- Charlene P. Kammerer - "God's Generosity - Our Jealousy" (September 20, 1981)
- Description:
-
Sermon start time: (Part 1) 39:37. Sermon end time: (Part 2) 7:58.
When the beginning-of-the-day workers complain that the end-of-the-day workers received the same wages in the famous parable. Kammerer asserts their envy and their insistence on a merit-based system of reward is an illusion that we humans make our own security – and God’s generosity shatters this illusion; one has the choice, then, to choose to celebrate God’s gift of grace or sit in envy, thus missing the gift. (Abstract created by Duke Divinity School staff.)
Key quotation: For me, there is good news and there is bad news in this parable from Matthew. The good news is that of a gracious benefactor. The overwhelming Good News is that God Good news is that God never deals us on the basis of merit or achievement. The Bad news is that we wish God did just that. We see our own human flaw in the grumbling workers’ complaints. It is far more serious than envy which cannot tolerate kindness shown to others. It if the fact that insisted on a merit system. They truly believe that reward should be proportionate to achievement.
