| minister of Fordham United Methodist Church | 13:52 | |
| in the Bronx, New York. | 13:55 | |
| Reverend Cox is well-known throughout Methodism | 13:57 | |

| and was the first woman to preach | 14:01 | |
| an entire series of sermons on The Protestant Hour. | 14:03 | |
| We are indeed privileged to welcome her to our pulpit today. | 14:06 | |
| We also welcome as our guest musicians, the Raleigh Consort | 14:10 | |

| This is the day the Lord hath made, | 14:30 | |
| let us rejoice and be glad in it. | 14:32 | |
| (organ begins playing) | 14:40 | |
| - | Almighty God, who through your only begotten son, | 18:41 |
| Jesus Christ, overcame death | 18:44 | |
| and opened to us the gate of everlasting life. | 18:47 | |
| Grant that we, | 18:52 | |
| who celebrate with joy, the day of the Lord's resurrection, | 18:53 | |
| may be raised from the death of sin | 18:57 | |
| by your life-giving spirit. | 18:59 | |
| Through Jesus Christ, our Lord, | 19:01 | |
| who lives and reigns with you | 19:04 | |
| and the Holy Spirit, one God, | 19:05 | |
| now and forever. | 19:08 | |
| Amen. | 19:10 | |
| - | Let us pray, | 19:21 |
| Open our hearts and minds, O God, | 19:24 | |
| by the power of your Holy Spirit. | 19:27 | |
| So that as the word is read and proclaimed | 19:30 | |
| we might hear with joy what you say to us this day. | 19:34 | |
| Amen. | 19:39 | |
| The first lesson is taken from the book of Acts. | 19:41 | |
| And Peter opened his mouth and said, | 19:46 | |
| "Truly, I perceive that God shows no partiality, | 19:48 | |
| "but in every nation anyone who fears him | 19:52 | |
| "and does what is right is acceptable to him. | 19:56 | |
| "You know the word which he sent to Israel, | 20:00 | |
| "preaching good news of peace by Jesus Christ, | 20:02 | |
| "the Lord of all. | 20:06 | |
| "The word which was proclaimed throughout all Judea, | 20:07 | |
| "beginning from Galilee | 20:11 | |
| "after the baptism which John preached. | 20:13 | |
| "How God anointed Jesus of Nazareth | 20:16 | |
| "with the Holy Spirit and with power. | 20:19 | |
| "How he went about doing good | 20:22 | |
| "and healing all that were oppressed by the devil, | 20:24 | |
| "for God was with him. | 20:28 | |
| "We are witnesses to all that he did, | 20:30 | |
| "both in the country of the Jews and in Jerusalem. | 20:33 | |
| "They put him to death by hanging him on a tree, | 20:37 | |
| "but God raised him on the third day | 20:41 | |
| "and made him manifest, | 20:43 | |
| "not to all the people, | 20:45 | |
| "but to those of us who were chosen by God as witnesses, | 20:47 | |
| "who ate and drank with him after he rose from the dead. | 20:52 | |
| "He commanded us to preach to the people | 20:57 | |
| "and to testify that he is the one ordained by God | 21:00 | |
| "to be judge of the living and of the dead. | 21:04 | |
| "To him, all the prophets bare witness | 21:07 | |
| "that everyone who believes in him | 21:10 | |
| "receives forgiveness of sins through his name." | 21:12 | |
| This ends the reading of the first lesson. | 21:17 | |
| The second lesson is taken from the book of Revelation. | 21:19 | |
| After this I looked, and behold, | 21:24 | |
| a great multitude which no man could number. | 21:27 | |
| From every nation, | 21:30 | |
| from all tribes and peoples and tongues, | 21:32 | |
| standing before the throne and before the Lamb, | 21:35 | |
| clothed in white robes, with palm branches in their hands, | 21:39 | |
| and crying out with a loud voice, | 21:43 | |
| "Salvation belongs to our God who sits upon the throne, | 21:46 | |
| "and to the Lamb!" | 21:51 | |
| And all the angels stood 'round the throne | 21:53 | |
| and 'round the elders and the four living creatures, | 21:56 | |
| and they fell on their faces before the throne | 21:59 | |
