, far-fetched, maybe even totally obscure?	24:33
	How could anything be three and one?	24:38
	Well consider for a moment what you yourself see	24:42
	as you look in the mirror each morning.	24:44
	First of all, there's the interior life	24:46
	known only to yourself and those you choose	24:49
	to communicate it to.	24:52
	Then there's the visible face,	24:55
	which in some measure reflects that inner life.	24:56
	And then there's the invisible power you have,	25:00
	power to communicate that interior life	25:04
	in such a way that others do not merely know about it,	25:07
	but they know it in the sense	25:11
	of becoming part of who they are.	25:13
	Yet what you look at is clearly and indivisibly	25:16
	the one and only you.	25:19
	Likewise, the church has struggled since its beginning	25:23
	to articulate an understanding of three in one	25:27
	which would withstand the test of time.	25:31
	And what has it concluded?	25:34
	First of all, that God remains incomparable and mysterious,	25:36
	as surely as Genesis 1 depicts him or her.	25:41
	Even our language is too limited	25:46
	to describe the true nature of God.	25:48
	As the Old Testament affirms,	25:51
	"I am God.	25:52
	And there is no other.	25:54
	I am God, and there is none like me."	25:57
	And so, to speak of God as Trinity in no way	26:02
	attempts to plumb the depths of the divine mystery,	26:05
	or to define God's essence.	26:08
	The most esoteric formula in the world	26:11
	could never do that.	26:13
	But what it does mean is that the mystery of God	26:15
	is no longer simply beyond us	26:17
	in the far reaches of a star-spangled creation,	26:20
	active in the distant past but now content to observe us	26:23
	and the quandaries of our existence.	26:26
	The mystery of God is also among us	26:29
	in the flesh and blood of Jesus Christ,	26:33
	and within us, in the power of the Holy Spirit	26:36
	in Christ's church.	26:39
	Such is the greatness and the miracle	26:41
	of God's presence in the world.	26:43
	But to speak of the Trinity says something more about God	26:47
	and the way God is within God's self.	26:51
	It says that God does not need creation	26:56
	in order to have something to love.	26:59
	Unlike the sentiments of the poet who wrote,	27:03
	"And God said, 'I'm lonely, I'll make me a world'",	27:06
	it is possible for love to be present within God's own self.	27:09
	The three persons of God,	27:15
	Father, Son, and Holy Spirit,	27:17
	exist not in loose configuration of individuals,	27:21
	but in unique relation to each other.	27:23
	God's own existence is thus rooted in dynamic community.	27:27
	Within God's own self, there is a special energy	27:33
	which expresses the love of God	27:37
	as we have experienced it in Jesus Christ.	27:39
	Consider the example of two people who fall in love.	27:44
	A friendship may exist between two person for years,	27:48
	a relationship is there, but it is static.	27:51
	Then suddenly it changes,	27:55
	and it comes alive with intense feeling.	27:57
	Lover and loved are one.	28:00
	The individuals shine, and discover themselves	28:03
	in the love of the other.	28:06
	Their caring is so deep and full	28:08
	that it spills over into the lives	28:10
	of all those who surround them.	28:13
	To believe in God as three in one	28:17
	is to suggest that there is an inner relational energy	28:20
	within God's own self,	28:24
	which spills over into the Christian life.	28:26
	The unity of the Trinity is never static,	28:30
	substance or even familial relationship.	28:33
	It exists as open and loving community.	28:36
	Seen in this light, to speak of the Trinity	28:42
	is to assert that relationship is fundamental to God.	28:45
	Community is the foundation of God's interaction	28:51
	with the world.	28:54
	Much theology has wanted to emphasize the dominance of God,	28:57
	and the hierarchy of creation,	28:59
	but an understanding of the Trinity contains the vision	29:02
	that for us to be created in God's own image	29:06
	is to live in community with others.	29:10
	Community that understands partnership,	29:14
	mutuality, and a self-giving nature	29:17
	to lie at the heart of its calling.	29:20
	Community where men and women live without privilege	29:23
	or subjection to each other.	29:26
	Where standards of nurturous responsibility and care	29:28
	are not only proclaimed, but maintained.	29:32
	Instead of posing as an unnamed Creator	29:37
	who makes a world and moves on,	29:40
	God has set the example.	29:43
	God as community calls us to shared participation	29:46
	and responsibility.	29:51
	Understood in this way, the doctrine of the Trinity	29:54
	sets forth a radical ethic of justice and care.	29:57
	It sees that the self and the other	30:02
	should be treated as of equal worth,	30:04
	that despite differences in power,	30:07
	there's a place for each.	30:09
	That every member should be included,	30:12
	and no one needs to be left alone.	30:15
	It sees morality as a problem of inclusion,	30:17
	rather than simply a balancing of claims.	30:20
	Just as the love of human lovers	30:25
	sometimes invades our lives with its passion,	30:27
	so God's community will not let us rest.	30:31
	Christ came to heal, to reconcile,	30:36
	and to invite the world to enter freely	30:40
	and fully into the Divine life.	30:42
	On this Trinity Sunday, we commune at the Lord's table	30:47
	as a witness to God's saving community.	30:51
	Here we retell a story	30:55
	which rekindles the flame of love within each of us.	30:57
	We bring with us images of brokenness,	31:01
	not only of our own,	31:03
	but of a world that cries out for healing.	31:05
	In our gathering this morning,	31:10
	may we embrace God's call out of the world	31:13
	to be about God's work in the world,	31:17
	as testimony to the living reality of Almighty God.	31:20
	Three in one.	31:25

	loving and serving the whole of humankind?	36:14
	Lead us, we pray, into such unity of purpose,	36:20
	that we may receive power.	36:24
	Not the power to threaten or destroy,	36:27
	but the power to restore waste places.	36:30
	Use us to declare Your glory,	36:35
	that blind eyes may see, and deaf ears hear,	36:37
	and the cynical be brought to faith.	36:41
	Spirit of truth, we live in a modern Babel,	36:46
	where words are used to conceal meaning	36:49
	rather than to make it plain.	36:52
	We pray Lord God that you will lead the peoples of the world	36:55
	into such a love of truth	36:58
	that nation may speak with nation.	37:01
	Not seeking to confuse,	37:04
	but to understand and to be understood,	37:06
	wherein trust is created and out of which	37:10
	a truly international community may be born.	37:13
	Creator Spirit, You give to the old	37:20
	the capacity to dream dreams,	37:22
	and to the young to see visions,	37:25
	but because we exalt ourselves	37:28
	and our desires to the place that is yours alone,	37:30
	our visions are visions of horror,	37:34
	and our dreams become nightmares.	37:37
	Raise up, we beseech You, leaders and priests	37:41
	and artists and prophets among us	37:45
	so to inspire and to cleanse our society.	37:48
	And to set our hearts aflame	37:52
	and to turn our eyes to Your heights.	37:54
	Spirit of the living God,	38:00

	we pray for the lonely, for the sick,	38:03

Thus, for us to be created in God's image means that we are called by God to enter into loving communion with one another and with God, a type of relationality not marked by imbalances of power and selfishness but of mutuality and self-giving.