| and worshiped God, saying, | 22:02 | |
| "Amen! Blessing and glory and wisdom | 22:05 | |
| "and thanksgiving and honor and power and might | 22:08 | |
| "be to our God forever and ever! Amen." | 22:12 | |
| Then one of the elders addressed me, saying, | 22:17 | |
| "Who are these, clothed in white robes, | 22:20 | |
| and whence have they come?" | 22:23 | |
| I said to him, "Sir, you know." | 22:25 | |
| And he said to me, | 22:27 | |
| "These are they who have come out of the great tribulation. | 22:28 | |
| "They have washed their robes and made them white | 22:32 | |
| "in the blood of the Lamb. | 22:35 | |
| "Therefore are they before the throne of God. | 22:37 | |
| "And serve him day and night within his temple. | 22:41 | |
| "He who sits upon the throne | 22:44 | |
| "will shelter them with his presence. | 22:46 | |
| "They shall hunger no more, neither thirst anymore. | 22:49 | |
| "The sun shall not strike them, nor any scorching heat. | 22:53 | |
| "For the Lamb in the mist of the throne | 22:57 | |
| "will be their shepherd, | 22:59 | |
| "and he will guide them to springs of living water, | 23:00 | |
| "and God will wipe away every tear from their eyes." | 23:04 | |
| This ends the reading of the second lesson. | 23:08 | |
| (chorus singing) | 23:53 | |
| - | Good morning. | 28:31 |
| The gospel lesson is from the gospel of Luke, | 28:33 | |
| chapter 15 verses one through three | 28:37 | |
| and verses 11 through 32. | 28:41 | |
| Now the tax-collectors and sinners | 28:48 | |
| were all drawing near to hear him. | 28:51 | |
| And the Pharisees and the scribes murmured saying, | 28:55 | |
| "This man receives sinners and eats with them." | 28:59 | |
| So he told them this parable, | 29:04 | |
| There was a man who had two sons. | 29:09 | |
| And the younger of them said to his father, | 29:12 | |
| "Father, give me the share of the property | 29:16 | |
| "that falls to me." | 29:18 | |
| And he divided his living between them. | 29:21 | |
| Not many days later the younger son gathered all he had | 29:25 | |
| and took his journey into a far country, | 29:29 | |
| and there he squandered his property in loose living. | 29:33 | |
| When he had spent everything, | 29:39 | |
| a great famine arose in that country, | 29:42 | |
| and he began to be in want. | 29:45 | |
| So he went and joined himself | 29:50 | |
| to one of the citizens of that country, | 29:52 | |
| who sent him into his fields to feed swine. | 29:54 | |
| And he would gladly have fed on the pods that the swine ate | 30:00 | |
| and no one gave him anything. | 30:04 | |
| But when he came to himself he said, | 30:09 | |
| "How many of my father's hired servants | 30:14 | |
| "have bread enough and to spare, | 30:17 | |
| "but I perish here with hunger!" | 30:20 | |
| I will arise and go to my father, | 30:24 | |
| and I will say to him, | 30:27 | |
| "Father, I have sinned against heaven and before you. | 30:30 | |
| "I am no longer worthy to be called your son. | 30:36 | |
| "Treat me as one of your hired servants." | 30:40 | |
| And he arose and came to his father. | 30:44 | |
| But while he was yet at a distance, | 30:47 | |
| his father saw him and had compassion, | 30:49 | |
| and ran and embraced him and kissed him. | 30:53 | |
| The son said to him, | 30:58 | |
| "Father, I have sinned against heaven and before you, | 30:59 | |
| "I am no longer worthy to be called your son." | 31:06 | |
| But the father said to his servants, | 31:11 | |
| "Bring quickly the best robe and put it on him | 31:13 | |
| "and put a ring on his hand and shoes on his feet. | 31:16 | |
| "And bring the fatted calf and kill it, | 31:20 | |
| "and let us eat and make merry, | 31:23 | |
| "for this my son | 31:26 | |
| "was dead | 31:28 | |
| "and is alive again. | 31:31 | |
| "He was lost and is found!" | 31:33 | |
| And they began to make merry. | 31:38 | |
| Now his elder son was in the field | 31:42 | |
| and as he came and drew near to the house, | 31:44 | |
| he heard music and dancing. | 31:46 | |
| He called one of the servants and asked what this meant. | 31:50 | |
| And he said to him, "Your brother has come, | 31:54 | |
| "and your father has killed the fatted calf | 31:56 | |
| "because he has received him safe and sound." | 31:59 | |
| But he was angry and refused to come in. | 32:04 | |
| His father came out and entreated him. | 32:09 | |
| But he answered his father, | 32:12 | |
| "Lo! These many years I have served you | 32:14 | |
| "and I never disobeyed your command, | 32:17 | |
| "yet you have never given me a kid | 32:20 | |
| "that I might make merry with my friends. | 32:23 | |
| "But when this son of yours came, | 32:27 | |
| "who has devoured your living with harlots, | 32:29 | |
| "you killed for him the fatted calf!" | 32:32 | |
| And he said to him, | 32:37 | |
| "Son, you are always with me, and all that is mine is yours. | 32:40 | |
| "It was fitting to make merry and be glad, | 32:47 | |
| "for this, your brother was dead | 32:52 | |
| and is alive. | 32:56 | |
| "He was lost and is found." | 32:59 | |
| May God bless us | 33:11 | |
| that we may hear God's word | 33:13 | |
| in our hearts this day. | 33:16 | |
| The elder son refuses to go in to the celebration | 33:28 | |
| to welcome his brother back home. | 33:32 | |
| His father came out and entreated him. | 33:36 | |
| But he answered his father, | 33:39 | |
| "Lo! These many years I have served you | 33:42 | |
| "and I never disobeyed your command, | 33:45 | |
| "yet you never gave me a kid | 33:48 | |
| "that I might make merry with my friends. | 33:50 | |
| "But when this son of yours came, | 33:54 | |
| "who has devoured your living with harlots, | 33:57 | |
| "you killed for him the fatted calf." | 33:59 | |
| Is this right? | 34:11 | |
| How can this be? | 34:15 | |
| The elder son seems to have a case. | 34:20 | |
| We hear of an outstanding young man | 34:24 | |
| who's been an extraordinary son. | 34:27 | |
| Served his father many years | 34:30 | |
| and never disobeyed his fathers command. | 34:33 | |
| A good son | 34:38 | |
| or daughter, we might add. | 34:40 | |
| On the other hand, there is this prodigal. | 34:44 | |
| A young adult who grabbed his inheritance and ran off | 34:48 | |
| and squandered it. | 34:52 | |
| When he got what he deserved, | 34:55 | |
| when he got hungry, | 34:58 | |
| he came running back home to daddy. | 35:00 | |
| The father seems to be a pushover | 35:06 | |
| who favors his younger son. | 35:09 | |
| The minute he sees this apple of his eye approaching, | 35:11 | |
| he runs out to meet him, | 35:14 | |
| hugs him and throws a party in his honor. | 35:16 | |
| The elder brother has good reason to be mad, doesn't he? | 35:22 | |
| The father goes out to talk with him, | 35:30 | |
| hears his anger, | 35:34 | |
| in good, pastoral counseling fashion, | 35:36 | |
| and tells him he should come in and join the party. | 35:40 | |
| There is something more here. | 35:51 | |
| There is something about this elder son | 35:56 | |
| that doesn't ring true. | 36:00 | |
| He's very angry, it sounds like | 36:05 | |
| he has good reason to be angry. | 36:09 | |
| He says, "I never disobeyed you. | 36:13 | |
| "You never gave me a party." | 36:18 | |
| Does that sound familiar? | 36:24 | |
| In an argument, I always am right. | 36:28 | |
| They never do things the way they should. | 36:34 | |
| I never misbehave. | 36:38 | |
| They are always bad. | 36:42 | |
| In an argument, it's not my brother, | 36:46 | |
| it's your son, | 36:50 | |
| your daughter, | 36:53 | |
| your relatives. | 36:56 | |
| The elder son is angry. | 37:02 | |
| He wants to know where his reward is. | 37:05 | |
| He's been good. | 37:09 | |
| He's played by the rules. | 37:12 | |
| How come the father hasn't thrown a party for him? | 37:15 | |
| You or I might say, | 37:22 | |
| "Where's my reward for all I've done?" | 37:24 | |
| The parent hears the child's anger, | 37:33 | |
| refrains from listing all that he's done | 37:39 | |
| for the elder child. | 37:42 | |
| Does not enter into a debate. | 37:44 | |
| The parent simply says to his child, | 37:47 | |
| "You are always with me. | 37:52 | |
| "All that is mine is yours. | 37:57 | |
| "All that is mine is yours." | 38:03 | |
| Somehow the son is not able to receive | 38:11 | |
| what the father is offering. | 38:16 | |
| He must have been a serious and rather dower young man. | 38:21 | |
| He reminds me of a bumper sticker that reads, | 38:25 | |
| "For a while I felt good, but I finally got over it." | 38:29 | |
| In this parable, | 38:39 | |
| Jesus describes our relationship with God. | 38:42 | |
| God entreats each one of us to enter into community. | 38:49 | |
| God is present for us, | 38:56 | |
| listens to us, | 38:59 | |
| we have only to turn around | 39:02 | |
| and turn back to God. | 39:05 | |
| The Greek word for repentance is metanoia. | 39:09 | |
| Literally, to turn around. | 39:14 | |
| Something was hindering the elder son, | 39:21 | |
| restraining him from entering into life and community. | 39:25 | |
| Perhaps he had been too serious. | 39:31 | |
| Maybe he believed the rules too much, | 39:35 | |
| became too burdened down with care. | 39:40 | |
| There is a story of a young milkmaid. | 39:47 | |
| Excuse me. | 39:52 | |
| She brought two new milk pails | 39:54 | |
| and decided to walk into town to buy some cream. | 39:56 | |
| On the way, she met several neighbors | 40:00 | |
| who asked her to carry some garbage | 40:03 | |
| into the town dump for them. | 40:05 | |
| Being a good neighbor, | 40:08 | |
| she obliged. | 40:13 | |
| When she got to town and tried to empty the new pails, | 40:15 | |
| the garbage had stained | 40:19 | |
| and stuck to the inside of the pails. | 40:21 | |
| When she put the cream in the pails, | 40:24 | |
| it soured before she got home. | 40:27 | |
| Garbage is readily available to each of us. | 40:33 | |
| The garbage of too much work, | 40:39 | |
| the garbage of fear and envy, | 40:43 | |
| the garbage of anger and bitterness. | 40:48 | |
| Is there garbage in your life | 40:55 | |
| that is hindering you | 40:59 | |
| from entering into the community that God calls you to? | 41:00 | |
| The father in this parable, | 41:15 | |
| what manner of person is this parent? | 41:20 | |
| He entreats his elder son to come in | 41:27 | |
| and join in the merry making. | 41:30 | |
| He receives his lost son home again. | 41:34 | |
| No lectures, | 41:39 | |
| no bargains, | 41:41 | |
| no if you only did as I had taught you, | 41:44 | |
| he simply receives him back home, | 41:49 | |
| and rejoices. | 41:54 | |
| He is compassionate, this parent. | 41:57 | |
| Our Christian faith, | 42:03 | |
| a faith guided by the Holy Spirit, | 42:06 | |
| not by law, | 42:08 | |
| is rooted in compassion. | 42:11 | |
| How hard it is to be compassionate | 42:17 | |
| towards those who have wandered and been lost | 42:23 | |
| when we try so hard to be good. | 42:27 | |
| Compassion is not valued in our culture. | 42:34 | |
| It was not valued in Jesus' day either. | 42:38 | |
| Walter Brueggemann, in a book called | 42:44 | |
| The Prophetic Imagination, | 42:46 | |
| which is quoted in | 42:48 | |
| A Guide to Prayer for Ministers and Other Servants, | 42:49 | |
| says this, | 42:53 | |
| "Compassion constitutes a radical form of criticism, | 42:56 | |
| "for it announces that the hurt | 43:01 | |
| "is to be taken seriously, | 43:05 | |
| "that the hurt is not to be accepted as normal and natural | 43:08 | |
| "but is an abnormal and unacceptable condition | 43:14 | |
| "for humanness. | 43:17 | |
| "In the arrangement of lawfulness in Jesus' time, | 43:20 | |
| "as in the ancient empire of Pharaoh, | 43:24 | |
| "the one unpermitted quality of relation | 43:27 | |
| "was compassion. | 43:32 | |
| "Empires are never built or maintained | 43:35 | |
| "on the basis of compassion. | 43:38 | |
| "The norms of law, social control, | 43:40 | |
| "are never accommodated to persons, | 43:43 | |
| "but persons are accommodated to the norms. | 43:47 | |
| "Otherwise, the norms will collapse | 43:52 | |
| "and with them, the whole power arrangement. | 43:54 | |
| "Thus, the compassion of Jesus is to be understood | 43:59 | |
| "not simply as a personal, emotional reaction, | 44:02 | |
| "but as a public criticism | 44:06 | |
| "in which he dares to act upon his concern | 44:08 | |
| "against the entire numbness of his social context." | 44:12 | |
| If you | 44:24 | |
| and I | 44:26 | |
| could be compassionate toward others, | 44:28 | |
| perhaps we could be more accepting of ourselves as well. | 44:35 | |
| Not as we imagine ourselves to be, | 44:39 | |
| but ourselves as we really are. | 44:44 | |
| The younger son | 44:51 | |
| provides a model for us. | 44:53 | |
| Not in his sinning, of course, | 44:56 | |
| but in his coming to himself, | 45:00 | |
| and returning home again, acknowledging his sin. | 45:05 | |
| The younger child receives his inheritance | 45:11 | |
| and abuses it. | 45:15 | |
| Finds himself without the resources he needs for life. | 45:19 | |
| Strung out, | 45:24 | |
| hungry, | 45:26 | |
| and isolated, | 45:29 | |
| and no one gave him anything. | 45:33 | |
| But he comes to himself. | 45:40 | |
| What would it mean for you | 45:46 | |
| to come to yourself? | 45:50 | |
| When he comes to himself, | 46:04 | |
| he realizes that he's worse off than his fathers servants. | 46:05 | |
| They have bread, but he is perishing. | 46:10 | |
| He is aware that his sin has lead to a living death. | 46:15 | |
| He knows that he cannot go back home again | 46:21 | |
| and have everything as it were before he sinned. | 46:24 | |
| And yet, with courage, | 46:31 | |
| he arises and goes home. | 46:33 | |
| Intending, merely, | 46:36 | |
| to be received as a servant in his fathers house. | 46:38 | |
| When his father greets him, | 46:45 | |
| he confesses his sin. | 46:48 | |
| "Father," he says, "I have sinned against heaven | 46:59 | |
| "and before you. | 47:02 | |
| "I am no longer worthy to be called your son. | 47:05 | |
| "Treat me as one of your hired servants." | 47:10 | |
| But while he was yet at a distance, | 47:16 | |
| his father saw him and had compassion | 47:19 | |
| and ran and embraced him and kissed him. | 47:23 | |
| And the son confesses his sin to the father. | 47:28 | |
| But the father says to the servants, | 47:35 | |
| "Bring quickly the best robe and put it on him, | 47:36 | |
| "and put a ring on his hand and shoes on his feet." | 47:40 |
| - | Those of sonship. | 0:03 |
| And bring the fatted calf and kill it | 0:07 | |
| and let us eat and make merry. | 0:09 | |
| For this my son was dead and is alive again. | 0:11 | |
| He was lost and is found. | 0:18 | |
| And they began to make merry. | 0:27 | |
| What words of hope and joy for us. | 0:37 | |
| To know that whenever you | 0:42 | |
| and I wander from God's love, | 0:45 | |
| God welcomes us back, | 0:49 | |
| forgives us, | 0:52 | |
| and rejoices that we have turned around | 0:55 | |
